Honestly, I straight haven't been that impressed by the last two years. My fav album last year was Fetty debut. This year it's been Kamaiyah and Kevin Gates. Lately most rap I've been listening to has been like 10 years old.

Battling is completely irrelevant, mostly because battle rapping is god damn awful. Even the guys that are considered the best of the best, they kinda all sound like extra aggressive slam poetry that lacks all the creativity of actual slam poetry.

Yeah L, had good flow(for his time) and was the punchline king(for his time) but the production of most of his shit was awful. Awful to the point that it detracted and distracted from everything else. Also the body of work is just not there man. Only two real albums of completed shit. He could of been the best. But unfortunately, between the small body of work and the fact that rap has progressed since he's been active, he just doesn't make the cut.

Pun misses top 10 for small body of work as well.

Eazy E doesn't even make a top 50 list. Didn't write his own shit and was bad.

And honestly, I've only listen to Paid in Full, but I feel like Rakim is basic as hell especially compared to nowadays. He definitely should get credit for how influential he is, because every one that inspired everyone that's out now has Rakim on there best list. But it's a different era now. I wouldn't include him or any of his contemporaries like Kane or Slick Rick.

Yeah, Nas is a GOAT. Idk. I personally think I'd slot in Hova at 1? "2 hot albums every 10 year average."

Old school rappers weren't better. I feel that's a very weird misconception. Their rhyme schemes were incredibly basic, especially when compared to someone like Cam or Weezy.

Wayne is top 10. Even if you disregard sales, Jay's run of hot albums from 96-03 is better than any one ever. Ever. On top of that Hov is an absolute kingmaker, he's made more bad rappers matter than anyone, aside from maybe 50.

A Body of Work argument isn't "quantity over quality" it's "quantity of quality over less quantity of quality". Like I said, Hov has more top 3 or 5 albums of w/e year he released one in then anyone that we have discussed so far. The amount of quality and the ability to put sustained efforts together is astonishing and honestly unlike anything I've seen before or since. The only guy who can boast 6 albums that dominated their respective years like Hov did is Ye and he took almost twice as long.

And yeah, the problem with a lot of freestyle is not much of it is actually off the top. One of my favorite freestyles that seems off the dome is Gambino on hot 97.

I don't care if you die. You ain't the goat if you only got a handful of hot tracks and never put together a year smashing album. Only short term guy that gets the nod is Big for that Bill Walton esque short term dominence.

In sports, you don't get in the Hall of Fame for only 1 or 2 good years. You have to have sustained greatness. I think that translates well to any field. In order to be a goat, you to have to be able to be great for a long period of time. That's the Kendrick argument, right? Otherwise he'd be very near the GOAT or the actual GOAT. But it's only 3 albums over 4 years. I think Kendrick is undeniable if you aren't judging from a standpoint of body or work. He's released 2 classics (one of which has become a de facto anthem of the new civil rights movement/black lives matter) and another very good album, and has all the skills on the mic and I think over the course of the last year he's become one of the most important rappers of all time, but it's only 4 years and 3 albums.

I was sayin by your parameters, there is no reason that he was in your honorable mentions in your list post. The only reason to keep him off is a longevity argument. He's already infinitely more important to hip hop history than a third of the guys on your list and potentially American History. He has all the skills you mentioned in spades. Why would he be off and L be on? Doesn't make sense. IMO only justification L was on your list (esp at 1) is hipster cred garbage.

I never got into FBZ, who is UA?

Right after Steez died, I heard from somewhere that Steez wrote most of the stuff for all the pro era guys, which i didn't really believe at the time, but i haven't liked anything from those guys since his death and Joey Bad has become a bit of a joke imo.

The worst part is both him and rocky came on the scene at the same time and they are both kinda lame now.

On what basis do you say Steez ghostwrote for Joey? Like actual credible stuff.
It was just something I heard a couple weeks after Steez' death, that I didn't necessarily believe at the time. But Steez dying coincided with a sharp decline in skill for Joey Bad and everyone in pro era really, so I started to buy in. I don't know where the person who told me got their source.

I don't dislike Nicki, but I think there are a few things that can detract from her, purely from a hip hop stand point. She's kinda not really a rapper. She's a pop star. Take her 3 biggest hits for example(Anaconda, Bang Bang, Super Bass). 2 of those are not rap songs. Also, in 2 of those, she isn't even the biggest draw to the song. And 1 of them is absolutely atrocious(the only one I would consider an actual rap song).

Honestly, I can get down to some of her stuff, but it's what I'd consider undeniably good to where i'd be shocked if someone didn't like her.

If I listen to rap on spotify, I mostly listen to Rap Caviar(to catch up on new bangers) or Like Allen-I(if i'm feeling in a poppy mood).

Xxx is one of my favorite rap albums of all time. 2011 was one of my favorite years for rap, honestly. Pl3dge, xxx, the one, take care, throne, relax, black up, goblin, return of 4eva, section.80, instrumentals, covert coup. It was a crazy strong year. Honestly rap isn't as good as it was 5 years ago. It doesnt cover as much ground. Like last year released 2 albums that critics would call essential, but they told a similar story. Everything else was bangers, but only one of those albums was really necessary. Only shit I listen to regularly from last year is fetty, push, and eat pray thug.

I've never listened to it. I'm going by hearsay. I listened to Shadow of Doubt and Pinata, but only heard good things about ESGN and that everything else was skippable.

Yeah, that shit happened like 2 miles from the bar we were at last night. Shit's wild.

edit: Actually, were at the carnitas taco shack like a quarter mile from there watching the end of game 3/possibly in transit to the bar 2 miles away when the big brawl/riot deal happened judging by the time in some news articles. Shit is extra wild. Happy we didn't get caught up in it. And people ask why i never go outside.

Why? His rap voice can be very off-putting and his content isn't for everybody.

His stuff is tremendously positive and he's a big time philanthropist, donating millions to public schools and shit.

Like I can understand being like "I don't really listen to Chance" but, I mean like...disliking the guy is impossible.

For chilling, I mostly just stick to the AF1 lows. Easy to find on the cheap and as long you don't take them hiking or some dumb shit, you're never gonna fuck the cushion up in it. I also got a pair of foamposite ones from like 2 years ago cause they are alien technology and never get thrashed.

For indoor ball, I got a pair of BrandBlack J Crossover 2 and last year's Super Flys. Think about ordering the Force Vectors cause they half off.

Outdoor, I still got traction on the Kobe Mentality's from like 2 years ago. They are hella comfy and they great when you never jump.

The foamposite are honestly my favorite shoe for ball and chilling once you break them in, though, because no one can really scuff you. It's like the shoe equivalent of steel bumpers. They just scuff themselves instead of you.

Honestly. The foamposites are expensive af, but they are for real scuff proof. Which is huge if you are familiar with the flyknit shoes and w/e the fuck adidas calls their knit. Like the kobe 9s were straight up liable to be split open if someone scuffed you (happened to me).

Leather is fine but it gets the scuff marks. Posite is dream, but breaking them in is bleh. Also the ventilation is...not there.

That's literally like the only two good things about flyknit. Forms to your foot immediately and mad ventilation. Like not even wearing shoes.

I thought most of what LUV said was hyperbole before I checked it out. Listened to it this morning, about 5 tracks. It was pretty legit. Probably will slowly give the rest a spin. Crabs in The Bucket is fire.

Gave the rest a spin. I think the second half is against all odds better than the first.

I've listened to like half of Summertime 06, that album is HELLA long.

Never listened to either SVCC but I loved Hell Can Wait. Probably more than Summertime 06. Big Fish Theory is probably my new fav by him tho.
