what's the incentive for eliminating other people? like in the original thing it was specifically stated that the pirates enjoy throwing each other overboard so it made sense that they were bribing each other to stay alive, but here the goal is to just collect money

i dont see why the optimal strategy in this version is not to give everyone as equal of a share as possible and vote out people who refuse to comply? (basically along the lines of the prisoner's dilemma along multiple iterations, where the optimal strategy is to cooperate until your opponent defects, where you then defect them until they cooperate again)?

E's optimal play is going to vote no matter what unless I give him 100 coins so I'm not going to bother bribing him.

Charles, this puts you in second place - I can't distribute the coins so that the placement puts us closer without giving myself absolutely nothing, which is kind of going against wincon. A lead of 6 coins is also pretty easy to beat so I wouldn't advise getting greedy here because that leads to E getting the entirety of the coins since James has no reason to vote No to this proposition and Yes to the next.

James, if Charles decides to turn this down, he has to bribe you to make sure you vote yes since it is always within E's (or anyone in the third slot) best interest to vote no. Assuming he doesn't deliberately spite himself, he's either going to cut it 50/50 (which would be dumb since that puts his competition closer to him after I die) or give you less money.

This is basically an "everyone wins" plan the best I can make it, except for E obviously but he can't really win as the third slot.

That means either putting James at a closer lead behind you, expecting James to accept getting less gold, or choosing to receive less gold

The numbers are close enough that it hurts me more than it helps you. Getting a 6 or 7 coin lead over me isn't going to be that hard.

Now, if I had like 100 something coins then yeah killing me would be the obvious play. When you basically catch up with me with my plan, it doesn't help you at all and just leaves E more likely to take all the gold.

it's short term vs long term but the short term benefit isn't that helpful imo

Charles can literally propose anything he wants because he’s the second person - literally because a 2 player game is autowin for the captain

Since James has the threat of losing to you getting 100 coins if he turns down whatever Charles offers, he bascially has to take whatever charles offers. so if Charles gives 10 coins to James he has to accept lest you get 100 coins, despite the fact that I offered him more.

Unless Charles stays true to 50/50’ing, James is deciding between losing and losing harder

Inferno, turning this down risks not getting anything at all. E never bribes you here and he only has to convince one person to vote for him, which is most likely Charles.

James, if for some reason Charles turns down E's offer, Inferno is absolutely not giving you 60 gold pieces.

We can’t be perfectly logical though because of how money stays between each playthrough. It might be optimal in some circumstances to vote no on a vote that otherwise you would say yes to because the benefit of cutting someone’s gold outweighs any offer they can give

charles you have to rely on James deciding not to get greedy since E is very unlikely to make a suboptimal proposal, 20 still takes you in the lead. it might be tempting to kill me off and get that 40 gold but it's easier for E to convince 1 person than it is for me to convince 2 so chances are it'll be for naught, and giving more gold to the leading people is a worse idea than killing off someone who's behind

inferno charles will have little reason to give you more than 60 gold here if i die
