Has anybody entertained the idea of a grace period for the rest of the town to override a quick hammer?

You mean, like, a Governor?

Dunno

Let's throw some ideas around

My immediate one is an in thread VOTE: override that gets counted for some period of time (24-48 hours) after a lynch. Day continues as if the lynch never happened up to the already established deadline

There should probably also be a penalty for having your hammer overridden

Modified governor could be promising. I think shifting site meta to dissuade quickhammers than patch rules over the issue is a better idea in the long run (though reasoning about how this works is obviously a lot fuzzier).

Nah, it's a funny thread.

Though, maybe it should be on Speakeasy.

Just don't put someone to l-1 w/o wanting them to be lynched.

if you keep treating games like they don’t matter then more and more people are gonna agree, stop caring, and leave

One way I've seen it done offsite is that players who are already on the wagon can cancel the hammer by unvoting (i.e. the hammer doesn't lock in existing votes). You need some sort of fixed time delay between the hammer and the thread lock in order to give people an opportunity to do that, though, which can be logistically awkward.

Sites with very short deadlines (on the order of a few days) typically don't use hammers at all, and just draw every day out to full length.

the trouble is that this might draw days out and make it harder for towns to consensus

Can attest to this.

I played on a site that used Day phases that lasted from 20-44 hours long.

I have been thinking of some anti-quickhammer voting mechanics myself.

One of them is, as said, that there is a grace period where people can unvote after the hammer to cancel the lynch.

There's another one which I have thought of and am polishing

Town could manipulate that mechanic into effectively getting two lynches per day phase by making the 2nd scummiest hammer the scummiest.
