I'm interested to see if there're enough semi-retro GBA fans here to run a
Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword
Mini (or Large?!?) Theme game. I'm thinking about one interesting mechanic having to do with scum fakeclaiming and some special town-powers to balance it, but other than that it'd just be flavorfilled. Please PM me if interested in sharing ideas or in hearing my own!

Also, I
am
aware of Vi's ongoing Large Theme "Mafia Behind the Maiden," and though the flavor sources are related, anybody who knows both of these games will know that the games themselves are completely different. I thought that perhaps there might be interest in FE7 Mafia since there was obviously enough interest for FE9.

^ Do this and I will /pre-in.

Also...I'll officially be qualified to run it after my sigged game finishes, but how do I request permission to pick up a concept previously abandoned after a Mod flaked?
For the specific situation, note that I am referring to Zajnet's Golden Sun Mafia - abandoned before Role PM's were even sent out during confirmation.

It will take quite awhile to make my way up through the Coney Island queue, but at this point I believe there'd still be enough interest and if Zajnet's out there I'd love to hear what he had in mind for the Setup.

Any other takers who'd be interested in about (oh, say) 3-4 months?

WRT the "confirming 3 players" thing...the way I read it was that it was sortof like a mass-RoleCop that is told to the whole game BUT 1) nobody knows which player goes with which Role, and 2) only the Scum know which Compound was outed, unless one of the outed Roles is a unique Town PR (and even then, only the PR themselves would know that it was their compound because only they know that they're the one who's the unique Town PR).

VERY cool Setup idea. I think anything that forces Town and Scum to bargain "lynching" trade-offs would be fascinating.

e.g. Chemist outs Compound 2, which only has 1 Mafia in it. Scum wanted to know if there were PR's in that Compound. At the next Daystart, Town knows there are (let's say) 2 PR's in Compound 2, but so do Scum. Now Town can bargain on the PR's using their antidotes to gas the whole Compound and kill the Scum, while Scum can hope that Town allow the unidentified Scum in Compound 2 to survive so they can pick off the PR's later. Other cool situations would be possible as well...would be very interested in seeing this run.

Hope I'm reading that right...

I've got a different idea for my current slot in the Mini Themed Queue, but please keep in touch.
I might wish to run it as a Micro because the 3 3-player Compounds works well into a Micro with a maximum of 9 players.

What thought have you put into making the setup larger than 3 Compounds?

In post 3651, IceGuy wrote:Two ideas I've been thinking about, as an extension of the Executioner/King mechanic:

Council
(Mini or Large Theme)

Town elects two people to serve on the council, scum selects one. The council meets and decides about the lynch.

Proportional Representation
(Large Theme)

This is a bit more complicated, but here is how it would go down:

Candidacy phase

This would be the main Day phase. In this phase, parties form. A party forms by an application of at least three players. Players can join parties if the majority of the party approves of them and can leave parties by simple declaration. Parties have a QT where all party members can talk at any time.

Alternatively, players can choose to run as an independent, or endorse a party or independent either publicly or non-publicly.

After all players have either joined a party or sent in their choice to run or endorse (or when deadline hits), the candidacy phase is closed.

Distribution of the seats

A parliament with a small number of players is formed by the D'Hondt method (with random selections if necessary). The number of votes for a party or independent is the sum of the number of members and the number of endorsements. Seats that go to a party go to random party members; if a party would get more seats than the number of members (or an independent would get more than one seat), the seat is filled by the next party (or left empty if no other possibility).

Decision phase

The parliament now gets to decide on everything by a simple vote: player(s) getting killed, but also all other town actions.

The part where I'm unsure of how is how parliamentary meetings would go down. This could be completely open (in-thread, everybody can talk but only MPs can vote) to completely closed (QT) to something in-between (in-thread but only MPs can talk).

What do you think, and was this ever run before?

Personally, I would love to play this.

same setup. So flips in one game can effect flips in another.

Would you allow players in either game to talk about the other one then?
This seems like it would be par for the experiment...

Speaking of which, given the odd "setup(s)" and the bending of a site rule, I'm guessing this would be run outside of an official queue, much like Majiffy's Audio Mafia game a few weeks ago. This sounds really interesting, and I had actually been thinking of something similar to this where the games were more intertwined - for example one game could be Reverse Mafia (with the "reviving Town" mechanic) and the other game could be regular Mafia, with more people entering the second game as the players in the first game "revived" more people. Given the Reverse Mafia "reviving" mechanic, Roles would be independent, and the other main problem with the idea is it'd be all the same players and would be wacky to setup for wincons, etc.

But I digress, I really like the idea Reck. If it bears fruit lemme know.

...it would definitely depend on a couple things, especially if that feature of the game would be Open. Mostly, it'd probably depend on what you were reading through their meta for and subsequently basing roles off of. Also, consider the workload as a Mod of running that even as a Micro.

I don't like that version of Priest, no, and I think the "Smalltown" kind of setup is laid out a little more workably,
but I'm probably not who you should be gauging site opinion on.

As far as those priests go, I know they're not really under discussion but I'd just like to explain that I dislike them for the same reason Vi has said he dislikes setups where Scum have no Factional Kill. I can only guess really, because I don't remember, but I seem to think he thought it was a fundamental part of the game that Scum should be able to Kill. I'll go look up wherever it was in MD that he touched on this, but basically I think that it's a fundamental part of the game that the Town be told ACCURATE information upon a person's flip, except if the setup is specifically designed to accomodate that kind of WIFOM and/or it is actively expected in a game.

Slightly-non sequitur moment: a recent Micro I played in included Death Millers when there was no mention of bastard Modding, implied or otherwise. One of the Millers in the game was lynched and flipped Goon, and the next Night the other Miller was killed and flipped correctly. In Endgame the Mod confessed he expected us to realize that the "Goon" had been a Death Miller...nowhere in my mind would that be a normal or even feasible expectation - the same principle applies (in my mind) to any role that does not flip correctly or does not flip at all.

To me it's taken away a fundmental part of the game, not to mention the fact that I think those kinds of roles only work when specifically announced or expected beyond reasonable doubt.

Well I'M not a fan, but again, I'm probably not the one to judge site-wide opinion off of. Many roles are considered egregiously bastard by some and good fun by others - granted those others usually come from TalkRational or EpicMafia...but we're not all loyalists to the Crown of mith.

I figured that's what he meant - like everybody would play with everybody else in at least one game such that there were enough miniLyLo's that there was actually a CHANCE that 1 (or maybe even 2) losses in the beginning was NOT an insta-lose

I'm guessing you'd be re-rolling between miniLyLo's, sounds like a cool idea btw

Nonono I understand all that - I guess I was just trying to simultaneously convey 1) what my understanding was, and 2) the fact that I disagreed that single-loss elimination would be more enjoyable

this isn't baseball and there's no need to mathematically eliminate players or teams before their time - and I think you're forgetting the fact that if 1 of the people (Scum) loses, there're 2 winners to every LyLo. it might not change things TOO much but it's definitely not as "win/lose you're done you should go" as baseball or whatever

also, it's Mafia - I personally still might wanna play in those quickie LyLo's even if I can't win overall - I don't think "one and done" is the right approach :P

Some of these are rather gimmicky, some are fairly normal setups with flavour, and some have

I also have a bunch of stuff based on individual books and plays, from Shakespeare
and Chaucer to Dickens and Stoker, if there'd be any sort of interest in that (yes, we were a nerdy bunch...).
you had me at "Shakespeare" - very interested in reviewing/coModding a Mafia "translation" of a Bard classic
Finally, I've done something akin to a book club/Mafia game, where a book is chosen that no one has read, and a reread is (cleverly) coordinated by the mod with in-game action. That stuff takes some effort to run, as well as commitment from everyone involved, but I've had some very positive feedback the few times I have run it.
this sounds like it would be awesome, but MIGHT need to be run as some kind of special game - and yeah, big commitment

Has a Bioshock Theme been done? I would want to add Infinite mechanic(s) or at least flavor so even if the answer is yes (which I believe it is, since I remember reading one maybe?) I would think it could be (re)done if there's interest, which I bet there could be. Hi.

Any interest in a Rick & Morty-themed game? Mini or Large depending on show of hands - I'm qualified to run either and I'm already thinking up a setup. Anybody who'd like to co-mod / review or something-other-than-play can PM me or whatever.

I searched the thread and the archived wiki lists of themes before asking, so it's a shame that passed me by. I'd definitely be incorporating Season 2 stuff, and a bunch of Pocket Morty references. If the other(s) were run long enough ago that nothing from Season 2 was in them, then I'd be totally up for designing some kind of spiritual sequel, but I'd rather not repeat a theme outright or steal this out from under you, unless you'd like to see it run even if you don't have the time to do it yourself.

EDIT: Do you have a link to the other game that was run, by any chance?

There's no protocol against it. Maybe link to a setup wiki page, if you feel like making one...? Setup specifics might be more suited to the New Setup Review thread if you're more interested in talking setup than theme.

Yeah, I read up on the game and had been PMing Antihero, Elbirn. :giggle:
I heard about all the hardships and I agree the setup was less than stellar.

I'm helping Venmar design that since I did a Micro Civ V UPick awhile back.

This was done by somebody, I think maybe me. It was bad for all the normal reasons Hydrae are bad, and Hydra slips definitely happened often. Would not recommend.

Hey there all! I’m co-modding the
Civilization 5 UPick Large Theme
that’s in sign-ups right now - Venmar and I have two spots left open, and we could use a waiting list. Hydrae need not apply. If you were on the fence, get off it and come join us!

Definitely not the first option there!

I did something like this while back, I think, a series of linked games with the same playerlist. It went fine? Make sure you get a dedicated group, though, because it may not seem like a commitment but that's before the cathartic release at the end of Game 1 where everybody (just me?) went "aaah... time to relax- wait, but WHA- oh right, I have more games to do here"

I kinda want to reread those games too, because I remember them being informative...

In post 644, ajfefijsleifjsa wrote:/out didn't realize hydra aren't allowed
I've thought about this a lot recently, and realized that all my problems with hydrae could be solved by effectively leveying a "post restriction" of sorts. If you really want to play in a hydra, it should be your goal to eliminate essentially anything that makes you different from a normal player, so as not to disrupt the game for others. That could possibly be achieved via any number of tactics: group PT where you all try to format/voice posts the same way before making them (this would imply no post "signing"), cohesive discussion between heads outside of the game, never in-thread, maaaybe only one person logs in and posts from the account and always from a different browser (that only has auto-login for the hydra itself) to eliminate as many opportunities as possible for an alt-slip?

There are options, but as it is, hydrae fundamentally change how players interact, and IMO the majority of the time they do so negatively. If you want to have a hydra in a game of mine (or a game I play in), I'd want it to be understood that it's your responsibility to minimize all of that. I understand that I can't expect that as a player, so I don't sign up for games with hydra and I /out if a hydra joins after me. It's just my personal preference, but as a mod I have an obligation to work with my values, IMO. If you feel like you'd enjoy that potential challenge, feel free to discuss your plan with me via PM and sign up with your hydra - this goes for all future games of mine as well, in case anybody reads my posts.

/derail
I've done an all-hydra game in the past (which went as well as you'd expect), but I'm throwing this out there if anybody's interested: a game with a Perfect Hydra or two. Think about it: hydrae who have to work to be a cohesive mind-melded mafia player on top of hunting Scum or pretending to hunt Scum... does that sound awful or appealing? I've never liked hydrae, and this isn't the place to go into that, but I'm trying to be open-minded here and see what we could discover about the phenomenon.

You may see “the point” as “less work for me!” but my counterpoint is that it’s
more
work for others and that it fundamentally changes Mafia, often for the worse. If you don’t want to respond to those points, that’s fine, but it just means this isn’t the game for you. I’d argue being in a game with a hydra is stifling.

Role/Game idea:

P.D.A. Lovers

P.D.A. Lovers are Lovers with a modifier. They must be the only pair of Lovers in a game, and can be of any alignment combination, but if they're ever both voting for the same player at the same time, or if either of them ever votes for the other one, they will gain a "Hated" modifier flavored as "you were seen being gross and snogging, groping, or holding hands and looking too longingly into eachothers' eyes in public - the rest of the Town is jealous of your love, and they Hate you now" or some such. I feel like this is an important step to take for the Lover role. Would be kinda fun to try out, especially since the feeling is so relatable, non?

explicitly Yes (further information for ListMod will follow)

Description:
During Bastard++ I became fascinated with the idea of balancing otherwise "bastard" mechanics. And religion is also interesting, though in a more at-a-distance, clinical sense, like cocaine. We used to think it was a lot better for us than it actually is, and I'm glad not as many people do it anymore. Do people actually read these or do you just decide on a game after reading the title? I'm on a horse.

It would not be remotely balanced.

Part of in would require you to submit 3 actions, maximum 1 modifier. If anyone else has that action, everyone loses that action. You gain 2 maybe 3 shots of that action.

If anyone here is familiar with Deck Mafia, it may sound oddly familiar :p
Sounds fun. Need help "designing" or want some "fun starter combos"? :P

Edit: Actually now I'm unsure if I want to play or help "design"

Also my one caution w that kind of setup/game would be that some ppl seem selective nowadays over whomst they play w/, & not being able to know ahead for some of them may be a deal-breaker, unless maybe mod had some behind-the-scenes implementation for that (but ew, that gets so messy quickly, who likes confirmed-WOTC)

Also, would you allow hydras?
jesus christ don't allow hydras

It's not a bad idea! I'd be happy to join a PT or MD thread to discuss refinements or smth, but I do just encourage a lot of refinements/consideration to be put into how this is run

yeah, this thread is kindof a hybrid of a "gauging interest; would ppl actually want to play This?" thread and a "cool idea; need help setup-crafting/designing This, maybe" thread so different ppl are gonnna be looking for different feedback

1. Trojans vs. Greeks sounds cool, but I think this is going to quickly devolve into "what kind of reference is the mod making with the T/G thing & is it relevant to breaking the game" this would be fine, but prob be aware of it & build in, like, crazy fakeclaims & such? idk, I wanna help design tho so I can see how your idea works, but you need players too fosho

2. UPicks are fun, I like UPicks, but you say "UPick-esque elements inside the game," so will parts of picks be revealed like in some UPicks/Great/er/est Idea games? how would that work? when would ppl UPick things? would Scum be able to do so? is there anything Town/uninformedmajority can do about that...? all things to consider that will directly impact both factions' "fun" factor

3. gonna +1 n say you will need to get some long-time designers or the person/ppl who ran the last "roles based on MafiaScummers game," like this, to help out &/or get some currently-active designers who also know the loud and around players/ppl you could base roles off of? idk that's a tough order! but it'll make this kind of game one to remember, rather than a goofy dud

4. I like role madness games; include some of the guarantees that Great/er/est Idea games have regarding % of Town/nonTown in-game, probably, and you'll prob want to include some kind of disclaimer like "this will use some EpicMafia game stuff/info, which you can find here (if it's online) / which I can explain below" etc. to help ppl decide if they want to /in

ok so after my pagetop was so rudely stolen, also, here's my question:

Baldur's Gate 3, Stardew Valley, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic (the good one), Pokemon (or Palworld)... would anybody be down for a highly-flavored Favorite Video Game UPick or smth like that? Baldur's Gate 3 would be some kind of empowered Neighborizer (bc
"companionship"
is the name of the game), Stardew Valley could be something like a Paranoid Fruit Vender ( e.g. are they giving you a lovely Gold Star Goat Cheese or an evil False Magma Cap that'll kill ya? they dunno, i dunno, we dunno :) ), you get the idea

:P
