A whole bunch of bedrooms not pictured.

Anyway, the planning phase has just begun, but more details will be edited into this post as they become available.

COST

$151.83 per person for the airbnb. See post #127 for more details on how to pay.

TRANSPORTATION

Portland International Airport (PDX) is where you want to fly in to. There is a light rail train that will take you all the way to my house, or we can work on picking people up at the airport. Details on getting to the meet itself will be hammered out later.

I started from a premise of "Nobody will vote for Radja on the first day" and extrapolated to "Therefore I'm gonna try and latch onto him as an ally."

I didn't tell him about this plan beforehand, though, so I think it counts as ethical.

It is looking like the dates for this are going to have to be in
August
, as my wife will murder me if we do it in July. Ideally we would like to do this August 9-13, but if a different weekend works better for most people then we can find another AirBnb.

Alright, so the house that we were looking at is now booked. :-/

Malkon, Tanis, and I have been scouring Airbnb looking for a new option. We have a few, but they all come with different pros and cons.

OPTION 1:
THIS PLACE
Says It Hosts: 20
Cost: $480/night
Cost Per Person*: $150

Pros: Near airport, cheap, spacious, includes sauna, pool table, ping pong table, foosball
Cons:
Requires a five-night rental.
That would make the dates August 9-14. Technically in Washington.

Picking this house would require one of the following:
a) Spread the game out.
Start Survivor Friday night when we get there. Add more time between challenges and Tribal Council. Last day is decompress/board games/whatevs.
b) Have an extra Fun day.
Start Survivor Friday night when we get there. Keep a similar schedule as Survivormeet II, with FTC ending on Sunday Night. Monday is decompress/board games/whatevs. Tuesday is more of that, or if people want to go do touristy things in Portland they can do that. Day not mandatory if you have to leave to go home.

OPTION 2:
THIS PLACE
Says It Hosts: "over 26 comfortably"
Cost: $578/night:
Cost Per Person*: $173

Pros: On a lake, hot tub, large yard, ping pong, pool table, two miles away from the beach/casino, can potentially mean a larger game
Cons: All the way in Lincoln City, expensive

OPTION 3:
THIS PLACE
Says It Hosts: "a party of 20 nicely"
Cost: $510/night
Cost Per Person*: $113

Pros: Cheap, 8 acres, house has weird floor plan with basically a "suite" containing a living area and a bigass bedroom with a ton of beds, and then a bunch of bedrooms and a living area outside of the "suite", lake, Frisbee golf on site, fire pit, continental breakfast
Cons: Kitchen is limited, house has weird floor plan, owners live downstairs and have quiet hours at 11:00 on weekends and 9:00 on weekdays.

There are other Airbnbs, but most of them are either way too expensive or don't really have room to accommodate two tribal areas. If it was up to me I really like Option 1b, but this is about what works for all of you. Please give me your thoughts.

*Cost Per Person based on the assumption of 16 players and 6 mods/crew.

Got a message from the owners of 3 this morning. Looks like it's out, but not for the reason you all think.
Hi Kelly! Well actually doesnt sound silly, sounds like fun! We had a big group last year that played a game similar and they enjoyed it and we loved having them. So first off you know we live on site too right? We have no problem, in fact we have our family rafting trip that weekend every year so its pretty certain we will not be on site however we return Sun evening. Second I need to say its a bit concerning to have that many people for a couple reasons. One we only have 13 bed spaces and a sofa. We Do have an air mattress and some other pads and all 3 bedrooms are large with plenty of floor space for 2 more in each room on carpet along with room for 2 more in the other living area but we want you to know this. Along with that
we would need to ask you to limit it to 20 people maximum
. Normally 16 is our maximum because we are on a septic system. This many people for that many days can pose a serious issue with our system. Along with limiting to 20 we would need to ask you for your word that at least 8 of your 20 would shower in the evening and the remaining in the morning. This will assure our system does not overload. We have not had any problems yet as all larger groups have agreed to this and doneba fantastic job of following through. We want you to know the kitchen is small and it does have a 2 burner hot plate, lg electric skillet, crock pot, instant pot available, lg microwave and large toaster oven, a full size refrigerator and a bbq outside however it does not have a full size stove/oven in the kitchen. We do have many lg groups that cook meals and tell us it all worked great especiallt in summer as most bbq but we just wanted you to be aware of all this.

One concern is that you all met online but you did not say how long youve known eachother? All our groups have been families or friends for many years providing a certain degree of accountability toward each other. All we have is your profile and review to go by so its a bit of a concern how we would know or be assured there would be no issues for any of you party for unforseens. ie. Over drinking and disruptive to others or neighbors or not caring for the house. Not a huge concern but nevertheless it crossed our mind and felt it worth mentioning. And by the way Yes there are two seperate living room areas and they are down the hall from eachother and their are double doors that close off the suite.

Let me know your thoughts or concerns and I will try to be as clear and descriptive as possible. One last thing is youll notice you could only put in 16 guests max and that each guest over 10 is an additional $10/night. So we would need to decline this request and send a "special offer" back for you to chose with the additional $40/night chg for the 4 people over 16.

Hope this is all makes sense and will work for you. Please let me know so we can send you the offer.
Cheers!
Tim
He does mention a rule about at least 8 people promising to shower in the evening instead of the morning, which I think we should port to wherever we actually end up.

Lincoln City is a little over two hours away from PDX, probably two and a half with traffic.

Re: Transport

Nobody should be renting any cars. I have a car. Malkon has a car. Kittymo has a car. Ceph and STD are presumably driving down. Bebs is presumably driving down. Worst case scenario I can bully a family member into loaning us a car.

Whether we WANT to drive a long way is another discussion, but the cars themselves should not be an obstacle.

I will say that we will be handling the sign-ups the same way Survivormeet II did. We will give everybody at least a month's notice before we start officially accepting payments, and then once that day comes it will be first-come, first-served. People missing the cutoff will go onto a waiting list.

Reck gave everybody 1 month but if we did that then I'm asking you all to send me a fair bit of money right at the start of the holiday season and I'm not going to let the Grinch ruin
two
things today. Therefore, right now I'm thinking that you all have until
January 15
to save money and get vacation requests in order.

That date may change if we think of a better way to handle this.

Yeah, it's available.

Right now we need to decide if we're doing 16 players + crew at $165/each or 18 players + crew at $151 each. Best of all, we can pay half of the money up front to reserve the spot, so I'll try and scrounge up the funds to do so.

Well, we do have to factor in physically accommodating everybody and, you know, having enough time to go from Game Start to FTC in a reasonable amount of time.

I briefly considered the combined TC like the one that sent Malcolm home in Game Changers, but that feels like it will be too much of a "fuck you" to anybody with even the semblance of a reputation.

Right, so as I mentioned, the house we originally wanted suddenly became available so I jumped right on it.
The house is officially booked!

That means our dates are locked in stone: August 9 - August 13. The house is in Newberg, Oregon, so it will be a 30-minute drive from my/Tanis' place and a 20-minute drive from Malkon's place.

I don't want to put financial stress on everyone during the holidays so I am going to officially start accepting payments on
January 15, 2019 at 12:01 PM PST
. The cost per person will be $151.84 for the house. If you are currently listed as "interested" and decide that you will not be attending for sure, please notify me as soon as possible so we can keep the list accurate.

Guess what time it is?

I will give you a hint: It's sign-up time.

Here's how to reserve a player slot!

1) Go to paypal.com. Create an account if you don't have one.
2) Click on "Send".
3) Input my wife's email address, since that's the account our family uses. It is adancer@wou.edu.
4) Pick "Sending to a friend". Do
NOT
say that you are paying for an item or service, otherwise a fee gets taken out and I have to pay taxes on the money. Don't do that. We're all friends here.
5) The cost-per-person for the Airbnb is
$151.83
. Tell PayPal you want to give me $151.83.
6)
Mention your username in the notes.
That way I actually know who is on the guest list.
7) That's pretty much it.

If you want to chip in extra money to help subsidize supplies or transportation costs that would be amazing but is my no means required.

As soon as the playerlist is full, I will give Airbnb the remainder of the money we owe them. If you decide you need to back out of Survivormeet III
before
this happens, let me know and I will return your money, no questions asked. Once I pay for the house in full, if you need to back out I will return your money as soon as a substitute player pays for Survivormeet.

So yeah, that's pretty much it. Can't wait to see all of you in Oregon!

Hey everyone, it is now April and we have five slots left! This is a bit of a problem because I have to pay for the rest of the AirBnb in June and my wife is pretending that she's not panicking but she's not fooling me.

If you are still wavering about whether or not to come, PLEASE try to make a decision either way as soon as possible.
If you need to pay in installments that's fine, I just need you to let me know.

This game WILL get filled. If that means we only have 16 players then that's fine; I'll just eat the costs of the 2 missing players and won't be thrilled but the game will go on. If that means I have to recruit some IRL friends in the area then I will do that too. I just want this to be a fun experience for everyone, and in order to do so I need to know who and how many are attending.

Anyway, yeah. Survivormeet will be fun. You should come.

With PiggyGal's payment we are now at 16 players! This is officially enough to run a game!

There are still two slots left, plus one more crew slot. Hopefully these get filled and we're designing a game for 18, but we will also have a 16-player design in case they don't.

The 10th is the deadline for me to pay the rest of the AirBnb bill, so I'll be doing that soon. This doesn't affect most of you; I have the money to cover everything. That being said, if you need to drop out you need to let me know ASAP because once I pay for the house you only get a refund if somebody else takes your slot.

I'm going to assume the "same" is about being shocked and not about not being able to come.

kdowns and CC have withdrawn, which drops us back to 14. McMenno is a likely in, so we're basically at 15. At this point I'm assuming we are definitely doing a 16-player game.

With the addition of Lady Lambdadelta I am pleased to announce that
the playerlist is full!
. If you still want to attend we won't say no to more crew people, but there are no more player slots.

The mods will be playtesting some more challenges this weekend and getting some last-minute prepwork done. Everybody get hype! (Everybody also send me any dietary restrictions if you have them so I can plan around that.)

The Discord server for spectating is now live! If you want in, hit me up for the link. By entering the server you agree you will not share any information there with players or other people who aren't in the server.

But yeah, argue about who you think will win! See a sneak peak of the starting tribes! It's all going down on Discord!

By the by, since we are a week out let's talk about some logistical things. Here is how I understand everyone is arriving in Portland:

Image

Most people will be going to my place as a staging area, and then we will break into carpools. Current drivers are me in a borrowed van, my wife, Malkon, Kittymo, and Ceph. Currently working on getting one more driver and then if my math is right we will have enough car slots to move everyone from my house to the Airbnb.

Hey everyone, get your ronpaul.gif's ready because
IT'S HAPPENING!

Here are some rules which have mostly been plagiarized from Reck and the Survivormeet II thread:
SOME GAME RULES!
  • No pregame alliances
. Sure, chat with people. We're all friends here. But don't explicitly make any pregame plans with people.
  • No pregame advantages
. I will say it like this: you cannot bring anything with you that will give you an advantage in the game, but anything within the game itself is fair. Example: you cannot bring 50 fake idols with you to fuck with people. But if you find stuff at the meet itself that you want to use to make a fake idol, that's legit.
  • No bitching.
We're gonna have a tight schedule for a day or two and tbh the last thing anyone wants to here is whining about how tired you are. Suck it up soldier, this is Survivor. I promise I'm not going to be mean on purpose but I'm also not letting the schedule get away from us this time. We have
    five mods
to keep things moving along, trust us, we know what we're doing.
  • The game is always on.
We have plenty of downtime scheduled during the game to try to alleviate burnout this time (more 30 minute breaks in between, longer periods for dinner and after the game ends at night), but even during that downtime, the game is still on. People could still pull each other aside to talk about plans, etc.
We are just leaving those periods of time as basically "free time". And hey, who knows? Playing board games with people may form some strong bonds anyway.
  • Play to win.
Picture this: it's the first morning we're there. You're hungover because you drank too much Friday night like an idiot. You're grumpy because we made you get up before noon. You're whiny. You just want to quit. So you tell people to vote you out and give up so you can lay in bed all day or play board games. This completely cheapens the experience for every other person who came to play. So please -- play your asses off, no matter how hungover you are, because it makes it all the sweeter of a victory for whoever wins and adds to the experience.
  • Don't be an idiot.
Last time Reck got hit with a ton of charges for damages. Some of those were bullshit (like the shower) but others were caused by attendees (the garbage can, the mysterious sheets that got peed on and left in a corner for some fucking reason). I have promised my wife that this won't be a problem at this meet, and if any of you turn me into a liar I will be very angry. The alcohol policy is as follows: beer and wine are fine, anything harder than that is not. Since my credit card is on file with Airbnb I reserve the right to cut people off.
That's all I can think of right now. Let's make this a great event, and I can't wait to see you all.

By now I believe most of you have either made it home or at least to your next destination. First off, this meet was so goddamn amazing. Every single one of you was such a delight to see in person, and the positive energy everybody had throughout the meet made everything feel smooth. During the first night I was a little on-edge because there is a bit of a gap between "in theory I could host a Survivormeet" and "oh god I am hosting a Survivormeet". But as I watched you all play the hell out of Survivor, I noticed that everybody was having
fun
and once I noticed that I felt extremely good for the rest of the meet.

Our finalists were all incredibly solid. I made it a point to intentionally not know a lot of what was going on strategywise, but I'm not at all surprised that 1) Radja won, and 2) all three finalists received multiple votes. Radja presented his game extremely well and had quite possibly my favorite mic drop moment of FTC. Vash started out with a weak opener but when he launched into that monologue about his personality and perceptions and chopping wood on Exile Island he turned into a snowball rolling down the hill getting bigger and bigger. Fenrir managed to play a solid UTR game despite his public idol find putting him on the radar, and I thought he did a very solid job of defending it. I thought Radja would win when votes were cast, but any of you three could have won and been a deserving winner.

Mitch, I'm sure by now you're sick of people telling you play an online game now, but
play an online game now!
You mentioned using your time at Redemple Temple to reflect on what went wrong and what you could have done better, and it showed when you demolished the slinky challenge, rejoined the game, and stomped all the way to F4. I also loved listening to Linguisticschat.

Monty was coming off a first-night-boot 13th-place finish at Lake Gaston, but he showed up in Oregon to play. He's a very likable, fun, ball of positivity of a person, and they needed an idol to get him out.

DV was a target for almost all of the merge, but he was so charming his allies had a lot of trouble turning on him; his reputation for being a strong social threat is well-earned.

Skelda was another player who I kept thinking was on the ropes and then kept surviving. He went from being targeted at the very first TC to joining the jury on the last day of the meet. Despite being a regular target he did great at finding allies willing to stick by his side.

Xof came into this game with several subgoals besides winning the whole thing, and she achieved all of them. She survived a TC, won a challenge, made merge, and survived until the final day. And Ms. I'm-Not-Good-At-Challenges surprised us all. She was probably the most effective person in the Bucket Brigade, anchored her team in College Bowl, and was just a few inches of thread away from winning the needle challenge. I've talked with her before about how non-anonymous games always have her fighting uphill because she starts the game with the burden of "everybody knows she's xof", but she rocked this game and I'm incredibly proud of her. <3

Entreri surprised me the most out of anybody on the playerlist. Prior to Survivormeet I hadn't really interacted directly with him a ton; all I knew was that he was a Diplomacy player who had been the early boot in several Survivor games and he also put a crazy amount of effort into studying Hive. As soon as I picked him up from the airport I could tell he was charismatic as hell; combined with his smarts I'm not surprised at all he seems to have been running the Clackamas Tribe.

Pants was a great player, a great juror, and a great person; I don't think anybody told me unprompted about how much fun they were having more than he did. I definitely want to hang out with him and Mitch in the future.

Lexi is an amazing person. During the spectator drafts everybody was worried that she would overplay too hard at the beginning, but she jumped in the driver's seat for the first four TCs of the game and stayed there comfortably for the entire pre-merge. On a non-game level she was a FANTASTIC cook, preparing fajitas the last night and what was without hyperbole the best Indian-style curry I have had in my life. Our grocery run was also a fun experience. Thank you again for everything.

Cody barely missed the merge, which made me sad, but when his tribe voted him out they unanimously told him they wanted him to win Redemption. He's a very introverted person, but he also has an innate ability to make people like him. I'm very sad we will never get to know what could have happened if a slinky had retracted just a liiiiiittle more stable manner.

Piggy, on the other hand, had everyone who voted her out hoping that she wouldn't win Redemption because they knew she'd be back for revenge. It was a great dynamic to watch, made all the better when she made a great comeback at the tangram challenge where she was the second-to-last player to find her pieces but put together the puzzle really fast.

Menno was a surprise boot for me; I still have no idea what happened that TC. This guy was a challenge beast. While we are all going to remember the sheer creativity of the slinky challenge, for me the defining Menno challenge performance will be the slide puzzle at the end of the relay; my comment about Gen Z texting was a joke but he seriously buzzsawed through that slide puzzle like it was nothing.

Meme was our last boot of the first night, and although I was sad to see somebody who flew all the way from Europe go home on night 1, the way it happened was so amazing that I think there was no better way you could have left the game. The man with the custom title "Banana Split" found himself in yet
another
ridiculous vote split, orchestrating a 2-2-2 vote. If he hadn't voted for his own ally he would have stayed in the game, but in the end his boot was extremely on-brand. He also caused the modteam a bit of anxiety by being so bad at finding tangram pieces we started to worry that we forgot to put one in his bucket, so that was fun. Thanks for being a good sport about those jokes.

PEG was our first person voted out of the game, and I suspect he knew going into this that he would be a target at his first TC. He didn't go home lying down, though, and his words about people making a mistake turned out to be true. After being voted out, though, he kept a positive attitude and never stopped having fun which is the most important thing at an event like this. PEG is one of the most chill people I've ever met and I am so glad that he came. He also gave us some footage that I won't spoil for those who weren't at the meet, but will definitely be going into the introduction when I edit the footage.

That's all of the players, but our crew made this such a great game as well. Ceph and Mina were beasts on the camera, following the players everywhere and pulling people aside to get confessionals. Tanis and Malkon were always running behind the scenes, helping set of challenges or make sure that we were ready to run TC. Malkon and Tanis also did a fantastic job during the design phase of this game; all three "primary" mods contributed to the challenge design and part of the reason we had the (IMHO) great balance we did was because of their ideas. I will admit to being skeptical about the puzzle balls at FIC, but not only did it run smoothly I think at least one puzzle ball was actively being played at all times on Monday.

You will note I didn't mention Ariel in that last paragraph, and that's because she deserves her own. She signed up originally just planning to do camerawork but she did SO FREAKING MUCH in just about every aspect of the meet. She made supply runs, she organized the props, she converted our planned schedule from being a photograph of a whiteboard to an actual usable spreadsheet, she bought the immunity idols and made the instructions for them, she did FAR more than her fair share of keeping the house clean... this woman did everything. Take away one of me, Malkon, Tanis, Ceph, or Mina, and the meet isn't nearly as good but we still get through it. Take away Ariel, and I'm skeptical the meet functions at all. Ariel is an amazing top-tier scummer and human being.

Quick shoutout to my wife Anastasia for helping with the pizza on the first night, transporting people to the Airbnb or to/from the airport, hosting a bunch of people at our house for several days, and giving me permission to host a meet at all what with the baby being born at the end of June. I love her and I personally couldn't have done any of this without her love and support.

I think that's pretty much it? I miss all of you already (except for Xof/Meme/Skelda who are still here) but I want to thank all of you again for making this such an incredibly positive experience.

And to my knowledge the carpets remained un-peed-on!
