sinking funds into hacking now when we'll almost certainly see it at least once later feels like its gonna cripple us too much short term

saving scraps is all well and good but we've got the super super handy shield 2. unless we get a decent drop/event I'm not sure what we'd be saving for.

I feel like Hacking is one of, if not the best extra system to have, as long as you've got the drones for it. It allows for so much finesse, it also opens up a much more reliable crew-cull method for our current gunship.

As for scraps, Shields 3, Engines, Power, Doors, Sector 3 shop, you name it, but I guess we're hiring a mantis

yeah absolutely but as long as you look for cloak+hacking as a priority we're almost certain to get it later when there's more value add imo -- hacking really shines when you up against ships with like 3-4 shields and 1000 weapons

in the meantime we can have some groovy crew members C:

Another pirate ship (Basic laser, Leto missile launcher), more stuff for us.

We'd want to refrain from firing missiles if we can make do with our Burst laser II, we take 1 hull damage as the enemy missile hits our Life Support.

We don't have enough shieldbreaking power to make good use a Beam (and in fact, are in serious risk of being walled by opposing ships in the next few sectors). The Artemis is helpful in that regard (and so we should hang onto it), but we need a bit more.

The Burst Laser and Charge Ion will both help with that, but will lead to rather different styles of ships. With the Charge Ion, we'll need to play very defensively later on, as using it to pierce a large number of shield layers is slow (you have to shoot a full charge followed by a number of partial charges in order to keep the opposing shields locked down), but it will eventually allow the rest of out weaponry to destroy anything. Meanwhile, the Burst Laser will allow us to put more immediate power in each volley; it'll probably need a third weapon to complement it at some point, but the final build we're looking at there will likely be more of a glass cannon, aiming to defeat opponents by sending a huge volley of lasers at an critical system and disabling their ship before they can overwhelm a comparative lack of defences.

I'm personally more inclined to recommend the Ion; Laser+Laser+Laser and Laser+Laser+Ion are decent three-weapon builds, but Laser+Ion+Ion is terrifying (and Laser+Ion+Beam can be good depending on the specific weapons involved), so the Ion will give us more flexibiity in what endgame builds we aim for later in the game (and even if we're very unlucky with shops and find no more weapons, at least Burst Laser 2 + Charge Ion is a combination that can't quite be outright walled by an opponent). The Charge Ion is also one of the best weapons for getting through Zoltan shields, which is always nice utility to have when you don't have a Drone system.

The crew decides the Charge Ion would be the best way to spend our scrap at the store, so that's what we've bought, along with 5 more fuel and 1 hull repair. (+5 fuel +1 hull + Charge Ion I -67 scraps)

Biggest encounter so far; Pirate Fighter with 2 Shield layers, Zotlan Shield, Ion I and Burst laser II (in hindsight I should've let the crew decide whether to fight here).

The Charge Ion makes its glorious debut as it takes down the Zotlan Shield along with the triple barrel, the enemy's firepower results in 1 hull and 1 Shield damage to us.

Our single shield layer is dropped by the ion, and the Burst laser II eats at our hull dealing 3 additional damage.
