Seems incorrect in most ways. Like... it's a movie that's made so that older kids can watch it, much like the others. But it's arguably the most adult star wars movie thematically, and the actual audience viewing is considerably older than teenage on average.

think a teen movie can appeal to broader audiences under uncommon circumstances, like being a decades-old franchise, or maybe just being very good

i watched the commuter yesterday and quite liked it; it's not a special movie though of course
wish i could've gotten more characterization of joanna instead of michael
i feel cheated! like i'd committed to watching the personality/emotional equivalent of a porno only to find 15 minutes in that the whole video is just strip tease
i've spent the last 5 minutes trying to find a good way to convey this metaphor and have edited this post multiple times

thanos still seems decidedly more powerful than marvel in the same way he was than strange; marvel's definitely not a free ticket
antman honestly seems in a lot of ways much closer to one

now spiderverse
spiderverse was a good superhero movie
there's no marvel movie as good as spiderverse

(and that's okay because next to sony, marvel has quantity and reliability and scale)

In post 4633, Davsto wrote:Really great and I enjoyed it except come on guys internal consistency! You can either have time be wibbly wobbly and not really have much cause and effect or you can have every action affect the future but not both! Ace other than that though, fulfilled my wishes, made the undoing of everything not feel cheap so infinity war's ending is still meaningful (thank fuck) and the pre-snap dead people stayed dead (thankkkk fuck)

i'm more going for "good". a lot of not-so-good movies are still acceptable to the the extent that i'd even go out of my way to watch them.
even then, parasite isn't the bar - i think there are many recent movies worse than it that are still good.
i'd say joker sits much closer to the border between good and mediocre for instance.

i think i mainly appreciated the cinematography and how successfully it built and used tension to create a couple moments of real, visceral shock
but when i try to, like, "think" about the plot or anything like that, there's nothing really there and what is there is yeah pretty derivative

maybe the most interesting thing to me about the movie is how it seems to relate as an artifact to our current cultural moment
like, the whole movie seems to sit somewhere between pandering to and criticizing its viewers, or maybe more specifically the "joker" fanbase
like it had an idea of what its viewers wanted of a joker movie, was disgusted with them about it, and threw it in their faces
that's sort of how i experienced it anyway. a lot of what makes the movie bad seems to be bad on purpose in a way that makes it hard for me to judge it holistically.

but even that's not super original. movies like taxi driver seemed to have similar themes. a movie about the joker seems a more direct medium for them, though?
