MS Plays Civ6! (UPDATED 3/1 - MULTIPLAYER + NEW LET'S PLAY)

This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games
(board, card, video, we're not picky)
.
Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

MS Plays Civ6! (UPDATED 3/1 - MULTIPLAYER + NEW LET'S PLAY)

I'm streaming! Come help my Civ6 playthroughs keep my interest... I guess?

We started a game shortly before release of the newest expansion to
Civilization VI ~ Gathering Storm
! It's updated, with new Civs and Leaders and with crazy crap like natural disasters and global warming ("FAKE NEWS!"), all the way to the actual
diplomacy
system! (I know, what will they think of next in these videogames?!)

Other co-leaders are always welcome, come join the stream to tell me what to play!

I'm not sure when I'll be getting into a streaming habit, but evenings EST/late night GMT are probably what my schedule will lean towards. Occasional daytime streams either on weekend days, or during odd hours of the day while without obligations. PM me or post if you want to know when I might next be on!

GAME 1: DUTCH / Rise & Fall DLC
Spoiler: Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina, and the Miniature Cult of the Tigers
Image

Spoiler: The Dutch Cultists of MafiaScum and their Fledgling Empire (Turn 70)
Image

Spoiler: The Cult of "Constant Vigilance" Rebukes the Buddhist Menace (Turn 120)
No promises, but we've already met Montezuma and he's not happy...

  • You and the AIs start with a Builder & Scout (to make early gameplay slightly faster/more interesting)
  • Hugely expanded religion - including no cap on Religions in a map (I'm just trying this one out, not sure how it'll go)
  • Far more EXP from Barbarians and far more Tribal Villages e.g. "Goody Huts"
  • 51 new Bonus and Luxuries from
  • Mines are slightly more balanced, no more "mine spam" on any Hill in the game (see here)
  • Late-game specialist buffs and production buffs (click links for specifics)
  • Adjacency bonuses for the Theatre Square/Acropolis, Industrial Zone/Hansa, and Commercial Hub/Suguba
  • Enhancements to the mod manager screen, the "choosing Leader screen" from right before you start a game, the "Leader loading screen" (with all the info on unique abilities and units, etc.), and the in-game Great Person screen. Also has UI enhancements for in-game... just poke around a bit to get a feel of what shows up and where
  • Adds a map generator with lots of options but
    DO NOT
use the "Import Natural Wonders from map data" setting. In my opinion, it's buggy and adds far too many NWs, which sometimes don't appear on correct tiles (example: "Lake" NWs with no surrounding coastline even, in the middle of the Ocean, NWs within 2 tiles of eachother... etc.)
  • Unique Districts now have unique icons with the Vanilla district's color (e.g. Acropolis for the Greek, Cothon for the Phoenicians, etc.)
  • Nicer and more historically accurate Civ/CS icons

GAME 2: ??? / R&F + Gathering Storm DLC???

We're also hosting at least 1 Cloud game! They go slow since people can take their turns whenever they have the time, and we'd prefer you to have Gathering Storm, but if you want we can start a new game with other DLC
or mods
, just post in-thread. We've always got people willing to play, and you can spectate games already in progress, I believe. See the quoted post(s) below for the join codes, then just go to
[ Multiplayer -> Play By Cloud -> Use Join Code (in the top right corner) ]
in order to play.

Session 2 closed with us reaching the Medieval Era after plopping down a bunch of cities and waging war on the Aztecs. Hilariously out-gunned as they were, the solid defense enabled by the mountains separating us resulted in me capturing only 1 Aztec city before extorting Montezuma for peace. Ugh. But on the bright side, Mvemba of nearby Kongo is happy with us for spreading "Constant Vigilance" to them. (That's our religion, thanks to Elbirn!)

Pictures to go with the update will happen probably tomorrow! If you want to suggest times for me to stream/another game we could start, lemme know.

I do want to try Kupe, and I haven't touched Suleiman.

But holy
CRAP
is Mansa Musa (Mali) SUPER fun. You basically get a ton of assorted buffs/debuffs to (mainly) production yields, which shifts the entire focus of your empire to Gpt and Fpt. You basically end up purchasing any time you have the option to, since your production is incredibly low and your Gpt hits +220/turn by Medieval, usually.

EDIT: Also want to try for a Culture/Diplo VC on Canada! Feels really fun and different to not have Surprise Wars even be a thing... like an anti-Darius.

I'd be down

And I don't feel hijacked, I just prefer a much faster-paced Civ experience because I get out of a game's mindset and then hardly ever find time to come back and actually finish stuff, it feels like. I end up starting it up and going "Oh, I wanna try this! Oh wait, I have that old save of the Gold/War Poundmaker game... eh I'd rather do New Shiny Game"

With like

Mansa Musa (Mali), Poundmaker (Cree), Wilfred Laurier (Canada), Gilgamesh (Sumer)... we could get a great assortment of Human Civs all basically allied and bankrolling eachother trying to collectively smoke the AI

Brass, Elbirn, Zito, me - cloud save file soon? We can figure out some
rules of engagement
guidelines before we start it

Also, yes the AI is weird and stuff but I like games to be a bit accessible and reproducible, so like Elbirn said I'll provide saves but usually I don't like/can't justify playing with content mods because A: ya boi wants the Steam achievements, and B: I just feel like I still haven't experienced everything Vanilla has to offer, ya know? I feel the same way about Skyrim mods, damn that game is STILL so fun

I think YMMV because my games have been fairly normal, and you always have outliers. Using any mods that could be messing with it? Both my CS spread and my barbies have been... basically what I expected? I think with CSes there are some map scripts which specifically might choose "ok, more CSes are allowed to be near Hungary, etc." or "let's split the CSes down this imaginary line... oh they all happen to be in this one area blocked by this one player, aw well" ya know?

Just like the Mali's start bias towards Desert sometimes yields like, a 2-tile desert and I shake my head in shame

Sometimes you get that kinda map

And sometimes you get a Mali start in a massive desert criss-crossed with rivers (the dream!) with the Dead Sea, the Eye of the Sahara, and the new white chalk desert NW and you thank the map seed gods for the fun game they've given you

Sounds awesome! Whole-hearted support from me.

Also, to whom it may concern, just finished the Pachacuti game I played during my shift yesterday. Very annoyed at the end: I did some of the "Send Aid" projects for some BS emergency for Hungary and got to first place... without realizing it would give me my final Diplomatic Victory point on the exact same turn I finally got my last space thingy done. It gave me the Diplo...

I gave you 2 saves in the Pachacuti folder. One is just before I went apeshit on Hungary and nuked them to death (6 Thermonukes, they had clustered cities, RIP), after which I smoked through their dead cities with a GDR & Modern Armor and razed a few out of spite, and also hoping I could completely wipe them out before the Diplomatic Victory went off on me. I may still go back and try to do that again, not sure. The other save is after I won. Shows how far I got in my rampage... feel free to try it out yourself! :)

The Wilhelmina game is in there too. One save is the map when I first started (I think) and the other is when I stopped playing when I upgraded to Gathering Storm. Friendly reminder: the Wilhelmina save only requires R&F!

When you download any of this stuff, find your Civ6 save folder, which for me on Windows is:
Documents > My Games > Sid Meier's Civilization VI > Saves
and I can probably help any OS X people who want to use them but don't know how. I used to be a Mac. :P

The Maori hidden OP is their replacement for the Amphitheater, the Marae, which gives +2 Culture / +2 Faith to every tile in the city with a "passable feature" or NW, which ends up translating to "+2 C/F to every tile with Woods, Rainforest, Marsh, Reef or a NW" and it's not a lot but holy crap does it add up - and I'm not even going Religion.

I get +1 Food to the Fishing Boats from being Maori, and ALL SHALLOW WATER is +1 Production from the new, amazing Auckland CS suzerain ability.

Hey uh, you may want to get Liang as Governor there and get the "Reinforced Materials" promotion. Those tiles will never get pillaged by the Volcanoes again. (Definitely worth checking out Governors and the GPlaza buildings, because I'm seeing some changes since R&F, I think.

idk I still don't build a GPlaza every game, but they're so good.

Spoiler: @Elbirn, this got long - sorry
In post 74, Elbirn wrote:But yeah Maori/Mali are broken to the point I'd suggest exterminating them as soon as you meet.
Kupe is incredibly fun and unique. And super powerful if you combine bonuses correctly, for basically any victory type. I would think he technically leans Religion/Domination/Diplomatic about equally. He's one of the few Civs I might have fun doing a prolonged pacifist Religion game on, since you can expand before anybody else and pressure cities all over the world (having the ability to enter Ocean is very valuable).

Mali has a mind-bogglelingly weak early game, to the point where if I really wanted to assert myself on the Mali in a game I may think of actually starting the game at a later era. But yeah, after they get to Medieval or Renn. they can buy their way to almost any victory but would do really well at Religion or Science.
Inca is good but idk how to play them.
Pachacuti is super fun. The biggest choice (in the early game, mostly) is balancing the use of OP hills next to mountains for
1.
"Terrace Farms. Terrace Farms... everywhere"
or 2.
Godly districts thanks to the availability of mountains and (hopefully) Machu Picchu, which you should always-100%-of-the-time rush as the Inca. Or as close to rush as you feel you have to. For those who don't know yet, Machu Picchu may be the best new wonder in Gathering Storm, IMO. It basically gives every single district the same major adjacency bonus-next-to-mountains that the Holy Site and the Campus get, which, coupled with the Inca start bias, amounts to insane amounts of... anything. Whether it's Culture, Science, or Gold - Production and Food are already plentiful to the Inca because we get to put citizens on fucking mountains, and then boost those mountains with Terrace Farms. Also, keep in mind, no other Civ will be able to get the yields out of your cities that you can, because they can't work the mountains or build more of the
SUPER OP
Chapaq Nan, which is basically just a mountain tunnel except available only to the Inca, like... half a game earlier on the tech tree than the mountain tunnel. Ugh, the Inca are
SO
good and
SO
fun. Try them, please.
I feel like Sweden is secretly good if you care about Diplo victory and focus on great people but mostly I just like their colors.
She's done horrible disservice by the AI, so idk how to do shit as her. Would have to play a game.
Ottomans seem really good on paper but I need a really good game as them and it just hasn't happened yet. They actually seem kind of meh except for maintaining a really strong wide empire after you've earned it with your 99999 military related abilities, but there's nothing else in their kit that gives them an advantage aside from conquering everything in sight.
This. I think they're mainly a versatile "at any stage in the game you could switch to military and it would go fine" kind of Civ. I set up my own little Battle Royale that ran in the background for like, 3-4 hours while I was working yesterday, and at the end Suleiman had carved swaths out of every other Civ and almost won Domination. I think they probably ended up winning for score, but yeah. Not sure what to do with them, haven't looked into it much, might do that tonight and report back.

Also, I'm taking my turn now - let's get an online session in maybe? :P I'm around tomorrow after 8pm EST

Hungary (like Sweden) feels like it's only really powerful in the hands of a player. The ultimate OP for Hungary is being able to upgrade levied CS units without paying Gold OR Strategic Resources, which is insane. As long as you've gotten Iron Working, you can mass armies of levied CS Swordsmen on another Civ by turn, like, 30 or 40, and just wipe them out completely. And I would think that's true of any large tech jump for military. Keep your actual empire and standing army adequate and bolster yourself for next to no cost whenever you need to.

Canada seems specifically suited for a hybrid Culture/Diplomatic victory because of their "Diplomatic Favor from tourism" thing (they could also go the Kandy-relic route), but they don't really get... any bonuses to... anything else. It's kinda sucky compared to other things, IMO. They get no production or early culture generation to stay on top of the wonders they need for Great Work optimization, they just get Ice Hockey Rinks. Yay?

In post 87, Maestro wrote:As long as you've gotten Iron Working, you can mass armies of levied CS Swordsmen on another Civ by turn, like, 30 or 40, and just wipe them out completely. And I would think that's true of any large tech jump for military.
Hungary gets a start bias towards CSes, btw, which inevitably means they basically have free armies in the early game that no other player can match. This jumps to an insurmountable lead if they happen to start with, like, Valletta or another good Militaristic CS that will have a large standing army.

Well, maybe it has more value intrinsically to Sweden (and Brazil, etc.) but Oracle is just amazing overall if you plan on having any Faith, because sniping particular GPs from the AI is what you usually need to do to get the ones you want, on every difficulty higher than Prince or whatever.

EDIT: Also, yeah even Canada declares wars on higher difficulties. Every Civ can be a "warring Civ" :P

Updated OP with Elbirn's game's join code, because I think people can still join and spectate. If not, whatever. Also updated with a poll for the Civ for my next streaming game, now that I've had a chance to try most of the new Gathering Storm Civs. The last 3 are the ones I haven't had a real chance to try or see in action, so I voted for those. Feel free to add your voice, and I'll try and nail down regular times that I'll be streaming!

Looks like the OP Eleanor of Aquitaine (French Edition!) is what I'll be playing, unless something boots it from top spot...

France it is! Polling is now closed, no Kingmaker needed :P
I'm going to be streaming the start soon, and getting a mod collection up for y'all
In post 110, Papa Zito wrote:Can you spectate if you don't have the DLC?
I'm honestly not sure if you caaaasan spectate, I just thought you could if you have the join code. Try it and report back?

EDIT: Took me a bit to figure out what mods I wanted to use, but I made a collection on the Workshop so you can try them out for yourselves, and use them with the save file. For those who want to try mods but don't want to be overwhelmed, or for those who like knowing what they've signed up for, here's a list of all the major changes instituted by this collection:

After we explored our immediate area, we met a few CSes and Suleiman attacked and took over Vilnius. I declared a retaliatory war and have now (quite a few turns later) retaken the CS.
Should we liberate them or keep it for ourselves?
They may eventually join us again if we have enough Loyalty pressure on them... but who knows?

Spoiler: Eleanor of Aquitaine's France, ca. 200,000,000 BC or whatever, turn 66
Image

Other things for those who didn't watch the stream:
  • Suleiman of the Ottomans is to the north, ostensibly along the road from Vilnius that disappears into the fog
  • Matthias of Hungary is due west, and he seems fine - I think we traded delegations
  • Kristina of Sweden is NW of us, hidden past some mountains - she has quite a few cities, IIRC
  • Mansa Musa of Mali is quite a ways to the east, near a group of CSes - he doesn't like us rn
  • We founded Protestantism and took Jesuit Education, meaning I can buy Campus/Theatre buildings with Faith - worth noting: I have the Religion Expanded mod, so a lot of the beliefs I may take I'm not sure if you'll have if you choose not to use the mods I've used, as listed in my last post
  • We snagged the Oracle! definitely a boon to a Culture game
And hopefully we can continue doing as well as we have been! Again, I ask you all:
should we liberate Vilnius or keep the city for ourselves?
Only you can help me decide...

Except the Culture victory isn't really a
Culture
victory, it's a
Tourism
victory. Culture CS only helps as much as it helps me keep up in Civics, I would think. But yeah, I see the point. @GIF: if you look at the screenshot and click "Open Image in New Tab" it should show at full res, 1000 x 1000 or whatever. The land is... ok? Good room for adjacency bonuses with the mountains, luxuries (IIRC) to the north, river, etc.

If I liberate, Kristina is more likely to steal the suzerainship from me, I would think. I have no idea how aggro any of the others will be in the long run. I get the feeling none of them are too happy with me just because we're on King and I haven't played on King often since GS came out because I've been derping around and trying the new shiny things.

Give the city to civ you feel like would war with, give the city to them for hella resource, go on war with them, and liberate it again.
I don't know that I feel like worrying about this kind of mini-game. They're so close to the rest of my empire, they're bound to flip at some point due to Great Works. I'm going to keep them and use them as the effective beachead against Suleiman.

Also, @Elbirn and anybody else who wanted the save, here is another shared file. It's technically the Advanced Settings configuration save, but with the exact same Random and Map seeds, it should produce an identical game. Just drop it into your saves folder, then let us see your starts and let us know how it goes! Maybe take a solid screenshot like I did around the same turn (70, this time) so we can follow along.

I don't think that's a bug so much as players sometimes noticing the underlying mechanics which are that Barb camps can't spawn except where players (including AI players and CSes) don't have vision, etc. like you said - your "workaround" is probably effective tbh but yeah, I do think that Maru probably just doesn't play with the normal amount of Barbs so plz keep that in mind

yes, Prince is the "normal" mode and the modes directly above and below are rather large degrees of difficulty harder/easier

so moving to Prince and then to King is going be a MUCH bigger difference than moving from Settler -> Warlord or whatever
the next big jump is Emperor -> Deity, IIRC

This is fine. This happens from time to time on anything not-Settler difficulty. Just to prepare you...

that's when you restart in SP :giggle:

Depends on what you need, as always, IMO. If your trade routes suffer because you're prioritizing other things, stick to one - I'd prefer Harbor, if you have a choice, but that's probably personal pref since Merchants and Admirals often have similar retires. On a more naval map, go more Harbors. Mausoleum is really REALLY nice if you've got the Harbers in that scenario, and the AI never seems to rush it. You can toss up some incredible naval units if you combine (for instance) double-"fleet/armada" Admirals with double-"free promo" Admirals.

Sorry, probably me Elbirn. Really crazy, emotionally-draining week. Doing my turn now if it's me - but I'd also be interested in 1v1.

@Maruchan: Turning off Domination Victory doesn't prevent the other person from declaring war and essentially wiping you out, maybe leaving you with like, 1 city, and then switching entirely to a new wincon. They'll have such a huge advantage the game is over even without Domination.

Who are the like, “peaceful” AIs? We should do a 6p with us 3 and 3 low-aggression Civs. Would be kind of fun to see what would happen.

I’m also finally realizing why different players can set the diff to their own setting in MP AI matches, and it’s because if you’re on Settler and everybody else is on Emperor, the AI will love you and dote on you and nuke the Emperors. Weird that I never thought of that before.
