This forum is specifically for discussing non-Mafia games

Playing
such games should happen in the Mish Mash forum, of course.

Huh, I've only seen Splendor for like $40 elsewhere. Doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy... "light" games, to me, need to be a 15-30 minute ordeal, not 30-60min.

I've actually been looking for more games like Love Letter, Hanabi, Mascarade, and Coup. Our group has definitely gravitated towards the quick burst micro games to space out other activities. Our usual hangouts involve people coming and going at random times, so being able to start and finish a game in under 30 minutes is pretty important.

Also, Juls, from my understanding there's a group that gets together to play Battlestar Galactica via Vassal every couple of weeks. (Mostly Brits I think). But also, lots of board games get run in MishMash, which is way easier to parse and play at your own pace. I've played Game of Thrones several times on Vassal with a few Scummers.

I'd actually like to get a BSW group going again, playing random games with scumchatters on BSW was like my favorite thing ever.

I've had Agricola in a box for ~6 months now and all of us are too lazy to read the rulebook.

I'd be down for MishMash boardgames.

Also, there's a pretty good CSI sale right now: clicky.

Highlights:
- Ares Project @ $12
- Fluxx @ $7
- Steam Park @ $25

Basics of Takenoko:

There are 3 ways to score points:
- Panda cards (move the Panda to eat the required amount of bamboo)
- Gardener cards (grow certain bamboo stalks to a certain height)
- Emperor cards (lay out the garden tiles in a certain pattern)

On your turn you get two actions to take from the following five options:
- Draw 3 garden tiles, and pick one to place
- Grab irrigation
- Move Gardener to grow bamboo
- Move Panda to eat bamboo
- Draw a new victory card (either Panda, Gardener, or Emperor card)

Free actions on each turn:
- Place irrigation
- Place powerups/modifiers
- Claim a victory card (if you complete a condition on a Panda/Gardener/Emperor card)

Tiles only grow bamboo if they're irrigated. Most victory points cards require the tiles being used to score to be irrigated as well.

Game continues until someone has claimed/revealed 9 victory cards, then there's one last round, then most points wins. Ezpz.

too
random to be a solid engine-builder, but it was definitely fun to play.

Hmm. Might need to have a go with the drafting mechanic then, but it still felt like it was too reliant on the right dice rolls at the right time to make your engine go off... not that it's particularly egregious, it's just that the less randomness in a game, the more I like it. (It's why I love Terra Mystica so much, they've essentially made a game with no random factors in it.)

I've been looking for a good 'Whodunnit?' type game. I guess similar to Battlestar Galactica, but with more Cluedo elements of gathering evidence and putting together the puzzle, but I'm not sure anything like that exists.

I love it!

Haven't been able to play it much since I moved but it's quite fun. The meta right now (at least before the new expansion came out) was that people would play these janky combo decks and that was the only thing valid to play because it was so dominant... I think the new xpac fixed that a bit.

The dice are really just great to hold and play with and the game itself is simple enough to enjoy a casual game but complex enough to figure out highly tactical builds to optimize your team.

finally got to play some of my Christmas haul last night:

Iota:
Okay, this game is just...
wow
. It's a tiny game and it's deceptively easy to explain/understand, but my god I could almost feel my brain heating up from how hard it was having to work. The colors and shapes and numbers were all swirling around... wow. It feels like a super genius version of Scrabble. Playing this game is like learning to speak a different language in how your brain has to process and view the board and line up plays. I don't think this will get a TON of play but it will probably get some of the, "waiting around for people to show up" play.

Sushi Go!:
The drafting mechanic is so simple... this is basically 7 Wonders for babies. Not that it's a bad thing at all -- it just didn't feel like there was a whole lot to it. Granted, maybe things become a little more evident in future playthroughs (like how many nagiri cards you should take on average) but the fact that it doesn't really evolve over its three rounds makes me a little sad. If they even through in a few big score cards near the end based on your first two rounds/sets, I think it'd work. But it's quick and painless to setup and play, which means it'll probably see a ton of "downtime between games while people mingle and smoke" play at our house.

Suburubia:
Ho. Lee. Fuck. This game. This fucking game. First off, WOW it takes way longer to complete than I originally thought it would. It took us about 2.5 hours to play, with a quick 5 minute smoke break in the middle. But that first playthrough was like constant revelation after revelation. I can see how deeply strategic this game is... and the way it takes the drafting mechanic from Smallworld and re-appropriates it here is absolutely beautiful. What a gorgeous game, by the way... it's so well designed. It's a game where the theme/flavor is equally as strong as the mechanics, and I fucking LOVED it. While waiting for my turn, I'd just read through the different tiles and chuckle at how clever some of the flavor -> mechanics translations were. The last round, when we were in the C tiles, everyone was jittery and nervous, waiting for that 1 More Turn tile to flip. And when it did... man, everyone went into a panic on the last turn. And man, the reveal of the secret goals at the end was fucking great! I sort of wish you had more than one secret goal to go for, a la Keyflower, because only having the one feels a little bit like... the game is decided before final scoring. But this was great, and the mechanics were great, and while it took a little bit too long (compared to Keyflower, which takes like an hour tops) I think part of that might've been us not knowing the tiles and having to read them all over and over again.

Oh yeah and the speedbump mechanic... holy shit, that is GENIUS! Not only does it stop games from becoming snowball runaway victories, but it forces an interesting balancing mechanic in your strategies. I accidentally (seriously, without trying) kept getting reputation gains in the early game, so eventually my reputation was at +6 while everyone else had +1 or 0, which meant I was hitting tons of speedbumps. Eventually I had to buy a tile and place it STRATEGICALLY for the negative effect to bump down my reputation so I could build up a little bit of income.

Just... what a brilliant fucking game.

Sheriff of Nottingham arrives next week.

Yeah, that's my feeling, as well. Though, it is much quicker than 7 Wonders (like 15 minutes), and it's easier to get everything out quickly and get going. No removing cards based on number of players, no special ages to distribute, and it's a lot less complicated.

so I got Sheriff of Nottingham in finally, and it's p great. The social manipulation is just delectable. Pretty easy game (and why the fuck are there so many coins when it's a ZERO SUM GAME) and I can't wait to replay it.

UMMM. Also. I got Mage Wars for my birthday.

So spells/enchants/creatures are all summoned by the mage?

And once I've summoned something, I've taken my mage's "action" for the turn?

SO why are there two cards prepared at the start of the turn if you can only cast one?

Gamma brought over XCOM: The Board Game tonight. Pretty mixed opinions, but my general thought is that you need to play it at least once.

THE GOOD

- The companion app for the game adds a HELL of a lot and really makes an argument for why board game augmentation with digital tech is a good idea... the randomization happens seamlessly, and the interface reacts to how poorly you're doing (tons of UFOs = tons of interference = app going crazy)
- Each position feels unique and self-contained to the point where you don't quarterback because you don't feel like you can be arsed to bother with what the fuck the science officer is researching when you have three enemies in the goddamn base
- The game always feels like a struggle and like you're against overwhelming odds... not until the very last moment do you think "this is easy", which gives it a sense of high stakes

THE BAD

- The unique aspects of each role are really just minor in the grand scheme of things. Science Officer plays with a hand of cards; Commander manages a "budget" (aka just counts a few coins each round); Squad Leader has higher threat in his missions; Communications Officer manages the app)... outside of that, everyone is doing the exact same activity: rolling X dice against enemies to defeat them, where X is the number of units you deployed during the timed round
- There is a LOT of dice rolling, and the dice are heavily skewed against you (4 sides of failures, 2 successes) so even if you roll the maximum dice each turn, you're still HEAVILY relying on RNG to fall your way
- The game comes with no physical rulebook so the first playthrough, a lot of stuff is just thrown at you that you're unsure how to handle
- Victory feels deflated... the final mission cards aren't terribly exciting and don't introduce any new mechanics, and by the time you get there, you have enough tech to likely complete the mission with no problems. Probably harder on other difficulties, but still -- when you have that many tech cards, it's easy to just map out the rest of the round and know whether you win or not, so winning has like zero fanfare

THE UGLY

- Though the app is a great idea, I think it covers up lazy design. There's no way to understand how certain mechanics negatively or positively impact you because it's all hidden behind the magic of the app. PANIC INCREASES! Okay, so what? Why am I getting more crises each turn now? Why the hell are things happening out of order? In reality, the app is shiny, but seems to just be a crutch. In a co-op game, especially, it's important to understand all mechanisms at play and see what happens.

I'd recommend playing it, but not buying it.

There's a walkthrough, yeah, but it doesn't really explain every detail, and it explains them in an order that leaves you sometimes wondering, "Okay but what about this situation?"

And it was a bit of a problem, I think... I mean, it's fine and all, but part of the most fun parts was increasing the panic meter yourself, physically, on the game board, after failing a challenge. Then the app is like "input panic levels", and you do it, and you have no idea if higher panic actually has an effect on anything at all because all of the app's workings are a secret. It just obscures a huge part of the game.

So, I need more quick, drop in drop out type games to play at parties.

Cards Against Humanity is sort of what I mean, though it's a pretty boring game. Something that can handle a ton of players and people can come and go as they please, or it has a short runtime.

COMPLETELY FORGOT that I backed Vault Wars awhile ago, and it only has a few days left till it's Kickstarted!

It's designed by the guy who did Dead of Winter. It's a bidding/bluffing game based sort of on the television show Pawn Stars or Storage Wars or any of those things... each player drafts a set of "vaults" that will be put up for auction one by one, and each vault has different properties. (IE: There are six items in the vault, but you only get to see one of them... or there are only three items in the vault, but you get to see all three... or, there are a ton of items in the vault, and the top two bidders get to draft them). You either pick up gems which are worth victory points, gear/weapons which are worth gold so you can bid on more stuff(or VP bonuses), or artifacts which give you buffs and bonuses to your gameplay. It's fast-paced, fun, and quick (under an hour). As one of the reviewers said, it's a game with hidden information, but isn't a deduction game... it's a game that encourages bluffing and deception, yet isn't about lying... it weaves all of these mechanics together in a psychologically engaging way to provide a wholly unique experience.

Anyway, check it out, if you want, and back it.

we went to a fun local indie game developers meetup where we playtested alpha phase board games and then got some free board games as a result!

We also purchased a couple, so the Commune picked up:

Lagoon: Land of Druids
Medieval Mastery
Alliances
Seas of Iron
Bohnanza
Hive Pocket
Love Letter (replacement copy because someone ruined my last copy)
City of Horror
Mascarade Expansion

All in all, a pretty great haul. I'm really stoked to try out Bohnanza and City of Horror.

We only got to playtest two games. One was called 'Tourist Trap'. Everyone worked running a tourist stall on the same highway and we had to bid/compete over customers. We set up exhibits that had various point values and categories to attract customers. Customers were one of twelve different meeple types that had various bonus effects if you combo'd them well. Everyone bids simultaneously then you pick them up in order, 1-2-3-4-5, so sometimes other people can throw off your bids. There were also power tokens that let you shuffle/rearrange the rows of customers, but we didn't play that, since he wanted to focus group the bidding portion of the game pretty hard. We had some really good ideas, I think. There's definitely a game there and it could be pretty cool.

The other one we played was 'Jinx!'. It's a pretty simple social/party game... flip a card, then two people go "3...2...1..." and have to say something in that category. If they match, say something not in the category, or screw up in any other way, you lose the round. If they both name different things, you go up 1 on the points track. You keep going in a circle and can bank at any time. Game objective is to get 100 points before you draw too many cards from the penalty deck and spell out "JINX!" on the board. It was... simple. Something we really don't need a game for because you can play it without any components or pieces. But a fun little game regardless.

LET"S PLAY PLEASE! It's one of my faves. Gamma didn't like it because he didn't think there was a ton of strategy, maybe. Brock was lukewarm.

It's a simple game but the various mechanics make it a bit hard to grasp the strategy until you've played a few times.

The lack of stock on DoW has cooled me off to the idea that I need it. I'll wait to play it when someone else has it and make my decision. It also feels very similar to City of Horrors, which the Commune just picked up... so between us having CoH and BSG, DoW might be redundant.

CDB might be bringing it already, Poro.

I don't see why we'd use Tabletop Simulator when Vassal is better supported and free.

again, Vassal exists, and paying $15 to use a platform that has IP-infringement-inviting mods that does the same thing as Vassal barely makes sense at all

You're paying $15 for...nothing. It's a blank slate.

It's not Settlers, but as far as more "complex" games go past Settlers/Ticket to Ride, it's pretty simplistic.

I mean, you don't really have to make that many choices, and the complexity comes from the race/class combinations, which are randomized and pre-selected for you.

I don't think Smallworld has a ton of deep strategic possibilities (or even tactical ones).

It's more that the little keywords they use are so niche and specific that there's a TON of rulebook hopping since no helptext is written on cards. Plus, movement around the board is not really intuitive, and what you can/can't move to/from is ridiculously specific

my copy of
Vault Wars
finally came in... it's pretty fucking great. The only qualm I have is that the equipment cards are rather underwhelming and don't feel like they impact the game that much, but I love the design on this.

Speaking of Jon Gilmour, we also finally picked up
Dead of Winter
. Played it once. Took a loooong time. I might just be over games that take longer than 90 minutes. But I really liked the mechanics in play.

well, they're published by the same people, but not the same designer

Memoir 44 is pretty great for a 1v1 tactics game. It's not super strategic or politicky (which are the things I like in my war games) but it's about as perfect as a purely tactical (but admittedly light) game can get

i mean, most of them? Agricola, Kingsburg, Five Tribes, Suburbia, Splendor

they all have *light* interaction but not direct player interaction. they're about on equal footing with RFTG's "try to bid on phases based on what other players will likely do/need"

I could see that argument for Agricola. But I still think the interaction is pretty minor and comparable to strategically selecting phases in RFTG to stop your opponents from getting the phases they need to have their engine go off.

@TBM: Kemet or Cyclades. They're similar games by the same publisher.
Kemet is more like a fast-paced brawl. You're constantly skirmishing and then regrouping and running out to attack again, all while trying to build your engine. Kemet encourages people to start punching each other in the face as early as the first turn, and incentivizes repeat assaults and bloodshed. It's bananas. You win by attacking, by defending, or by going for a risky economic only route.

Cyclades is a bit more strategic. Still fairly fast paced for a "war game" (more like area control game) but a little more chaotic w/ dice rolls in combat (not highly random dice rolls though). A lot more base building/engine building, with fighting being less common. Still highly interactive. More options and paths to victory than direct confrontation/combat, if that's your thing.

Also if theme matters, Kemet is Egyptian and Cyclades is Greek.

Patchwork is amazing. A+

Agricola is pretty complex and intimidating to learn. But it's a classic for a reason.

Pandemic Legacy is really more fun with more people because it's a living game. You get to tear up cards and mark on the board and put stickers on characters, etc. Each playthrough is different. I can imagine it being fun for two, but then you'd each control two characters during the game and that's kinda meh.

Regular Pandemic is probably where you'd want to start. Are you wanting co-op or competitive games?

In post 2582, chamber wrote:The term is poorly defined and I think first came about to separate the european board games coming out in the early 2000's from the traditional like monopoly. I'd differentiate it from 'ameritrash' games in the following ways:

Indirect competition rather than direct competition (I'm going to out bid you for something, or use a limited resource before you can, not steal territory from you, or kill your units).
No elimination, you play to the end even if you are doing terribly.
Some abstracted victory condition like Victory Points rather than something like player elimination.

You can probably find counter examples where I'd ignore 1 or more of those though, like powergrid is euro as heck and doesn't use victory points.
I think that's all fairly accurate?

I would also say that in Ameritrash game, the "theme" wins out over the mechanics.

Like, Betrayal At House on the Hill... Ameritrash. Heavily themed, and the theme is most of the charm. Same with Arkham Horror, Battlestar Galactica, Cosmic Encounter.

Eurogames are way more "strategic". I don't even think Eurogames have to be particularly complex, it's more that they're all about the tactics/strategy and less about the journey.

My thing is I don't like games with zero player interaction.

I like having interaction, even if it's not directly. Five Tribes is kind of my ideal board game for that very reason.

What hidden movement game would you put above it?
Probably Fury of Dracula, if you're going to play any of them. But even FoD has problems and also takes FOREVER.

Mister X is kind of the "default" one people recommend because it's an updated version of Scotland Yard.

Letters from Whitechapel is good but it kinda just feels like Mister X with needless other modular shit thrown in

you mean from your own personal hand/deck?

it's like dominion rules

you reshuffle the discard pile when it runs out but if you already have cards in your "hand" or whatever you don't reshuffle those and you don't reshuffle the top visible card

For real. There's something so damn satisfying about picking up the pieces and dropping them, Mancala-style. And the way you can both pull off a killer move AND fuck over your opponents by dropping pieces in their way is just joyous.

I haven't checked out the expansions yet but I can only imagine improving upon a great formula.

re: Five Tribes
there really isn't analysis paralysis... you want to take the move that's awesome and good for you before someone else does. if you can't do that, then make sure nobody else can do anything cool and exciting.

it looks overwhelming due to the amount of pieces but when you are actually in the moment there are only a handful of moves to consider at a time

It's light, it's sort-of-worker-placementy but you use dice as the 'workers' you're placing and you need them to add up to whatever you're getting, and you can have a strategy from the start (or after your first die rolls at least) you're planning to work towards while changing it around based on what dice you get and what other people are going for, around 90 minutes long. I vaguely remember that some people really like the expansion or only like the game with the expansion or something like that but I've forgotten what it adds and I'm sure someone else around here has an opinion on that.
Kingsburg is a great choice though I do think I wouldn't play it without the expansion nowadays?

But if you haven't played it, I think it would work

I mean I think any way you can dress it up is good considering there are countless other shows out there that have probably already done the same board games you're going to do so like, it has to be kitschy or unique

maybe do it tournament or gauntlet style in seasons and have a rotating cast, keep points based on who wins, have some megabattle for the finale

mysterium is FANTASTIC if you have a good creative group to play with. it's co-op and a hell of a lot of fun with tons of replayability.
dead of winter is some people's cup of tea. i own it. it's not mine. it's fun but it is long and takes forever to set up
takenoko is super chill and fun and probably good for kids if they're gonna be involved? also fun to just chill & play online
carcassonne is a good gateway game for new board gamers. sort of like the archetypal "build the board" mechanic
pandemic was a good start but IMO there's TONS of other cooperative games that took the pandemic mechanics and expanded on them
ticket to ride, like carcassonne, is a good gateway game for new board gamers. this one's probably a lot more basic than carcassonne. also if you HAVE TO HAVE IT, get the europe version, it's the best one

through the ages is amazing in terms of how the mechanics and flavor all blend together, but yeah, the digital version is WAY BETTER because the physical version involves about 60% of your time being scorekeeping and upkeep

fun - today, me/Ythan/UT/Gammagooey/hubby all played
Battle for Rokugan
.

the Game of Thrones board game was one of my top five favorite games EVER, but it was sooooo long and complicated

this game takes the same fun elements from Game of Thrones, and just simplifies it.
no more "muster units separately and then play orders on them" -- your march orders are your units, so it removes an entire complicated phase of the game
no more supply limits constantly making you double check all your units to see if you're breaking anything

it removes so much of the fiddly bits. and it's SUPER simple and streamlined due to it... which lets them introduce some more fun mechanics like secret objectives, territory control bonuses, etc.

anyway i really love this game. i have no reason to ever have the Game of Thrones board game hit the table again? other than for flavor purposes

the one downside is that this game isn't designed with the "force people to make political alliances" thing in mind. you can still do that, of course -- but the mechanics and map design don't NECESSITATE it. there are also units that you can drop in somewhere even if you're not adjacent, which also sort of destroys the need for alliance building

It is the most obvious successor to GOT imo

there are other games that do the area control mechanics better

but this feels like they took at look at GOT (which is like 7 years old at this point holy shit) and said "huh, this game feels dated" and streamlined a lot and dropped the theme

my biggest issue with it is that upon reflection, the clans you play as all feel too similar. they all have the same pool of 26 tokens, but each clan gets one special token that only they can use, and then they all have a minor passive ability

the variance comes in drawing combat tokens each round. you don't know when you're going to draw your "big" moves, so each round feels fresh and different. which removes the analysis paralysis that came from GOT, where you want to plan 10 moves out

GLOOMHAVEN SHIPS ON THE 19TH SUPPOSEDLY HYPE

@molla I would say a board game probably isn't a board game if it's played solely via screen/phone

but two rooms and a boom sucks

i would be buying it probably if it weren't so expensive. if it was at the 40-50 dollar price point id back it. $100 (with shipping) is way too much. Maybe I'll wait for retail

it's really not

I've played probably... 30 games of 2R1B.

The game is just bad. The sharing mechanics are half-assed and they don't work as well as they should on paper.
The special roles are way too hit or miss.
Far too often people just go "uhh fuck it ok I'll share" and by that point it's too late.
Or you can shit starting randomization of rooms and one team just locks the win from the start.

I'm gonna guess they have the chess piece puzzle I've seen in a few escape rooms. They'll probably have some traditional board games around with pieces that are clues to things. Maybe some kind of Monopoly Money puzzle that's the answer to a padlock. Deck of cards where certain cards are marked or missing. That sort of thing.

I'm gonna highly recommend Set A Watch. We played it this past weekend and it's a blast. It's the right kind of co-op and it forces you to make real, interesting choices. And I think the classes are different/varied enough that it prevents quarterbacking.

can you elaborate on the prevention of quarterbacking? That's always the major weakness to coop games to me, so any without a traitor element tends to fail the test. But if there's a way to avoid it that a game has figured out, that's great.
For us, it was more about the fact that each player has their own board and spells and abilities, etc to keep track of. It feels more like a puzzle: "How should we use our combined abilities to tackle the challenge?" There are a bunch of variables -- which abilities do you currently have equipped? How does it synergize with other things?

It felt really collaborative. It's possible once you've played enough to know every class inside and out that it has quarterbacking, but with I think 10? classes to play/learn, that'll take a while.

(Also shoutout to Gloomhaven for being un-quarterback-able and being an amazing game all around.)

It came out before Arena was a thing. I *think* it's just the same base game but they renamed it later.
