Marie Bergmann poured herself a second glass of brandy and leaned back into her chair, listening to the winter rain hammering against the window. She’d moved back to rural Nebraska to be near her son Martin, but all she felt was a crippling sense of loneliness. The brandy was the only thing that calmed the night terrors that had plagued her since her husband’s death. Even in the rare moments where her grief subsided, what replaced it was a mixture of anger and fear: anger at the failure of those she trusted to protect her husband as he investigated a criminal syndicate operating in downtown Chicago, who’d left him unguarded the night he was shot dead; and fear for her only son, who’d followed his father into law enforcement in their hometown of Amesbury.

Outside, there was the sound of sirens. Marie ignored them. Wherever they were going, it wasn’t here.

Activity & Voting

This 911 call was made from a house in Amesbury, Marion County, shortly before midnight on the evening of the 30th November this year. Amesbury Police Department have released it, in the hope that anyone with information as to the events of that night will come forward.

AMESBURY COP KILLED IN SHOOTOUT AT HOME

Police in Amesbury are looking for leads after a police officer was shot dead in a gunfight at his Lincoln Drive home late on Friday night. Sergeant Martin Bergmann, 27, was found dead by fellow police officers shortly after midnight along with the bodies of two suspected assailants, whom police believe were killed by Bergmann in a brief shootout before his death. Bergmann’s death comes only weeks after his father, John Davis Bergmann, an FBI agent and Amesbury native, was murdered in Chicago by a criminal racket it is believed he was tasked with investigating. Bergmann called 911 shortly before his death, asking for police assistance and saying a group of men were attempting to break into his home, and police believe that several assailants escaped the scene before police arrived. Police have appealed to the public for any information regarding the killing of Sergeant Bergmann, who leaves behind his mother Marie and two younger sisters.

The young detective sergeant leaned back in his and raised a hand to his forehead in stress. Across the desk from him, his superior, the senior sheriff’s deputy for Marion County, was giving him a look of pure frustration.

“I don’t care if he was an officer, I’m not calling in the FBI for a small-town shooting! This isn’t Canada, this crap happens every day!” barked the sheriff’s deputy.

“Bob, have you not been listening to me?” the sergeant responded. “Sergeant Bergmann’s father was working on some seriously high-level organised crime ring when he was killed, we have no idea if this was linked and if it is who knows what we might have on our hands!”

“If it was linked, that is. You have nothing to suggest it was beyond paranoia and rumour.” The sheriff’s deputy sighed. “It was probably a burglary gone wrong, Carl. I know he was your colleague and I know you looked up to him but there’s nothing we can do except find the bastards that killed him, and that would be a damn sight hard with the federals running around the place sticking their noses in everything, you know that.”

The sergeant sighed. Bob was right, he did know it.

The phone began to ring on the sergeant’s desk, but before he could pick it up Bob reached out and took it himself.

“Robert Feltz, county sheriff’s deputy, how can we help?” he said.

A few seconds passed, and then, to the onlooking sergeant, the colour seemed to drain out of the sheriff’s deputy’s face.

Bob silently reached out and hit the hold button on the answering machine. As he did so, Carl felt a strange sense of dread rising in his stomach.

“Sergeant, call in the FBI.”

“Agent Rodgers, what can you tell us about the murders!”

“The local police will hold a press conference shortly, until then can you get out of my way!” the FBI agent responded tartly to the small group of journalists that had gathered near the side entrance of the police station.

Agent Rodgers didn’t like journalists. They got in the way. He barged his way past the one who’d been harrying him, a CNN crime reporter he vaguely remembered from a difficult press conference in Minneapolis after a spate of serial killings, and made his way through a cramped corridor to a stuffy meeting room where about fifteen cops had crammed themselves around what looked like a dining table. He recognised the man who he knew to be the county sheriff from a news report he’d seen the previous night, shortly after receiving the call about a string of seemingly connected murders in Amesbury, Nebraska.

The sheriff saw him at the door and shuffled round the edge of the table to him.

“You must be Al Rodgers, welcome,” the sheriff said.

“That’s me.” Agent Rodgers replied. “No formalities please, I’ve been briefed but go over the situation for me again, the pen-pushers always forget something.”

“Alright then. Local cop was shot at his home Friday night, managed to kill two of his attackers before they did him but at least three others got away. Then yesterday evening we found someone strung up from a tree just outside town, IDed him from his prints as Julian Brewer. We put his name in the database and it turns out he was into some pretty dark shit in Chicago, got a long record of involvement with one of the big mafia families, suspected of a couple murders but nothing was ever proven. Then a local was found shot dead outside the town hall this morning.”

Agent Rodgers was already going over the details in his head. Most likely a pretty boring case; local cop investigates someone with connections, gets stung. Of course, the locals would be out of their depth, but he dealt with this stuff every day.

“Well if that’s it I better-” Agent Rodgers begun before the sheriff cut him off.

“It’s not.”

And from the flustered look now on the sheriff’s face, the agent knew. This was going to be an interesting case after all.

Detective Sergeant Carl Harrison stared into his morning coffee. He was having something of a crisis of faith in his choice of employment.

When he’d joined Amesbury Police Department 18 months earlier, Sergeant Bergmann had quickly become not just his mentor, but one of his closest friends. Carl had been on the late-night shift at the station on Friday night, and had been the first officer on the scene at Sergeant Bergmann’s murder. Already Carl knew he wouldn’t forget that terrible scene for as long as he lived.

But if Sergeant Bergmann’s death had left him heartbroken, the events of the previous evening had made his blood freeze. On after the murder of a citizen, seemingly by the same gang of criminals, outside the town hall late on Sunday night, several unidentified townsfolk had cornered a suspected member of the group in a field on the edge of town and lynched him. Once again, Carl had been called to the scene, where he instantly identified the lynched mafioso (the FBI agents who had flown in the previous day were now certain that the crimes were linked to the Chicago mafia) as a trainee constable from the county police department that had recently been reassigned to Amesbury. FBI Agent Rodgers, on the other hand, had identified his body as that of a criminal who’d vanished from Chicago 18 months earlier.

And Carl had thought to himself, if he couldn’t even trust his fellow officers, who could he trust? And who could keep the people of his hometown safe if there were even crooks amongst the cops?

“Resign?!” Bob Feltz was apoplectic with rage. “We’ve had seven murders in the last week! How could you resign on us?”

“I’ve already said, I’ll stay until the end of the investigation, but not a day more,” Sergeant Harrison replied. “I wouldn’t leave you short-staffed like that. But I’m also not staying.”

Bob fell back into the break room chair.

“Why Carl? I know this is… challenging but you’ve spent four years building your career here and you’re a good officer. And do you really think Martin would’ve wanted you leaving the force so soon after his death?”

“But that’s the point,” Carl sighed, “We don’t know what Martin would’ve wanted. Because he’s dead. At the hands of, among others, one of our colleagues!”

“I joined the police because I wanted to give something back,” Carl continued. “But what good can I do when criminal gangs, the mafia and who knows else can join the cops? If I can’t trust the police, am I not just in another gang, but with a uniform and a pension?”

“Now that’s unfair Carl,” Bob rebuked him. “We all joined up to make our country a safer place, did we not?”

But, having already seen the young man shot in the head in town that night, even Bob was starting to doubt that he could do that.

“Yup. Police have ordered an autopsy but I’m pretty sure the cause of death was ‘shotgun to the face’” the young paramedic replied.

The paramedic watched as the emergency room secretary turned an interesting shade of green.

“Well I’ll… record it as ‘dead on arrival’” he sputtered out after a long pause.

“You do that.”

The paramedic walked back to her ambulance, wiping beads of sweat from her brow. If tonight was anything like the last few, this was going to be a long shift.

“Yes,” replied the younger FBI agent, “He’s linked to the same criminal ring Bergmann’s father was investigating.”

“Do we know if he’s still in the area?”

“No, but it’s possible,” came the reply. “We’ve given all the officers the man’s description but with no confirmed sightings, he could be back in Chicago by now.”

“Well we keep looking. See what comes up,” replied Rodgers.

“And you’re sure this is the guy?” Bob Feltz shouted into the transistor radio sitting on the dashboard, as he pressed his foot harder onto the accelerator. In the back seat, a steely faced Officer Harrison sat next to FBI Agent Rodgers, who was calmly flicking through a case file on his lap.

“Absolutely sir, I saw him clear as day,” came the reply from the radio. “He was arguing with a group of people outside the bank on Washington Street, saw me walking up and took off running!”

Bob Feltz had a sinking feeling in his stomach as he sped through the lights on Main Street. Two of his colleague’s murderers had already been killed in retaliation, along with several townsfolk who’d been caught up in the fear and anger raging through the town. He desperately wanted at least one man to face justice for his friend’s murder.

He only hoped he’d get there in time.

FIVE AMESBURY RESIDENTS ARRESTED IN LYNCH MOB CASE; EIGHT DEAD

Five Amesbury residents have been taken into custody over the last three days, suspected of involvement in the violence that wracked the town following the murder of Sergeant Martin Bergmann and led to the murders of eight people, including three of his murderers on the run from the law. Between Sunday and Thursday of last week, the town witnessed five suspected lynchings, and those in custody are all being questioned on suspicion of involvement in the extrajudicial killings. It is thought that the killings were in response to the fear of organised crime; but the FBI and local police have issued a statement strongly condemning mob violence against suspected criminals, and are continuing to investigate the organised crime ring suspected of murdering Sergeant Bergmann.
