Monster of the Week 1-Shot

welcome
Monster of the Week 1-shot

What is Monster of the Week?

Monster of the Week is a role-playing game, like Dungeons and Dragons. The two are as similar as playing
World of Warcraft
online and writing an episode of
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
, though.

Whereas DnD has layers upon layers of mechanics so you can optimize your character, explore every detail of combat and exploration, and bring a fantasy world to life, MotW comes from a line of role-playing games where the storytelling is what matters most. Mechanics in MotW are based on story archetypes & tropes, and are always focused on the fiction you’re creating together - one about a modern world with evil, dangerous monsters.

What is a one-shot?

A one-shot means this game will only last for one adventure (as opposed to running indefinitely, or for a longer arc). Your monster-hunting characters will face one mystery. When it’s solved, and the monster defeated (or you’ve completely failed and/or died), we’ll be done.

Is this that game they’re playing on The Adventure Zone right now?

Yes.

What else do I need to know?

As part of this one-shot, I’ve already set up the characters, setting, and monster(s). While I know these parts are fun to create together, I wanted this to be logistically easy to jump into, have a fun ride, and be finish-able.

The characters are young (like MS users), and the setting is small-town Ashdale, Pennsylvania.

While a lot of parts of this one-shot are predetermined, MotW is all about collaborative storytelling. The things you say about your character and the world around them simply become true, as long as they don’t break with the fiction as established so far - though The Keeper (me) does have veto power.

Do I need to know how to play in advance?

No! If you do teach yourself, it will certainly make the game smoother, but I’ll be as helpful as I can be, and can do a pregame walkthrough of the rules if anyone needs it.

How do I sign up?

See the next post.
The game filled with pre-ins, but feel free to post “/replacement” if you’d like to join the list of potential replacements!

guidelines for play1. I’ll be loosely enforcing mafia posting requirements. Please post roughly once every two calendar days, minimum; I’ll be counting weekends as one calendar day. Too many prods and I’ll either replace (or depending, force-hydra) your slot. LMK if you’re going on V/LA and we’ll work something out.

2. For reading clarity and for fun, we’ll be placing all In-Game text in [ area=mycharactername] tags. If you feel like it, you can place Out of Game thoughts in [ spoiler=] tags, but fyi I’ll be using spoilers for ~secrets~ in game as well. You’re welcome to add any other fancy text formatting (like, say, coloring dialogue) you think will make roleplaying fun, as long as things remain clear & legible.

3. Monster of the Week comes from a genre of tabletop RPGs called “Powered by the Apocalypse” games. These games revolve around improvised stories (nothing is set in stone on my end) and collaboration. You’re encouraged to work together to solve the mystery and make a great story. That said, try not to be overbearing in your suggestions to other players – let them play their character and you play yours.

4. “Powered by the Apocalypse” games are also about the
story
. This sort of game is poorly suited to metagaming. Do the thing your character would do, even if the dice seem doomed for failure (which is often just as exciting as success)!

5. Be cool, have fun, & be a creative-writing tryhard occasionally

charactersThere are four slots:

Alexis Brown,
The Flake
- A 22-year-old recent college graduate. A lot of people think she’s crazy for believing in these supernatural monsters, but she knows what she’s seen. After exploring this stuff alone for awhile, she’ll take any allies she can get (even if her brother can be annoying).

Corey Brown,
The Mundane
- A 17-year-old nerdy high school senior. He’s seen some of what his sister Alexis has, and some of what his best friend Gabe has, and he’s really not ready for this. But shucks if he’s not a good brother and friend.

Gabriel “Gabe” Santos-Rivera,
The Spooky
- A 17-year-old goth high school senior. Life for him got a lot weirder when ghosts started appearing to him and talking - not to mention the strange powers he’s started to discover. The ghosts want him to investigate the monsters, and what could be cooler anyway?

Diego Perez,
The Wronged
- A 24-year-old college dropout. It’s only recently that Diego discovered the murder of his mother was likely supernatural - he’s pretty sure it was the work of a werewolf. When he heard his ex-girlfriend Alexis and his cousin Gabe were looking into another strange disappearance, he knew he had to keep them safe.

All names and genders are suggestions; players can change them for the sake of fun or comfort playing.

tutorialSoundtrack: Moonlight by Grace VanderWaal

June, 1983.

Lights are bright. A crowd finds their seats and talks with their friends, family. This is a small town; nearly everyone just happens to be sitting near someone they know, didn’t expect to see here, what a delight oh hi wow how are you I can’t wait to see the show I hear it’s amazing oh I know this director’s great at what he does, and the LEAD, her voice…

You apply the last bit of powder to your face. It’s almost time to take the stage. This is opening night, and you’ve been preparing for months. You’ve made room in your soul every day for weeks for someone else to take shape – to let a character come to life inside you. You’re experienced, and accomplished, and nervous as can be.

Spoiler: Hunter Agenda
When you’re playing your monster hunter:
-Act like you’re the hero in this story (because you are)
-Make your own destiny (go “off script”)
-Find the damn monsters and stop them (before they kill and/or destroy too much)
-Play your hunter like they’re a real person (who happens to be a dangerous and talented badass)

You need to work out what’s behind each situation. Then work out how to find it and what its weaknesses are. Then kill it.

You think about the past months of preparing. Auditioning for the show (they said they HAD to give you the part, you’ve got such Charm!); learning the lines more quickly than the rest (you’re pretty Sharp), and struggling with this heavy costume (you’re not the most Tough, but what actress is?). The work has all been worth it to get to this point.

Spoiler: Tutorial Stats
Tough: -1 (bad)
-A measure of your strength and meanness in a fight
Cool: 0 (average)
-A measure of how calm and collected you are
Weird: +1 (good)
-A measure of how attuned to the supernatural you are
Sharp: +2 (really good)
-A measure of how observant you are
Charm: +3 (phenomenal)
-A measure of how pleasant and persuasive you are

Nervous, yes. You know what would calm your nerves, though. If you could just communicate with your husband before the show. You write a note on a small piece of paper, and call to Miguel, the nearby stagehand. He turns, looking a bit distracted.

“Miguel, could you help me with something?” You ask.
“Um, is it important? Before the show starts I need to f-”
You cut him off. “Yes, Miguel, very important. Please deliver this note to the man in the white suit in the first row of the balcony, and if he has a message, return to me.”
He stands there frozen, unsure if he should follow your directions.

Spoiler: Your first roll
Whenever your character does one of the
moves
in the fiction, you must roll the dice. You always roll 2d6 and add the relevant modifier. Rolling a 6 or lower is a “miss”, and Your Keeper will take the fiction in a direction you don’t want it to go. Rolling a 7-9 is a “mixed success”, meaning you’ll get some of what you want but not all of it, or you’ll get all of what you want but with negative repercussions. Rolling a 10 or higher gets you exactly what you were aiming for, and sometimes with a bonus.

In this case, your tutorial character is trying to
Manipulate someone
. Whenever you want to manipulate someone (even a fellow PC), your character must give that character a reason to do what you ask. Then, Roll +Charm.

First player to read this, go ahead and think of a reason to give Miguel (you can make up basically anything) and make the roll with
Original Roll String: 2d6+3
2 6-Sided Dice: (1, 3)+3 = 7

tutorial pt. 2
Miguel stares at you, then laughs.

“You’ve got your role and accent down pat, huh? Alright, I get it. If I want a good show, I gotta give your show notes to the director.” He takes the paper from your hand.
You catch his eye and smile. “You’re a quick learner, Miguel. You might be my favorite new stagehand.”
Hi chuckles as he walks away. “I’m the only new stagehand!”

Spoiler: The nature of collaboration
I know I sort of took your direction and u-turn’d it back onto my own railroad tracks. Normally, I wouldn’t railroad so intensely - in fact, I’ll love when you improvise some new things (within reason... this one was a *little* intense). But this is a railroad-y pre-planned tutorial. Sorry! :P

You smirk and turn to double check your makeup in the mirror. As you do, the lights dim, and you hear the pre-show announcements begin. Shoot! Not now, it’s too soon. You try to peak out from behind the curtain to see if your husband, the director, got your note. But it’s too dark. You wait another few moments, but alas, the show must go on.

The first song starts. A spotlight shines on the stage just before you. You step into it.

Spoiler: Your second roll
Roll +Cool to
Act Under Pressure
. Next player to read this, roll the dice (2d6+0)!

As a reminder, every time you
do something in fiction that corresponds to a
Move
, you must
roll dice for the
Move
. Similarly, when you
want the mechanical benefits of doing a
Move
, you must
write out what that looks like in-fiction
.

tutorial pt. 3
Spoiler: Roll Results
”On a miss, things go to hell.”

Whenever you roll a
Miss
(a 6 or less), you mark experience. Every five experience points, you level up. I love this method of leveling up; people learn from failure more than from success!

The first song is going fine. Not great, not bad, just fine. It’s not until the end of the first song, as the stage lights start to dim, that you realize the spotlight has not moved. You wonder if your husband has noticed, but when you look to the balcony, he isn’t there. That’s strange, he said he wouldn’t move from his seat. You’re holding a high note, but your voice falters.

Suddenly, the lights above you go completely black. You and Sasha, your counterpart and co-lead in the show, are standing in the spotlight when you hear a loud *SNAP*. The crowd, unsure if this is part of the show, has a few murmurs but is mostly awestruck at the show. You look up.

Spoiler: Rolling for information
Roll +Sharp to
Read a Bad Situation
. Next player to read this, roll the dice (2d6+2)!

The results for this Move include gaining
Hold
.
Hold
are like a mini point buy system. When a Move tells you to take some # of
Hold
points, it also explains how you can spend those points: in this case, the number of
Hold
you get to keep will correspond to the number of questions you, the player, can ask me, Your Keeper, about the situation your character is in.
Hold
do not transfer from one Move to another, and usually they do not even transfer from one scene to another.

tutorial pt. 4
Spoiler: Roll Results
”On a 7-9, Hold one.
One hold can be spent to ask the Keeper one of the following questions:
• What's my best way in?
• What's my best way out?
• Are there any dangers we haven't noticed?
• What's the biggest threat?
• What's most vulnerable to me?
• What's the best way to protect the victims?“

Whenever you roll for information using the
Read a bad situation
or
Investigate a mystery
Moves, as long as you roll at least a 7 I’ll give you some of the most obvious information by default. Then you’ll be able to ask questions from the associated list (see above).

As a reminder, all Basic Moves and their potential results are on the Hunter Reference Sheets

Anove you it’s very dark, and you have an even harder time seeing because of the spotlight shining on you. You manage to see a white suit - your husband! It sounds like he’s talking to someone. ...Miguel, you think? Maybe if you stepped out of the spotlight you’d be able to see better.

Spoiler: Back to you
I should have included the question list in the previous post. Go ahead and use your 1 hold to ask any question from the list in the first spoiler! :]

Is the way I’m going about this making sense so far? I’m hoping you’ll understand stats, Moves, rolls, experience & leveling up, and Luck (which I haven’t yet explained) by the time we’re done. We’re almost done with the tutorial - if we get to the end and you don’t understand one of these, let me know!

tutorial pt. 5
Spoiler:
In post 25, skitter30 wrote:What's the biggest threat?

As Sasha moves into her solo - she seems not to have noticed anything above you - you step away from her and out of the spotlight, to let your eyes adjust to the darkness.

You can now see the two men above you clearly, struggling to hold onto a lighting rig that is no longer attached to the ceiling. Before you have time to process how grateful you are that they saved your life, you notice the next lighting rig over, the one above Sasha, is also loose.

As you realize this, you notice the music is swelling toward your solo. As strange as it sounds now, you think back to multiple occasions where your singing voice had caused seemingly miraculous things to happen. You have a decision to make: save Sasha or sing.

Spoiler: A choice
Usually I won’t make your choices so binary, but I wanted y’all to have one more roll and I thought I’d let you pick which roll you’ll make. You can:
Roll +Tough to Protect Someone
or
Roll +Weird to Use Magic
(your singing voice)

tutorial finale
Spoiler: roll results
Like with rolling for information, rolling to Do Magic requires you to pick the results of your attempt to magic from a list. On a 7-9, you’re also required to pick a glitch, which the Keeper interprets into the story. For the sake of wrapping up this tutorial, I’ll be picking these for you.

Magic effect: “Do one thing that is beyond human limitations.”
Glitch: “It has a problematic side effect.”

The music shifts mood, and changes keys, and your duet with Sasha begins. You sing your heart out. It’s better than you’ve ever sung: beautiful, unnatural.

You step toward the spotlight, the old wooden stage creaking just a bit beneath your nude ballet flats. You take another step toward Sasha, and toward the lights, your attention always on everything above you, even as you try to put on a good show.

You take another step, but this time your foot doesn’t touch wood. You try to take another step, but you realize neither of your feet are touching the ground. You’re floating upwards, over Sasha’s head. The air around you is lifting you higher, as your voice continues with a strength it has never known. The song lifts you to the lights just in time – you catch the broken lights just before they fall on Sasha. Your husband and Miguel look stunned to see you next to them, though they quickly come to help you.

The three of you bring the lights backstage as Sasha finishes the song without you. It settles in that your voice just saved Sasha’s life. Miguel has the same thought, obviously, as he turns to you to ask how you did it.

You open your mouth to respond, but no sound comes out. Try as you might, you can’t seem to make any sound, and somehow you know: your voice… it’s just gone.

A few minutes later, your husband moves onto the stage to cancel the show, while you silently weep backstage.

Spoiler: A few more rules
There’s only a couple things I didn’t get to in this tutorial. Those are:

Harm:
Harm is your (or your enemies’) health bar, basically. You can take up to three harm before you become “unstable”, at which point you start taking harm over time. If you ever have 7 harm, you die. You can try to stabilize each other when unstable, or work to heal harm, but only if it makes sense in the fiction – enemies won’t stop attacking because you want to “take a turn healing”. Whenever you rest for a little while, you heal one harm. Whenever you rest for more than a day, you reset to 0 harm.

Protip: Monsters are dangerous. If you face them alone & without a plan, you will probably die.

Luck:
In this one-shot, you’ll have two points of luck to spend (it’s extremely rare that you would ever gain a point of luck, so these are limited). You can spend a Luck to either:
-Reduce the harm you just took to 0
-Retroactively change the roll you just rolled to a 12
If you ever run out of luck, Your Keeper will remove all kid gloves when it comes to your character.

Weapons and Tags:
Your weapons have tags. Some tags like “loud” or “messy” describe what happens if you use it. Others like “intimate” or “far” describe their range of use. Others like “1-harm magic” or “2-harm ignore armour” describe how much harm they cause, and what kind. These should be straightforward, but feel free to ask about them, or ask for a full list of them.

@Brass, be sure to check out your character sheet in .

Soundtrack: Crazy by Gnarls Barkley

Dear Alec,

You’re not crazy. Forget what your parents say, forget what the college therapist said, you’re not making this up. Dangerous monsters exist; they’re real and coming for Ashdale, and if no one else believes, then you’ll have to stop them yourself.

It started when you were on that camping trip with your family last year. You saw something unnatural, you know you did. Your parents didn’t believe you, your friends laughed it off when you brought up, and the cops told you to stop wasting their time (you heard one jerk detective mutter something about “that unstable male” as you walked out the door - ughh, you hate when people use “male” like a noun).

Knowing no one would believe you, you decided to search for this unnatural thing yourself. Of course, you didn’t want to go unprepared. How did you get ready for this dangerous solo adventure, again? Choose one:

-You worked out and practiced using throwing knives to defend yourself:
+1 Tough & gain Throwing Knives
(1-harm close many)
-You studied up on the strange creatures you might find and practiced a unique way to kill them - beheading:
+1 Weird & gain guitar-string Garrote (3-harm intimate)

You finally went back to the woods last month, and you found what you were looking for. A werewolf!

Roll +Weird
to see how your first encounter with the supernatural went.

On a 7-9, pick 1 of the following to be true. On a 10+, both:
-The werewolf was friendly
-You learned something important about where the supernatural creatures come from

On a miss, still pick one, but something evil was watching you…

Only three people believe you: Your younger brother Corey (he saw it too, on that camping trip), his weird goth friend Gabbie (whose house might be haunted? or something), and your ex-boyfriend Diego (it’s… complicated, you’ll have to ask him).

Now Corey and Gabbie are telling you about this missing person from the Sundown Theatre, and they want you to drive them to Pins-Up Bar and Bowling Alley to ask around about it. On the one hand, you don’t want even more people thinking you’re crazy. You also don’t want to endanger your brother. But on the other hand, Corey’s practically an adult. And for once, it’s nice to be believed…

As your car pulls into the Pins-Up lot, you see none other than Diego Perez parking his motorcycle. When he heard you three were looking into this, he insisted on joining. You didn’t know how to say no, given what he’s been through. Hopefully this won’t be too awkward. After all, you can’t get distracted; lives are at stake.

Sincerely,
Your Keeper

Your venture into the woods alone was perhaps misguided, you thought, after the sun had started to set and you had almost gotten lost among the pines twice. But that was when he suddenly appeared - the werewolf. You didn’t know he was a werewolf at first, but there was certainly something unusual about him from the start.

He introduced himself: “Samuel Hayes.” Out of the corner of your eye, you thought you saw fangs, but when you looked directly at his teeth, they were normal. Everything about him seemed wild, dangerous, but never the thing you were looking directly at. Uncanny.

He asked what brought you this deep into the woods, and you got to talking. You explained your story, your suspicions, your curiosity. He was in turn surprisingly open, and talked quickly. He straight out told you he was a werewolf. He used to be normal guy from Centralia, Pennsylvania, a nearby town. But everything changed after the Centralia Mine Fire. He was no longer fully human. He turned into a wolf every full moon, and he was learning to do it at will.

You marveled at his honesty, and at the strangeness of his story. You had so many questions, but before you could speak, he pointed behind you. You turned to look, and saw the full moon peeking over the horizon. You turned back, and all you saw was a gray tail disappearing behind a tree. He was gone.

You’re. So. Not. Crazy.
Right?

Soundtrack: Maybe IDK by Jon Bellion

Dear Corey,

Senior year is weird. You thought it would be cool being among the oldest in school, but apparently cool kids stay cool and nerds like you still don’t rule the school or whatever. Not that that’s the most important thing right now, since uh, your best friend Gabbie can maybe do magic or something??

You and Gabbie are unlikely friends. You’re among the top of the class, she doesn’t do homework ever; you’re a goody-two-shoes, she follows rules when she feels like it; even the way you two dress has nothing in common (does she own anything other than black?). But you’re both smart, and have the same sense of dry humor, and you’ve been best friends ever since your mutual friend Sam didn’t come back after freshman year, and you were the only two who missed him.

What’s something else you’ve bonded over?
Choose one:

-You’ve shared all the same bullies:
-1 Tough & gain the Move “Always the Victim”

Spoiler: Always the Victim
When
another hunter uses Protect Someone to protect you
, they mark experience. Whenever
a monster captures you
, you mark experience.

-You’re both clumsy and bad at sports:
-1 Cool & gain the Move “Oops!”

Spoiler: Oops!
If
you want to stumble across something important,
tell the Keeper. You will find something important and useful, although not necessarily related to your immediate problems.[/b]
(for either choice, these changes only apply to you, not to Gabbie)

You told Gabbie about the creepy thing you saw in the woods, and of course she believed you (she’s a good friend). But it’s only recently that
she’s
been telling
you
a much weirder story.

When she first said her house was haunted, you made plans to stay over for the weekend. She said she could hear voices as soon as the sun went down. For most of the night, she said she was seeing and hearing things you didn’t experience at all. For awhile, Gabbie sat and chatted with a ghost you could not see. But at one point you had your eyes closed and heard a voice that wasn’t yours or Gabbie’s. At the volume of a whisper, you heard, “Help her”. At that point, you looked up, and Gabbie was hardly breathing. Her eyes were glowing and she looked… almost trapped?

Roll +Cool
to see what you did next:

On a 10+, you helped Gabbie snap out of it - describe how you did it. Also, Gabbie gets a +1 on her Mystery Letter roll.

On a 7-9, same as above, but at a cost to you both (keeper’s choice). Or, you don’t help snap Gabbie out of it, and watch her struggle on her own - up to you.

On a miss, your failed attempts to help Gabbie angers the ghost. Be prepared for present and future backlash.

When Gabbie is back to normal, she says the ghost left, and that she now knows some things about a missing person in town. Something about the Sundown Theatre, and needing to go to Pins-Up. You’re glad to have your friend back to normal (she’s... acting normal, right?), and her house rid of ghosts. And you know your brother will help - he’s super into the freaky stuff going on lately. Hopefully together you’ll be able to face whatever comes.

Sincerely,
Your Keeper

Cool! This is exactly what happens, and Gabbie gets a +1 on her Mystery Letter roll (coming soon).

Soundtrack: Nocturne by Blanco White

Dear Diego,

It’s been 10 months since your mother died. She was the only one left at home after your dad died four years ago, so now you live alone. At first, the grief was overwhelming. Amid your depression, you broke up with your boyfriend Alec.

They say the five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. You’re pretty sure you’ve made it through all five – you’re definitely in a healthier place than you were months ago. They just forgot to mention the sixth step, where you are now: revenge.

You didn’t know your mother had been murdered by a werewolf, not at first. Police said it was an unfortunate hiking accident, and she’d been mauled by a rabid coyote. At the funeral, your mom’s coworkers from the hospital were very sad, and had an annoying amount of pity for you. What you didn’t understand, though, was why you were the only one who was suspicious. Who had ever heard of a coyote accident in Ashdale?

A couple weeks later, you decided to investigate the hiking trail where she died.

Who did you take as your traveling companion?
Choose one:

-Corey. Though you haven’t spent much time with Alec since breaking up, Corey has long felt like your younger brother, too, and he’s up for anything. You told him you just wanted to walk the path in memory of your mom. The two of you chatted endlessly – what did you talk about?
+1 Charm

-Gabbie, your step-cousin (your mom’s sister is her step-mom). Gabbie and Aunt Clara were two of the few people at the funeral who didn’t treat you with kid gloves just because you’re an orphan now. You didn’t explain why you wanted to go, and you mostly walked in silence.
+1 Weird

You stopped when you reached the place your mother was found. That’s when you found the half-paw-half-footprint, the one that changed everything. Suddenly, someone else walked up the trail.
Roll +Charm
to see what happened next:
On a 10+, choose 1. On a 7-9, choose 2. On a miss, all three.

-Your presence here looked suspicious to them
-They’re a person of authority in Ashdale
-They saw the footprint too

When they left, you told your traveling companion about the footprint, and they in turn told you about Alec’s obsession with monsters. As you head home, you texted Alec about it. You agreed something strange was going on in Ashdale. After that, though, you didn’t talk about it much. After some research, though, and another examination of that spot in the woods, you’re certain your mom was killed by a werewolf.

A few months later, Gabbie texts you to meet her, Corey, and Alec at Pins-Up. Something about a ghost and a missing person. It might seem dangerous to take Gabbie, Corey, and Alec searching for these evil beasts, but if they’re going looking anyway, you’d better make sure you’re there to save their asses. You’ll do whatever it takes to stop these abominations from ever hurting anyone you love again.

They’re a person of authority in Ashdale
While you were staring at the strange print in the dirt, trying to wrap your head around it, Jackie Decker, the "Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital" (everyone just calls it the GSA Hospital) Director of Nursing, ran up the path from the opposite direction with her big golden retriever. She was dressed in fashionable athletic gear, and had earbuds in, her long blonde ponytail bobbing behind her as she ran. Jackie was your mom's boss and one of her closest friends.

She started when she saw you, and pulled out one headphone. "Oh, ummm Diego, hi. Heel, Charlie." The dog sits.
"Hi, Dr. Decker," is all you said.
"I've been meaning to stop by or call or... Um, how are you, Diego? And.. Gabriella, is it?"
"We're fine," you said. She clearly felt awkward. You chose to look especially glum.

As she stopped to catch her breath, it seemed to dawn on her all at once where you three were standing, and her expression fell.

"Diego, I didn't get a chance to say before... If you ever need anything, you know you can always come to me and Greg, right? We loved your mom so much, and if there's ever anything we can do... Just, feel free to stop by the hospital sometime, or even just message us online. You know, you're not alone."
"I know," you said.

You stood in awkward silence while both thinking of what to say. Eventually, you settled for "Thanks, Dr. Decker."

She nodded, and slowly put her ear bud back in while looking around sadly. "Come on, Charlie!" And they left.

skitter, be sure to check out your character sheet in

Soundtrack: Leave the Light On by Overcoats

Dear Gabbie,

Life is strange. Like, bizarre.

You’ve never considered yourself into magic, or Wicca, or anything like that. Sometimes people assume you are because you like to wear all black and keep to yourself, but you’ve never had interest in anything like this: this weird set of, um… superpowers? that you’ve started to develop.

It started a little less than a year ago. The first time it happened, it was with your gym teacher. You hate going to gym class, and one morning you were dreading the idea of whatever physical activity you’d have to do that day. That dread started to sort of… solidify.

What happened next?
Choose one:

-You implanted a thought in your gym teacher’s brain – “We should take today off and relax” – and you knew you had done it because he said those very words out loud:
+1 Charm, -1 Tough, and gain the Move Telepathy.

Spoiler: Telepathy
You can read people’s thoughts and put words in their mind. This can allow you to
investigate a mystery or read a bad situation
without needing to actually talk. You can also
manipulate someone
without speaking. You still roll moves as normal, except people will not expect the weirdness of your mental communication.

-Your gym teacher didn’t come to class that day… Apparently he’d gotten a terrible cold and gone home. You’d been saying “please get sick and go home” to yourself all day:
+1 Tough, -1 Charm and gain the move Hex.

Spoiler: Hex
Hex: When you cast a spell (with
Use Magic
), as well as the usual list of magic effects, you may pick from the following:
-The target contracts a disease.
-The target immediately suffers harm (
2-harm magic ignore-armour
).
-The target breaks something precious or important.

As you’ve learned to control your powers, you’ve discovered you can do lots of things outside the realm of normal possibility. All it takes is some focus – and repeating what you want to happen out loud helps a lot. The mood swings, paranoia, and hallucinations that come with it are, uh, more than worth it, right?

Meanwhile, the other strange thing going on is that your house has a ghost! You’ve lived in your house awhile, and the ghost is new… or maybe the ghost has been there awhile and your ability to see it is new, you’re not sure. You decide to invite Corey over to show him.

The two of you sat down in your room, and the next thing you know, you’re talking to the ghost! She seems to have a lot to say about something dangerous coming for Ashdale. She says that the theatre director went missing during a recent show at the Sundown Theatre, and that there’s an evil monster behind it. She doesn’t know everything about it, but she’s so relieved to be able to talk to someone living about it, because she doesn’t want Ashdale to remain unaware of this danger.

Roll +Sharp (for you, this is a +0, but remember to use the +1 that Corey earned for you!) to find out what you asked her. On a 10+ hold 2. On a 7-9, hold one. On a miss, hold one, but your
Dark Side
will come into play. Spend your hold to choose from these questions for the Keeper:
-What exactly happened at the theatre?
-What sort of creature is it?
-What can the creature do?
-Where did the creature go?
-Where’s the missing person?
-Are there any other dangers I need to know about?

She also tells you that Figgy, a bartender at the Pins Up Bar and Bowling Alley, will know more.

After talking to the ghost, things go a bit foggy. You wake up horizontal in bed, with Corey seated across the room telling stories. You get up quickly and tell him you need to get moving – you’ll tell him about it on the way! You ask him to text Alec to drive you both to Pins Up. Meanwhile, you text Diego to meet you both there. He’s going to want to know about this – you just spoke to his dead mom!

rolling a 6-
You gain one experience ♠!
What sort of creature is it?You ask your Aunt Pamela what kind of creature you should be looking for.

"Well, I was actually at the theatre the other night when the director went missing. The police searched the building, but didn't find anything inside. But they forgot to search the roof. When I went up there, I saw a pile of dead scales - the kind that fall off snakes, only this snake must have been huge! Or else there's more than one? It was hard to figure out without being able to touch anything. You know, being a ghost..."

your dark side comes into playOn your way to Pins Up, you start wondering about that foggy period after you spoke to Diego's dead mom, and what Corey was doing that whole time. He said he just barely heard a voice to "help you", but didn't see any ghost... That seems weird, since the only ghost you saw in the room was just the one. He's been real weird about this whole ghost thing, come to think of it.
Accuse Corey of hiding something from you
while you're at Pins Up or else
lose access to your powers until you do.

Spoiler: ooc
I added the experience point and telepathy move to your character sheet

The four of you are standing outside of Pins-Up Bowling Alley and Bar. It's a Saturday night, so the parking lot is full and you're sure the bar is too. The sun has been gone for a couple hours, and star- and moonlight give a haunting glow over Ashdale.

Gabbie stiffens. On some basic, fundamental level, she doesn't want to talk about all the weird things that have been happening to and around her. It would almost be an admission, a confession that forces beyond her ken and control have chosen to grant her power, but have also inextricably tied her to the uncanny and unnatural. Almost as if by acknowledging the occult she'll subsume herself within it.

She's scared. She doesn't understand the metaphysical capabilities she's manifesting, isn't sure whether she'd prefer to acknowledge her new ability to perform supernatural feats or to pretend to herself that she can't. She had decided to show the ghost to Corey - if someone else could see it too it would at least validate her experiences and confirm that she isn't subject to some merciless and unrelenting delusion.

But he wasn't able to see it.

Her voice is tremulous, shaky.
"I think you're hiding something from me!"
she accuses Corey. It's almost easier to believe that the ghost was some sort of cruel prank he'd pulled on her than to believe it was
real
, than to be forced to accept that the supernatural exists and that she is of it.

i, uh, decided to roleplay an existential crisis apparently
I love this!
Also as a sidenote I'll probably just be watching and prodding until one of you uses a Move, goes somewhere new, or interacts with a NPC (though if you decide to only do character dialogue for IRL weeks then I might have a NPC interrupt :P )
But I already love the ways your bringing your characters to life!

I also encourage you to say "We as a group do ____" and if anyone wishes their character didn't participate in that ____, we can fix it retroactively (rather than always waiting to get on the same page). For instance, here, I'm going to now assume y'all are inside Pins-Up, since Diego got drinks and Gabbie wants to talk to Figgy. Don't let waiting for each other to play slow you down! Do what your characters would do.

The theater? Oh yeah oh my gosh the theater - oh one second." The half dozen dangly earrings hanging from Figgy's left ear jingle as she runs to help another customer for a minute.
She returns.
"Yeah so weird and sad! You know director Carl Wagner? He's been directing for years and his shows are always so amazing oh my god they're my favorite and oh, right, so he went missing in the middle of a rehearsal the other night and no one knows where he is. I know, weird right? Anyway that couple's lives have always been tragic ever since she lost her voice during a show all those years ago... it's crazy that he's gone. Are you guys sticking around? Your read of the "Investigate a Mystery" isn't quite right; you only get that extra question if you have "Advanced" the Move, which is something you can do when leveling up. Since you haven't done that yet, you'll get just the two questions. For future reference, you can always ask just one question at a time, if you expect one answer to affect what you'll ask next. But in this case I'm gonna roll with it and answer both.

what happened? Where did it go?When Figgy gets back from helping a customer, Diego steps forward.

"Hello, we are looking into it, clearly the superior choice is us four rather than the police. Could you help us?" Diego asks.

Figgy laughs and picks up a couple clean glasses to dry them with a towel. "Sure, I mean I know what it's like to be curious about what's going on in this town. And I know what you mean about the cops - you should see them here after hours the one cop whose name I can never remember always does shots to start and..." Figgy trails off while glancing down the bar at someone. "Oh right um, anyway, what exactly were you trying to find out?"

"Well for starters," Diego says while leaning over the bar, "What happened, exactly?"

She sighs. "Honestly? I don't know what to think happened. But I've heard a lot. Some of this year's cast - they're doing
Godspell
, I think? like to come bowling together on Wednesday nights and I overheard them talking yesterday." Figgy sets down the glass and towel she's holding and moves some of her hair away from the many earrings in her left ear. She looks each of you in the eye.
"You guys know I'm just passing on what I've heard, right? You won't judge me for how weird this sounds?"

You all look at each other and nod.

"Well apparently his mute wife thinks he's dead." Figgy's face becomes very serious, and she lowers her voice. "Mrs. Wagner said - er, wrote, I guess, that she heard some bizarre sounds the night it happened. Some hissing, something like a squishy sound or something... And she just feels in her bones that he's gone. She didn't see anything specific, though, I don't think, and she can't really re-create what she heard very well, for obvious reasons. But I dunno that's just what the cast was talking about who knows if it's true or exaggerated. I hope he's still alive."

Diego nods slowly, then asks, "We actually heard there was maybe an animal involved? Like a snake or something? Is that weird?"

Figgy chuckles, then starts mixing a drink that includes rum and orange juice. "Wouldn't be the first time I heard that idea being floated around though who knows maybe it's not weird speculation there's gotta be a reason we're all fucking naturally terrified of snakes am I right? like they're clearly terrible and dangerous. Got that idea from the hissing, right? Well nobody saw any animal or snake tracks or anything in the area around the theater, or at least that's what I'd tell you if I ever listened to the drunk cops talk which I totally don't." Figgy winks, and takes a sip from the glass in her hand.
"Can I get you guys something to drink, by the way?"

Aaaaand we're back! Hopefully you're all still interested in this little RPG.

I'm thinking I want to change the expectations for this game a bit: I'm going to post an update three times a week: M/W/F. Whoever posts in between can "move" all the characters, if they're together, or just do something specific to your character. You can always cover for each other, or choose to do nothing for a couple updates. But if nobody posts between two of my updates... well let's just say you usually don't want that to happen ;) :P

Hopefully this can keep the story moving and also relieve some of the pressure of each of you having to post every time!

I also notice brass seems to have siteflaked but I'll give him a week or so to notice this is back on before I look for a rep.
