“Resign?!” Bob Feltz was apoplectic with rage. “We’ve had seven murders in the last week! How could you resign on us?”
“I’ve already said, I’ll stay until the end of the investigation, but not a day more,” Sergeant Harrison replied. “I wouldn’t leave you short-staffed like that. But I’m also not staying.”
Bob fell back into the break room chair.
“Why Carl? I know this is… challenging but you’ve spent four years building your career here and you’re a good officer. And do you really think Martin would’ve wanted you leaving the force so soon after his death?”
“But that’s the point,” Carl sighed, “We don’t know what Martin would’ve wanted. Because he’s dead. At the hands of, among others, one of our colleagues!”
“I joined the police because I wanted to give something back,” Carl continued. “But what good can I do when criminal gangs, the mafia and who knows else can join the cops? If I can’t trust the police, am I not just in another gang, but with a uniform and a pension?”
“Now that’s unfair Carl,” Bob rebuked him. “We all joined up to make our country a safer place, did we not?”
But, having already seen the young man shot in the head in town that night, even Bob was starting to doubt that he could do that.
