Discovered the series through the TV adaptation (which is excellent, and should be running away with the Emmys this year), and have now got into the books due to not being able to wait a whole year for season two (I am aware I will have to wait much longer for books six and seven, though). Just finished A Clash of Kings and will get my hands on a copy of A Storm of Swords soon.

Love it.

Yeah, obviously it loses something, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not going to hurt you. Pretend Robin is a nickname for Robert if it helps.

Hot DAMN that was good. Saw someone somewhere say that the jarring nature of the song choice was intended to prolong the "WTF"ness of the final scene and I'm on board with that.

Spoiler:
The only thing that I wasn't completely sold on was the extended Pod stuff (although the Meereenese Knot joke went a long way to making up for that).

I started reading the books after eight episodes of season 1 and picked up from where I was in the show because I just couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I didn't have any trouble at the time but it was interesting going back after getting fully caught up on all the books and realising the bits I'd missed before.

Sheeeeeeeeit. Didn't expect to like the Littlefinger monologue/montage but the shock of Ros's fate floored me even though it should have been obvious in retrospect and Sophie Turner broke my heart. I like that they're willing to try new things on this show as well (monologue montage this week, punk song over the credits in ep 3...).

Tyrion's "this is awkward" was superb, as well. The whole episode grew on me a lot as it went on.

I enjoyed that although I was a little thrown when there was no spoilery scene after the last one. Great to see Patrick Malahide back as Balon!

Liam Cunningham alone is reason to love this show.

In post 2274, Iecerint wrote:She might have a little bit of familial loyalty to Theon, but I don't think she has enough of it to justify endangering her best men like that.

I would have bought it more if her speech had been about showing their enemies that it was unwise to mess with their family rather than about wanting to save her little brother.
I thought she was reacting directly to Balon's disregard for Theon; realising that if she'd been born male it could just as easily have been her being cast aside like that. That coupled with the affection she already had for Theon tipped her over the edge. How it played to me, anyway.

I think that would be very hard to pull off with the right tone in this medium. I'm kinda glad it didn't go that way here, although I am frustrated about the lack of Tysha talk.

I haven't decided yet whether I'll watch season 5 when it happens next season. We're reaching a point where there are bound to be more 'future book' spoilers next year and, with some of my frustrations in their adaptational choices growing this season, I increasingly suspect that I'm going to want to double down and make sure I get everything from GRRM first. I don't think it's been a poor season at all and I've enjoyed a lot of it but it's been distracting more than before.

Well, now I wish I'd stuck to my plan not to watch this season. All of Sansa's growing agency completely undercut to make her rape a narrative device to serve the character development of a man. Sophie Turner's performance deserves a hell of a lot better than that.

One of the AV Club reviewers put it well in that, while they could still reveal something or other in episode 10 to carry on the story, it's a testament to how insubstantial and uninteresting all the Dorne material this season has been that you could absolutely believe that the scenes in this episode wrapped up the entire country's storyline with naught but a few slaps on the wrist and Trystane + Myrcella going to King's Landing. There's absolutely no 'aw man, wonder what this character's going to do next'. No forward momentum or meaningful conflict. Just a bunch of pretty sets soon to be forgotten.

brb gonna go watch some Deep Space Nine and mutter about what could have been

I liked a lot of this episode but they had to stick a poisoned knife into the already festering wound that is the adaptation of Dorne

It's very possibly Dany, if I remember correctly. There's some Targaryen blood a few generations back in the Baratheon line.

The opening sequence of this episode was a million times better than 99% of the last three seasons put together.

Also it would appear that Varys has, at last, one-upped Littlefinger in the teleportation stakes.

Was listening to the soundtrack over and over again today. Just masterful work.

This ended up being a weird and bumpy season but this episode was definitely a real high point for the series, particularly the King's Landing stuff. I've ragged on the show's adaptation of the Jaime/Cersei relationship for a couple of years (they're probably my favourite two book characters) but there's something to be said for having the weakening point be now, when she goes full Mad Queen, than earlier, that makes me open to reconsidering it somewhat. Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau totally knocked all of their scenes out of the park, as well.

Saw somebody suggest that
Melisandre might find him and Victarion him up a smoking arm but that does seem like wishful thinking. I think I prefer his story as just ending ambiguously now, even though greyscale seems like it's kind of a thing in the books

This show used to be good.

Spoiler:
Guess Varys really isn't a merman. :(
