LSG Queue - Summer 2019 Update

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Jun 04, 2019 2:43 pm

Post by xRECKONERx »

Hi everyone!

Your three LSG mods are here. Sorry for the radio silence -- we've been working behind the scenes to try and get things ready for you guys.

First thing's first...
What's coming up next?

Well, we're glad you asked. In the next couple of weeks,
Survivor: Red, Purple, and Green
will be going into signups! This game is moderated by
zoraster
and
PrivateI
, with
xRECKONERx
as the listmod in charge. Zoraster has been working on a Survivor game that is actually procedurally generated and dabbles with an interesting stat-based challenge scheme. He'll be sharing more details on it very soon, so keep an eye out, because it's gonna be lit, fam.

After Survivor: RPG gets going, we have a huge event in the middle of the Summer... Haschel Cedricson's
Survivormeet III
! Due to the presence of players at the meet in real life, we're aiming to have Survivor: RPG wrap up before the meet, and then we'll hold off on launching anything new until after the meet has concluded.

Following that, with a targeted start date of August 16th,
Disney's World Domination
will be hitting the queue! This game will be moderated by
CuddlyCaucasian
,
Cephrir
, and
Save the Dragons
with
xRECKONERx
as the listmod in charge. This is not a Survivor game, but is instead a new large social gametype made completely original by the mods of the game. More will be revealed as we get closer to launch.

After that? Well, we have plenty of games in development. We're waiting to see which ones get further along first, but from what we've seen, there's a lot to be excited for as we close out 2019! Now, another important update..

What's the deal with finding a new forum host?

Righto. We all know Zetaboards going down was a bit of a blow to the community. Several mods have dabbled in other potential board formats, with most of them being
adequate
but not ideal. After getting feedback from the Equestria mods on how their forum functioned, and learning how Haschel was able to work with Kison to come up with a hosting solution, the LSG listmods went to Kison and asked for a longer-term solution. And so...
we're gonna have boards again
!

The LSG listmods are hard at work setting up a board template using the Simple Machines forum software. The best part of this is that after we're done setting it up, Kison is cloning about a dozen installations of the board on the MafiaScum servers, and then handing out the admin names/passwords to me, xof, and CC. This means that when your game is ready to officially have a Listmod in Charge assigned, they'll come with the keys to a shiny new forum that has 90% of the arduous setup stuff already done for you!

This should greatly increase the ease with which new mods can set up their board and run their first game, and it lets us standardize guides and processes for this software. Once we start to run low on keys, Kison will clone a few more instances of the boards, but we think that first dozen or so will set us up for at least a couple of years. HUGE thanks to Kison for working with the listmods on figuring out a solution that makes sense.

That's great! What else!?

That's all we have for now. We really appreciate the community busting out some fixes for the forum disaster. Right now, both Survivor RPG & Disney's World Domination are set to run using Freeforums/Proboards. The next game to run after that will be able to use the new forum installations -- so let that be a wink wink nudge nudge to be first to the queue with your new game!

Thanks all. Much love.

Honestly though, thanks Equestria mods for giving this whole thing a test run and finding the quirks in the system. We wouldn't have had an alternative to Proboards without you. <3

If people want to use Proboards they can keep doing so, this is just an option if you'd like it.

i have just finished setting up a great deal of the Survivor: RPG stuff on proboards and I cannot tell you how excited I am for the other forums to be widely available. Many thanks to Kison, Haschel and the listmods for getting this done.

Wow. I have no idea what this OP was about. :(

I think LSG means "large social gametype." I found that in the text. What is that?
Are we moving forums?
What is a survivor game?
What is a listmod? Is that like The Worst who I think manages the replacement list?
There was a forum disaster? OMG, what happened?

Is mafiascum.net switching hosts and forum software?

Edited to add: Oh wow. I picked this post up out of context in the list of active topics. This is from a whole sub-forum I've never explored before.

So one subforum is leaving mafiascum.net?
The Oxford comma is only technically optional.

Nah, if anything the bulk of activity created by a subforum is coming BACK to mafiascum.net.

Large Social Games such as survivor were traditionally run off site for two main reasons: first, most were anonymous, and it's a pain to keep anonymity on MS (people accidentally post on the wrong account, mods know who people are regardless of new alts, etc.). Second, these forums required a ton of hands-on activity from the game mods that MS wasn't really set up to provide. An average survivor game might have 30-40 subforums, a visual theme element, etc.

This announcement is about finding a way to bring those games into our ecosystem while still giving mods and players the ability to achieve the two things above.
