when i said no coaching i was more referring to like in the middle of matches/once the tourney starts and teams are known

a little friendly team building for people new to it wouldn't hurt imo

am i allowed to /in with a meme team of my own?

OkRC: Skygazer, you're so great at Pokemon and I'm so bad, can you help me build a team?
Skyg: Sure!

Not OkWgeurts: Ok so now you should switch into Magikarp here

Not OKSkygazer: Hey RC, the worst is running a stall grass team so you should put in some stall breakers and wall breakers in your team

Maybe we could have experience brackets like, none, semi and pro.

If you did in, you arent the only newbie, more experinced people are willing to help you if you wish.

Let's do 2 brackets

Serious bracket and meme bracket

And you can join both if you want? Idk
2019 stats: Town WR 76.7%, overall WR 81.667%, 1 scum defeat involving a major mod error in lylo vs 8 scum wins.

Seems like it'd make more sense for serious and meme to just be separate tourneys, if you're making a distinction, as I doubt even the best meme team beats a serious team any respectable amount of the time.

With 17 people you have an awkward number for bracketing. I'd suggest random/callout/experience based R1 and tiebreaker based further round pairing. For example, you could Tiebreakers be -> MW -> # Pokemans KO'd -> # Pokemans Unused -> # Surviving Pokemans -> Remaining % of HPs and play until one player has an undisputed MW.

That way, in R1 you get people playing against whoever, but in round two say wogurts crushes RC's meme team with only one Pokeman, RC doesn't end up paired with the winner of the super close battle between the worst and pine where they bitterly fought for supremacy in a pitched back and forth battle. It should correct towards balanced matches more and more as the tourney goes on.

Not forcing a bracket also means you don't need to aim for specific numbers as well, people can keep playing until they no longer want to play, and you get more overall Pokemans going on.

I'm happy to lend my expertise building a pairing Al Gore Rhythm if you guys want.

Pokemon unused is a pretty meaningless stat though

Shouldn't be judging anything besides win and loss

I disagree? Like, I doubt it'll come up often (If at all) but if a person manages to wipe a team with 1 pokemon, presumably they've got a scary team.

Similarly, if a person never manages to KO a pokemon, they should be better matched against others who only KO'd 1 or 2, as opposed to the guy who had someone on their last HP on their last pokemon.

Most of the time, the breakers aren't going to change much and the event is decided solely by W/L, but it should hopefully mean more exciting/fair/fun games for everyone.

If there's better stats that are more representative I have no problem editing that, btw. I just guessed based on what I remember of pokemon.

Sample Results for fictitious R1. Round 2 would be HvF, AvC, BvD, EvG, based on the Pairing numbers.

R1 Opponent W/L KO'd Survived Pairing Numbers
A B 1 6 3 10603
B A 0 3 0 300
C D 1 6 1 10601
D C 0 5 0 500
E F 0 1 0 100
F E 1 6 5 10605
G H 0 0 0 0
H G 1 6 6 10606

Hard oppose that

Running suicide leads doesn't make your team worse and running the few pokemon that can 6-0 a team (who are generally rather win more and not strong picks) doesn't make your team better.

RC is 100% right here. That will just add extra incentives for hyper offence.

I think we're being too worrisome here, as well. If people want to run meme teams, let them run a meme team, but they'll take a hit at their overall effectiveness, which may not be a bad idea for the more experienced of us.

Also like if you play water into grass you're almost certainly getting like 5-6 to 0d. Maybe you can delete one with sap sipper Whirlpool perish song azumarill or something but I don't think that punishing for magnitude of defeat is a good idea here even if # of Pokemon remaining was a good proxy for magnitude of defeat

+1

i think having seperate tiers or seperate brackets would just overly complicate things? plus with the double elimination bracket everyone is guaranteed at least two games anyways! im also sure that there are a bunch of people that would want to play fun exhibition matches that we could potentially setup and look at in the tourney's downtime!

also, I'm /inning myself :shifty:

But like

I don't want to play a tryhard team vs newbies and I don't want to play a not tryhard team vs... certain people
