What is Clear Crystal?

Its a Crystal Rom Hack. Its Crystal, except its Open World.
What does this mean?
This means that
- At the start of the game, I can go anywhere I want. Yep, literally anywhere.
- I can do any gym in any order I want. So I can take on the easier gyms early, or try to deal with the threatening gyms early so they don't become super powerful later on.
- I can catch all of the mons I want to use.
- Story isn't really an important thing and I think its non-existant.

Chapter 0A - Scratching the surface.

Question: Ali why is there a yellow colored gameboy shown in the screenshot with the current time date and everything. Hell, why does it look like your on an IOS device?

Alright lets check out the video game and as soon as I do, I have a choice to make.


Kanto or Johto?
Well, either way, I don't know yet and I'm just checking out what my choices, so I am just gonna select a region for now so I can atleast see what else I can do, since I heard there was plenty of customization I could do. I don't really know so I'll just ask MS.
Should I start in Kanto or Johto?

- Slowpoke looked appealing, but I kinda want a more traditional starter tbh
- Fuck Charmander
- Squirtle is like chill and all, squirtle squad squirtle gang squirtle 4 life yo, but like, its evolutions? Not gang material.

That leaves us with bulbasaur, the best gen 1 starter.

Chapter 0B - Getting Ready For Our Pokemon Adventure

So we are starting in the Johto region because of popular demand.
In my opinion, ywall made a good decision.
Fuck Kanto
That shit blows.
Its so overated.

But anyhow, look, its time to introduce ywall to our young lad who is going to be going through the regions

I'm actually pretty proud of myself here with this one because she looks pretty fine and I feel ike the colors go really well together.
Also her name will be Tish


Then lastly we choose our bag.

We still went with the same design because its so funny, I look like I'm stealing a bunch of Christmas Presents, but I'll show some others off:

I got some sad news though:
I won't be using a bulbasaur.
I kinda thought about it a lot actually, and knowing that these were my choices I decided to think on it for a bit.
And here were the choices so everyone knows exactly what I had to choose from:

So with this in mind, I kinda decided that there was a diff grass type I wanted to use, and instead, I decided to use a mon I never used before:

All of its evolutions seem really fun to use so might as well give it a shot

Anyhow, we got lectured on how the game works!
Here are the cliffs:

1) The world is opened up, there are less restrictions on where I can go and I can go practically anywhere from the start
2) The game scales with badges. More badges = tougher trainers. More badges = more stuff. I can also rechallenge gyms at any level. Some trainers don't scale if they're related to story events like the sages in sprout tower
3) New features. One of the ones which I might abuse is the ability to save just before I get my starter combined with the new quick continue feature makes it so I can shiny farm for or in this case, if I was GOING to use a bulbasaur, make sure it can TANK LOTS OF DAMAGE. Gift pokemon are increased to be shiny.
4) New Areas to explore!
5) Fuck story that shit sucks
6) I can catch 251 pokemon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7) It has to do with pokemon stadium so i don't give a fuck
8) A lot of things are renewable. Roamers, stationary encounters, and gift mons. All I gotta do is beat the E4. Also TM marts after I get certain amount of badges
9) I love heartgold and soulsilver best game tbh. Yeah thats right, we can have our mons follow us. Ya know I'm gonna get myself a Furret and have it following me all of the time, Furret gotta walk

Chapter 1 - Meet the Captain

So, one thing you can do thats new in this game is change the music that appears in wild encounters, your bike theme, and so on.
Some of the bike themes is funny because there's a mirror b battle 8-bit track on the bike which is really cool, but I think its out of place. I would love to use that in battles sometimes but while I'm on my bike? Naaaaaaah.

You can actually listen to this here if you want, this is the developer's soundcloud which has a bunch of cool 8-bit tracks.
It so fitting and I'll probably turn it on when I'm feeling up for it.
But for now, these are my beats (and yeah I did kind of upload one of these a couple days ago and a new one just now because I forgot it, but sometimes I'll just play the game get screenshots and upload what I previously played for another day)

This is decently important, I don't think I will be showing every trainer battle. I started to notice that some trainer battles are just "spam this move and you win lulw" and its a waste of my time to screencap as well as its not really interesting content. If you disagree with this, let me know.

Chapter 4 - The Captain's Gambling Issues

So, we just beat whitney, and usually after we beat a gym leader, the pokemon league will give us a call and update us on things to do. It tells us we can take on Sprout tower but fuck that, we got fucking destroyed there, we aren't ready for that shit.

Anyhow, I decide to grind a bit so that this could happen!



Our Captain is now in its perfect form!

Also we find ourselves an eevee that we won't be using

as well as get ourselves a bike


we pick ourselves up a coin case in the underground

and then we decided to gamble...
Yeah we kinda looked at the prizes and saw some stuff that the Captain really wanted.
A new friend, a Lucky Egg, and the XP share. Quite frankly, I can't blame em, that is stuff we need.
We also heard from one dude that the Celadon's slot machine's are easier, so Captain keeps this in mind.

Either way thats 5500 coins
and the only real way to get coins quickly is slots
and if you're familiar with Crystal's slot machine mechanics, it loves to troll you
and while you COULD do voltorb switch, it softlocks if you try lulw!
So basically the only thing we can do to quickly get coins is to get jackpot 7s which gives us, 777 coins.
We do this and we get our stuff and our new friend:


But our Captain wants to gamble more because he got an addiction, so she practically begs to be taken to Celadon.
Which we induldge her on because I love spoiling this mon and giving her what she wants.

SO, the Grass type we wanted to catch that we decided was oh SO MUCH MORE APPEALING then Wendy we decided to use is

we just got 5 lefties, but we came to Kanto for 1 other reason:
to catch another mon!

and the mon we're catching, we have to go over to the Rock Cave above Lavender town for.

But wait, this mon is missing something
its missing a Thick Club!
because Marowak honestly isn't a pokemon without Thick Club
and this was a bitch to get because basically, it has a

But we did manage to get one, tho it took us some time


And now we're gonna go back to Johto to get our last mon.

Chapter 6 - The Captain and the Goons is on a roll!

So while I'm drinking a bunch of sodas to try to exploit the steam summer event, I figure I would continue this and take on some gyms today.

Yesterday I kinda grinded my mons up a bit since I was really underleveled


I also gave some mons some moves, mostly teaching curse to Captain and Missy and Ice Beam/T-Bolt to Iconeum


I was kinda aimless with my grinding for a bit, but then I realized I can just rechallenge Whitney a bunch until I got the levels I needed, anyhow its time to beat Misty!


this goldeen mighta given me trouble if it wasn't low level and it had abilities, most specificly lightning rod, but for the most part, Iconeum kinda just gives everything in the gym a thunderbolt and calls it a day.


Anyhow this is Misty


I like to use mons I want to use!

Unforunately, her lapras is kinda bulky so Iconeum can't really kill it


Not that thats really an issue for the GOONS

though with some switches and curse stalling, we do win



we get a badge, blizzard, and a call from the pokemon league which tells us to go get cut

and we also beat up this guy who gave me some trouble.
You see, while I was wondering around aimlessly trying to figure out where to grind, I grinded against the trainers in goldenrod's underground and I came across this guy. He had 10 levels above everything except for Captain. His "yams" only had 1 attacking move and it ran out of PP so Bone Head kinda just PP stalled it, lowered its stats, then killed it, but it couldn't kill the rest of the mons he had. It got 2 levels tho but anyways, we can take him now for sho

our strategy for killing this thing is to send out missy, use curse, and then to protect stall it because its only attacking move is:
Solarbeam.
So that dies and he sends in Sudowoodo
I swap to Captain and he decides to use Lick

But he ONLY decides to use lick so I curse up and then I sweep

meaning that that dies as well as this thing also dies.
The jerk still doesn't really wanna move tho


But alright, lets take on the ice gym now!


And we take on Pryce but before that

Just before Pryce, Mafia Goon evolved into Hitmonlee.
So uh
yeah what kind of ends up happening is that Mafia Goon HJKs a mon
then that mon dies
then he HJKs another mon
and that mon dies
and then he HJKs his last mon
which then also dies.

Its very unimpressive but hey, we got our badge as well as icy wind

and also a call from the pokemon league again telling us we can fly places now
which would be nice since you can fly anywhere, even to places you haven't been before, but our only mon we're gonna put fly on is Iconeum and at this moment, he can't fly.
So............

this is the next gym I want to take on.
Its probably going to be hardest gym considering I have literally 0 ghost coverage.
But I have to grind up to level 25 in order to probably be fine.

all you do is you just spam the same move(s) until someone dies
then once you complete a gym battle guess what, you have to GRIND in order for you to beat the next gym leader

Its nice to have a speed up button which does make things easier

The reason why I enjoy playing these fan games is because
- It feels satisfying to complete a pokemon journey. I view all of my mons I use as friends and being able to complete that journey feels really satisfying and I bet it’ll feel satisfying here as well
- sometimes the stories can be good in these fan games and that usually has me hooked.

I just honestly hate the pokemon battles themselves the combat is just not engaging

I think the reason why I like Pokemon games comes down to the journey.
Completing the Pokedex isn't really a thing I'd set myself out to do except if it was a quest that gave me goodies that I wanted
The battling itself like, I enjoy a hard battle, its just that the combat sucks, and thats a flaw with the RPG itself.
Because of how its structured as an RPG, you see a lot of vgc players just hacking in their teams, since trying to get that perfect 6iv mon with all of the egg moves you want on it with its perfect nature and ability is time consuming.
Grinding is tedious and makes you want to hack in rare candies or wish there was a chansey(audino trainer for later gen games) because the combat sucks.

Not to mention in this case, I feel like there's no pace to the game (which is kind of the point cause its open world), but it leaves me with thinking "ok, what do I do next, just go and take on the next gym? lol?" and what do I do before I take on the next gym? or is it just grinding is that it?

But the journey is what I LOVE about pokemon games.
It feels satisfying to become the champion.
It makes you happy and give you fuzzy feelings.
It feels
so good

and I genuinely see my pokemon as companions and friends with their own stories.

not to mention I love the world of pokemon and the fact that you can be just a kid but take down an evil organization and experience amazing things like Spear Pillar in Plantium, or meeting Lugia/Ho-Oh in Heart Gold/Soul Silver, or just the champion battle in of itself.

I will be juggling this game as well as Pokemon Rejuvenation at the same time.

In regards to this run, I think Cubone not being able to learn Earthquake from the move tutor along with some other mons not being able to learn moves is a bug I actually want to fix.
However, due to the emulator I'm using, fixing that bug isn't actually possible without having to do my save I think.

As you can probably tell, its missing a member.
And I haven't decided on who that will be
I am considering Tyranitar but I am very open to suggestions. I can use something fun like Miltank, or I can use something good like Snorlax or a legendary dog (Entei is in the fun category not the good category)
You can suggest something for me to use, just don't suggest mew, mewtwo, Ho-oh, and Lugia, I don't want to use those.
Either way if it sounds fun I'll use it.
I'll encourage the suggestions to focus on typings that I currently don't have on my team which is
Normal (With Fighting and Ghost Coverage)
Ghost
Ground (With Rock Coverage)
Dragon/Flying (My final moveset in mind for the Dragonite is Fly, Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, but this is definitely subject to change)
Grass/Psychic (This thing has access to HP Fire so I will be putting that on this mon)

Here is my first impressions of Clear Crystal
- The premise is really good, an Open World for Pokemon where you can go anywhere you want whenever you want sounds really good and fun. And the game does this really really well.
- I don't think Johto is the region for it though. I kinda got really bored with this because its like "oh I'm exploring these same areas that I've been to previously in HG/SS and I'm fighting the same battles, except it has no pace so I'm not sure on if I'm overleveled or underleveled, there's no goal or any real reason to do anything else other then take on the gym challenges. And its a pokemon game so the combat sucks. Thats just a fact, the combat sucks in pokemon.
- I kind of wish I had a new region to explore since I really LOVE the mapping that can be done in pokemon games. I'm going to take some examples out of Reborn and Rejuv. Lets look at Reborn's approach to a Desert.
Here is one screenshot. I'm on 1/4 zoom so I am as zoomed out as I can possibly be

its pretty simple but to put into words
ITS A REALISTIC DESERT YOU'RE THROWN INTO THE MIDDLE OF IT AND YOU HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO GO BUT EXPLORE IT, AND WHERE ARE YOU?
IN THE MIDDLE OF FUCKING NOWHERE.
You can easily get lost in this place for hours just looking for a fucking oasis, to then go look for another fucking oasis because they spawn in random locations.
And you have plenty where you can go to, I'm not screenshotting it all but you get the point.

But we haven't even gotten to Rejuv's mapping.

See, the thing with Reborn is that, it has a linear story where more places open up as you complete the game. This is true for most pokemon games but the location is also important. It takes place in a city, so you're going through the city and then exploring a bit out of it. My point is, its small, and its not like a pokemon game where you're exploring a whole region and going from town to town. In Reborn, its more like you're going from part of a city to another part in certain points, then kinda just exploring around it, but the main focus is: Reborn City.

In Rejuv, its more traditional in that you do go from town to town.
You get maps like this

Where in that route, it looks so good you want to stay in it forever, or Sheridan Village


with really villager-esque houses that make you want to LIVE there, and the music is nice it really sets the mood, but its mapped to look like a peaceful village and one you would love to call home, and coming from a really big city? Its really refreshing to see.
But then, at the next town, you have America in the early 20th century

If you look real closely, you can see a noose on the Giratina statue, and the music the area has, the architecture, the Murkows, all provide this eerie feeling that the town has.
I can post more maps but I'm not going to, because my point is:
Rejuv is a game where you're excited to see what places you'll end up visiting next and looking at how beautiful they are and trying to notice each and every single little detail.
Clear Crystal isn't a game that can provide that feeling for me, I'm already familar with all of the towns and nothing really seems that stunning for me to look at anymore.

A concept like an open world pokemon game would be really amazing if we were exploring a completely new region with really good mapping.
Sword and Shield DOES get some respect behind it because the Wild Area looks decently fun and the new areas there do look fun and cool to explore, but those games will suck so it won't matter, the graphics suck (just look at the fucking wingull in that game and the trees). That game is going to suck.

- Difficulty wise, that Bugsy fight was actually kinda harder then I thought it would be. Fuck that butterfree. I genuinely feel like I kind of do need to strategize a bit. I'll play the game some more and give this its chance, to really thrive because early game difficulty isn't anything special, the early game is bound to be pretty easy.

Anyhow, those are my first impressions of the game.
As I play more I'll probably have a better understanding of the game and may change my mind on a few things as well as be able to offer insight into other things.

final thoughts: GL/E4 re-matches are pointless, they don't go to level 100 and I'm just overleveled so theres no challenge
and i get my furret is op but in theory I should be able to setup on anyone with x items and then sweep
combat in this game sucks
i don't care enough to explore the new areas
good open world game but not for me since I kind of need to be told where to go and know how to pace my levels, and it seems like there's a lot of grinding
