It's explicitly banned by the paperback rules to give a positional clue
I am pretty sure that is actually what the clue was for though because that makes lots of sense and I see nothing else on the board that makes sense.
Did you guys have a house rule in place for positional clues?
It's not positional in the same sense that rules explain it, they say like, don't do "COLUMN 5" because it's 5 blue cards in the the fifth column of the board. This is a weird compound word created by the positioning. But it still breaks the spirit of the rule, like, if Stranger Coug randomized how the grid looked to each person and PMed it to each person would your clue still work just fine? So angleshooting at the barest minimum.

Tokyo is weird as it was definitely not A-Bombed but is in the group of things which is "large Japanese cities" and all the things that have been A-bombed with more than a couple thousand casualties have been in the group of things "large Japanese cities".

Then Sub is short for Submarine which is one of the most useful things for atomic/nuclear war due to the unblockability of it and how it can have mutually assured destruction implications even if your infrastructure has been targeted.

I don't know any historical info about Gawain. However, my weaboo Gawain card was white instead of green and it is also the centerpiece of my life right now

This is probably a reference to the new system musical artists have adopted for keeping stoners out of their concerts: "the Triangle Gate". For those artists that believe drugs dampen the enjoyment of a musical performance rather than truly enhancing it, they find it depressing to pour their soul into their work and realize so much of their audience is baked out of their minds. The tester asks the attendee to perform using their chosen instrument, and also plays five melodies with some pre-selected, pre-tuned triangles, challenging the attendee to recognize which triangle is out of tune or not worthy of true musical appreciation. Once the staff member is satisfied the attendee "gated in", to call it by the slang term, and the last thing the attendee will do before turning off their phone to respect the artist is post an excited tweet about their success to their friends, sometimes accompanied by a brag about how far from sober they were at the time of the test.

The only other Silver thing is "mass", somewhat strengthened by silver being an element. And its price measured in mass. But Silver connecting plate and Aztec seems a lot like "I see why you would have to do that", silver connecting plate and mass makes me think "surely there was something more direct".

like the idea of needing to divide your army into legions is inherently a leadership problem

Comic is kind of high risk high reward because if he hasn't heard of the comic book character it could be assassin or the other team's. I haven't heard of the comic book character. We could still pick Comic up at the end on a win-it-or-lose-it turn if we need to.
Lead seems like it's definitely close enough to Legion to be safe from being Assassin and I think both Eagle and Centaur are arguably conceptually similar enough to be safe.

I also thought a little bit about Foot since legions are usually Foot Soldiers. They actually usually aren't cavalyr which is a strike against centaur even if I think Centaurs are super soldiery.
"Eagle, Lead, Foot" makes all 3 clues conceptually related to roman legions and cluemasters are more likely to give a clue the repeatedly works the same angle instead of several different ones so I think I like that set of guesses best.

Kinda makes me wonder what kind of bonkers clues get unlocked once you allow googling, because I do think you end up guessing "Deck, Air, Spell" off that clue, and I can't think of something easy that also gets you "Air, Deck, Spell" off the top of my head.

"Encrypted" could also relate to Pyramid or Block. Pyramid because hieroglyphs are kind of like a code, block because of "blockchain", blockchain uses encryption to function.

I still favor code, spy, note, because they're the most direct and lowest risk of scoring for the other team, but sometimes when choices are obvious and straightforward that kinda means they fail to really explain why a certain clue was chosen over a different one (especially when the words themselves are related, spy, code, and note are all kind of naturally related to eachother in a way "block" in particular isn't)

I like Tower>Ground>Pyramid best. My runner up would be Tower>Ground>Tooth because I think certain type of severe cavities use the terminology and concept of collapsing. I don't like Himalayas because I don't think they will collapse, like, ever, eventually mountains are eroded down to ground level again after millions or billions of years but they get sanded from the top so that they never collapse.
Collapse would have to be a reference to avalanches which are kind of like little collapses of a snow buildup that's happened, but it's not a collapse of the Himalayas itself, just some boulder that happened to be holding back a lot of snow. I don't think the Himalayas even experience that as much as most mountains cause it's an arid region? I might have made that up though. Have not visited Himalayas. Generally I favor "is-a" relationships over "has-a" or "comes-with" and the ground, a pyramid, and a tower can all collapse.
