Hmmmm okay. Scientist, round, and death jump right out at me. Round is probably the weakest of those, but it's pretty strong. Weak association to chest, very weak to paper.

An oncologist is a medical doctor specializing in cancers. It's one of the most technical and scientific branches of medicine, as well as one of the most highly-active research sectors in the field. Scientist is locked, and I think death is too.

Round is a little weaker, but still probably the third. Doctors do rounds to check on their patients, especially in long-term care like some cancer wards. Chest is vaguely medical, and there's a lot of paperwork involved. Knowing Haschel's sophistication, I doubt he'd miss the "round" connection.

Hmmm. That said, why "oncologist" and not simply "doctor" or "physician?" Maybe I'm missing something.

I do; I'm an emergency medical technician. I'm not seeing anything else related to cancer, though. There's a foundation for cancer research using the acronym CHEST, but if you look closely enough there's oncology-related acronyms for Bat and Net, a treatment designed to Cloak cancer cells, etc. I doubt Haschel sends us that far into the weeds.

I'd like to promote Paper up to main consideration. In the context of medicine as a science, and oncology in particular as a research-driven branch of its practice, Paper looks a lot more attractive, as in "research paper".

Definitely Beijing. Beijing -> China -> Porcelain

Mug is a strong second candidate, as an object which might be made of porcelain (One of my dad's retirement hobbies has been pottery. We got him fifty pounds of porcelain clay for Christmas, so now I have a porcelain mug)

Paper is involved in some porcelain-making processes I think? Ground -> clay, round -> potter's wheel?

Probably Beijing + Mug

Mug is a strong

Yeah I endorse that. It’s quick and dirty and almost feels too straightforward for Haschel, but sometimes it’s like that

As we’re all in agreement,

Correct

Unfortunately, this throws me for a loop, because I see multiple answers.

Shop works for the mechanic angle
Van is a vehicle
Saturn is a brand of car (my first car was a Saturn) though I think not a GM
Club also fits maybe? Was there a Goodwrench club or something?

I'm stymied over why he chose Goodwrench instead of mechanic or automotive if the above is correct.

Disagree, N+1 is important.

It lets you circle back around to pick up words you missed from a botched guess, and in a pinch when behind you can random-guess. My board game group just lets you guess until you pass (or get one wrong ofc)

Agreed, let's also consider "shoe," as "shoo fly" is a common saying, and Charles may be playing with homophones.

Well, Tie-dye seems fairly obvious.

Tie

The other one, though...I’m not sure.

If we’re going to mess with homonyms, then DICE is a fairly obvious option, with CAST thrown in there too for the die-cast manufacturing method.

As for dye, though...without getting really REALLY esoteric about where the source of some dyes come from - is there a dye derived from cacao beans? Date palms? Idfk

Best guess is dice, but I don’t like to dick with homonyms if I don’t have to

Ugh

I don’t like any of those options.

Red has 5, needs 9
Blue has 6, needs 8

I think Pass is the right option? Charles needs another go at it anyway, this gives him a shot to tie the last two together in a way that excludes the wrong option. I mean, best case right now, we get it right and he gives us an obvious 1-clue.

I’d rather take the small risk inherent in passing.

Cell, lock, fence all jump out. Horse too, as horse gates are a thing, but I think it unlikely he meant that. Cells usually have doors

Fence and lock seem appropriate

That’s the challenge when playing this game with people with a lot of esoteric trivia junking about in their head. You can make really cool references (Gawain -> Forest) but run the risk of some bit of lore you missed giving a false positive

Ghost for sure, spell is a good choice

The third one eludes me, though I keep coming back to thief. There’s a D&D monster called the Ethereal Filcher which phases through walls to steal things, but I don’t know if that’s too obscure a reference for Vash to make.

They got these too, that's game.

Look, I can understand why the mod action pissed you off, reds, but it was a simple error on my part. The 0/unlimited rule doesn't come up often, and I made a straightforward error. The intent was pretty clear - bodybuilder was meant to point to Belt and Beach, not away from it. In my local tabletop group, we dispense entirely with the limitations on guessing, with the number reduced only to a guideline on how many clues it's referencing. We let players guess until they pass or get one wrong. IIRC, the recent usage of /0 was the first time I've actually seen it used, and it got conflated with the intended unlimited.

Sorry to have screwed this up, it was otherwise a nailbiter of a game. I'll /out for a game or two.

Okay! I have words randomized, the table constructed, and ownership of the thread transferred, but we don't have full teams.

Right now I'm seeing the following for players:

OkaPoka (Field Operative)
dweller (Spymaster)
dsjstr
Egix96
StrangerCoug (Field Operative)
Menalque (Spymaster)
Haschel Cedricson

We need one more and we can get started.
