The Metal Forüm

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sat Jul 27, 2019 2:02 pm

Post by Dr Easy Bake »

Hey everyone! I looked aroünd to see if there was a forüm like this already büt I coüldn't find one!

I've been a metalhead for a süper long time now. It's not the only kind of müsic I listen to büt it's my bread and bütter. I've always strüggled to find peers that have the same love for this müsic as I do. My best friend loves it with me and then a few scattered acqüaintances love it as well, büt I've never been in a Metal commünity and I think that woüld be really fün to have one here if people are interested.

While I said I listen to many genres, I do think Metal is süpremely the best. This is mainly becaüse Metal can mean so many things. The genre has boündless sübgenres appealing to nearly all tastes. For instance: if yoü're not a fan of hip-hop overall, yoü probably won't like grime or boom-bap (sübgenres of hip-hop), but if yoü're not a fan of metal overall, there still might be a sübgenre oüt there for yoü that yoü haven't heard yet. An example of this: I have a friend who is a hüge hip-hop-head, like 95% of his müsic knowledge is hip-hop/rap related, and he knows a lot. I showed him a few things that I thoüght he might like. Now I didn't convert him into one of üs but he did really like Hacktivist. They're a rap/djent band from England that I have been a hüge fan of. I knew with their rap/hip-hop inflüences and soünd that this woüld probably be the best thing for me to show him.

Moral of the story is, Metal is a genre for everyone. If yoü like müsic, there's probably a Metal sübgenre out there for yoü.

This forüm can be whatever we want to be. In the heydays of thrash, we ran the fücking world! I'd like to see that happen again. Anything Metal related is welcome: thoüghts on new releases, bands everyone shoüld be listening to, Metal news... anything!

All I ask is that we stray from elitism. That's the worst part of the worldwide Metal commünity. The definition of what's Metal or not can be extremely different from person to person. If yoü don't like what someone else posts, cool, don't attack them and say "that's not real Metal." I've been tired of that kind of thinking for a long time. I don't want to deal with any TRVE CVLTERS or elitists when I talk aboüt something I love and am passionate aboüt, I'm süre y'all can empathize with that.

Image

I'll start by sharing a band I'm really into right now:

Entheos is a fücking amazing süpergroüp. I've always been a fan büt after seeing them live again a few weeks ago I got even more hooked. I've been listening to their most recent albüm like crazy. These müsicians are on another level. They've got the original drümmer for Animals as Leaders and a güitarist from Scale the Summit. I have a slight complaint aboüt the way they mix vocals on their müsic (I think they're incredibly qüiet and she is too damn good of a vocalist to not be heard perfectly. I'm a vocalist too so I'm a bit biased...süe me lol). I was eventüally able to get past that and fücking fall in love with
Dark Future
. If you like really heavy prog then should be able to just fall perfectly into their music.

Just to get things off and running if people start being a part of this, here's a current metal topic to discuss:

How about this new Infant Annihilator single?
I feel like most people in the community know what they're about: British Metal memers out to make the heaviest and most disturbing death metal in the world. Their first new music in three years just hit the internet on Friday. I'm going to wait on other people to give opinions before I give mine, but I have loved what these guys have done in the past, so definitely consider me a fan.
Thoughts on these lovable, talented, dumbasses?

Awesome!
I love A Novelist, their release really blew me away. I like hearing non-traditional metal instruments in metal.
That Warforged came in heavy as fuck! I can't believe they made a music video for the whole damn album, that's next level.
|
is definitely getting added to my rotation. I wanna get stoned and watch the whole video lol
I couldn't really get into An Isolated Mind or Joliette but it's mostly a production thing. I think Joliette had really cool chords and riffs, and it was catchy as shit, but I'd like to hear them more clearly!
I really dug the vocals from Adrift too.

Thanks for being the first non-joke post! Any thoughts on the two vids I posted? I can kind of see where your tastes are at so they might not be your thing but I don't wanna assume.

Cool, I'm gonna work through what you posted and get back to you.
To be fair Entheos despite having dudes from Scale the Summit/Animals as Leaders, they sound nothing like them. Definitely more just really heavy prog with death metal vocals. If you're not into the heavier sides of death metal then Infant Annihilator is most definitely not gonna be for you. They are like THE most extreme thing in death metal, at least from my point of view.

Aw, dude, the Hirsch Effekt is flipping amazing. I haven't gotten too deep into their catalog, but I've listened to a lot of
Eskapist.
Long Branch Records has some of my favorite acts right now like Ghost Iris, Unprocessed and Cabal.

Couldn't really get into Mithras or El Drugstore. Just not my thing I guess. I still totally respect what they got going on and respect the appeal. The more metal in the world, the better.
Spectral Lore, I ran into the same problem as before with the production. I really like black metal style stuff but it's always been hard for me to listen to because of the production qualities.
I really dug Wilderun, those were some insanely beautiful chords. I'm a sucker for big pretty chords. Some of their stuff reminded me of Carach Angren. Mainly the guitar tone, they're mixed very differently but I wouldn't be surprised to find out they used similar gear. That's just my producer ear noticing random things though.

LOL I haven’t listened to INK in a long ass time. I remember when they were a pop-punk band, jeez that was so long ago. I like how you posted Baroness and INK in the same realm, I’m glad other people out there aren’t stuck to one subset of Metal like many are. Last time I was really into INK was back in 2014 with
The Predator Becomes the Prey
. I haven’t really liked the new version of them. I dig the whole horror apathetic but I’m just not into the music anymore. They lost a lot of members and I think they’ve definitely changed, even though it’s always been mainly Spencer’s band. I got to hang out with their old rhythm guitarist turned bassist at a show back in like 2012 or something. He was a really cool dude that like took us all around the venue as he was trying to sell CDs. That guy is now in Motionless in White haha

I’m like blown away. One of the best death metal albums I’ve ever heard so far. I might be seeing it with rose colored glasses right now though. Was listening while I was stoned before bed last night. The way they ended the song “The Battle of Yaldabaoth” was BDE.

I mean it's definitely the most "serious attempt" if you wanna put it that way. But it's still IA. Yaldabaoth is a Death Metal/Tech Death Masterpiece in my opinion though.

I agree I guess the songwriting in Infant just makes sense to me.
Now, this shit is just wacko. Atonal is weird.

I just don’t see how anyone that considers themselves a metal head could not see Archspire as “cool.”
Your post reads as really pretentious btw

Can we all agree that this new Veil of Maya single is trash though? Like they’ve just become a shitty Periphery.
I don’t want to be a member to whatever club they’ve got going on.

Like what happened to the good ole Veil of Maya??

Now, I really enjoyed the last two albums with Lukas,
Matriarch
and
False Idols
(I’ve even got a vocal cover up on YouTube for “Pool Spray” if anyone is interested), but I cannot get behind whatever this new shit is. I can’t fully judge until the album comes up but if it’s anything like “Members Only” then I will not be happy.

sorry for having preferences
Lol have your preferences dude but you busted in here calling something that people put a shit ton of work into a "joke" just because you can't be bothered with players that are skilled with their instruments. Also, something sounding cool is subjective but skill/talent is not.
That's how I took your post, even if it wasn't your intention like you look down your nose at people who spend time to master their instrument.

Maybe there is some miscommunication here, but I took calling it a joke as an insult.

^^disagree
Alright, well there's our problem.
When you insult a piece of music you also insult anyone who listens to that music.
There is no such thing as "bad" music, only bad players and/or bad fans.
You dismissing something as "bad" is incredibly selfish and close-minded because you aren't taking into consideration what that music does for other people. You are only thinking about
your
experience with the music, which you might perceive to be bad, and there might be people that agree with you. But, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's "bad," it just means it's not for you. By labeling it as "bad' you are negating the emotions/opinions of the people that enjoy it. Music is arguably the most subjective thing on this planet. No one has the right to call any of it "bad."
By all means, you have every right to not enjoy something, and others have the right to enjoy that thing. But if a piece of music exists, at least one person in the world enjoys it or enjoyed it at some point. I don't appreciate the negation of any music fan's thoughts on said music.
I don't like most electronic music, but I would
never
say any of it is "bad."

You weren't cracking jokes. You called the album a joke and then called it bad music.

Then tried to dismiss me when I had an opinion about that by saying it was "unhealthy" to defend something I feel passionate about.

I'm not insulted by you disliking an album that I liked, I'm not a child that needs everyone to like what I like.
I'm mostly a metal-head so I'm used to people not enjoying the same things I do.
I'm insulted that you simply dismissed it as "bad." That's not a review, that's you going "I don't like this, therefore it is bad because I only like good things."
Now that's an unhealthy mindset.

A music reviewer doesn't write something like this: This was bad. 0/5 stars.

They write an essay of thoughts on why or why they don't personally like it.

If you're not here to expend effort then why are you here?
And I already explained why I do take it personally.

And I'm not saying you need to write all of your thoughts to express your feelings about something. You can simply write it's not for you instead of dismissing it and calling it bad.

I mean, if this was a face to face argument I'm sure it would have gone differently. It's hard to make words come across the way you want them to with written text.
I can admit that I definitely got tilted.
