Announcing Team Mafia 2020

This event will begin on January 2nd, 2020. This gives everyone ample time to get teams together and for those who wish to participate to wind down their current commitments.

Team Mafia

is a sitewide event spanning five games. Teams of four players will be given the opportunity to choose four out of the five games to be placed in, and will work together to win their chosen games. Scoring, based on whether or not your team was in winning games, will determine the overall winners of the event. The winning team will receive a banner for their accounts that will be displayed until the next Team Mafia event or the next Scummies, whichever comes first. The tentative plan for the five games will be

1. A large theme, run by Untrod Tripod
2. A mini theme, run by PenguinPower
3. A mini normal, run by implosion
4. A white flag open, run by T-Bone
5. A small open setup, run by Micc

These games will be moderated by members of the Listmod team. Each team will be required to put a player in the large theme. Therefore, the number of players in the large theme will be the same as the number of teams in the event. The numbers in all of the games will be determined by the number of participating teams.

So, given the objections, I think the smarter thing to do is just eliminate the possibility for this dumb meta argument and have teams submit a preference list for games and then be randomly assigned roles after they divvy up the assigned games among the team members.

One thing that I wanted to have in this event that was unique was teams being able to play to their strengths to some degree. We might give each team one swap once roles are randomized, since it would be a calculated risk that a team could take.

Regardless, there is no swap mechanic in place currently and I will be allowing people to submit personal blacklists when we do the game selection. That will eliminate the need for blacklist-related swaps.

Until the next Scummies banners are given out the following year (i.e. 2019 scummies given out in 2020) or the next team mafia starts, whichever is earlier.

Here's what I'll do: to make it easier to put teams together I will post a table of currently entered teams along with a list of free agents. If you would like to explicitly list yourself as a free agent in this thread just do something like

Hello all, and thank you to everyone who has signed up so far. Signups will end tomorrow at 17:00 EST.

Blacklist process -

What you will do is put lists together for your team and post the final list in the PT.

I will blank all relevant discussion and posts before PTs are released at the end of the event.

Do not try to game the system by putting a large number of players in the blacklist. The purpose of this blacklist is to prevent personal drama from derailing games and to help us all create a positive game experience. Please take this process seriously. Once you are placed into games you will not be able to switch out.

Ah, yes.

So the open setups are open to community input. The final setups will not be available until at least December 8th. We therefore will not be able to start the game requests until after the open setups are available for perusal from the players. This was not my original plan, but it was how we ended up doing it. I liked the idea of community input, it just didn't gel with the timeline I set up initially. We will still be on track to start shortly after Jan 1st 2020.

Okay, we're set to go on sending in your game choices. At the bottom of this post will be descriptions of all the games (and the actual setup for the open game). What follows is the explanation for how to send me your game picks.

You will post these lists in your PT.

Each team is required to have a player in the Large Theme, however you will provide a 1-5 ranking of all five games with a player assigned to 4 of the games. If your team does not receive one of your picks for the 3 games, the player who is not given their chosen game will be assigned to the unassigned game on your list. In cases where more teams request a game than there are slots, preferences will be given to the teams that listed the game higher. List the LT as 5th. The reason why players must be listed is that the roles will be randomly assigned by game mods to eliminate any meta game analysis based on what player on what team might have "chosen a town/mafia/3P role PM" Below is an example that hopefully makes this clearer.

1: Open - Player A
2: Mini Theme - Player B
3: White Flag - Player C
4: Mini Normal
5: Large Theme - Player D

If, in the above example, the team is placed in all the games they chose then it will be exactly as they chose. If, for some reason, they are not able to have a slot in the White Flag, Player C will be put in the Mini Normal.

If you have any doubt about whether something is against the rules or not, pm your mod and me, and ask.

Team Communication

1. Each team will be provided a Private Topic (PT).
2. Each team will also be provided a Discord Channel (DC), upon request.
3. Players may copy and paste whatever they want into their PT/DC.

They may not copy and paste text OUT of their PT/DC into game threads.

4. Players may continue to communicate with their team after in-game death in their provided PT/DC.

5. There are no restrictions for what players can post in their PT/DC's outside of not breaking site rules.

6. We'd prefer if teams used the provided means of communication. If your team really wants/needs to user another, please contact Untrod Tripod. The organizing team will need to be able to access any means of communication in an emergency.

7. Team PT/DC's will only be made public after the game if all players on the team consent to their release.
8. All Game PT's including all scum PT's will automatically be released after Team Mafia.

9. There will not be Spectator/Dead PT's.

Talking About Other Games

1. There are no restrictions for what players can post in their PT/DC's outside of not breaking site rules. The rules for this section refer to what players can talk about in their ongoing games and ongoing game PT's.

2. Players are only allowed to talk about mod-confirmed things from other ongoing Team Mafia games.

Examples of things that ARE allowed

• Stating who is on what team.
  
• Stating what Day or Night another game is in.
  
• Stating how many players are left alive on a team.
  
• Stating how many town or scum are alive in another game.
  
• Stating whether a dead player in another game has flipped town or scum.

3. Any public speculation about other ongoing games is prohibited.
4. Any attempt to publically signal players from other ongoing games, pass messages to players from other games, or otherwise communicate through the use of cryptography is prohibited.
5. Do not try to loophole these rules. If anyone has questions at any point about what is allowed or not allowed please message me (Untrod Tripod).

6. To repeat: If you have any doubt about whether something is against the rules or not, PM your mod and me, and ask.

Your Teammates are Always Innocent Until Proven Guilty

1. You may at no time say, indicate, insinuate, etc. that your Team Mafia teammates are or might be anything other than town. This includes in any hypothetical situation.
2. Exception: You may talk about your teammates being scum if they have flipped scum in another game (i.e. are dead).
3. If a player is NOT on your team and is still alive in another game, you must follow the rules in the Talking About Other Games thread.

Replacements

1. It is your job to replace team members who are not active. If you require assistance from the moderator or any event organizer, there will be a tiebreak penalty.
2. To replace a team member, you must PM Untrod Tripod AND the moderator of your game. We have a list of replacements that you will be able to choose from.
3. You may replace with anyone who is not currently on a Team Mafia team, has not previously been on a different Team Mafia team, is and has not been part of the Team Mafia Organizing team (Moderators, Balance-checkers, players in tiebreak game), and is eligible to play in mafia games. However, only 4 people may be involved in the PT at any time. A replaced team member may not participate in any way unless he is replaced back in.
4. The mod will force replace any player who has not posted within 3 days (Prodded after 2 days, no response for 1 more) of his last post (not including Night). This will come at a penalty to the team.
5. If a player must be replaced due to mod errors or another outside influence (such as gaining information that they should not be able to have), the mods may assist in finding a replacement without assessing a penalty.

Scoring

Team Mafia 2020 is, chiefly, a competition between teams. Therefore, there is a scoring system.

1. Each team will be rewarded 1 point for being on the winning side of a finished game, even if they died before the game ended.
2. The team with the most points wins.

At the end of each game and at the end of the whole event, there will be a survey distributed to the teams. For the games the survey will require each player to vote, on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the least important 10 being the most important, how important a player was in their side winning the game. For the Team Survey, each player will be required to vote how deserving each team is of winning the event on a scale from 1 to 10.

In the event of a tie, there is a tiebreaker. In order of importance:

1. Being on the winning side of the Large Theme.
2. Having the best average score in the Game Survey.
3. Having the best score in the Team Survey.
4. The TM2020 Mods vote on a winner.

In posts 1411 and 1412, Elements committed a trust tell, which breaks site Mafia Rule #2. From the definition of trust tells:

A trust tell fits both of the following criteria:

The player insists that they only do this behavior as a certain alignment, and never as any other alignment.
The player, over the course of multiple games, only does this behavior as a certain alignment, and never as any other alignment.

From this post, Elements doubled down by continuing to insist he's never voted himself as scum (breaking the first definition for trust tells) and then stating he's done it over the course of multiple games (breaking the second definition for trust tells). This objectively fits the criteria for a trust tell.

As such, the Team Mafia Mods have agreed to the following actions:

• Effective immediately, Elements has been modkilled in Gay Mafia IV. A flip will follow shortly, and the game will move into Night 1.
  
• Elements will flip his initial role, allowing Team "Team" Team to continue to score points if town wins Gay Mafia IV.
  
• However, due to the modkill, Team "Team" Team will receive a tiebreaker penalty, putting them at a disadvantage for scoring if they happen to tie with another team.
  
• Elements has been removed from the Team "Team" Team Private Topic.

We regret this situation has occurred. Remember to be sure not to skirt any site rules, even unintentionally. That doesn't fly during regular mafia games, and it won't fly in Team Mafia, where we're making extra sure to protect the integrity of the event.
