Throne of Eldraine looks beyond hype. I am very excited for this limited environment.

Garruk is also a powerful six Mana mythic that requires you to be in a couple specific colors. Evasion also makes him look very foolish since Mana for two bad wolves isn't a great rate.

He's def powerful, but a lot of the packrat nonsense is that it was a one card combo. If you're pressuring your opponent, Garruk looks rapidly less appealing for them.

At common

Ardenvale Tactician, Faerie Guidemother, Flutterfox, and Prized Griffin are all in white, with solid removal options and some more evasion at uncommon.

Mistford River Turtle, Steelgaze Griffin, Tome Raider, and Vantress Paladin exist for blue, with a very playable counterspell and some potent removal at common.

Black had highly coveted removal, asking with a playable mind rot in Reaper of Night, as well as marginally playable hand attack that punished bomby threats like Garruk.

Red eschews traditional evasion for speed, power, and efficient removal, as well as gets Ogre Errant at common for evasion purposes.

And finally green has Fierce Witchstalker and Garenbrig Paladin at common, along with Maraleaf Rider for lure purposes.

Like powerful mythic planeswalkers are kind of a normal thing in limited. If you are resolving a six Mana threat at any Rarity above uncommon, you should probably win the game. It's a bit annoying to deal with sure, but Garruk isn't any scarier them Liliana Dreadhorde General or Chandra, Awakened Inferno.

Jitte is a fucked up card. V fun to play with though

Oh goodness no Jitte only belongs in a format like Vintage where it's a total free for all. Jitte completely invalidates creature decks and ensures that the entire discussion is around who gets the first counter.

The issue with jitte is that if jitte is legal and you want to play a deck with creatures, you have to play jitte. You don't really get a choice.

Also people were upset about Garruk, but Outlaw's Merriment is waaaaay more insane. I got steam rolled by it.

The issue is that jitte kills aggro. If your jitte gets counters, then you win combat for the rest of the game. The floor is a free four life every turn, so aggro dies similarly even if it manages to find a 3 toughness threat.

How much have you played with the jitte in eternal formats?

Field of the dead is a dumb card and I miss field of ruin.

However if GB Aggroventure turns out to be good, it might eat FoD decks and I'm into that.

I don't think that combo is really ever the answer. I would prefer it if there was better nonbasic land hate, but in the meantime I'm tooling with reclamation to see if I can find a control deck I like playing.

My favorite thing about magic players is that no matter what happens, they will complain about how evil wotc is and how X is the final death knell of the game.

For all the people doomsaying Pioneer, I think they often forget the powerful decks and cards were often a product of weak interaction and a favorable metagame.

You get censor, quench, disallow, dovin's veto, and sinister sabotage as real countermagic.

You get thoughtseize, collective brutality, and duress as real discard.

You get assassin's trophy, abrupt decay, fatal push, and murderous rider as real kill spells.

You get supreme verdict, settle the wreckage, and languish as some real sweepers.

Fires is definitely the only deck of you don't count mono red, gruul aggro, Simic food, knights, temur reclamation, BG adventures, GW adventures, and Esper Doom Foretold, yeah.

I'm looking forward to cracking standard back open to see how reclamation works in this never new world.

OUaT has the issue of making decks extremely consistent, combined with the mulligan. It's a rather sensible ban in that light.

Does Approach of the Second Sun count as an alternate wincon deck? That's my favorite iteration of UW in recent memory

It's definitely not an alt win condition any more than "Elixer of immortality my sphinx's rev until you lose the will to play the game." is

The win condition is countering all their shit and killing the rest of it, not AotSS

Well you see most people try to win, but my alternative win condition is "not losing forever."

Definitely not wrong. For awhile i had monored built up. I'm fortunate that my collection has become deep enough that I can play archetypes i actually like in historic to finish my quests.

I just wish people would act less superior about the decks they enjoy playing. Especially in like competitive settings. It's so WEIRD to see people go to a tournament and whine about control. Especially when they're playing some sort of linear nonsense specifically because it wins really fast.

The other thing is that in real life when you 'go off' as a control deck people tend to concede. In arena you have to play to the bitter end because it seems like all my opponents are happy to go on for an hour until I draw my one dream trawler or whatever.

Oh classic blunder. Your wincon should just be Teferi and Sharknado
