The games are played by forum post. Chess is to correspondence chess as face-to-face mafia is to forum mafia. You make posts (and votes) in your game's forum thread, directing comments to players who may be offline at the exact moment you're leaving the comment and will read it later that day. Games last an average of one and a half months or so (though unlike face to face mafia, when you die, you are released).

Understanding the different timing format makes these other questions more obvious to answer: most moderators wouldn't forbid you from leaving a voice recording file in the thread occasionally, but you usually wouldn't want to (although images are often fun); and it's not particularly important when the game will start since you only need to be available to start it in the 1-2 day window around when it finds its final player to sign up (and the mod will check with you first to make sure you haven't gone on vacation).

By happenstance, the "marathon" portion of the site that schedules 1 hour games for specific times is open a few weekends a year, and it's open this weekend. Since most players prefer the longer format most of the time, it's usually disabled to keep that format exciting the times we do play it. If you want to try it out to see how you feel about playing mafia through the internet, it's a good idea, but if it's critical for you that a game is won or lost an hour after you started, marathons probably won't be open often enough that mafiascum becomes home to you unless you fall in love with the extended format as well.

There's lots of benefits to the forum format and forum friendly timing that are less obvious than the downsides. I hope you'll at least give it a shot.

Hey everyone. I hosted a weekly quiz and came up with a game called "Friday the 13th" where one team was Jason and the others teams didn't know who it was, They had to beat the Jason Teams score on the quiz round (which was also themed with music and video clips, and the questions had a narrative as they were trying to escape) and If Jason caught up with their score, any point over was considered a Kill and reduced the losing teams points even further.

Anyway, the point is, one of my regulars said the round had a "mafia" feel to it, and told me about this game, and to try it out. so... here i am.

As you have figured I am new to the site. I want to thank you for having me and I look forward to getting to know all of you and having as much fun as possible.

I found mafiascum.net searching the web on how to get better at mafia/wolf game. Found the wiki pages and from there eventually decided to join.

I play the wolf game variation of Mafia on another forum and I am trying to enhance my town/village game and we don’t play the game as often as I’d like so this looks like the perfect place to get better at.

Heya.

I've played Mafia for a good many years and was looking online for a place where I could sate this quench I got for more in-depth games

I don't think I'm particularly good at it, though I've played in a whole lot of different settings - forum-based like here, in person with cards or papers, via IRC/Discord, in the epicmafia site, and even through whatsapp. I think I'm more used to moderating the games just because it's the one thing other people tend not to do haha.
