No no, you had me in the thieves den to start and I searched. I came up with gold and that sword, however, I wasnt in the theives den, so im wondering if my search was valid.

At my current rules understanding only fish would interfere with his own run-away attempts but to the extent that I could affect it I would want to pass

that's not correct. There are cards that any player can play that would effect a run away roll.
