Mishmash Bracket Night

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Thu Jun 04, 2020 6:11 pm

Post by Haschel Cedricson »

Earlier tonight xofelf sent me this tweet:

I am absolutely the sort of person who would argue about rocking chairs vs recliners (recliners all the way, baby) so I decided to make our own bracket night with our first topic being suggested by the Mishmash Discord. So here's how it will work. Voting on the current match can be done with vote tags or bold text. Polls will be up for 48 hours. Please defend your vote!

Our first topic is Ways To Eat Potatoes. Here's the bracket:

Image

First up we have
(1) Mashed Potatoes vs (16) Boiled Potatoes.

Image
Mashed potatoes are versatile and delicious. Butter, garlic, gravy - the possibilities are endless with mashed potatoes.

Image
Boiled potatoes are one step away from being mashed, which gives them a different texture. Traditionally seasoned with herbs, the boiled potato is a common dish in Eastern Europe and South America.

Voting ends in (expired on 2020-06-07 01:11:36)

TBH I'm expecting the 1/16 matchup to be a blowout in favor of mashed.

My guesses of what the more popular things would be, balanced by my own personal opinions moving things up and down a few seeds.

Mashed takes it in a resounding victory!

To speed things up we will now be doing two matches at once.

(4) Tater Tots vs (13) Hasselback Potatoes

Image
Tater tots are a classic snack, perfectly shaped for dipping in any variety of sauces.

Image
Hasselback potatoes are one of the most aesthetic preparations and the thin slices crisp up to a delightful texture.

(7) Potato Salad vs (10) Gnocchi

Image
Potato salad is a staple of many picnics and comes in both a mayo-based version and a vinegar-based version.

Image
Gnocchi is not quite pasta and not quite a dumpling, but it is fantastic either way.

Voting is open until (expired on 2020-06-09 03:27:10)

I'm not sure how to vote in the second matchup because I loathe mayo-based salads but love vinegar-based salads. In retrospect having them share a bracket slot was stupid.

Tots
Hasselback looks like so much prepwork, and I ain't got the time for that when I want tasty taters.

Salad
Gnocchi is *fine* but it also has a weird texture, and there's so many different ways to make potato salad, and I like versatility.
Next time you visit I'm making you a Hasselback potato.

It's a close one, but gnocchi advances. Tater Tots doesn't disappoint and moves on as well.

Next we have
(3) Baked Potatoes vs (14) Latkes
and
(6) Potatos Au Gratin vs (11) Potato Skins
!

Image
Baked potatoes are fluffy, warm, and can be customized by a variety of "fixins".

Image
Latkes are a traditional Jewish dish and they are basically a delightful potato pancake.

In the other matchup...
Image
Potatoes Au Gratin, also known as scalloped potatoes, are made with cheese and a layer of breadcrumbs on top.

Image
Potato skins are a classic appetizer, loaded with many of the same "fixins" as a baked potato but designed for snacking.

I'm only voting if necessary to break ties, but potatoes au gratin are by far my least favorite dish in the entire bracket.

Because I know a lot of other people like them for some reason. Bracketology isn't an exact science, but I still try to not just make things up based on my own biases. Bracketology isn't
