Basics

1. This game takes place in this thread and the quicktopic you have been linked to -

Voting, Lynching and Deaths

4. Any voting action must be bolded -

There are things an ordinary, everyday and (most importantly) innocent couple talk about. You know, like how their day went, what they're going to have for dinner, plans for the weekend, who they think are vile murderers, etc., etc.

And then there are things those vile murderous couples talk about.

So, there came a time when Battle Mage was asked to tell the folk he shared this town with what he and his lover talked about all the time.

As the woobing continued the rest of the town was engaged in a bitter and polarising debate. One vote separated the two lynch candidates. It was Darla who could be the decider, but she wasn't voting so much as she was woobing.

For most of the town, there was not much left to say. After lynching the final Werewolves it seemed like they'd found something abnormal that could guide them to victory.

One by one, the votes piled on sekinj. But something was so wrong about it all. sekinj or her lover, neko2086, didn't smell like scum, they didn't sound like scum, they didn't look like scum and they didn't (presumably) taste like scum. I believe it was definitely possible and even probable that either of them would have made it to end game and even won before the timestamps were pointed out.

My comment about a lack of correlation between timestamps and alignment was an attempt to do

to salvage the game for them and it seemed to work to an extent. I definitely commend and appreciate those players who tried to ignore the timestamps and play in the 'spirit' of the game but I don't for a second blame those who wanted to test the theory. All blame is on me.

So again, sekinj, neko, armlx and Panda, I'm so sorry. You guys played really well and didn't deserve to be lynched as you were. I'm pretty sure most of the town will agree with me on that.

While the way it ended was depressing, I did enjoy modding this game and I hope that everyone enjoyed playing for the most part too. I give tremendous amounts of kudos to everyone who stuck through from start to end and to those who replaced in. There were a lot of instances of players giving this game so much effort even back in day one when orangepenguin replaced Firestarter, whose lover was already under a lot of fire and likely to be lynched. And obviously, the scum pairs that did everything they could despite the timestamps earn a lot of respect too.

There were also great moments from the town and their scum lynches didn't all come down to timestamps. Reading the towns' day talk, there were times when I saw ideas and sparks of cases that were right on the money. The discussion in the thread itself was consistently healthy and productive too, which was great to see.

About the setup, I was wondering if the game was balanced against scum. The town can win in 4 lynches while either scum team would need 8 mislynches

, and then there was also chance of that being a draw if every lynch had been of town. I do like the concept of the setup and if it were to run again (which I think would be cool) maybe it should be 6:6:12 instead, meaning each faction would need at least 6 lynches to win. Another possibility could be to keep the same numbers but give the scumteams a nightkill while crosskills would fail.

I thought the daytalking worked well. In retrospect, I don't think allowing even paraphrasing was a good idea. It detracted from the content in thread and turned the game into something other than Mafia. While the fake day talk sek/neko and armlx/Panda produced sounded pretty convincing, it was an unnecessary burden that didn't really enrich the setup and made a difficult game to win even harder.

I'd like some feedback about the deadline policy. I think it was necessary to contain this game and stop it growing to hundreds of pages, but I noticed some criticism of it earlier in the game.

Also, I've used activity requirements in other games I have/am modding and I'm still trying to figure if they're helping. How did you guys feel about them? Did they help? Did they make the game better? Worse? Did they have no effect?

I'd like to see the setup run again but I'm still not sure about the numbers. I like the idea of good townies not being punished by being killed at night but my feeling is with the current numbers, the scum teams have a much harder job despite their ability to act together. I'm also imagining situations like two townie pairs having been on lynches of both scum teams making them near confirmed and so hard for a single pair of either scum faction to win at end game. This sort of thing is hard for scum to avoid - they can't really stop a player from making a case short of never slipping up at all or being really good at misdirecting attention. The moment one pair is lynched the game becomes a heap harder for the other.

That said, most have agreed that either sek/neko or armlx/Panda could have made it to end game, so maybe I'm worrying too much.

How would scum use that? I can see it being useful in trying to bringing scum from the other faction down with you by forcing them to claim a lover (probably a buddy), but townies would counterclaim immediately. Claiming to be lovers with one of your buddies could be disastrous if there's any risk one of you would be lynched. Massclaim would be awesome for the town.

When you said you wanted this game to encourage and teach new players to play well, how did you see the lovers mechanic contributing to that? Was it being able to bounce ideas of someone else?

That's true. And I guess being able to pick who you'd rather go down with is a little better than having no choice about it, and leaves a bit of room for other possibilities as they might arise. But like you said, a massclaim would seem to boil it down to the same. Once you've claimed a lover there's essentially no point in ever going back on it.

4:4:12 looks good to me. 6 lynches for scum and 4 for town to win flawlessly, which sounds fair given the daytalking and what we saw scum achieve in this game.
