I mean, I can rerun scenarios to accrue what I need, but like why is that a requirement?

We just kind of house ruled that you can retire when you want if you've been trying to do your goal forever.
Taking a break from the site.

I believe Frosthaven is modifying retirement goals so that you start with an initial batch that should all be approximately equally doable, and then you unlock quests with harder to complete/more specific requirements as you advance.

I would suggest playing first if you can, but if you enjoy it, absolutely!

We have had it for more than a year and still regularly play even though we finished the main campaign long ago. There is just a lot of content there. There are still characters and secrets I haven't opened despite having probably 50+ sessions played.

I would suggest trying it out in computer form first

It's absolutely free via Vassal, and if you already have Table Top Simulator it is free with that. I'm playing it over TTS and think it is actually better digital as physical would be a huge space investment and I wouldn't have anyone to play it with.

There is also a computer version in the works. Pre-release is available on Steam and will include full content when game is out.

My group has recently started meeting again since we are all basically working from home and limiting outside world exposure.

We started
Clank! Acquisitions Incorporated
two weeks ago. I'm enjoying it quite a lot. The flavor is well written and funny, and I enjoy the light deck building play of Clank.

My only complaint so far is that the campaigns take a bit to set up and read through (maybe an additional 20 minutes depending on how chatty the group is being and how much sticker placement there is). Last night's game felt like it took us forever to actually get to the play. But it is pretty fast once everything gets rolling.

Overall, it's been one of the more fun legacy games I've played recently.

I think a work friend recently bought it so maybe I'll talk him into letting my girlfriend and I try it out with him one time.

As it is, I did get him into his first D&D campaign, so we can ruin each other's lives at this point.

I was thrown off by the sheer confusion I got from playing one game of Root (I remember my castle-thing got destroyed a few rounds in LOL)

Willing to try again after I try to understand the rules and strategies better.

I've only gotten to play Root once, but reviews I've seen (particularly the one from Shut up & sit down) mention that it tends to be better when everyone's still figuring out how their race/faction interacts with everyone else's as opposed to when everyone's got a solid grasp on the game - since it's first to 30 points wins the endgame can come down to just knocking down anyone who's particularly close until someone manages to shoot through the 30-point line. Playing with different player counts or new/unusual faction combinations w/ the expansion (and using the other side of the game board) seems like it would help a lot with that too though and I would definitely play it again if given the chance.

Root is the epitome of a game you have to play multiple times to get

And it evolves as you play because if in your group the vagabond seems to always win, players will team up against the vagabond player in the future

The only thing that is fairly unanimous opinion wise is that the Cats are underpowered and tbh quite unfun. They're the Big Bad Guy so everyone always makes them the enemy and they tend to lose cause of it.

What war games do you suggest in its place?

Personally, I kind of like Small World but definitely need the expansions.
