In my experience people are always WAAAAAAAY too liberal with guessing instead of passing.

We have a word that's been clued, but we don't know what it is and we disagree on which of the two options is better. If we pass, then we can potentially have the word re-clued to us on the final round, or not clued which will implicitly tell us to look at the options we are debating between. It also leaves words on the board that the opposing spymaster has to work around, and we also have the chance that the other team will guess the word.

Passing is usually the smart play here.

duck 5 - eagle (a bird), france (I thought duck was well known as part of French cooking), ham (another thing you eat), stock (like chicken stock), bat (things that fly/things you duck). We needed 6 words to win though and it was fairly likely the other team would win in the next turn, so I had to make it an infinite clue if I wanted to give the team a chance to guess the rest of the words in one go.

You did the best you could after we botched Duck right away; cook almost brought us back.
