Has anyone played Among Us?

I keep hearing about it, places. It's social deduction and you know mafia forum. I haven't tried it and would like to hear perspectives of mafia players about a social deduction game.

I actually just started! It seems a really neat game. It's Mafia but with interesting twists that genuinely cover for some of the basic setup's weaknesses.

I have played it a few times. It's been a lot of fun. My main concerns, on hearing the main premise, were of being able to break the game by staying together and having to play most of the game while muted not being fun.

Staying together breaks the game in principle (mostly-- sabotages can force players to split up), but it's boring, and people in my group fortunately haven't been taking the game seriously to develop game-breaking meta. This is, I suspect, true of most groups, though the replay value of the game might diminish once more people start to figure out that playing boring gives you a better chance of winning. But on the plus side, the game has a lot of customizable settings, and it's likely that some combination can be used to break whatever meta a group has developed.

As for not being able to talk in voice chat, well, I think that's a blessing in disguise, because it hinders coordination, prevents endless debate, and just speeds the game up in general. And the meetings where people are allowed to talk are frequent enough that it's not that irritating to not get to hang out with your friends.

Overall: would recommend. But take it with a grain of salt as I've only played it on two separate occasions, and only with a single group, and I would expect enjoyment to vary wildly based on the people you're playing with.

I've played a few times in public games, and they never seem to understand the concept of LYLO. Or the utility of town-directed kills which don't have perfect information. They often insist on skipping because they don't know who the imposter is, even when they're in LYLO. Staying in a single group seems difficult to coordinate and likely to go wrong, or at least, beyond a certain number of players it seems like that. I think best strategy is to just keep spamming emergency meetings and playing like nightless mafia. Possibly with some innocent children who have a visible task. Scum can try to counter this by sabotage to prevent emergency meetings, but that then can clear people, so tradeoffs.

Played games with two groups of people. People who ignore the no talking rule are the bane of my existence.

And yeah, each group gets its own meta. Some people can put together some great cases of anecdotal data from admins, cams, task bar etc. There's also some really great map specific strats for Imposter, like lab lights jumping on sky base, and stack lights killing on default map. Got to play with mish mash scummers a couple of days ago and that was fun. Just ask for games on the MS discord, I am always keen to play if people are looking to.

It's neat. I think if town plays mathematically perfect it's near impossible to for scum to win but also people probably won't do that

Don't play with pubs then. I think enough of us are getting the game that this shouldn't be much of a challenge.

just treat pubs like you're playing on EpicMafia, or pretend you're with bots of different intelligence variants. advanced practice mode with 8 player default due to people leaving.

but yeah the game's great with a proper group, I'd be down to play in some MS game nights on the discord

Got mobile version because it was free. Played the 3 maps it has to learn all the tasks in free play. Will give main game a try later. App says it has adds since it was free but I ain't seen an add yet. Will update you on how bothersome they are when I see them more. Controls in mobile only slightly janky. Might snag on steam if I feel like dropping 5 bucks.
