I vote we refuse to give Elbirn the title of Meme Police on the grounds that he requested the title "Something in a Similar Vein". Clearly an unforgivable faux pas.

Also, nom Nancy for "Never Lynch"

1. She's a strong town player who is incredibly good at towntelling and hard to mislynch.
2.

3. Subject: no deadlines mafia [game over]

The last might seem a little offensive because she ended up being wrong, but it's just the first example to come to mind. It's more that Nancy locks down her townreads, trusts herself, and never lets anyone bully her away from her opinions, which can be both good and bad.

for Boonskiies might make sense if the BooneyToonz games had any connection to Looney Tunes, aside from the name. As far as I can tell, there's one game that had pictures of Looney Tunes characters in the votecounts and nothing else in any of the games that's in any way related. I quite like the BooneyToonz pun, it sounds nice as a name for a game, but the pun is of course not a good basis for a title. So to sum up, no.

Personally?

I have made a habit of coming into the endgames of Dann's town games and expressing scumreads on him, which RC also did just now in a game I modded.

Additionally, Dann is very town as scum, and the resultant paranoia means he's frequently misread and pushed late game regardless of alignment.

Not sure if RC has another reason to add to it, and from my reasons alone it's a pretty weak title. But it's a pretty weak title that I like, so I'm gonna throw whatever weight I have behind it.

I think it applies as a fairly generic scum move (asking for a protown action in a way to get it it shot down instead of actually considered). Regardless, probably a discussion to take to md.

I disagree that faking masons is objectively bad play, although perhaps the consistency with which mastina does it could make it so. It’s a more extreme version of an arbitrary townread, which I’ve seen used to good effect. It’s objectively good for scum mastina, and theoretically has the effect of lowering the kill rate on a high power slot (mason) while raising the kill rate on a low power slot (neighbor).

The risk is also low yield: mastina and her neighbor become ‘unlynchable’ but that just reduces the odds from n/m to n-1/m-1 for a scum lynch.

TL;dr I don’t think you can say it’s objectively bad play, regardless of how annoying you personally feel it is.

Nom Pink Ball for The Power of Love

First, it's a reference to a song I like. Bite me.

Second, Pink Ball is an incredibly positive person. In the Alipine game that just ended, he multiple times organized a sit down and feel good session that derailed the game from going toxic.

Third, Pink Ball in that same game managed to turn the positive emotions and gratitude from his appreciation pages into a crazy strong shield that saw him into the endgame with little suspicion from town despite being the only claimed investigative in a situation with several conftown and a really tiny mislynch pool.

tl;dr Pink Ball endgamed through the Power of Love.

Its like titling someone "obvtown". That would be a bad title. Literally the same logic applies.

I'm not saying we shouldn't title him, just not this.
dannflor has been in more games than just this
him being a deepwolf is somewhat of a meme at this point, i don't think alisae v pine was even the largest influence on this
Yeah, sure. But that doesn’t address any of ari’s points. It’s a meme title that’s not really special enough for what DANNFLOR (WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME) is. On an unrelated note, my phone now autocorrects DANNFLOR to be in all caps.

I don't see it as mean spirited. Not good? Sure. I thought the change away from Smooth Criminal to people tried was bad. I just don't really personally support letting you switch back because you don't like the new one anymore because it feels like asking for a title, tbh.

I also don't feel strongly enough about that to oppose the switch.

P En G with the spaces is my preference based on the phonetics.

Nom Dann for
Sheep In Deepwolf's Clothing

I think this captures the meme of "Dann always being accused of being a deepwolf" better, captures the cute-n-cuddly "I don't want to lynch Dann, even though he might akshually be scum" vibe I get from his scumplay, and captures the fact that he's basically the sacrificial lamb for which we blame all of the issues with AliPine. (DANNFLOR, WHY HAVE YOU BETRAYED ME?)

In post 1492, Volpe14 wrote:"Schrodinger Wolf" can kind of give the impression more of "You never know if Dann is scum or not until you see the flip" that although similar isn't exactly what we might be gunning for here in my opinion.

The point we're looking for in my opinion is that Dann can be town read but there is that "I town read Dann but he might be a deepwolf".

"Schrodinger Wolf" directly more references someone you aren't sure about the alignment until the flip, that although like I said it's a similar concept, I don't think it's exactly what we were going for.

I think rather than "You never know Dann alignment" as "Schrodinger Wolf" might indicate, the pun is "Dann is probably town but you never know, he might be a deepwolf". Therefore you never know for certain if he's the "deepwolf" or not until he's flipped, rather than not having a solid read on him (since I think most of the time he's just town).
Agreed. I'm not opposed to Schrodinger's Wolf, but I don't feel it has the whole of the meaning.

Disagree. As I see it the mod to the meme is there for people who would appreciate the meme, but to the uninitiated it just says that Dannflor is friendly and polite, even when wolfing. Which... is pretty true. Dannflor is one of the most consistently chill players on site and I think referring to the fact that he’s crazy easy to get along with enhances the title, not detracts from it.

Eh, honestly I don’t have a problem with rewarding civil disobedience. If he actually did request the ban and was turned down it seems like he did due diligence to try to resolve the issue within the rules and then resolved the issue the only way that was still available.

I also don’t really think it sets a bad precedent as the specific behavior it’s rewarding is not possible anymore AND someone looking to emulate the behavior would have to get banned in the first place and then appeal, come back, and still have people care enough about them to want to title them.

OTOH, I don’t really care enough to look up whether he did attempt to achieve his aims through proper channels.

Fence, prepare to be sat on.

Yeah, but even assuming her beliefs align perfectly with the current speaker, which is not something I care to investigate, AND pops is pro politicians in general, what happens if the next Speaker is an entirely different person?

I just personally feel that any title tied to a real life position for which the connotations could (and frequently do) rapidly swing around is at best risky. People who feel like Pelosi is a favorable comparison would not necessarily feel the same about Gingrich, for example.

PEdit: I kinda like that one, tbh.

Now, before you default to "Shut up, Jingle." or "You're an idiot, Jingle." or "Underwear go inside your pants, Jingle." this is at least an 80% serious nomination.

Nom RadiantCowbells for
Alien Ant Framer
.

Does RadiantCowbells need a new title? I think the answer to this is yes. Over the years, he's had several, and Smooth Criminal was arguably the most fitting. I'm not arguing a return to Smooth Criminal (he's good at scum, but I can't remember the last time he went an entire game without being wagoned out of paranoia at least once) and I'm not saying Solid Criminal is a bad shift over that as it fits the newbells better than smooth criminal does now. OTOH, Solid Criminal just doesn't feel special to Raybells in the way that it could. It's true, in that I'm fairly certain that Raybells is at least mostly solid and good at playing scum, but there are any number of solid scummers that play scum well. It's a title that fits, instead a special title. It also completely ignores that Raybells isn't good at scum at the expense of his other play.

So let's examine my suggestion:

Alien, in mafia terms, is a role that is very strong as both town and scum. In fact, in smaller games Alien makes sense as the majority (or even entirety) of the power for a game. Alien, as a faction, is a shorthand term for a scumteam that is so powerful that they need a significant nerf (a single nightkill per game). Both of these show the strength of the seal as both factions, a capability of shifting the game to win as either faction nigh singlehandedly.

Framer, similarly, is a role that is difficult to play well. You have to figure out how to get a cop to target your choice or accurately figure out that a cop will be investigating a town player. More importantly to the title though, when applied correctly, Framer can get a lynch on even the strongest town player when it would normally be nigh impossible. This is a clear reference to RC's ability to push through lynches through sheer force of personality. It doesn't hurt that Raybells has been known to fake a guilty to get a lynch from time to time (and isn't that exactly what a Framer does, mechanically?).

Ant, here is a reference to the ability of ants to lift weights much larger than their own, and also the propensity of some ants to scream at you while suicide bombing out of trees. Actually, no it isn't, but I needed to include it for the pun so it stays.

The core of this title, however, is much simpler. Alien Ant Farm sings the song Smooth Criminal. Smooth Criminal was RC's title for like, decades. This isn't a username pun. This isn't an avatar pun. This isn't even a behavioral pun. This, right here, is our chance to award a title that is a title pun. And it fits.

Nom wooper for Oompa Loompa.

I’m fairly certain we as a site kidnapped him from the strange upside down kingdom of Aus in a very wonka like fashion to force him to work in our factory, managing the gtkas, replacements, open marathon group, and scummies. I don’t think it’s a good enough title to replace his main’s, but I think his contributions are worthy of an alt title. Also, this might get him to sing parables while he works.

I like making the fantasy league connection explicit, but I get the point that it’s a bit on the nose. I’d be fine with Mr Commissioner as a secondary option though.

(To be clear, I’m also not involved in any of the fantasy leagues and am going to pm someone who is to see if they can bring perspective, since I honestly don’t know how that shit works.)

Today will be stricken from the public memory. We shall never again reference Firebringer being right about anything.

Is the Ultimate really necessary for Ali’s nom? Cosplaying Assassin sounds stronger imo and I don’t know that the danganronpa reference is truly integral. Like I don’t think specifically danganronpa when I think Maria. I think anime, sure, and multiple accounts, but I don’t think it’s integral to her as much as the rest of the title is.

I’d also support
Janus
as a nod to two faced without being as insulting, her membership in the ms pantheon, and because of janus’ ties to duality. Not really sure the Roman aspect fits with her character though, tbh.

Madame Masque is a marvel villain whose main shtick is manipulation. Notably she has multiple versions of herself running around and is functionally the leader of the Marvel mafia, which could be a reference to Maria's skill as antitown, although I'll admit I'm not sure the Marvel angle fits her.

I don't get the reference but I hope to soon once I finally play it. I agree with the reasoning that this fits more than Innocent Child.
"Did nothing wrong" has a strong association with historical figures involved in genocide.
That is not the first thing I thought of when I see that title.
Even if the association isn’t immediate for everyone I kind of feel like the fact that it exists for some people is enough to make it a bad title choice. I also feel like we should be able to find a reference that encapsulates the gist of that as “evil person who appears perfectly innocent” is a fairly common trope.

FWIW, XLO has been a catch all for situations that were either LYLO or MYLO in the past and doesn’t carry the same connotations since it’s literally using x in the algebraic sense where you can replace it with anything.

Also ELO has far stronger associations with the band which kinda makes it a shitty title for skitter imo.

Not really concerned about stripping titles from people who siteflaked as a priority as them having siteflaked means their title isn’t popping back up on new posts. If an active user has a problem title it should 100% be brought up and addressed though.

Basically, I don’t think trawling through the user list for things that people could find offensive is a reasonable request on mastina’s time when all of those posts are probably archived anyway. (Kept in the museum closet, to borrow Ari’s metaphor).

If a title is inappropriate and is being seen the report function should be more than adequate.

Edit: I got drunk and noticed I used the wrong their.

The event of "rolling cult leader six times straight" isn't particularly memorable (unless you have a fondness for math), nor something that he had any choice over (unless we count as not signing up for the game as a choice). Strike two.
It doesn't fit his personality. Strike three.
Eh.

First of all, the two titles are vaguely related, it just takes a bit of knowledge of the players in question to figure that out. Both of them signed up for basically every game with cults in them for a long period of time because both of them like cults a lot. Drew randed cult leader a ton, Korina has actively campaigned to get more cult games going. But both of them undoubtedly have a large fondness for cults and cult games.

(For reference, Drew was also in: viewtopic.php?f=84&t=81570, viewtopic.php?f=4&t=81744, viewtopic.php?f=56&t=81273, all of which had cults. Him being a cult leader via gamblers fallacy was a topic in at least one of them.)

Second, it probably wouldn't be memorable if Drew hadn't leaned into the curve. From a recent game:

Subject: Redneck Mafia GAME OVER PARTNER!
Doctor Drew wrote:Also, obligatory......'Swear I am not 3p this time guys' post.
As it stands, it is fairly memorable as evidenced by the pattern Hectic brought up starting literally a year ago and Hectic still remembering it.

I'm not a big fan of the title, but I don't think the grounds on which you're arguing against it seem particularly strong.

AFAIK, the rules just say you can't share information given in speezy outside of speezy. If you link to speezy, only people with speezy access would be able to follow the link anyway.

The relevant section of the rules only makes things explicit for sitechat, but the same principles should apply elsewhere:

Subject: Forum Rules and Guidelines
mith wrote:
Speakeasy and Get to Know A Scummer Content
  1. The Speakeasy and GTKAS forums are designed to be semi-private and are not listed in search engines. Do not share personally identifying information found from either of these forums in Site Chat. This includes name and photos. When in doubt, ask the person you’re talking about privately first.
  2. Sharing links and discussing The Speakeasy/GTKAS generally are both acceptable.
  3. Please understand that The Speakeasy and GTKAS are very limited in the protection they provide and generally the Site Chat Moderators and Discussion Moderators do not exist to stop rumors, stories, etc. that originated in The Speakeasy/GTKAS.
With that said, lacking the context of the original speezy thread, it sounds like something that is both personality representative and lighthearted fun. I'd throw my hat behind it.

In fairness mine is an event title.

I disagree that the basis of the title being username based invalidates the title when there are other connections to be drawn though.

pffft. Mastina thinks I'm too entertaining to warn about being off topic.

On the other hand:

Nom Nero for Last Centurion.

I have reticence based on the fact that it is a Doctor Who reference and Nero doesn't particularly strike me as a Doctor Who person. However, I think the title fits despite the Doctor Who reference and it's not like the storytelling concept is unique to that storyline.

It's a nod to both sides of his username (Nero being a Roman emperor and Cain being the first murderer, cursed to wander the earth, protected from being murdered and functionally immortal in some popular mythologies (Cain implies he actually was a Roman Centurion at some point in the movie He Never Died, for example.). It also references his longevity and the fact that he's been pretty constant throughout ms's history while still remaining the same NC we've known for years. While others have come and gone, Nero has been here, playing mafia and watching the site change around him, a remnant of a forgotten age.

Also, it's less potentially insulting than While Rome Burned as it doesn't imply Nero was passive in the face of the collapse of MS.

While he's far from the only geriatric player onsite, and while the title is partially a username reference, this particular title feels like it's unique to him and not generically applicable to everyone and is more than just a cheap username pun, in that it feels like it might work specifically because of being not one of those traits but a combination of both.
This is pretty much what I wanted to get across.

With that said, I agree with reck that it’s not a perfect fit, and would welcome any attempts to build on it to make a better title.

I really kinda like “The Grey” over Gandalf as it also invoked a “that’s probably an old guy yelling at the kids to get off his lawn” vibe. I would probably support both.

The tldr on the doctor who reference is that at some point
Spoiler:
a companion gets left behind in Roman times, becomes a centurion and then waits two thousand years As a night watchman to reconnect with the doctor, doing nothing to change history. Later: role play jokes.

There is actually a guideline against titling people who are too new. That guideline is vague and arbitrary, as are most title fairy rules, because vague and arbitrary is exactly what the title process is.

With that said, I feel like Noraa is probably well established enough to deserve a title if there's a title to fit her, but neither the Tsunami thing nor the Conftown thing really encapsulate her imo. I could definitely see something along the lines of cub given that my impressions of Noraa have been that she plays up gimmicks and cuteness a lot, and not in an annoying way. She also seems to have a habit of talking about herself in the third person? iirc someone compared voting noraa to kicking a puppy and she does like to play up her innocence, so I could see a possible title coming from that angle.

The presumption being that Norwee would auto reject the title.

There's always the chance that Norwee would want the title on the grounds that he also thought the joke was funny, which would also kind of invalidate the whole "It's mean" aspect of the complaint. I'm not saying Norwee would like the title or accept it, but in his shoes I definitely would accept the title, especially given the fact that if we ever changed the default titles he would be able to keep Survivor. And I think it satisfies enough of the criteria to actually make sense as a title for Norwee.

tl;dr: the person whose opinion matters on whether it's mean or not is Norwee, and if he doesn't like the title he definitely has the option of refusing it.

Wouldn't it be?

Norwee would be the only person on site with a special title that was the same as the normal title. It's a reference to something that happened in site history, and from what limited interactions I've had with Norwee I think there's a decent chance he'll find that funny too.

I'm not saying it's a perfect title, but personally I think it's at least worth offering to him, and I just wanted to explain why I think that.

The context is that he requested a title, got told not to request a title, and then requested a title again months later. All of this happened a significant amount of time ago (the last occurance was like March, I think) and he's contributed to the thread in good faith since then. Also:

Sarcastically? People beating each other up in a cage.

If mastina actually wanted to use it? A fairly generic title, signups to try to get it, and voting to see who fits it best.

I think title fairy events are on hiatus though.

Mostly it was a joking response to Nancy though.

I think the italicized version looks the best, but I would say this is one of those situations where all of them meet the bar for good so which specific form of twirls hair is best left as Y's preference imo.

Edit: This is entirely inaccurate. The precedent is actually that multiple good suggestions lead to mastina offering all of them and was set with monty, although mastina did say if someone asked for a capitalization based title change she would likely grant it in reference to Noraa's title.

Nom Gypyx for
Complex Draft
.

I've consistently seen solid setups come from Gypyx, but they all have one thing in common. They're all super complicated. Even operating within the bounds of 'Normal' Gypyx routinely pushes the line and does things no one expects. Also, something something Draft Mafia.

Sure. So did skygazer, and a bunch of other people.

But I think Complex Draft is a title that IS unique to Gypyx because of both his propensity to complex setup design and his work with the drafting mechanic for his game and wouldn't fit you or skygazer or whoever else because of that. It's the overlapping of the two that made me want to nom him for it.

I think you described Gypyx better than mastina in that post, Jake.
Noraa wrote:Gypyx is definitely known for his complex games. I dont think when I see complex draft though, I ever think of him. The mechanical puzzle part which is what I get from complex draft, is not there.
sorry this is late too.
I'm not sure how it's possible to have a well designed setup with loads of power and not have to account for the interactions as a big mechanical puzzle, tbh.

I'm around if people have specific questions about the title, but really I'm not sure what more there is to say from me. I would definitely be open to hearing alternative suggestions though, as I'll admit it's not a slam dunk title.

Does Gypyx have an affinity with jigsaw puzzles I'm unaware of or is that just a play on the complexity of his setups?

Not only is he the worthiest guy I can think of for a portal reference title (I do not support those lightly) every time I end up in one of his mod PTs (whether as a spectator or for other nefarious purposes) I hear the MS version of the Portal song at the end of the first game (This was a triumph, I'm making a note here; HUGE SUCCESS etc. Rest of lyrics on request). He approaches setup design with the same passion that GlaDOS has for scientific research and his games are barely full when he starts thinking of the next one. He also likes to subvert player expectations in his games (Tenet, SAW) which is perfect for the Is A Lie moniker.

Just my two cents.
I wasn't sold, but then I read this and now I like it.

But is Cakez old enough to have played the original portal? Not to make anyone feel old but I think he was like 6 when it came out lol.

I demand that we give cakez the title and also require he get the rest of the portal achievements, including portal 2 and the aperture labs vr game.

I would like to point out that Pie's explanation of the word corporeal misses that subtext that it's bodily as in having a physical form not specifically a human body, but imo that kind of adds to the fitting nature of the title as this is a forum and all of our presences are non physical in nature. I don't know about e's personality well enough to understand if the title fits them, but I would assume it does based on the people who have nth'd.

FWIW, I think titling Nancy based on her username being Nancy Drew doesn't really fit. iirc when we made Little Grey Cells she mentioned that she doesn't identify much with the mystery genre (It's a Hercule Poirot reference) and there's a lot about her that is much more iconic.

I know it's not really done on general principal, but if there's a potential legitimate issue with a suggestion, the nominated member should be able to speak up BEFORE the offer is officially approved in order to save discussion time for more productive thoughts.
Generally, yes, you can interact with a discussion about a prospective title for you with anything along the lines of "I wouldn't accept that title."

I'm pretty sure both RC and I have done so in the past. The guideline is more along the lines of it being in poor taste to say "I really like that title for me".

In this particular case I don't think the title has much to do with emotional manipulation and is more just that Nancy is an emotive person in general. It speaks more as an empathy thing than a mafia playstyle thing, but that could be personal bias and if she doesn't like it I agree that she should weigh in to say so.

I think inno sense is more representative of her play but not that inno scent is an overall better title.

Still support recommended for you based on the prolific use of songs/youtubs/gifs

I can confirm that to the best of my knowledge Nancy has never kidnapped scummers to hunt them for sport on her private island.

In post 3815, Jake The Wolfie wrote:*with no better alternative

What you're missing here is that there is a better alternative that she deserves, because it better encapsulates her as a whole, instead of one very specific thing she does.
Responding to this as all of the related posts to cut down on wasted space:

I’m not really missing the context. I’m aware that you think inno scent is the better title, and that may well be true but that doesn’t really change my stance.

Given:

A. The recent trend of offering multiple titles as options.
B. The potential for a person with a title to receive a new title.
C. The number of titles that have come based on other people seeing/workshopping suggestions.

The argument that a title shouldn’t be considered because it’s not good enough is a poor reason to shut down a title.

The argument you elaborated into: that inno scent encompasses a larger portion of Nancy’s personality, is a good argument to prefer that title.

For clarity’s sake, I don’t think any of the jake feedback on the Nancy title has been out of line and he’s definitely engaging in good faith here. If it came across that way that was unintentional.

What Nero said is titling, as in the process of receiving a title.

That's fair, I'm just reminding LLD that it's generally seen to be in poor taste to be overly involved in the creation of your own title. I don't disagree that she deserves a new one, but think it will be more meaningful if it comes from the community than if it comes from LLD guiding the community.

Anyway, I don't actually object to anything she's posted about the titles here. I think strength in numbers has promise both as a reference to her plurality and her attempts over the years to bring the vulnerable members of the site together, but admittedly I don't know her very well and was vaguely hoping people who do would weigh in on that.

It kinda sounds like implying LLD is gonna run away from conflicts to me (like it's a portmanteau of Stand and Fight and Fight or Flight) which is not at all how I see her. I don't think I see a world where LLD backs down easy at all, even when it puts her own well being at risk.

Not sure if anyone else would take it that way though.

I’ve been led to believe this should be an natural process, but this doesn’t really seem it.
The key difference between this case and the cases you’re referring to is that the vast majority of the latter were functionally “I’d like a title” “Okay let’s try to think up something cute and fluffy which can apply to half the user base” vs “my title no longer fits me” “okay here are some ideas that might.”

I like all three current noms, but I think any best LLD title is going to feature defense or protection and wonder if anyone who’s a bit more creative than me could tailor one or more of them to that angle.

I feel like there was room for a pun here.
Nominate Mastina for “There Was Room for a Pun Here”.

I think False Prophet is more a reference to who Mastina used to be on site more than who she is and frankly I think she deserves to be recognized on the basis of the here and now. I’m not opposed to false prophet as a (site) historical reference, I just feel that as Daffy Duck once said “My memes are no longer relevant to the youths.” And that mastina has changed a lot as a person since the days of mastin2 and we can do better than a reference to that.

Mastina herself is a pun maker of no small skill and this is a pretty blatant reference to her preference in giving people titles that include puns.

She's modded like 34 newbie games by my count, many of which have cat-centered flavor.

Agree. Not only is "Study in X" choppy imo, it's less complete contextually and doesn't have the artistic connotations. It just feels like removing an aspect of the title for no real purpose.

We could maybe emphasize the pun with an Excel-lence if people aren't noticing it.

Fwiw the intersection of modding and pagetopping reminds me more of people who read to children in libraries or book clubs in general than the “really interesting book” angle of page turner. Admittedly, I’m not a music person so pagetyrner doesn’t immediately scream helpful. if alianna is notably musically oriented, particularly piano oriented, I’d support that idea a lot more.

Like, I think pagetopping is a good start, but there should be something more to make it special to alianna.
