Protip: when townies insult they aren't so direct with it, its often more snide, more sarcastic you know? Something like wow I really thought x but then you did z. I suspect it has something to do with the itching feeling in the back of their head, maybe the guy I'm talking to is just wrong!town. It's that little doubt that makes them not want to be hurtful.

Also you need to show a little more escalation if you are going with the noncompliant route, if your goal is to start a fire and refuse to put it out, you have to build there a little. You can't immediately play non compliant, that just reveals your hand too much.
