meh. I think it’s one of those games where if you’ve played it once, you’ve basically gotten all the gameplay out of it that you’re going to get. Playing it again is just more of the same. It’s also one of those games that I think are meant to entice non-board gamers towards board games because it’s easy and casual, but I feel like you could just pick a better game for that if you’re trying to introduce friends to board games. All around not my thing.

Yeah, I don't remember who got it for my fiancee, but it was a Christmas gift. It might be good for when you're drinking.

The other game we played again was Marvel Villainous.

Still liking that game, and it looks like I'll be trying Disney Villainous when my sister comes up in a few weeks.

Anyway, what we learned is that Ultron can beat Hela, Hela can beat Thanos and Taskmaster can beat Killmonger.
I've only made one good post, and don't you dare accuse me of doing it again.

Oh, hey, played Dominion at last. It was good. I believe that just leaves Brass Birmingham, which is intimidating, the weird Justice League Road Trip game that my parents got me years ago, and Cosmic Encounters left to play.

played Power Grid with my group
Seems like a fun enough game. I think with serious players, the constant calculations would be a slog and really slow down the gameplay.
The randomness of the powerplant deck kinda sucks though and plays a big role in the outcome

It's a game with a phase that's literally called Bureaucracy; the constant calculations are a core part of it.

I describe Power Grid as a 2-3 hour game where only the last turn or two matters, and it's only a little hyperbolic. It has strong rubber-banding built in, so you have to really screw up (e.g. buying the highest-ranked plant because it's the highest-ranked, esp. if it's wind-powered) to get knocked out of contention.
Everything you say and do matters. People will respond in ways you may never see. May those responses be what you intend.

I think the experience let me know I don't really like heavy games too much
although the last turn "can" be exciting, I don't think the hope of a good last turn is worth sitting through 2-3 hours of either doing endless predictive math. Or, better still, waiting for other people to finish doing endless predictive math

if your group doesn't take it seriously enough to bother with the math, there are just more fun games out there

I've also come to realize I have issues with 'not playing the game optimally', in that I don't enjoy games much if people aren't making best or near best plays

yep that's Power Grid

I wouldn't judge all heavy games by this one, I guess. (by which I mean "play more Argent")

This is an interesting question. One couple we play with is frustrating on two fronts of this. One of them is constantly scrolling instagram during play and barely pays attention when it is their turn. The other person works out the effects of all possible plays to the Nth degree on their turn.

I've found both styles can be very frustrating for me. I mostly just want to keep a game moving (particularly if it takes hours to play), and want people to have fun rather than being focused solely on winning. I also acknowledge I shouldn't probably try to force my optimal game environment onto my friends, so.....

Yeah, I don't mean thinking through a play for 30 minutes to calculate the best value option as if someone had written an AI script.
For me its more like trading with someone in Catan that will essentially win the game so that you can build a town next turn
or letting me have a game winning power plant in Power Grid for 5 above the sticker price (there were 3 people in this auction with me)
or building your engine towards 11 and 12 rolls in a dice game

I would express more agreement if this didn't describe me in the tournament I'm playing rn. I'm playing a game where I'm used to having, like, 90-second timers in a different implementation. Without the timers some of my turns have taken north of 15 minutes and I'm getting heckled for it :(

Part of the issue is that it's a simultaneous action game. In a sequential game, not working your strategy out on other players' turns seems inefficient for you on a strategic level, never mind a time-management level.

What kills me is when I try to explain to people how they are just letting others win, and they still do it anyhow.

Power Grid is a game that I have not played. Though, I did play the original Disney Villainous a bit ago.

Was fun, though, my niece really needs to learn to follow rules and not storm out when something happens to her. That's more of a four year old problem than a game problem, though.

Yeah, in Hi Ho Cherry-O we have to stop playing with her if she cheats, so she'll learn. I said she was 4 but she's about a month short of her fourth birthday, so, she's still learning.

Not really mixed. I agree with most of what is said about the game in here, I just think it's a really good game. It's one of my favorite heavier games and I think the big math problem in the last few turns is fun. I play with the accountant league and it's a good time. I def didn't buy the game myself because outside of that group, I can't get it to the table.

I am enjoying Villainous, would play it on Tabletop Simulator, maybe I'll eventually get the Disney one with the expansions myself.

It's like...incredibly good for a licensed game. I think there are some balance issues but typically they are solved by bullying lol

From what I hear, the one real balance issue is that the Queen of Hearts is entirely too easy to win as, but we had Ursula, Jafar and Maleficent in our game, so I have no personal experience with it.
