In post 104, schadd_ wrote:0.6 of the catfit points here come from the dual presence of some sort of plucked sound as well as a typical harpsichord sound. maybe i'm not familiar with all the ways you can play a harpsichord or maybe there are multiple performers but i am compelled to visualize somebody mashing on the keys and then like instantly fluttering over to the bare rear of the instrument where they trill away on the strings directly.
my thinking was in one part the pairing. When one thinks of bassoon and harpsichord pairings (granted, most probably don't at all) you get some sort of Baroque ensemble music as probably the only possible genre fit. I took the dissonance between the title and the actual performance a little different from yourself. I found it quite interesting that if you listen to the lines that both the harpsichord and bassoon play, they follow eachother quite closely in most places. What makes the duet interesting to me is that by phasing in and out of unison, it creates a really great tapestry that fits together better than if they were actually in unison

Also, this is a single player on each instrument. The symmetry I liked is that both musicians are playing unusually. You picked up on the plucking harpsichord. There is also a lot of note bending and growling coming from the bassoon. Feeds in well with the personalities you were conveying to the lines.

I will check it out

In my previous life, I played bassoon
I had this track on a CD that I played the heck out of back in HS
although I underappreciated it at the time

Also, note bending on a bassoon is super easy. It's harder to keep in tune lol
Had a part in a song that was meant to represent a drunkard and I got to play all kinds of bendy out of pitch for that

I naively didn't expect you to think so hard about the incongruence and more just think "wtf are they doing to those instruments?"

I don't know if you remember, but this is actually the submission I changed.
Believe it or not, I was going to submit Tanacious D's "Tribute" as a laugh because I really enjoy the fugue section too much.

But then I remembered the Cibo Matto cover of Aquas de Marco, and went back to listen. It's obviously not as good the submitted version. I think a part of it is that neither of them speak Portuguese (or at least aren't native speakers), so this probably makes it a lot harder to be playful with the song. Finding the Elis and Tom version was awesome. They are so playful with eachother singing it, she's audibly laughing while she singing parts of it. Still brings me joy listening to it. Anyway, really glad the Walrus got me to discover it.

Also overall, this was a fun batch. I really enjoyed quite a few of the submissions.

I'll cherish my week at the top. It's mostly downhill from here. Maybe one more chance in the top 3. But I have three or so songs that could all be near the bottom.

I was very tempted to use my oldie status to troll everyone into listen to some Dave Mathews Band because Carter Beauford is ridiculous and he should be appreciated

I went with something that wouldn't be represented. I played bass for three years in HS, and theres something that can't really be described about playing in a bass drum line. The feeling of 5 people playing one instrument is just so amazingwhen it gels. It's almost an out of body experience. I cannot imagine how sweet it would be to pull off some of the riffs in this piece. I really wish this hadn't been recorded on a camcorder.
In post 201, schadd_ wrote:this drumming style has a bit of a stench for me, like its the sort of thing that only happens at football games and in the army and whatever
If you haven't watched any drum corps shows, they have some beautiful music and amazing visuals. It's a shame to lump them into football and jingoism

excited to listen to the rest of the entries, I like a good drum. I think it was the middle of the third song last night I heard the sound of water splashing and though "that's an odd acoustic choice for this song". But it was instead water sloshing out of my kitchen sink drain onto the floor.

Also, don't mean to be thread sniping, but was anyone planning on doing a WALRUS after the Grande Finale?
I'd really like to run one but 1) it would have to go on hiatus in June so mayhaps waiting until later would be better and 2) I can't do the community engaging Discordy stuff so it would be total forum engagement. I do think I have mechanisms to take advantage of this though

Thanks again for running this, it was a blast
And thanks for rest of group for some great songs and fun times. If I had a music aggregator in use, my library would def have expanded

Still not sure why I'm ambiguous, when chickadee was never guessed.
I suppose its a different meaning than what I'm thinking

I'll probably startup my walrus in early/mid July
Formatting will have staggered submissions per round instead of a lump submission before it begins
And forum banter will be a major component of scoring.

it was an accident that they were all final fantasy songs
or an accident that you submitted them to the walrus?
