HEART is a no-brainer; cardio pretty much means HEART as a prefix (cardiology).
TRAIN is definitely arguable, as a verb - cardio exercise could be part of a training regimen.
Cardio helps extend LIFE.
A DRILL instructor could instruct recruits to do cardio.

Nothing else really comes to mind?

I like Train the best of the three not-Heart guesses.

I figured Drill was more of a stretch than Life, although it could just be that Life and Heart are intertwined enough in general that it's hard to clue for one without the other?

Cardio exercises are definitely not my strong suit, so if DRILL actually means something there specifically (or for intense exercise in general), then yeah, I'd give it the nod over LIFE.

I wouldn't go so far as to call LIFE a second order clue (where you need HEART to get there at all - those sorts of connections I try to avoid whenever possible), but "extending LIFE" is admittedly on the vague side of connections.

Agreed that TRAIN should be our next guess.

Hoo boy.

Ties and PANTS are both part of formal outfits.
A STRING could be tied.
Ties and PINS are both ornamentation. (Lapel pins, specifically.)

He used the ambiguous form instead of a specific form (necktie, bowtie), which makes me think the ambiguity is intentional because STRING is one of the two.

We're missing three words; opponents missing two. I think we have to go for broke this round.

Guessing that STRING was one of the TIE words, so we presumably have one TIE word and two VOICE words left.

EAGLEs, SEALs, and HORSEs all are at least capable of making vocal sounds - but I don't see any way to distinguish between them, so I'd steer clear of any of these.
Conductors have voices; train conductors would use those voices.

BARK is a sound that could be made by a voice. Or a voice could be described as BARKing.

That makes me think of BARKing mad, which points to NUT - a NUTjob would also have a voice and use it. But I think NUT also has high Blue team value (Natto and Nuts are both foods), and if we guess one of their words, our defeat goes from probable to certain.

Leaning towards BARK / CONDUCTOR / PIN (going back to TIE, and I still don't see anything better for TIE) at the moment.

Hm. Yeah, depends on how big of a production is made out of it, I suppose. Like, if the logo for the show was a giant button, or if the button takes up half the podium, or something like that.

Also don't know if Charles is familiar with the show, or would expect us to be familiar with it.

I'd think CONDUCTOR is better than BUTTON for sure. Not sure about BARK; that one's a shakier connection to start with, no matter how we approach it.

We should discuss things and come to a consensus before making any guesses, unless deadline gets close. (We have 48 hours; there may be flexibility, but I wouldn't count on that flexibility being there.)

The "3" part of tris's clue means specifically that we're looking for three different words with a connection of some sort to "Animal". Codemasters cannot use the number to signify *anything* else about the clue - it always means "Look for this many answers, and no more." (There are two exceptions - 0 clues and Unlimited clues; I'll explain those if they come up.)

I think DINOSAUR is a good match - dinosaurs are animals. CATs and MOLEs are also animals. I don't see anything else on the grid that can be described as an animal, and simple connections are usually the best ones to go with.

My recommendation is that we guess in the order CAT > MOLE > DINOSAUR, assuming all three of us agree that those are good words to guess.

Code I can see. Why Giant?

Screen could be good, although I'd think Code + screen would be more like Programming, 2 ...

Stadiums have numbers prominently posted (scoreboards) ...
Courts deal with numbers (assessing fines) ...

Plus we have two Animal clues still floating around. Dinosaur's almost certainly one of them. What else?

Wait. BUCK. A male deer. That's another animal. Puts it in the strong and simple category, which is good as I had at least four other guesses lined up for Animal whose connections were far weaker.

We get three guesses max. My current inclination is to do something like:

DINOSAUR > CODE > BUCK.

Okay. So 2/3 agree Dinosaur first.

Sirius - do you have any issues with guessing Dinosaur first? The way I figure, DINOSAUR is less ambiguous than BUCK for sure (and arguably MOLE as well, now that I think of it) - while it can sometimes refer pejoratively to anything that should be extinct, if I ask someone to define "DINOSAUR" without giving any context, they're probably going to go with the scaly extinct reptile and not the more generic meaning.

After that, we can start hashing out CODE, GIANT, STADIUM, BUCK, and COURT.

Once we've guessed three Animal words, we should stop guessing words based on animal connections.

The "3" of Animals 3 means specifically that tris only intended for us to guess three words off of that clue. Trying to go beyond that number can be dangerous - the odds of hitting incorrect words skyrockets.

CAT was definitely one of the three. I'm 99%+ sure DINOSAUR's another, and hoping that BUCK is the third.

SCALE and FLY are both ones I had pegged as weaker connections (some animals have scales, some animals fly), as well as AFRICA (animals live there) and GRASS (another animal habitat). But I think BUCK beats all them out (as BUCK is an animal).

I really need to brush up on my taxonomy.

The top level of taxonomical classification. The one that divides into things like plant, fungus, bacteria ... I think animal is the top of the line? By that standard, a fly would be an animal. (Insert large amount of uncertainty here.) But then again, by that standard, so are human beings - which puts SOLDIER into play. Arguably GIANT as well.

I wouldn't consider any of them "animals" from a non-scientific point of view.

Problem with BUCK is that we run the risk of the same thing happening as did with MOLE. Moles are definitely animals, but "Mole" also has plenty of other meanings. BUCK falls into the same bucket; it's something that could be missed if reading the grid and thinking "Buck = dollars = money, which has nothing to do with animals."

Thing is, I think there are too many weaker connections to have any meaningful hope of figuring out the right one, if it's a weaker connection that was intended.

If I were going to write off BUCK for the time being, I'd probably be more inclined to skip it in favor of tackling the Numbers clue. I definitely like SCALE better than both GIANT and COURT. Less sure about STADIUM, but I think SCALE is pretty solid regardless? I still like CODE as well.

Assuming Dinosaur's a hit, I'm currently leaning CODE >> BUCK >= SCALE > STADIUM, of which we could only guess two.

How would you prioritize those, strength-wise?

For example, I'm very confident in CODE. Computer code is chock-full of numbers; codes of laws (US Code, etc.) use numbers to distinguish their sections; codes (as in encryption) can use numbers as well. That's three different definitions of CODE that play well with Numbers, which I think makes it a strong connection.
Less confident in BUCK, but confident enough to guess. It's a naturally strong connection, but we did get burned by MOLE last round, which moves it down a couple of notches (as BUCK could have the same issue).
SCALE's about the same as BUCK, but I think BUCK accomplishes more for us if it's right. I could be convinced that SCALE is a better guess than BUCK with a good argument.
STADIUM I'd need an argument for as to why it should be considered over the other three, but it's in the realm of possibility.

Everything else, I think is weak enough that I'd sooner PASS than guess them. STADIUM is very close to that point ... and honestly, with only being able to make two guesses, I'd take it off the list entirely at this point. Possibly considering it again next clue if we haven't wrapped Numbers up by then.

We won't get another clue until our next turn - and our opponents will get another clue first, along with more opportunities to guess.

They need six more words to win, as do we. I think it highly unlikely that they get all six next turn, but getting all six in two turns is at least possible.

But yes, I agree with CODE next. Sirius?

Excellent.

Whether right or wrong, our next guess is our last one before the turn passes to our opponents.

IMO, BUCK and SCALE are our two best choices here.

BUCK has a strong connection to Animal; SCALE has a weak connection to Animal (some animals have scales) and a strong connection to Numbers (numbers are an integral part of measurement-type scales). I think that's the best argument for SCALE - it actually fits with both guesses, and it has a stronger connection with the most recent clue.

I think SCALE is a more conservative guess, while BUCK is slightly riskier.

We currently need five more hits to win; opponents need six.

I'm going to quote from the physical rulebook here:
The Codenames Rules Booklet wrote:"If a spymaster gives an invalid clue, the team's turn ends immediately. As an additional penalty, the other team's spymaster may cover one of [their] words with an agent card before giving the next clue.

"But if no one notices that a clue is invalid, it counts as valid."
This is the only example in the physical rulebook of how to handle a rule violation. As such, I consider this to exemplify the spirit of how to handle any overt rule violation in Codenames - it's up to the Spymasters to keep an eye on the other team. They call out rule violations and assess the penalty; if they don't notice, that's on them. (At least for overt violations - anything that can be clearly seen by the Spymasters.)

If CM1 (acting as a player) had called this out, I would say this rule applies in full - we lose our turn, CM1 gets to reveal a free agent.
If any other Red team member had called this out, I'd still be inclined to say it applies - they're playing the game, they're materially affected by our rule violation, they absolutely are entitled to point out a violation to their Codemaster, which means the first case applies.

So what happens when someone who isn't playing points it out? Do we have a precedent for what happens to the game when someone not in the game participates?

So. BUCK, SCALE, or an impassioned argument for something that is neither of those things?

Nancy? Sirius?

I'm thinking SCALE at the moment. Connections to multiple clues is too strong to ignore, I think.

Sirius listed SCALE before BUCK, so I'm going to assume that means he has a preference for SCALE over BUCK. And last Nancy weighed in on the two, she had SCALE listed first.

tris might not have gotten around to cluing Mug yet. I can't think of any Animal or Numbers connections, so it's effectively a freebie.

I'd say FLY and SOLDIER for Paratrooper. WAR's decent, but SOLDIER is much better given that tris clued a person, not an object. Paratroopers are strongly linked with flight, and they are soldiers.

If we get both of the Paratrooper clues, that puts us at 7/8. Then comes the big debate - go for the Animal, or pass?

Yeah, that's another possibility - that FLY was indeed the Animal that tris was cluing before.

I'm okay with FLY > SOLDIER, in that order. And we've had enough "maybe-animals" that I'd be very leery of guessing BUCK afterwards. Problem is, if we end on 7/8, our opponents will go for broke - they'll have no choice. CM1 clearly has no qualms about giving infinite clues, and this would be a prime opportunity to give one. What are the odds of them hitting their four remaining agents?

We don't know for sure it's BUCK. We don't even know for sure that there's an Animal clue left.

We've got three words left. Two of them are definitely clued by Paratrooper, 2. The third ... we don't know.

SCALE could have been the third Animal clue - some animals have scales. FLY could have been the third Animal clue - some animals fly, or maybe Sirius was right and tris intended for us to think that flies themselves are animals.

Since we can be 100% confident that there are two Paratrooper words out there to guess right now, we should guess Paratrooper words first. We can't be 100% confident that there's still an Animal word. My confidence level in that right now ... is maybe around 40-50%.

And yes, if FLY and SOLDIER are right, we should
never
guess WAR. If our remaining words were FLY / SOLDIER / WAR, tris could have just given us Paratrooper 3 instead of Paratrooper 2.

If they were FLY / WAR / ???, something like Bomber, 2.
If they were WAR / SOLDIER / ???, something like Infantry, 2.

There are definitely three Animal words; we can't know for sure if we only got two or if we got all three.

Spymasters can legally clue a word multiple times. If they think we're on the wrong track, they *should* clue the word multiple times. It's entirely possible that BUCK fell into the "MOLE" category (reasonable but wrong) and that SCALE or FLY was the other animal word, which tris clued twice.

That would mean one word hasn't been clued at all yet. Which would be bad if it were true, but sometimes coming up with the right word is hard - and the more words you try to link together, the tougher it is.

Problem is, tris's strategy is good in both worlds. If BUCK is correct and we keep talking about it? Better to clue the other words than to re-clue BUCK. If BUCK is wrong and we keep talking about it? Try to clue the other Animal word so we guess it and stop talking about BUCK.

No way to know for sure which world we're in.

All right. So here's where we stand.

We need one more word to win, and we have one more guess this turn.

If we guess the word correctly, we win.
If we pass, our opponents will get one more turn only - there is no way we fail to guess the correct word with another clue.
If we guess the word incorrectly, we either make things easier on our opponents, OR outright lose (if we guess the assassin).

Our opponents need five more words to win. If they get another turn, they will need to guess all five words in that turn in order to win. They have three clues to work with, plus they'll get one more clue from CM1.
I don't want to do a detailed breakdown of their clues and words because that helps them more than it helps us. But I think there's oodles of ambiguity out there on their side.

I don't think one more clue is going to be enough for them to snag all five of their words in a single turn. Especially given high odds it'll be an INFINITE clue. And I am more confident in that than I am about BUCK.

Based on that, I think we should pass. As long as we get one more turn, we'll get one more clue - and since it only has to cover a single word, it's pretty much guaranteed to point right at the word, no matter what that word is.

Buffalo are particularly large for animals ... one might even say GIANT.
Buffalo are known to live in the GRASSlands (among other habitats).
The Buffalo Bills play in a STADIUM.

Given all the talk we'd done about BUCK, I think it would have taken a sledgehammer-level clue to get the Red team to consider it. BUFFALO is great, but I think there are too many ways of interpreting it.

I thought of VENISON as a possibility - that definitely hits BUCK! - but I think people are more likely to hit MINT over KETCHUP.

Hoo boy.

That could be a Margaret Thatcher reference? I *think* she was a Prime Minister of the UK at some point?

Or thatching like ... in Villagers, there's a card called Thatcher that serves as a builder and generates gold. Probably not a reference to that specifically, but building things out of hay, maybe?

I see some words that might connect to Margaret Thatcher - RULER? (I know the PM isn't the monarch, but is the head of government); MILLIONAIRE? (I have no idea what Margaret Thatcher's financial situation was like, but big government officials certainly are more likely than the average person to be rich); FILM? (I don't know of any movies about her, but I'd be willing to bet at least one exists).

The only maybe-connection I see to Thatcher as a hay worker is HORSE (they eat hay, I think?).

Confidence level is low for all of these.

So, in no particular order, we have:

HORSE - Thatchers (not Margaret Thatcher) work with hay; horses eat hay (?).
MILLIONAIRE - Margaret Thatcher was a politician; politicians are usually rich; ergo Margaret Thatcher is probably rich.
FILM - Margaret Thatcher was famous; famous people have films made about them; ergo, Margaret Thatcher is probably the subject of a film.
LOCH NESS - Loch Ness is part of Scotland, which is part of the UK; Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of the UK.
PANTS - Margaret Thatcher was known for wearing pantsuits.
CAT - a cat in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is known by a diminutive form of Margaret, in reference to Margaret Thatcher.

Things I'd like to know:

1) Was Margaret Thatcher really rich? If so, MILLIONAIRE looks a lot better.
2) Are there any movies about Margaret Thatcher? If so, FILM looks a lot better.
3) Given the "Iron Lady" reference, what was Margaret Thatcher's reputation like? Was she considered a monster, of any sort (even if just by her political opposition)? If so, LOCH NESS looks even better.
4) How prevalent were the pantsuits?

My current inclination is LOCH NESS > Pass.

Ooh. That's another possibility. PM is in charge of Parliament, I think ... which I think is where bills come from? House of Commons, house of Lords ... and we're running into the limits of my knowledge of British politics.

That means we can safely assume his knowledge of British politics is much greater than mine.

Unfortunately, don't think that changes much from where we are right now? Other than maybe, if Margaret Thatcher was generally disliked by the British public, and Not_Mafia *is* a member of the British public, odds are higher that Not_Mafia holds a general dislike for Margaret Thatcher, and thus might associate her with a monster, making LOCH NESS a better guess?

Or that he'd be more likely to come up with associations about Margaret Thatcher in general, and thus considering clues like HORSE is probably the wrong direction?

Yeah, if it were just the Loch Ness Monster connection, I'd be pretty iffy about that too. But there's also the "Loch Ness is in Scotland, which is part of the UK" connection.

Haven't heard of Colin Thatcher. Also British?

I'm honestly not sure. I think so, but I can't construct much of a logic chain to prove it.

Bills of attainder were a thing around the time of the US Revolution. If those were a thing then, then at least at some point in history it'd seem logical that "bills" would be something Parliament would handle?

If both you and StrangerCoug are still favoring LOCH NESS over BILL, I won't push it too far. I think they're both good candidates.

I like KING for sure. GAME resonates well with me, although that's probably because all the games I mod in Mish-Mash have a "Game Status" window in the OP. Like, if I'd been in the game from the start and The Bulge was a frequent player of games I mod, I'd rank that more highly, but neither of those things are true.

INDIA might be a possibility? Don't they have a history with caste systems as a way of measuring social status?

LIMOUSINE would be another status symbol. Possibly OPERA along the same lines.

BATTERY seems like a good guess as well. So does NOTE - I was thinking along the lines of a status report, which could be written as a note.

I'm tentatively leaning BATTERY = KING > NOTE > LIMOUSINE > INDIA > GAME >> OPERA, and I'm not sure where passing fits into there.

I'd probably put WEB somewhere in the INDIA / GAME range.

I'd say go for KING next. BATTERY and KING are the two I'm most confident about. Datisi, what are your thoughts on KING?

I feel strongly about KING compared to WEB for sure - WEB falls into the "eh, maybe?" morass that INDIA / LIMOUSINE / OPERA fall into.

NOTE is the only other one that really resonates for me and isn't KING, and I'll concede there's something of a second-order connection there so won't push it.

So I guess current ranking would be ...

KING >= NOTE = (pass) >> INDIA = WEB = LIMOUSINE = OPERA > LAB > COMPOUND = ROBOT >> DUCK.

Hm. I don't know what Biotics are ... but I do know what antibiotics are. So it'd stand to reason that biotics are the things that antibiotics are designed to kill. Plus I think probiotic yogurt is a thing?

That makes me think of LAB (where I'd expect biotics would be studied), BUG (as a synonym for illness, presumably caused by biotics), maybe PASTE (thinking about the probiotic yogurt), maybe COMPOUND?

I haven't heard of biotics in that way before, but if the rest of you have, that just means I have some research to do.*

Regardless of which way we interpret it, though, LAB still comes out a winner. So I'd say that LAB should be our first guess in that case, since it meshes with all of the possible interpretations?

So maybe LAB > ROBOT > figure out where we stand from there?

* - after the game is over.

You've already gotten a clue this turn - POOL 4.

Your turn ends when any of the following happen:

1) Your team guesses any word that is *not* Red.
2) Your team guesses
five
words that are Red. (FENCE and ROUND both count towards this limit. Five specifically because Sirius gave "4" as part of his clue; guesses = number of the clue plus one).
3) Your team passes.

Once any of those happens, The Bulge gets to give us (the Blue Team) a clue, and it's our turn to start guessing.

Sirius cannot legally give you a clue right now.

All right, let's dig in now.

Four words left. We know three of them tie into SOPHISTICATED, and one does not.

We also know three of them tie into BIOTICS, and one does not. I think it's a safe assumption that the breakdown is:

Two match with both BIOTICS and SOPHISTICATED.
One matches with BIOTICS but *not* SOPHISTICATED.
One matches with SOPHISTICATED but *not* BIOTICS.

(Yeah, theoretically, it could be three dual matches and one totally unclued word, but it isn't, because in what world does our codemaster fail to clue the one word they haven't clued yet?)

So I'm having second thoughts about LIMOUSINE / THEATER, as I don't see how either word connects to BIOTICS.

ROSE is sounding better and better by the minute, as I think ROSE could hit both clues - at least if we stretch BIOTICS to "living things."
BUG pretty much has to be the "not-sophisticated" BIOTICS.
I think one of LIMOUSINE / THEATER fills the "not-biotics" SOPHISTICATED, but one of them is out, and I'm not sure which.

Only other thing I can think of is what lilith thought earlier - DUCK.

So I'm at ROSE = BUG > (LIMOUSINE / THEATER) > DUCK right now.

Menalque's argument about status possibly matching LIMOUSINE makes sense - but BUG could also be a STATUS hit (status of a bug report).

I strongly object to this.

It isn't overthinking to ask how THEATRE fits in with BIOTICS - because if Theatre is right, it pretty much has to fit Biotics. (Or an explanation as to how LIMOUSINE fits Biotics would work too.)

Operating theatre ... okay, that's a possibility. Agreed that it's a stretch, but also agreed that we're working with a lot of stretches in general.

My picture of olives tends to lean away from sophistication - yeah, your portrayal is a good one, but there's also the portrayal of cheap black olives in a can. The sort you'd find on a pizza, or the sort I cut up all the time for various dishes (that have no sophistication in them whatsoever). DUCK I think has a stronger connection to sophistication - or maybe less diluted might be a better way of phrasing it? Could be a cultural perspective, though - and for all I know there's another cultural perspective where olives are only served with the finest cuisine while duck is used for slop.

I'll withdraw the strong objection to guessing THEATRE at all, but still think we should at least do BUG first before we go there.

Hm. Translation: do not under any circumstances guess DUCK. And sending that message was more important than giving us any information about what we should guess - which means we probably have everything we need?

DUCK
: ruled out by WINGS 0.
THEATRE: strong match for SOPHISTICATION. ??? for BIOTICS. ("operating" theater is a connection.) Very difficult to connect to wings. (cherubs in the archways? plays about flight?)
OLIVE: possible match for SOPHISTICATION. ??? for BIOTICS. (is alive, but that's about it?) Very difficult to connect to wings. (olives and strawberries are both fruits; winged strawberries exist in at least one video game.)
ROSE: possible match for SOPHISTICATION. ??? for BIOTICS. Connection to WINGS - ROSE as the past tense of RISE, and wings help one rise through the air. Counter-argument: easy to see "ROSE" and just think about the flower, not the past-tense definition of RISE.
COMPOUND: maybe a match for BIOTICS? Not seeing SOPHISTICATION. This is just along the lines of "compounds are science-y; biotics are science-y."
PASTE: got nothing here.
WEB: Other than the "web -> internet -> connects to literally everything", I've got nothing here.

Current leaning: THEATER > OLIVE > COMPOUND > ROSE >>> WEB > PASTE > (insert about a thousand >s) > DUCK.

At this point, I'm devaluing BIOTICS, as clearly I don't understand what it means.

I'm cool with a guess of COMPOUND first.

WEB is still striking me as really iffy. Taking WEB as a synonym for Internet, it's one of those words where I'd struggle *not* to connect it to just about anything I could think of.
Something else I just thought of - spiderwebs exist to catch winged insects.

Guess: COMPOUND

I don't think we can reasonably wait any longer for our first guess; we're way past 48 hours at this point.

GG everyone.

So apparently the first Google hit for "biotics" is a nutritional supplement company - which might hit ROSE (rosehips), but still probably also hits COMPOUND. I think even with Google we get led astray there. (Biotics is also a term in Mass Effect - think like telekinetic powers - which could have been a heck of a red herring if any of us had thought of it / been aware of it.)

Maybe something like VINES 3 gets us to where we need to be? Thinking flora to get to ROSE and OLIVE (plus OLIVE doubles as a possible vine color), and the long stringy appearance to get to WEB. That runs the risk of hitting DUCK (as a verb), though.

Yeah, "Country 3" or "Countries 3" would seem to be the no-brainer for Germany/France/Mexico.

"Europe 3" would be perfect for Germany/France/State, I think, so maybe not that combo either.

Only other geopolitical words I see is PHOENIX, which doesn't seem likely - I think of cities as having limits more so than borders. Well, JUPITER, but planets don't really have borders either. Trying to think of what else has borders and drawing a blank.

Tentative leaning: STATE > FENCE > MEXICO > GERMANY > FRANCE, and I'm not sure where passing falls in there. There's definitely some American bias in there on my part, as I tend to think of local borders first - but pretty sure Nancy mentioned being Canadian in an earlier game, so that bias wouldn't apply on her part.

Could go either way?

States always have borders.
Borders frequently have fences, but not always (sometimes walls, or if we're talking about the US type of state, no barriers at all). By that metric, STATE > FENCE.

Looking at things from the "maybe the codemaster didn't consider meaning X" perspective ... there I'd think FENCE > STATE, but not by much.

I think the edge case here is something like "(One of STATE / FENCE) + MEXICO + (One of FRANCE / GERMANY)." Don't suppose anyone happens to know just how Germany, France, and Mexico divide themselves up internally? Like, US = States; Canada = Provinces ...

It'd be relevant if Germany and/or Mexico had states. Especially if Germany does and Mexico doesn't.

Good point about property borders. I think that pushes me over to the FENCE > STATE side.

Now that I think of it, France = Province sounds right to me? Thinking along the lines of "Canada has cultural connections with France and uses provinces itself." Plus some really bad board game logic on top of that.

It's a point against FRANCE, at least.

Yeah, I don't think I'd describe a cloak's edge as a border. Fringe, maybe?

Every other non-geopolitical connection I can think of is way too weak to hazard a guess on. cardSTOCK could have a border? Weak.
Could see businesses next to a border, like BANKs and HOTELs? Weak.
HEART and Borders are both things a nation has? Very weak.

So. Our opponents have a 5-clue on the board, with 1/5 ID'd. We have 5 left; they have 8. At this point I think it's pretty much pick-a-country?

Does Nancy give a BORDER clue if a) the third word is a country and b) neither of the other two countries are worse than neutral? If the answer to both is yes, we should guess. Otherwise, we should probably pass.

That's my current line of thinking. I don't think any of GERMANY / MEXICO / FRANCE are missed as possible / reasonable BORDER hits, so I'm thinking it pretty likely none of them are worse than neutral from our POV. So I think it's probably safe to guess MEXICO.

Wow. A three clue with three words left to go. Awesome.

Spoiler: my thoughts
Heart: thinking of not so much the physical organ as more like a synonym for motivation. Energy as a synonym for "get-up-and-go." Those both seem to connect.
Scientist: studies and measures energy, depending on what type of scientist.
Vacuum: as an appliance, it consumes energy. I vaguely recall reading a sci-fi story where "vacuum state energy" was a thing? Or vacuum point energy? And it was the sort of story that at least *tried* to base its theories on science fact.
Time: both Time and Energy are relevant in physics.
Stock: could buy stock in an energy company.

Currently leaning SCIENTIST to start with. If SCIENTIST is good, TIME starts looking pretty good too, I think.

All three of us picked HEART, so that's probably the one we should go with first.

HEART > SCIENTIST > (PASS) is where I am now. Opponents have six words left to go; picking off six clues in a single round is ... extraordinarily difficult.

Yeah, same here.

Only other one I can think of would be ORGAN (thinking the instrument), but given that HEART was wrong last time around, I doubt ENERGY meant to clue Organ but *not* Heart.

I had, yes - thinking "You could watch YouTUBE on a phone." But I figured it was a very weak connection compared to the others, and it increased the likelihood of hitting words like TELESCOPE (technology), STRING (tin-can phones connected by string), maybe GREEN (maybe iPhones were/could be Green? Wasn't sure - just now looked it up, and yup, they can be), and *very slight maybe* COOK (Tim Cook, who I thought was connected to Apple - and just now looked that up, yup, that's Apple's CEO).

COOK was the assassin, for the record, so even though "(associated in some way) with (company that makes phones)" is a ludicrously weak connection, I didn't want to encourage stretches.

I have no problem with any sort of PM-based system to let players know it's their turn, so long as the PM is kept bare-bones (maybe require a template?) and it's limited to once per turn.

I would not play in the Google-based game. That takes all the fun out of the game. If we're talking about variants, I would love to see Duet pop up at some point.

The main differences between Duet and regular:
1) Duet is co-operative; regular is competitive.
2) There are no Blue words vs. Red words; there are only Green words/agents- but the Green words are different for each Spymaster. The Spymasters have to identify 15 agents amongst the 25 words.
3) More assassins! Three assassins per Spymaster instead of just one. (Makes up for the fact that there are no longer "enemy" agents to work around.)
4) The Spymasters alternate between giving and guessing; when they're guessing, they're allowed to talk and discuss (although they can't discuss clues they gave or which words belong to them).
5) Duet's meant for smaller groups - it can support as few as two players. (More can still play, though.)

Oh, and Duet's difficulty is scalable. You can reduce (or increase) the number of turns, or set a limit on how many bystanders you're allowed to tag before Bad Things happen.

Spoiler: More Duet stuff, including a Duet board
Player 1 gets this keycard:

FROG
SNOW
AZTEC
VALENTINE
GAS
DISEASE
PALM
MUD
NIGHT
BAY
LIFE
STABLE
SPELL
TUXEDO
WIND
HOSE
CLOAK
TRUNK
AXE
BIG BANG
LION
SALAD
NERVE
MILL
FORCE

Player 2 gets this keycard:

FROG
SNOW
AZTEC
VALENTINE
GAS
DISEASE
PALM
MUD
NIGHT
BAY
LIFE
STABLE
SPELL
TUXEDO
WIND
HOSE
CLOAK
TRUNK
AXE
BIG BANG
LION
SALAD
NERVE
MILL
FORCE

Player 1 gets to see the top keycard and has to give clues to get Player 2 to guess the nine green words on the top keycard. Player 2 gets to see the bottom keycard and has to give clues to get Player 1 to guess the nine green words on the bottom keycard.

As far as how to handle more than two players - it's up to the Mod. Could either divide everyone into two teams and have everyone be Spymasters; could divide everyone into two teams and assign one Spymaster to each team; could just have the two Spymasters while everyone else is allowed to work actively for both of them.

P-Edit: as far as discussion goes, Spymasters are allowed to openly discuss clues they've received when it's their turn to guess; they just can't discuss clues they have given or what their keycard looks like. As long as the Spymasters follow that rule, there should be more discussion, not less.

Spoiler:
Streamers produce video content, which could be displayed on YouTUBE.
Streamers produce content on the InterNET.
Some streamers PIRATE games.
CONCERTs and streamers are both sources of entertainment.
You'd watch a streamer's content on a SCREEN.

That's all I got. PIRATE is notably weaker than the others; CONCERT I think would normally be a strong connection, but the other three words are themselves interconnected in addition to their connection with the word. That being said, TUBE's a bit weaker than the others.

I'd probably go NET > SCREEN > TUBE = CONCERT.

Was thinking that MONITOR 3 might have been a way to hit Tube/Net/Screen without hitting Concert, but then remembered that concerts absolutely have monitors all over the place, so that wouldn't work.

The one thing that's universally true about Streamers is that they broadcast to the internet in some form or another. And for anyone not visually impaired, that content would be displayed via screen.

I don't think CONCERT is a stretch at all - not just the entertainment connection, but there's also a music connection specifically (things that broadcast music). Just that there's a good argument for TUBE as well, given YouTube and other similarly-named sites.

My thinking for Net > Screen: I can't fathom a world where The Bulge clues an internet-based word without intending to hit NET. SCREEN, there's a slight chance. Not much of one, but there's a chance.

Spoiler:
Drift has a very strong connection with water, which brings up WAKE, WIND, (river)BANK, PIRATE, and SINK (verb).
Also, drifting away = SLIPping away.

Not sure initially how to weight these.

A WAKE is prominent if moving swiftly; if you're drifting, you're moving slowly. You'd have a wake, but a very minor one. Weak.
PIRATEs themselves probably wouldn't drift too much themselves, but I could totally see them setting people adrift. Moderate?
WIND ... oh bloody heck, now I can't listen to Firework until this game is over. :P "Drifting through the WIND" is part of the first verse. Not water; thinking like a leaf drifting through the wind. Okay, that one's strong.
BANK as in riverbank is always a bit of a stretch by itself, but I could see drifting by the bank of the river. Somewhere between weak and moderate.
SINK and drift are both things you can do in water. I like connections like these, although what happened to the Red team last round serves as a reminder that not everyone else does. I'd put it at moderate, personally.
SLIP ... I like this one personally, but it's a bit of a different approach than the others. Weak to moderate.

So that puts me at WIND > SINK > PIRATE > BANK = SLIP > WAKE. Not sure where passing falls in there right now.

All right, here's where we are so far. We've got three more to go. I'd forgotten we were the starting team, so passing isn't quite as good as I was thinking - but it's not a horrible strategy either. What do y'all think?

Spoiler:
Anniversaries are a special DAY.
GOLD is a traditional gift for a suitably impressive anniversary.
CONCERT is a way of celebrating an anniversary.

That's all I see. Probably DAY > CONCERT = GOLD as far as Anniversary goes, without considering leftovers for Drift.

Spoiler: Comparisons ...
Gold vs. Concert.

+ to Gold: The whole "traditional gift" thing - like, Paper is supposed to be the "traditional" gift for a first wedding anniversary. I don't remember any of the other positions, but I'm 100% sure that both silver and gold are on the list somewhere - maybe 25th / 50th at a guess? I think it even goes so far as to call the 50th anniversary the "Golden" anniversary for that reason.

- to Gold: it also matches with a Red Team clue - Steel and Gold are both metals. I'd put that connection as stronger than our connection, which makes me real hesitant to guess it for Anniversary.

+ to Concert: I think maybe anniversary concerts are a thing? Like, it's the 25th anniversary of <whatever> here; let's hold a concert to commemorate it? Not just wedding anniversaries, but for entertainment franchises and the like?

- to Concert: It was Streamer 3, not Streamer 5. (WIND was one of ours too, and that connected with Streamer. Granted, different definition of Streamer, so I can see that connection either being missed or thought of as too weak - but that wouldn't apply to Concert.
Concert was a solid connection.)

Right now, leaning CONCERT over GOLD, mostly due to #2. So DAY > CONCERT > GOLD for Anniversary clues. I would say we could hazard a guess on SLIP, but it should be at some point after DAY.

So slip to drift -

From a racing perspective, "slipstream" is a thing, I think. Plus tires could lose traction - slip - while drifting.
From a movement perspective, "drifting" and "slipping" are pretty similar.
From a nautical perspective, you could drift into a slip (a marina berth is called a slip, I think?)

None of those by themselves are super-strong, but anything with three semi-reasonable separate connections is usually a pretty good bet.

And then there was one.

Options here:
1) Pass. Opponents get one shot to guess five in a row and will be forced to attempt it; if they fail, our victory is as certain as anything ever gets in this game.
2) Gold. If correct, we win; if wrong, it's probably a red word. Presumably, they then get one shot to guess four in a row.
3) Concert. If correct, we win; if wrong ... who knows. Could be anything. Probably not the assassin, especially since CONCERT was a possible Streamer connection, but you never know.
4) Something else clever.

For me the logic goes - CONCERT's less likely to do damage than GOLD is. But if we're prioritizing "not doing damage", passing accomplishes that the best.

Red team will also get to deal with this whole "who does GOLD belong to?" dilemma. Granted, they'll get an extra clue, but they've still got two words totally unclued. Unless Charles can come up with a 4 or 5, he'll be forced to clue Unlimited (or zero, I suppose), which will muddy the waters.

While "All that glitters isn't gold" is a common saying. So yeah, GOLD pretty much has to be it.

Glittery pants are a thing, but this is a 1-clue. The simplest, most obvious connection is the one to go with - and there are plenty of ways of cluing PANTS without ambiguity. Clothing - 1, for example. Denim - 1 is even better.

Some of the most obvious GOLD connections could possibly connect strongly to PIRATE, so I think "Glitter" was chosen specifically to avoid making any connections like that.

Duet's a 2-player cooperative version of Codenames. Both players alternate between giving clues and guessing them, using the same 25-word grid but different keycards. They win by IDing all 15 of their agents (9 each, with 3 of them belonging to both players) before giving too many clues or hitting an assassin.

Game 45 had everyone break into pairs and play out separate games of Duet in PTs (using the same word grid and same set of agents), with the winning pair being the one that managed to do the best job of contacting agents quickly without causing too many problems (bystanders, breaking rules, getting horribly murdered by assassins).

I've never seen a Spymaster give an Unlimited clue on the first clue; I don't know what message Nancy's trying to convey with that. Best guess - encouragement to make a lot of guesses?

I agree that Africa, Egypt, and Hollywood are all good choices. Turkey is also a country, so that's another possibility.

I thought of Square as an out-there choice as well; given the circumstances I think we should avoid Cliff. Moon I hadn't thought of, but yeah, that's another one I'd consider.

Pit was another one I'd at least thought of.

I'm currently leaning EGYPT = HOLLYWOOD >= AFRICA > TURKEY > MOON.
