Spoiler: RULES

1. The game will be played to the rules listed here. (The rules are also known to be available in many other languages if you feel more comfortable reading them in one of those—click here, then click on the flag associated with the other language. Just be aware that the game will be played in English.) The rest of these rules are additions and clarifications by me only.
   
2. On the key cards sent to the spymasters as well as in the thread reveal, red and blue codenames indicate that color team's agents, bolded gray indicates the assassin. (Innocent bystanders have no color formatting, but in the reveal, they will be stricken out to distinguish them from codenames not guessed yet.) The locations of each team's agents as well as that of the assassin is random, and
   the key may or may not correspond to a key card in the actual board game
   —this is partly because I don't have a physical copy of the game and partly to make it harder for more experienced players of the game.
   
3. Guesses must be bolded and/or preceded by the word "GUESS" on a new line to count. (If you wish to pass instead of guessing, the word "pass" must be bolded or by itself on a new line.) Clues, however, can be in any format that makes it clear to everyone that it is so.
   
4. You can guess more than one codename at a time if you wish so long as they're in the order you want me to process them. For example, if you put
   GUESS: ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA
   , and ALPHA is one of your agents but BETA isn't, I can't tell you anything about GAMMA (unless BETA costs you the game).
   
5. Spymasters are not permitted to post in the thread except to give clues. There are two categories of exceptions to this:
   1. If a spymaster gives an illegal clue, the opponent spymaster may give away one of their agents for free prior to giving their clue. Again, I only care about clear formatting. (If a spymaster gives an illegal clue while the opposing team is one agent away from winning the game, I will call it under the assumption that this rule will be invoked to obtain the win.)
      
   2. I reserve the right to declare the spymasters my temporary backup mods in the event I anticipate being V/LA, and they in turn have the right to act as backup mods without my saying so if I go 48 hours without a post in this thread. In practice, I allow spymasters to say whether field operatives' guesses are right or wrong even if I'm not V/LA or I posted in thread in the last 48 hours in the interest of keeping the game moving.
   If a spymaster has a question, they should PM me.
   
6. Field operatives may discuss clues with each other if they so wish, but they must do so in thread—getting help from outside the thread (for example, searching on Google) is not allowed, nor is help permitted from anyone not participating in the current game. (As a matter of fact, when in doubt, you should treat the currently ongoing match like you would a Mafia game.) Further, spymasters are not allowed to give their field operatives any further help than their clues. However, discussion of strategy is permitted in between games (as well as prior to the first game) by anyone regardless of whether they played the last game or intend to play the next one.
   
7. I'm willing to let you pick teammates and even whether you want to be red or blue; just post something to that effect. No more than four players can be on a team, however. If you have no preference what team you're on or what team color you get, it will be chosen at random for you.
   
8. The role of spymaster is by agreement once teams are determined. If a team does not agree on a spymaster within a reasonable time frame, one will be chosen at random among those that have not declined to be the spymaster. (If everybody on a team declines to be spymaster, then nobody's request not to be the spymaster will be honored for that team. Somebody's got to do the dirty work )
   
9. By default, the flexible rules described on page 7 are not in play. (Both expert clue rules are guaranteed to be in play, however.) At least 75% of the players must agree prior to the game starting if they would like to use any or all of the flexible rules, and it is in effect only for that game. Any flexible rule that fails to get 75% approval is not used. (I may grant exceptions to this for rules that prove so popular that I believe it's more productive to simply allow it unless more than 25% of the players of a game object.
   
10. Field operatives must make their first guess within 48 hours (2 days) of receiving a clue and then any subsequent guesses within 48 hours of being told if their previous guess was correct (This 48 hours is reset after each guess). After this time, the opposing spymaster may force a pass by submitting their next clue. If a guess is made after the elapsed time but before the opposing spymaster posts a clue then the guess will be valid.
    
11. A field operative may post outside of their turn, as long as they make it clear by using an easily-noticed shade of green for their text.

We don't know for sure it's BUCK. We don't even know for sure that there's an Animal clue left.

We've got three words left. Two of them are definitely clued by Paratrooper, 2. The third ... we don't know.

SCALE could have been the third Animal clue - some animals have scales. FLY could have been the third Animal clue - some animals fly, or maybe Sirius was right and tris intended for us to think that flies themselves are animals.

Since we can be 100% confident that there are two Paratrooper words out there to guess right now, we should guess Paratrooper words first. We can't be 100% confident that there's still an Animal word. My confidence level in that right now ... is maybe around 40-50%.

I would have been opposed to mole but obviously I wasn’t allowed to say anything. I think buck is probably our 3rd animal word but yeah, I approve this strategy because if both of those words are correct, it’s definitely buck then.

RULE CHANGES!!

So, I've just gone through and cleaned up the rules section a bit whilst adding the new rules, it's now divided into 3 sections (Field Operatives/Spymaster/Other Stuff)
All players are expected to have read through the role they're playing and the other stuff section!

I have added in the following rules:
FO.5: You may not discuss past clues whilst waiting for your spymaster to give a new clue.
S.5: If you feel like a clue might not be 100% legal, you may message the other spymaster and ask for their approval, if they approve then it is a legal clue in any case. If they disapprove but you still think it should be legal, you may message me and I'll make a final ruling on it.
OS.2: Any player or spymaster may call out either an illegal clue or a rule break, to do so please put in bold PAUSE GAME and say why you paused the game. At this point nobody should discuss clues or anything. Please then ping me on discord and I'll come and resolve the issue. If you're unsure please pause the game anyway and I'll happily intervene. For illegal clues the opposing spymaster always has the choice to allow the game to carry on.
OS.3: If you're not playing, you must not call out any illegal clues, it is down to the players themselves.
(Reason for this rule is that it is a valid strategy to try and get away with submitting an illegal clue in the hopes of not being caught out)
OS.4: If you wish for a rule to be changed, please PM me and I'll bring it up as a topic of discussion between games. Rules will not change during a game.

HORSE - Thatchers (not Margaret Thatcher) work with hay; horses eat hay (?).
MILLIONAIRE - Margaret Thatcher was a politician; politicians are usually rich; ergo Margaret Thatcher is probably rich.
FILM - Margaret Thatcher was famous; famous people have films made about them; ergo, Margaret Thatcher is probably the subject of a film.
LOCH NESS - Loch Ness is part of Scotland, which is part of the UK; Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of the UK.
PANTS - Margaret Thatcher was known for wearing pantsuits.
CAT - a cat in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is known by a diminutive form of Margaret, in reference to Margaret Thatcher.

Things I'd like to know:

1) Was Margaret Thatcher really rich? If so, MILLIONAIRE looks a lot better.
2) Are there any movies about Margaret Thatcher? If so, FILM looks a lot better.
3) Given the "Iron Lady" reference, what was Margaret Thatcher's reputation like? Was she considered a monster, of any sort (even if just by her political opposition)? If so, LOCH NESS looks even better.
4) How prevalent were the pantsuits?

My current inclination is LOCH NESS > Pass.

I know for a fact that a biopic was made about her so film may be a really good guess. I don’t recall if she was ever compared to the loch ness monster. Doesn’t ring a bell. I’d go with film next.

There’s also a politician named Colin Thatcher and of course film actor Colin Firth.

Unfortunately, don't think that changes much from where we are right now? Other than maybe, if Margaret Thatcher was generally disliked by the British public, and Not_Mafia *is* a member of the British public, odds are higher that Not_Mafia holds a general dislike for Margaret Thatcher, and thus might associate her with a monster, making LOCH NESS a better guess?

Or that he'd be more likely to come up with associations about Margaret Thatcher in general, and thus considering clues like HORSE is probably the wrong direction?

I mean it’s possible but I don’t recall ever hearing her explicitly called that. Witch I can se but idk about loch ness. I just think it should be a lot more obvious to me.

Yeah, I really thought we were losing this. Had I done it over, I would have done invention 2, this way, we were guaranteed the win. Had blue not chosen “wake”, we might have lost because it was hard coming up with an easy recognizable word that fit all three. Problem is I didn’t make the connection with heart/energy and didn’t think about “invention” until the end.

It totally blew my mind how blue team went from from 3 - 9 in one single turn!

Whilst I appreciate it's frustrating not having everyone around, there's not a lot I can do, it's the players responsibility to keep checking in to this game and I'm not gonna force players to do so.

In my opinion Codenames is meant to be a more chilled Mish Mash game and that's one of the perks of having bigger teams.

If people disagree with this then feel free to shoot me a DM and I'll bring it up as a topic of conversation post game and we can look at changing some rules to bring in some prod rules or something. But for now, as it's not in the main rules, I'm not gonna be prodding players on a regular basis, if they're not around to help the team then that's on them.

1) How would people feel about having a 1-off game of googling allowed where spy's and guessers are allowed to google things and try to find the very perfect word!
-If I got enough people interested in it then I'd run it as Game 45 and I'd have spymasters who purposely sign up for it and not use the ones in queue for this round

2) There was talk of prodding rules and stuff, how would people feel on the following rule: Spymasters may prod their own players if they wish to do so, said prod must only be a message saying that it's a prod and nothing else

1) Why don’t you run BOTH a google and a non-google versuon?

2) Send a reminder to one’s teammates since people sometimes can forget they’re in a game.

Here’s my concern. We don’t know if gold is a red, blue or neutral word, so if we guess wrong. it defaults back to blue.

Dog could also be a Woodstock clue because Snoopy is Woodstock’s best friend.

I think dog is probably one of the more obvious Woodstock clues and skyscraper fit with that too since Snoopy was the red baron and would sometimes fly planes.

Diver seems good and I think Captain Nemo was attacked by a giant octopus. Platypus seems like more of a stretch. Was there a platypus in either movie?

Wasn’t 20,000 Leagues about a sea voyage? And Nemo is a fish in Disney, so pilot may be risky. We know thaat orange and octopus are 2/4 Nemo clues, so chances are ar least one more involves water. Also infinite predator words. Does pilot come to mind when you think of predator? I think that’s kind’ve weak.

So from what I recall about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The author of that is Jules Verne who’s french. Key word possibly being under.

We might be safer maybe trying to guess another predator clue? Mole and mass maybe?

What about sink or trunk? I think in 20,000 Leagues they get shipwrecked and encounter things under the sea, so we could try either/both of those or just pass? Mass could be a predator.

What was the assassin word? I would have started off with spin, gauge and life. Life=pilot, unicorn, kiwi, mass, unless Europe was the assassin word? Was it press? Because I thought if not pilot, press could possibly a gauge word.

Life has a weaker connection to Europe than living imo, because living makes you think more of culture than simply life. Story could have tied both mass and unicorn but probably nothing else.

I couldn’t find it either in post 0 or in the link I just clicked. The only part I could corroborate was this:

But now I know for next time. I did think x-ray was a valid clue though. I would have chosen something else otherwise such as maybe “medical” or “science”, so I 100% wasn’t trying to get away with anything.

The rule about compound words says that words with hyphens or spaces aren’t valid clues, unless we’re playing with flexible rules.

How does that work exactly - flexible rules?

Perhaps CM1 can just add to post 0 a list of illegal clues and explain how the flexible rules figures into all of that? Most people aren’t going to look beyond post 0 for clarification I don’t think.

generally, any noun that starts with a capital letter (unless it's only capitalized to begin a sentence), which in most cases is a name of a person, place, or thing, like Alfred or Mexico or Windex.

this rule would also extend to any capitalized adjectives, Mexican for example

I think NM used “Thatcher” as a clue in a previous game (but I don’t remember whether or not he capitalized it or not) and I used “Moby” in this one.

So is that illegal? And if so, what if you gave the exact same clue all in lowercase such as for example “mccartney” or would “beatles” be fine because they are also bugs?
