Me and Tris have a board that looks kinda like this:

I have 9 words coloured in Red and Tris has 8 words coloured in Blue, we are giving you codewords to try and get you to guess our words without guessing the other words on the grid

You will essentially be doing what Save The Dragons, Charles510, StrangerCoug just did with my word.
So you see I gave the word Dark and then the number 5.
This means that there are 5 Red words on the board that I believe are related to the word Dark.

As a team they discussed what words I could be hinting towards and settled on Space as 1 of the words and guessed it and were correct, they then guessed the word Torch and that word was incorrect.

You get a number of guesses equal to the number I give+1, but if you make a mistake then it automatically passes to the other team.

Tl;Dr: When Tris gives you a word and a number, discuss with Farren and Sirius about what words on the board could be related to that word and when your team is happy with a word, make a guess

Nancy, that's perfectly fine, I shall put you into the queue for clue giving as well. There's a couple of people already in the queue already though so it'll be in a couple of games time

Before I forget, it was noted to me about there being discussion in a previous game about putting in a rule about no discussing clues between clues being given (ie the time between when the other team have passed and your clue master has given their new clue)
What's everyone thoughts on this? Shall I make this an official rule in our ruleset?

RULE CHANGES!!

So, I've just gone through and cleaned up the rules section a bit whilst adding the new rules, it's now divided into 3 sections (Field Operatives/Spymaster/Other Stuff)
All players are expected to have read through the role they're playing and the other stuff section!

I have added in the following rules:
FO.5: You may not discuss past clues whilst waiting for your spymaster to give a new clue.
S.5: If you feel like a clue might not be 100% legal, you may message the other spymaster and ask for their approval, if they approve then it is a legal clue in any case. If they disapprove but you still think it should be legal, you may message me and I'll make a final ruling on it.
OS.2: Any player or spymaster may call out either an illegal clue or a rule break, to do so please put in bold PAUSE GAME and say why you paused the game. At this point nobody should discuss clues or anything. Please then ping me on discord and I'll come and resolve the issue. If you're unsure please pause the game anyway and I'll happily intervene. For illegal clues the opposing spymaster always has the choice to allow the game to carry on.
OS.3: If you're not playing, you must not call out any illegal clues, it is down to the players themselves.
(Reason for this rule is that it is a valid strategy to try and get away with submitting an illegal clue in the hopes of not being caught out)
OS.4: If you wish for a rule to be changed, please PM me and I'll bring it up as a topic of discussion between games. Rules will not change during a game.

I'm afraid to say, if the spymaster gives a clue that nobody understands then that's unfortunate and a risk the spymaster has taken when giving a difficult clue.

If not then the spymaster could give a super obscure clue that relates perfectly to the words needed with the knowledge that if nobody knows it then they'd be able to google it.

For full transparency, The Bulge messaged me saying that their original post was to say that it's still their turn but edited it after realising that spymasters shouldn't be talking in thread

I will say, that posts like that are fine, as long as its not intended to help by suggesting what a team should do.

Just gonna explain for newer players:

Rather than giving a number, a spymaster may say Infinity.

This gives you as many guesses as you wish on the particular clue but you do not know how many words are relating to the clue given, you do know that at least 1 word will be related.

The purpose of this is to allow you the extra guesses to pick up any previous words from previous clues

An alternative clue type is 0, a clue master may say the word and then 0, this also gives you unlimited guesses but the clue given relates to none of your words.

By unlimited guesses, it's until you get a guess wrong as per normal guessing rules

(it's exactly 48 hours from when Haschel said Red!)

I'll give a little prod to The Bulge, just keep in mind that whilst yes it's courteous to have all players agree, the point of the timer was to keep the game moving along even if not all players are checking in. So you are welcome to make a guess without having all players agree to it and if a player hasn't checked in in time and disagrees with it then it's on them for not checking in enough

Whilst I appreciate it's frustrating not having everyone around, there's not a lot I can do, it's the players responsibility to keep checking in to this game and I'm not gonna force players to do so.

In my opinion Codenames is meant to be a more chilled Mish Mash game and that's one of the perks of having bigger teams.

If people disagree with this then feel free to shoot me a DM and I'll bring it up as a topic of conversation post game and we can look at changing some rules to bring in some prod rules or something. As one of the past mods of the game... sorry. The "no Google" rule used not to be explicit, but I had never intended it to be allowed. I made the ban explicit after a few players used it and were unaware that doing so was getting "outside help" as I understood it. It's also something the current mod has addressed before. So consider this my vote against.

Looks like everything was sorted anyway, but yes exactly what Strangercoug said, this is something that's been addressed before and I stand by it.

I could be tempted however to do a 1 off game at some point where googling is not only allowed but encouraged.
I remember talking to someone a little while ago who told me of a group who played codenames by googling absolutely everything and getting the perfect clues and stuff and we said that it really sucks the human element out of the game. But that it would be quite an interesting game to try one time. So yeah after this round I'm gonna ask people what they think to having a silly game where googling is allowed

A couple of things I wanna discuss before starting the next game:

1) How would people feel about having a 1-off game of googling allowed where spy's and guessers are allowed to google things and try to find the very perfect word!
-If I got enough people interested in it then I'd run it as Game 45 and I'd have spymasters who purposely sign up for it and not use the ones in queue for this round

2) There was talk of prodding rules and stuff, how would people feel on the following rule: Spymasters may prod their own players if they wish to do so, said prod must only be a message saying that it's a prod and nothing else

Okay so sounds like a resounding no on having a special google game, tbh I agree but it sounded like a fun idea I figured I'd throw it out there.

Farren does have a great suggestion though, what'd people think about having a game of Codenames Duet? maybe even as a competition style thing where we have loads of pairs, each pair has the same grid and we see which pair can win in the fewest moves? I had something like this planned out for a Survivor challenge once but never got round to putting it into a game haha
So yeah, if people are down for it I'd be happy to run it for game 45 instead.

For those who don't know, duet is a 2 player co-op variant in which you take turns being spymaster for the same grid and you're trying to help each other find all 15 correct words, but you only have 9 words each (some of the words overlap).

Also, I'm gonna rule it that anyone is allowed to send a PM to a player on their team saying: "It's our teams turn!" and nothing else in the message
So it's kinda like a prod/a reminder. I will say though, please don't over use it to the point of annoying a player, 1 reminder per round and you should post in the thread to say you've done the reminder so that others don't also send a reminder.

Game 45 - Codenames Duet!

I'll sort out a full rules later but here's a summary so that people can discuss signing up.

The next game will be a special game in which everyone will play in pairs, you will be working together as a pair to find 15 agents on the board.

I'm gonna allow people to pick their own pairs if they wish and then I'll randomise the remaining players to pair up

Each pair will play on the exact same board with the same words and you'll be competing against the other pairs to who can get all 15 agents in the fewest clues with the fewest mistakes

Codenames Duet

Even if you know Codenames, please read these rules as Duet is played very differently.

In Codenames duet, you will be playing as a pair trying to collectively find every agent on the board, you will know half of the agents and your partner will know the other half

Twenty-five code name cards, each bearing a word, are laid out in a 5×5 rectangular grid, in random order. Both you and your partner will have a private grid card showing the locations of your agents, on your grid you will have 9 agents (green), 3 assassins (black) and the rest are innocent bystanders (white). Your goal is to find 15 agents between you (3 of the words will be agents in both grids).

You will take turns being clue-givers and giving clues relating to the locations of agents from your own grid (whilst you are the clue-giver, only your grid matters).

Words given must follow standard codenames word rules, please check the rules in post 0 to find out what words are legal and illegal. You may ask me if a word is legal if you're unsure (I request you use discord where possible for this as I'll be quicker to respond there)

The guesser may make as many guesses as they want providing that they are always guessing correctly, upon 1 failed guess the turn passes and clue-givers are swapped, you may also decide to just simply pass your turn.
Incorrect guessed words may still be guessed by your partner, these words are not out of the game completely

To make a clue, guess or pass turn you must make it clear by doing it in capitals e.g: CLUE: WEATHER-2, GUESS: STORM, PASS TURN.
You may make a list of guesses in 1 post however you must order them in the order in which you are planning to have them revealed, if an earlier guess is incorrect then the rest of your guesses are ignored. E.g if you guessed BLUE, STORM and blue was wrong then the turn passes to your partner and we don’t find out whether storm is correct.

Either player may go first, just simply the first to find a good starting clue, you keep playing the game until you have managed to find all 15 agents. Clue-givers must alternate between turns unless one clue-giver has run out of agents on their board, at this point they must state this to their partner (Until this moment you may never state how many agents you have left to find)

Rules of communication: When you are the clue giver, you may only post in the thread to post your clue and to say whether a word is right or wrong. When you are the guesser, you may post your thoughts into the thread about which words you believe are related to the clue, but that's all you're allowed to talk about.

This game will be judged on strikes with the teams on the lowest strikes winning, the strikes are as follows:
1 strike for every clue given
1 strike for every innocent bystander hit
10 strikes for every assassin hit
2 strikes for any illegal clue given (as described above)(This is as well as the standard 1 point for giving a clue)(You may purposely give an illegal clue if you believe it will be cost-effective on points)

Every pair will be playing the exact same setup, this will be both the words on the grid and which words are agents/assassins.

The games will be self-moderated, so you tell your partner when they get words right or wrong and adjust the grids accordingly.

Failure to submit an action 48 hours after the previous action will result in a time token, in the event of a tie the team with the fewest time tokens will win... This tiebreaker will be the first tiebreaker looked at. You may prod your partner at any time.
A player may pause their game if they need to go on V/LA for whatever reason (but please don't abuse this, only use it if you need to)

The pair with the fewest strikes will win, if there's a tie then the following tie-breakers are taken into consideration:
The pair with the best individual clue given (e.g giving a clue for 4 words and all 4 being guessed)
The pair with the most agents found in 1 turn (regardless of the clue number)

Secrets of the grid card:
All grid cards are designed according to the below diagram, you may use this to your advantage

From the 9 words you see as being green, 3 of them are also green on your partners grid card, either of you may guess these words.
From the 3 words you see as being black, 1 of them is green on your partners card, meaning that you must guess one of your black words, however 1 of your black words is also black on your partners card and the other one is white.

Hmm, good point

I should note that when I first came up with the points system for this game mode, it was based around using it as a Survivor tribe challenge and thus all the points were added together across the whole tribe

10 strikes for hitting an assassin, that way we can still rank those who hit Assassins against each other

Rules of communication, I think I'll allow players to talk through their thinking, just like they would normally however you can't mention your own grid as part of your reasoning

Fun fact... Green is a disgusting colour on PT threads

Feel free to change the green to a different colour as long as its clear what colour is what

Also keep in mind that a card being neutral on 1 side, might still be green on the other, you might want to use something other than crossing out to show that a neutral was hit, maybe use a different colour depending on who hit the neutral

In any case, the boards are yours and you're welcome to colour them how you wish as long as its clear what's being guessed

Fair enough, I think as a first ever play through of it, it was a success and it's helpful to know places where rules can be locked down further and be more clear.

I know some pairs said that they enjoyed this version of the game and as such I'd be happy to run it again in the future (although after another load of regular codenames cos everyone loves that haha)

I also could see this being a good survivor challenge that I would love to see someone run

Btw, I didn't bother looking into any time tokens because no team ended up tying, but it was there mainly as a threat anyway and if a team had tied then I would've actually looked into it haha

As Cat Scratch says, the Red teams turn was over automatically as you can only make a number of guesses = to the clue number given +1
This is the main purpose of Infinate and 0 clues, is if your team has a lot of unresolved clues, they then get the extra guesses to go back and get

Proper Nouns is basically the name of something, technically the capitalized is only important if there is a definition of that word that isn't about the name.
For example the word "trump" is a valid clue if you're talking about beating someone at something, or talking about games...it wouldn't be a valid clue if you're trying to talk about presidents.

For your example: beatles wouldn't be fine but beetle would be (it's a different spelling), beatles is the band and beetle is the bug

Keep in mind that Proper Nouns is a flexible rule and as such, if people want to allow them then I'm happy for people to discuss it and if there's a consensus then we can allow them. It is probably the one flexible rule that gets broken the most so I could understand if people want to change this one.

Also, I've now written up the Legal/Illegal clues into Post 0 including the Flexible rules

I have also added in a couple of bullet points on prodding:
-All players may send prods/reminders to anyone on their team. You can only prod each player once per round and when you do so you must post in the thread that you have done it to avoid multiple prods. A prod must consist of the phrase: "It's our teams turn" and nothing else. If a player hasn't checked in then the game should still continue and the other players should guess words instead.
-It is not my responsibility to prod your players, I will not interfere with an ongoing game unless it is a rules clarification.

Also, gonna rule on having balanced teams and people only inning for games for the sake of balancing teams (cos there's now multiple people who've said they'll happily sit out)

If teams are unbalanced then the last player to sign up will sit out (unless someone has said that they are willing to sit out), however a player won't sit out of 2 games in a row (unless they insist on it). This games current sit out is The Worst.

This is mainly to stop 1 player from missing out on loads of games for being too kind.
