The List

Image
Previous iterations by Xalxe and ShadowLurker

Welcome to The List, a game where challenge skills and social game combine in a truly unique way to determine a winner.

General Rules:

01)
This is a game. The main objective is to have fun; so no excessive flaming, spamming, or submission of anything else prohibited within the MS forums.
02)
This is a game. The secondary objective is to win.
03)
My modding is not infallible, so if I make a mistake, please point it out and I will try and correct it before anyone else notices, before acting like it never happened.
04)
Private communication with any players in the game is allowed and encouraged.
05)
Exercise common sense. If you are unsure as to whether an action conflicts with the rules, ask.

Game Mechanics (aka the important stuff):

06)
Each round will occur in three phases: making of lists, a challenge, and then the reveals. In the List phase, players will rank all other players in order of how much they would like to save them in the reveals from most to least. The Challenge phase is exactly what it sounds like, all players complete a standard challenge.
07)
Following these two parts are the Reveals phase. First, I will go through and reveal the challenge results in order. The player who comes in last place will immediately be eliminated. Then, players will be saved based on their lists. The top N/2 - 1 players will automatically be safe, and from best to worst they will save the highest-ranked player on their list that is not yet safe. After all those players have chosen someone, one player will be left - that person is eliminated. (So two players will be eliminated per round.)
08)
Generally 24 hours will be given for each List phase and 24 hours will be given for each Challenge phase (in general). Many early-game deadlines will be extended to 48 hours, along with some later-game ones for my own scheduling purposes.
09)
If you fail to submit a list, your list will be randomized. If you fail to submit for a challenge, you will automatically be eliminated. (If multiple players miss a Challenge phase, the eliminated player will be chosen randomly.) If you need a short extension for a phase, please reach out and I will probably grant it.
10)
Once only two players remain, the players that placed from 3rd to 11th place will have 48 hours to question the final two and vote for the winner of the game. The player with the most votes will be the winner.
11)
A living player may not communicate with an eliminated player about the game.

The game is designed for 16 players, but it can be played with any number of players (as long as we have at least 12 players). If we have an odd number of players, the first round will only have a single elimination determined by lists, skipping the elimination of the last place finisher. If more are interested, they will be accommodated though I make no guarantees about the quality of challenges until 16 players remain.

If you're interested in playing, please /in via PM! The game will begin on Wednesday at 9pm EDT, in (expired on 2021-04-21 21:00:00).

Just over 24 hours left to sign up! We’re at 12 players, so the game is officially set to start. But I’m happy to take more players if there are still interested players that haven’t signed up yet!

Also, I updated Rule 8 just to clarify that some deadlines will be extended and that I won't do any combined List/Challenge deadlines. Figured that if I can't make it (which is why I was planning on combining stuff) I may as well just extend the deadline.

About to post the challenge but I wanted to clarify that
you may not send quotes of conversations you have with players or with me to other players
. Paraphrasing is okay but direct-quoting more than a few words is not.

Challenge 1: The Wiki Game

Let’s get started with a challenge! Your first challenge is a classic that I ran the last time I modded an anonymous game on here, the Wiki Game! The game can be practiced at your own free will at this link: http://www.thewikigame.com/ (or, I suppose, by randomly generating Wikipedia pages). However, the challenge will not require use of that website. When you choose to begin, you will submit a Google Form that will keep track of your time and link you to the actual challenge.

When you get there, you’ll see three pairs of Wikipedia pages. Using only Wikipedia links found on each page, you must find a way to navigate from the starting page to the ending page. To submit, you will list all of the pages in the path for each pair, in order, in the Google Form, stopping the clock. Either the physical links or the full titles of the pages can be given. Whoever completes the most chains correctly in the fastest time (regardless of the length of the chains) will win the challenge, and will get the first chance to save another player. From there, players will be ranked by number of correct chains and then time to submit.

Use of Wikipedia is obviously encouraged (and you’re free to take notes either on a computer or on paper), however no other outside resources are allowed. Based on results the last time I ran this challenge, I would not expect this to take longer than an hour.

EXAMPLE: If the pages you need to connect are Stephen Colbert and Ural Mountains, a chain could be:
Stephen Colbert
Washington, D.C.
United States
Russian Empire
Ural Mountains

Since this is the first round, you’ll have 48 hours ((expired on 2021-04-25 20:00:00)) to begin the challenge. You will start the clock by completing this form. Please let me know if you have any questions or issues!

As long as you can get to the list of lists of lists from somewhere else (or that's the start for one of the prompts) then that's fair game!

Results time!

I’m going to just do the anti-climactic bit of this now because I don’t want to do it at the end. Unfortunately, one player failed to start the challenge, meaning they will be eliminated.

Spoiler: That player is…
ButItsLegalInJapan

And now since we don’t have to get that out of the way, we can start from the bottom. Every player was able to get all three links correct, so good job!

The best links that you all submitted were Fungus - Greek Language - Syria - Syrians, Gauntlet II - Arcade Game - Cricket, and Isle of Man - United Kingdom - Sherlock Holmes - Fencing - Glove. Congrats to the five players that submitted at least one of those links.

Spoiler: In thirteenth place, with a time of 24:25…
MURDERCAT

Spoiler: In twelfth place, with a time of 22:45...
Save the Dragons

Spoiler: In eleventh place, with a time of 21:35…
Silverclaw

Spoiler: In tenth place, with a time of 19:35…
Racefan12

Spoiler: In ninth place, with a time of 17:22…
Mist7676

Spoiler: In eighth place, with a time of 15:57…
Noraa

Spoiler: In seventh place, with the last non-safe position and a time of 14:32…
Raya36

Spoiler: In sixth place, with the first safe position and a time of 13 minutes flat…
Xofelf

Spoiler: In fifth place, with a time of 12:26…
Cheery Dog

Spoiler: In fourth place, with a time of 11:46…
NotAJumbleOfNumbers

Spoiler: Squeaking into third place, with a time of 11:41…
Cephrir

Spoiler: And our winner, with a blistering 7:59…
Xalxe will have the first choice of who to save! Aronis came in second with a time of 11:14.

And with that, we have our six safe players and seven players for them to save. Time to find out who’ll be the odd one out.

Spoiler: Xalxe has consulted his list and chosen to save…
Noraa

Spoiler: Aronis has consulted his list and chosen to save…
Raya36

Spoiler: Cephrir has consulted his list and chosen to save…
Silverclaw

Spoiler: NotAJumbleOfNumbers has consulted his list and chosen to save…
MURDERCAT

Spoiler: Cheery Dog has consulted his list and chosen to save…
Save the Dragons

Spoiler: And lastly, Xofelf has consulted their list and chosen to save…
Racefan12!

Which leaves Mist7676 as the odd person out. The Lists have spoken.

To the remaining players, it’s time to make another List. Just eleven players will be on your list this time. You will have just 24 hours for this phase, so please get your lists to me by (expired on 2021-04-26 20:00:00).

Round 2 Challenge: Eyeballing in the New Age

When I joined the site nearly ten years ago, there were two seminal challenges that reared their heads over and over again. One was Ready, Aim, Fire, which unfortunately is too difficult to adapt to a game of this form (and yes, this is the ONLY reason it wasn’t included). The other was Woodgears Eyeballing, an online game in which players were to identify (as well as possible) geometric points such as the center of a circle, the middle of a line, or the intersection of multiple lines. While this game still exists online, I’ve adapted it to the new age for today’s challenge.

When you submit the form to start the challenge, you will end up on a new form with eight eyeballing/estimation type tasks, two of four different types: identifying a distance on a Google Map, determining the size of a list of MafiaScum-related elements given a segment of this list (plus starting and ending criteria), determining the character count (excluding spaces) of a segment of text, and determining the fraction of a pie chart that’s filled in.

Your job is to complete all eight of these tasks as well as possible in a limited amount of time,
ten minutes
. Your score will be the sum of the difference (in percent) between your submission and the correct answer for each of the eight tasks. For example, if you submit 165 and the correct answer is 100, you are off 65% and will score 65 points. You cannot score more than 100 points for a task, even if you submit more than double the correct answer. The player with the lowest score will win the challenge and the player with the highest score will be eliminated. If you fail to complete the challenge in the ten minutes, you will automatically finish last unless another player takes even longer before submitting. If there is a tie for placement then the player who completed the task faster will be ranked higher.

No outside resources OF ANY TYPE are allowed while you’re on the clock for this challenge. That includes pen and paper, calculators, ways to measure pixels, access to other websites or other subforums of MS, and anything else you can think of.

NOTE: Some of the images may be slightly difficult to read, though they can likely be blown up relatively well by zooming in. For the pie charts, you will need to be able to distinguish blue from two shades of gray. Please let me know beforehand if this may be an issue for you and I should be able to accommodate in some capacity or find samples to see if it will be a problem.

The challenge starting form is found HERE. Deadline is in (expired on 2021-04-28 20:00:00).

Real question:
determining the size of a list of MafiaScum-related elements given a segment of this list (plus starting and ending criteria)
Any chance you can clarify what this means, or is it a surprise challenge that will vex us later

(I like this modern iteration on a classic!)
Sure (since nobody has started yet) - I'm going to give you a screenshot of a portion of a list of something site-related. I'll tell you what the full list represents, and you'll need to tell me how many elements are in it.

For a non-site-related example, say, I could give you this:
Image
and tell you that this is a portion of the list of prime numbers in increasing order, and then ask you how many prime numbers fall between 500 and 1000.

God dammit

If you’re not playing the game, don’t submit the start form without identifying yourself until after the challenge, because if you don’t do that then I don’t know if you’re a player that’s cheating

If you just submitted the start form with the code word “bagel” please tell me who you are so that I don’t have to kill and redo the challenge

EDIT: This has been resolved, sorry for any confusion

Results are in! Everybody submitted, so there's no easy elimination for us to go for this time.

Spoiler: Answers
(For 1 and 2, I got the correct answers by counting the pixels between the two centers of the dots and then the length of the interval in pixels; then I used those to get the distance between the points. I did this twice for each map and took the average result, to get more accurate results.)
1: 9270 ft
2: 558 m
3: 1953 characters
4: 913 characters
5: 1871 users
6: 816 posts
7: 75.87%
8: 19.06%
(In retrospect I realize that the scoring system I used for 7 and 8 probably wasn't the best, but I didn't feel comfortable changing that arbitrarily.)

Now let's get to results! Remember that lower scores are better, and the highest (worst) possible score is 800.

Spoiler: In 7th place, with a score of 238...
MURDERCAT

Spoiler: In 6th place, with a score of 214...
Noraa

Spoiler: Getting the last guaranteed spot in the Final Ten, in 5th place, with a score of 192...
Racefan12

Spoiler: In 4th place, with a score of 176...
Raya36

Spoiler: In 3rd place, with a score of 149...
Xofelf

Spoiler: In 2nd place, with a score of 124...
Cephrir

Spoiler: And our winner, getting the first choice of who to save with a score of 110...
Aronis!

Spoiler: In 8th place, with a score of 243...
NotAJumbleOfNumbers

Spoiler: In 9th place, with a score of 305...
Save the Dragons

Spoiler: In 10th place, with a score of 347...
Xalxe

Spoiler: In 11th place, staving off elimination with a score of 391...
Silverclaw is safe!

This means that with a score of 463, Cheery Dog has been eliminated from The List.

Lists are coming right up!

Five more spots in the Final Ten, six players looking to get them. Who will make it to fight another day?

Spoiler: Aronis has consulted his list and chosen to save...
Noraa!

Spoiler: Cephrir has consulted his list and chosen to save...
Save the Dragons!

Spoiler: Xofelf has consulted their list and chosen to save...
MURDERCAT!

Spoiler: Raya36 has consulted her list and chosen to save...
Silverclaw!

Spoiler: And lastly, Racefan12 has consulted his list and chosen to save...
Xalxe!

Which leaves NotAJumbleOfNumbers as the odd person out. The Lists have spoken; Jumble will be our first Juror.

Round 3! Down to nine players on each of your lists. Additionally, we have our first juror; all remaining players here on out will also have a say in determining the winner of this game once only two players are left. Deadline will be tomorrow at 8pm, in (expired on 2021-04-29 20:00:00).

Round 3 Challenge: Be The Very Best

It’s been a while since the last Pokemon themed game in Mish Mash, so I figured I would do my part to get us back to the old days! In this challenge, you will have to answer several questions using the Pokemon type chart, which can be found here: https://i.gyazo.com/972f9854d42358020ca ... 93e445.png
You may freely access this chart during the challenge, and you will likely need to. All of the questions can be answered with this chart alone; no additional knowledge of Pokemon will be necessary for this challenge.

As a summary of how this works, Pokemon have up to two types and moves have one type. The damage from a move is multiplied by the weaknesses and resistances of the Pokemon being attacked, such that an attack will do 0%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, or 400% its standard damage. An attack that does 25% or 50% damage is called Not Very Effective, and an attack that does 200% or 400% damage is called Super Effective.

You’ll start this challenge by submitting a Google Form to start your time. You’ll then be linked to a second Google Form, where you’ll need to answer fifteen multiple-choice questions, of various types, using the type chart provided above. The player who answers the most questions correctly in the fastest time will win the challenge, with the others being ranked in terms of their number of correct questions (with time used as a tiebreaker) to determine the eliminated player and the order of saving people.

I would not expect this challenge to take longer than half an hour. The starting form is found HERE. Deadline is Saturday at 8pm, in (expired on 2021-05-01 20:00:00). Good luck!

Just a note that you're welcome to recreate the chart yourself (or find another version of it) if you'd like, since it's fairly blurry. Just make sure you do it properly or find a version of it that's correct!

It's come to my attention that (at least) one question has more than one correct answer. I'll accept either correct answer for that question (or any others that come up - I'm checking all incorrect answers as I receive them to confirm that there aren't more issues). Sorry for the mistake.

Round 4 Challenge: Daily Fantasy Challenge

It’s time for a challenge years in the making...the Daily Fantasy Challenge! For those of you that don’t know, Daily Fantasy Sports are based on the building of a lineup of athletes across several teams, playing in different matches of a given sport on the same day. Each athlete scores points for their individual stats (things like hits and RBIs in baseball, or yards gained in football), and the person that makes the roster that scores the most points wins. Generally this is played as pseudo-gambling with cash buy-ins and prizes, but today we’ll be playing it for safety! (This challenge has been reviewed by everyone's favorite DFS expert, pickemgenius.)

(Yes, I’m really just hoping that the reason MLS flopped was because you had to spend two weeks making a roster whereas this is only a couple days.)
Please don't hate me, I've been asking for someone to do this in a game for five years and nobody has done it, so here I am

The slate we’ll be using for this competition is the slate of three NBA games
starting at 8pm EDT on Tuesday, May 4
. The matchups occurring on this day and at this time are as follows:

Golden State Warriors @ New Orleans Pelicans
Dallas Mavericks @ Miami Heat
Sacramento Kings @ Oklahoma City Thunder

Scoring criteria are as follows:

Points scored: 1 point each
Assists: 1.5 points each
Blocks: 3 points each
Rebounds: 1.2 points each
Steals: 3 points each
Turnovers: -1 point each

You are to assemble a six-athlete roster that includes one athlete from each of the following positions, and then one additional athlete of any position (a “utility player”). The sum of their salaries must not exceed
$40,000
(however, they can be less than this if desired). You must select
exactly six
athletes, you may not select more or fewer. Additionally, you may not select more than three athletes playing on the same team. The list of available athletes is as follows. (This list is a selection of the active athletes on each team playing in the slate and ideally targets the best athletes at each position.)

Dwight Powell, Mavericks, $3500
Willie Cauley-Stein, Mavericks, $3500
Boban Marjanovic, Mavericks, $3500
Eric Paschall, Warriors, $3500

An example lineup would be:
PG:
Nico Mannion, Warriors, $3500
SG:
Josh Green, Mavericks, $3500
SF:
Louis King, Kings, $3500
PF:
Precious Achiuwa, Heat, $3500
C:
Willie Cauley-Stein, Mavericks, $3500
UTIL:
Eric Paschall, Warriors, $3500
(This lineup is intentionally awful; if you submit it as your own you almost certainly will finish in last.)

Rosters are due via PM at the start of the slate, 8pm on Tuesday ((expired on 2021-05-04 20:00:00)). You may submit as many times as you’d like; I will take only your last submission before the deadline. Once all games conclude, I will tally up the score for each roster, and the player with the highest-scoring roster will win the challenge. Should there be a tie, the tiebreakers will be in order:

1: The player whose roster cost the least money wins.
2: The player whose best-scoring athlete scored the most points wins.
3: The player whose worst-scoring athlete scored the most points wins.
4: Repeat 2 and 3, starting with second-best and second-worst, eventually breaking the tie unless both players’ rosters had the same athletes or athletes who had the same scores.
5: The player who submitted their roster earlier wins.

Any FREE outside resources are allowed; you may not pay to access any resources or use any you have previously paid for for the challenge (obviously this isn’t meant to be interpreted as “I pay my ISP for Internet access, guess I have to read the newspaper for stats”).
I strongly recommend that you do at least a small amount of research for this challenge.

Some recommendations for this challenge:
1: NBA news tends to break very close to the start times for the games. As such, there is no harm in waiting until very close to the deadline to submit your roster (but to counteract this, one of the tiebreakers is the player that submitted their roster earlier).
2: Matchups do matter for points! If a game is close, the good players on each team will play more of the game. If it’s a runaway for one team or the other, there’s a good chance that both teams will sit their best players at the end. However, any team can beat any other team, so counting on a matchup to be close may not be a smart move.
3: https://www.dailyfantasyfuel.com/nba?platform=fd is a source that I recommend for this challenge, especially once it updates with the correct games
about 20 hours before the games tip off
. You will want to adjust “Next Slate” to get at the right games; leave the option above it set to FanDuel (FanDuel and DraftKings will have different scoring and athlete costs; the systems outlined above are for FanDuel). However, keep in mind that the games we’re using are a subset of the games that will appear in any Next Slate. Also, since we’re using a custom roster size, the optimizer tool will not give you a valid roster.
4: “Stacking” your roster with athletes on the same team is a potential strategy (though you may not include more than three athletes from any one team). If you do this and one athlete assists on another’s shot, you’ll score even more points! Though it’s certainly not the only way to go, especially in basketball.
5: If you're not sure whether or not your lineup is valid, I'm more than happy to check it if you send it to me over Discord or PM. My schedule except for Tuesday late morning/early afternoon is almost completely free, so I should be able to respond quickly.

Baseball is considerably less predictable as a DFS sport, unfortunately.

By the way
feel free to discuss strategy but don’t discuss specific players please

The DailyFantasyFuel page listed in the challenge rules post is now updated with projections for tomorrow, but the prices there are slightly changed from the official prices being used for the challenge so be sure your lineup is valid with the set of prices in the rules post.

I’ve been asked to clarify this - DvP is a stat that ranks the opposing team by how many fantasy points they give up to opposing players at their position on average. 1 is the worst (ie. best opposing defense), 30 is the best (ie. worst opposing defense).

Also - I took each of your rosters, got rid of injured players, and used the optimizer to fill them out into full-FanDuel rosters that I submitted into the nickel-entry contest they're hosting. I'll report back if any of your lineups do well!

Bam Adebayo - C - 41.3 (8300)

And congrats to Racefan for submitting the only lineup that (after being filled out to 9 slots using the optimizer) was in the money in the real contest! Cephrir's finished 0.3 points off of the money line. MURDERCAT finished 3rd, Xalxe finished 4th, Noraa 5th, Raya 6th, StD 7th, Xofelf 8th (though these don't mean that much considering between 3 and 6 of the 9 players on these lineups were chosen by the optimizer).

Round 5 Challenge

Your second-to-last challenge is called A Civil Engineer’s Dream for reasons that will be apparent very soon.

For this challenge, you’ll need to complete two puzzles: a skyscrapers puzzle and a bridges (Hashi) puzzle - which probably explains why the challenge is named as it is. You can find the rules and practice each of these kinds of puzzles HERE and HERE respectively. I will not disclose the sizes of the puzzles that you’ll be doing, but I have selected an EASY skyscrapers puzzle and a NORMAL bridges puzzle.

You will need an image editor to complete the puzzles, using your image editor to put numbers into each cell for the skyscrapers puzzle and to draw lines for the bridges puzzle. You will be ranked by the time it takes you to complete each of these puzzles and submit pictures of the completed puzzles into a second Google Form. You may
not
use any outside resources for this challenge.

You’ll start the clock by submitting THIS FORM. You have until 8pm on Friday ((expired on 2021-05-07 20:00:00)) to begin the challenge.

Congratulations on making the final four this is a huge accomplishment in the game of The List. Your final list will only be three players long...it's due tomorrow at 10:30pm EDT ((expired on 2021-05-08 22:30:00)). If all players indicate that they'd like to accelerate the deadline when they submit, then I'll post the challenge once I have all three lists.

Round 6 Challenge: Sprint to the Finish

Welcome to the final challenge. When this is done, we will know our fourth-place finisher, and the winner of this challenge will have the important decision of choosing who will join them in the Finale based on their list in this round.

This challenge is pretty simple - here’s how it is going to work. When you start, you’ll be presented with three questions. These might be about the game, or general knowledge trivia, or really just about anything else, but you
are
allowed to use outside sources in order to answer them. Each of these three questions has only two possible answers. The first answer will correspond to one of two Your World Of Text pages, the second will correspond to an x-coordinate (horizontal) on that YWOT grid, and the third will correspond to a y-coordinate (vertical) on that grid. You’ll use your answers to the three questions to identify the correct position on the correct YWOT page. Once you end up there, you’ll have one final task to complete. You’ll submit whatever is necessary for that task into the finishing form, and then your clock will stop. There are “incorrect” tasks at all eight possible locations, so make sure you answer the questions right!

(You can use the menu at the extreme top right of the YWOT page to have it show coordinates; I highly recommend you do this.)

The player who completes this sequence in the fastest time will win the challenge. Should any players fail to complete the challenge properly, their scores will depend on how far they got into the challenge (eg. a player who gets to the correct YWOT position and grid, but fails the task there, will score better than a player who got a question wrong and thus went to the wrong YWOT position, who will score better than a player who got two questions wrong and went to a “more wrong” YWOT position). You have until Sunday at 8pm EDT ((expired on 2021-05-09 20:00:00)) to begin the challenge; the start form is found HERE.

Please have an image editor at the ready for the final task, and be advised that mobile devices do not interact particularly well with the YWOT website. Please do not make any edits to the YWOT websites.

Results! For the last time this game, let's see how y'all did.

Spoiler: Answers
1) Three
2) "the"
3) Over 30

This should've directed you to (+25, +25) on the "thefinalchallenge" page, where you had to solve a 6x4 slide puzzle that I was pretty sure was 6x6 when I found the link to it (sorry MURDERCAT!). The incorrect tasks were word searches, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku puzzles, and a different slide puzzle that was actually 6x6.

Spoiler: In third place, completing the correct task in 16:40...
Xalxe!

Spoiler: And in fourth place, completing an incorrect task in 16:39...
Save the Dragons. I'm sorry, but this is the end of the road for you.

Spoiler: Our winner, completing the correct task in 12:27...
MURDERCAT is going to the finale!

Which means Cephrir finished in second place, completing the correct task in 15:33.

bitter juror™ wrote:Dear finalists,

You both suck

You both played this game without any integrity, honesty, and character. The fact that I have to vote for either one of you makes me want to vomit. You’re literally the bottom of the barrel in terms of good LSG players on MS and the way you treated me was horrifying. You should be ashamed. You literally called the other jurors peasants and pawns and that really just shows how you treat people--as worthless tools to be used and discarded. If either of you had shown any remorse for your actions in this game i would’ve gladly given you my vote, but of course you lack any sense of self reflection to see how awful you were. I can only echo the other jurors who called you “heartless,” “sickening,” and “unworthy.” the world certainly wont be a better place with either of you having a million dollars in your hands. I hope you get taxed to hell. Its where you belong after all.

Nonetheless, I cast my vote to win for...
