Overview & Flavor Explanation

Mysterium is a cooperative and asymmetric mystery solving game. Six psychic players will perform a seven hour seance with one disoriented ghost player. The ghost wants to help the psychics uncover the truth of the ghost's murder. The six psychics periodically receive flashes of insight from the ghost. Each psychic follows their own line of inquiry by first identifying a suspect and then reconstructing the suspect's activities.

If all six psychics correctly identify the suspect, location, and object for their respective lines of inquiry within the time limit, the ghost will be able to recall the killer's identity and will present the players with a final shared vision. The psychics will vote on the correct line of inquiry based on this final vision. If the culprit is correctly identified, everyone wins!

Types of Cards

This game uses 4 types of art cards. At the start of the game, each psychic player is randomly assigned a Suspect, Location, and Object that they will need to identify over the course of the game. The ghost will be informed of these assignments and use vision cards as clues to help the psychic players.

This game uses personalized collages for the Suspects, photographs for the Locations, and avatars for the Objects. (See the Original Post.)

Phase 1 - Reconstruction of Events

Phase 1 will have up to 7 rounds that last up to a week each, also referred to as in-game hours.

Phase 1A - Ghostly Projections

The ghost player will have a hand of 7 vision cards. The ghost selects between 1 and 7 cards from their hand to assign to a psychic player of their choice. The psychic then redraws to 7 cards and selects another psychic of their choice to assign cards to. They will repeat this until all 6 psychics have been assigned at least one vision card. It is not possible to change card assignments once they have been made.

Three total times during the game, the ghost can choose to discard any or all of their vision cards to draw new ones. The mod will publicly reveal when this has occurred.

Phase 1B - Vision Interpretation

The moderator will publicly post the vision cards given to each psychic player. The psychic team has a few days to discuss this information in the game thread. Each psychic player makes the final decision about their own vision, but can use advice from other psychic players as they see fit. For Hour 1, all 6 psychic players will have a choice of 7 suspects. They will need to determine which specific suspect the ghost was trying to indicate.

Phase 1C - Clairvoyance

Psychic players are given 3 approval and 3 disapproval votes at the start of Hour 1. These refresh at Hour 4, so there is no downside to using them all up by the end of Hour 3. These votes are used to approve or disapprove of other psychics' choices after they have been finalized but before the results are revealed. If a psychic votes correctly, then their clairvoyance increases. Psychics reach clairvoyance level 2 by earning 5 points and reach level 3 by earning 7 points. Clairvoyance is helpful in Phase 2.

Phase 1D - Spectral Manifestation (End of the Hour)

During this phase, the mod will reveal on behalf of the ghost which psychics were correct. The mod will also update Clairvoyance totals. Once a psychic has identified their Suspect, they will next be receiving clues about their Location. Once they have found their Location, they must start trying to identify the correct Object.

Psychics who have completed their line of inquiry (by identifying the Suspect, Location and Object) may continue to discuss with other psychics as well as use clairvoyance votes. Psychics gain 1 point of Clairvoyance per remaining hour when their line of inquiry is completed.

Phase 2 - Revealing the Culprit

This phase only occurs if all 6 psychic players completed their lines of inquiry by the end of Hour 7. (Otherwise, the game just ends in a loss after Phase 1.)

Phase 2A - Shared Vision

1. The ghost still has their hand of 7 ghost cards and the capability to mulligan any number of cards in their hand 3 total times during the game. The ghost designates (to the Mod) which Suspect that the ghost feels is the culprit.
   
2. The ghost selects 3 vision cards to form the shared vision. One card should correspond to the Culprit suspect; one card should correspond to the Culprit's Location; one card should correspond to their Object.
   
3. The Mod will reveal these vision cards one at a time in a random order.

Phase 2B - Straw Poll

1. Once the first card has been revealed, psychics at Clairvoyance Level 1 will privately message the Mod their vote for which suspect is the culprit.
   
2. Psychics at Clairvoyance Level 2 get to see two cards before submitting their vote.
   
3. Psychics at Clairvoyance Level 3 get to see all the cards before submitting their vote.
   
4. If one suspect received more votes than the others, that suspect is deemed the culprit. If there is a tie, it is broken in favor of the player with the highest Clairvoyance. If there is still a tie, it is broken in favor of the player with the oldest join date on their MS account.

Endgame

The group wins if the correct culprit is identified in the straw poll. The mod reveals the result, the game is over, and the ghost can now speak freely.

Conduct Expectations

1. This is a cooperative game, meaning you win and lose as a group. Try to enjoy the journey and treat each other with respect.
2. While the game is ongoing (after signups), the ghost should never post in the thread or otherwise verbally communicate with the psychics. The Mod will be your liaison and confidante.
3. Psychics should never try to direct the ghost's future actions. There are breaking strategies that are very much against the spirit of the game that are possible through trying to direct the ghost in this way.
4. If a psychic misses a Vision Interpretation deadline, the Mod will request for another psychic to decide on their behalf. The Mod will seek replacement for a psychic that misses two Vision Interpetation deadlines.
5. If the ghost does not meet a Ghostly Projection deadline, the deadline will likely be extended. The ghost risks replacement if there are repeated issues with activity, particularly if not communicated about effectively. It is particularly important that the ghost be consistently able to meet their deadlines to keep the game progressing. The mod will help accommodate the ghost by setting the Ghostly Projection phase to the ghost's preferred days of the week at game start.

The game's difficulty setting is between easy and medium for the base game. One of the locations has been removed as an option due to having one fewer psychic.

It seems like it historically has been run about once a year around this time of year. I don't know if people who have modded it in the past are available to do so though!

Where'd you get the idea for this?

Espeonage suggested the previous game, which was Dixit with MS Telephone Pictionary art. Following that, chamber suggested trying a similar concept but with Mysterium. I really like Mysterium so I wanted to try to make that work.

What was the basis for the suspect/location/object cards?

Suspect cards were what I focused on first and spent the most time on. I brainstormed about some scummers who are associated with a particular face (usually from their avatar.) Then it was a matter of figuring out which ones can be associated with a lot of different things and fulfill some sort of individual niche. I leaned more into the background objects with my paint.net collages than the base game does because the base game suspects tend to be more obviously affiliated with some sort of occupation or hobby and thus easier to clue. Some examples of users that were also in consideration for inspiring a Suspect card that I didn't end up including were: xRECKONERx, FakeGod, Vi, pablito, shaft.ed (there just isn't a good enough larger version of his avatar anywhere!!!), PookyTheMagicalBear, Datisi and GeorgeBailey.

Objects were my next focus and easiest. I just went with avatars because they were similarly small to the base game objects. Right off the bat, I wanted to include Raskol's and Mina's, and then collected some more over time with SleepyKrew's help.

I got stuck on what to do about Locations for months. I wondered if I could teach myself to draw in perspective so that I could draw things like the "Speakeasy User Popularity Poll" and "DrippingGoofball's art and science lab" in a similar style to the base game. An alternative was to try to convince some people who already have that skill. Ultimately, I just couldn't be bothered! So, I reached out on the MS discord asking for advice on what to do instead. I got some from Silverclaw and lilith about possibly using images from Pinterest or inspired from past meets. I ended up deciding it was fine to just use photographs. Some of the locations were themed after the mafia subforums (Coney Island, Central Park, and the last-minute-cut Mayfair Club). Some were past meet locations (the actual kitchen from Survivormeet 3; a Disney World spot; also an escape room and planetarium because I've personally been to those at meets). Finally, we had a med student's desk (inspired by lalaladucks's discussion thread about studying).

How did you choose the Telephone Pictionary art to include?

Uhhh honestly I went through every chain on the wiki and saved 300-something pictures that I thought were contenders. This time I named them by artist, game and chain title to make it easy to give credit later (learning from my Dixit mistakes where I begged Ether for help a few times because of my inability to find this info later). I narrowed that down to a 100 card deck by selecting a few cards each that I personally could see matching up to the available suspects/locations/objects. Then I think I just threw in some extra cards that I particularly like while trying to maintain some variety of artists and art styles/subjects.

Thoughts on the difficulty level of this game?

I honestly wasn't really sure whether it was going to be easier or harder than the base game. I originally tried setting it at slightly-below medium difficulty level. Then when we lost a psychic, I just left it at the medium difficulty level it turned into for a fun challenge. In hindsight, I do think the objects may have been particularly difficult in this game - some were clearly a lot easier to associate things with than others.

What surprised you the most?

I expected the psychic players to take a more collaborative approach than they did, just based on my own personal experience with the game. It still was interesting to watch and obviously worked out.
