Actually is it too presumptuous of me to pick red team and draft Xtoxm and Isis? (@mena or @NM, feel free to say no, I realize picking a whole team for myself is potentially a huge advantage)

like having embassy, moscow, and china but with capital as the bomb is just yikes. i was also debating giving a clue that would make it clear capital wasn’t part of our words, by giving a clue like “punishment 0” or something, but i wasn’t sure if delaying an entire turn would cost us too much in the long run. sorry team.

I don’t really follow sports too much but I’ve never heard of a team called the Phoenixes, I think based on the mouthfeel alone a team wouldn’t/shouldn’t choose Phoenixes as a name because it’s not easy to chant. Eagles is a football team but again I don’t think it’s that.

Here are my picks: boom/jet/back/board

i believe the phoenix suns is a basketball team but i think “phoenix” is a stretch from “supersonics” - like if the words were boom/jet/phoenix then i feel like haschel could have just given a fire/flying related clue and not gone to the trouble of “supersonics.” when i see the word phoenix, “phoenix suns” is suuuuuper low in my associations with that word

the word “phoenix” by itself isn’t the name of a basketball team, it’s just the city where the team is located. you wouldn’t call them “phoenix” for short, you’d call them “the suns.” i don’t think haschel is giving us a clue that’s the name of a city because it happens to have a basketball team??? i associate phoenix much more strongly with the bird, anyway.

edit: sorry for the multi-posts, i just feel very strongly about this.

the backboard is the thing that’s behind the basketball net. as far as basketball-related clues go, i think it’s a decent set of guesses. i don’t really see any other basketball-related words. (i believe xofelf said they maybe participated in march madness but that should be a college event only and from our conversation about the supersonics i don’t think they were a college team, so i’m excluding march.)

Actually I’m kind of warming up to the idea that “supersonics” is maybe just meant to represent
a
sports team as opposed to a particular sport, and that eagle might be our word (referring to the Eagles).

I also want to bring back xofelf’s suggestion of March for March Madness, I think it has potential.

Again, phoenix is not the actual name of a team so I still don’t think it’s phoenix. It’d be equivalent to saying “it must be Berlin because Berlin has a basketball team.”

This also is probably a stretch, but I just thought that maybe sonic also refers to the hedgehog, who’s known for being fast and whose games are about running. So maybe “lap”?

I think it’s more likely to be a basketball word than a sports team word so I’m also more comfortable with board. Let’s see where that puts us and we can always guess Eagle after (it’d be next round, anyway).

First two words that come to mind are “cover” and “back.” My third choice would be “march” because of the kind of militaristic connotations of the word “retreat.” I could also see “spider” as a thing you retreat from.

That makes a lot of sense - my picks would be cover/back/march then

Cover actually makes more sense to me than march (or at least equal) - you need to get to cover when you’re retreating; in war you’d have someone covering you etc etc

Oh, okay. I don’t think any of those are constellations but I’m also not super familiar with astronomy.

I feel like wake is the most likely/least unlikely supersonics clue since march could have been for march madness

Spoiler: for our reference, not official board
TURKEY
SCUBA DIVERFIGUREFIELDSQUARE
COTTONOIL
SHAKESPEARE
DRAGON
FORK
SLUGDIAMONDSKYSCRAPERWELLHAWK
ROME
SPINE
EUROPE
MATCHWATCH
GREECE
CONTRACTLOGSPIDERDISEASE

remaining clues - 2 histories for blue team

A contract is breakable, a watch is breakable, a spine is breakable - those are my 3 picks. I guess a log is also breakable, and maybe like a figure as in a figurine. My top two are definitely contract and spine.

I feel like it could also be watch? Like, goodnight would be a reasonable clue to span both the Bond thing and a time word

I feel less good about oil now. Pine plz help

gah here's what I think could be our words:

oil
cotton
diamond
hawk? (like, nighthawk)
watch

I don't really see anything else on the board that could be related, so I feel like we just pick one of these and guess it, since we have 4 goodnight words. 1/5 chance to be wrong isn't that bad

In post 4784, Farren wrote:Bleh, got my terminology wrong. Homonyms should be out. There, that's the simple version.
I agree with Farren on this, the spelling thing makes it weird anyway. we should allow homographs but not allow clues where the spelling changes.

I like the abbreviations rule but I think if we include it then we should also allow proper nouns (like counting proper nouns as one word)

great job team! I thought I fucked things up with the star clue

star words: moon (space-related), model (I was actually thinking of this being a space clue, like a model planet), death (farren got this right, it was a star wars reference), fan (of a celebrity), space (stars are in space), fighter (I thought I remembered star wars having starfighters?)

safari was supposed to clue lion & horn (like a rhino)

I didn't remember that stars were made of gas, lol.

TRIANGLE - probably not
PART - probably not unless it's like a reference to body parts or centaurs or mermaids
BEACH - a place where animals are found
THIEF - probably not
DWARF - hopefully not
LOCH NESS - maybe not, better clues
STATE - where does Jake live? there are state animals in the US but probably not
HOTEL - probably not
MINT - probably not
LASER - probably not, although cats like lasers idk
AIR - a place where animals are found
GROUND - a place where animals are found
ALPS - a place where animals are found
POLE - could be like a polecat, but then I'd expect the clue to be "cat"
BOMB - probably not
OCTOPUS - yes
CAP - probably not
CHECK - probably not
TRAIN - probably not
AMERICA - a place where animals are found
COOK - animals can be... cooked? hopefully not
PENGUIN - yes
GERMANY - a place where animals are found
FIELD - a place where animals are found
TIME - probably not

we have 1 animal word//2 bermuda words//up to 4ish capitalist words remaining
blue is still missing 1 fare word and/or 1 micro word

TRIANGLE - Bermuda word, guessed successfully

PART - probably not

THIEF - maybe a capitalist word, it's related to money?
LOCH NESS - probably not? although I guess it's like, water-related (therefore maybe bermuda) and animal-related somewhat...
HOTEL - could be related to capitalist, like businessmen run hotels?
MINT - prints money, could be related to capitalist
LASER - probably not, although cats like lasers idk

GROUND - a place where animals are found, Bermuda's an island so technically it counts as ground? idk
ALPS - a place where animals are found. it could be a Bermuda word by way of "vacation destination"?
POLE - probably not
BOMB - probably not

OCTOPUS - Animal word, guessed successfully

CAP - really stretching here, bermuda is known for planes disappearing and pilots of planes wear... caps? like amelia earhart was famous for wearing a hat thing? oh god
CHECK - it's related to money so it could be a capitalist word, but it could also be a fare word
AMERICA - is definitely capitalist
COOK - animals can be... cooked? hopefully not. probably not.

PENGUIN - Animal word, guessed successfully

GERMANY - a place where animals are found. I don't know if capitalist applies here.
FIELD - probably not

TIME - could be a "capitalist" word, like "money is time" kind of thing?

@pooky I'm trying not to be particularly upset, but in a team game it's not good form to submit guesses like that without waiting for the team because there may have been clues or rules you missed, which is what happened here. I'm not blaming you for not knowing the rules, but it would be good to be a team player and just wait another 5 minutes for us to weigh in.

the clue has to relate to the
meaning
of the word, not the spelling. I'm pretty sure capitalist as a clue for cap is illegal.

I like compound.

Maybe it could be chemistry in a sexy way? -> bed. If the 3 words were intended to be oil/plastic/compound, I feel like those could have been clued as all “materials”?

In post 4538, Haschel Cedricson wrote:In my experience people are always WAAAAAAAY too liberal with guessing instead of passing.

We have a word that's been clued, but we don't know what it is and we disagree on which of the two options is better. If we pass, then we can potentially have the word re-clued to us on the final round, or not clued which will implicitly tell us to look at the options we are debating between. It also leaves words on the board that the opposing spymaster has to work around, and we also have the chance that the other team will guess the word.

Passing is usually the smart play here.
quoting Haschel here - my vote is to pass

In post 4358, Farren wrote:Unlimited also tells us there's a max of one relevant word for film. If two or three had been intended, could have gone with FILM 2 (or 3) and we could still have a chance to win. Realistically, I think we have to assume there is one FILM word and two SOUP/SKYWALKER words.
idk if our spymaster is thinking about it this specifically, but if all of our remaining words related to FILM why didn’t they give us a FILM 3?

Chemistry - microscope, compound, plastic
Soup - stock | probably either oil or chick
Skywalker - knight, space | probably revolution
Film - probably cast

I say we guess cast -> revolution -> oil/chick

okay - personally I think 24 hours between guesses is really short if you’re trying to check in with your team before guessing again, and I think somewhat unevenly favors teams that like to decide all their guesses at once

eta: not sure if helpful info, but there was one round where I could have cut the other team’s phase early and I didn’t because it felt really mean to do that while they were waiting for people to check in

being a king is a status
compounds can have a state (not a status but close?)
I like web, battery, and game for similar reasons

I like king better than web I think. status of a webpage is a thing but the word on the board is just web so it feels like an additional leap needs to be made to get to webpage status. whereas the word king by itself is already a status

I believe biotics might refer to a specific kind of (not yet fully developed) science technology in which little mini robots go in and fix your insides, so I would advocate for Robot pretty strongly. I like Lab and Bug as well. I don’t really like anything else? maybe compound just for science.

Sophisticated makes me think of limousine/theater. and maybe like, duck is seen as a fancy protein at high-end restaurants?
Biotics 4 - {lab}, bug, compound, ?
Status 4 - {king, game} I think battery was a status word and the last word might be covered by another clue. We should have some quite a bit of overlap between sophisticated and our remaining clues from status and biotics.

so best guesses for our remaining four words:
limousine, theater for sure
maybe bug or compound for biotics, but at least one of them has to also be related to sophisticated.
changed my mind about duck because it has to relate to biotics or status in addition to sophisticated
maybe it’s web? That feels like it could be vaguely connected to sophisticated, like the internet is very sophisticated technology

so limousine/theater/web/bug?

If we think biotics is supposed to refer to living things, then both duck and dog would be on the table I think?

theater stages have wings. I am also fairly certain (unless I missed the red team guessing the last Breve word) that the third Breve word is theater.

Oh I just realized there's only seven unguessed words left. Take out duck and theater, and we only need to eliminate one more, and then guess the remaining four. Out of rose/compound/olive/paste/web, I think paste is least connected to our clues. So my order is something like compound > rose > web > olive.

oops, I can totally count.

I think compound can fit all three (biotics are sciencey, compounds are sciency; molecules can have a status like liquid, gas, solid; compounds are "sophisticated" versions of molecules). Web for status of a webpage. I like rose for sophisticated and possibly status and it's also living so it could be for biotics as well. same goes for olive pretty much.. Rose and olive are pretty similar and I can't decide which one I like better, so I guess I'll actually put compound and web first.

sorry team :( it was almost an amazing comeback

clues:
duck 5 - eagle (a bird), france (I thought duck was well known as part of French cooking), ham (another thing you eat), stock (like chicken stock), bat (things that fly/things you duck). This clue was originally “chicken 4” which makes better sense with stock, but then I thought I could get france too by clueing duck instead of chicken. Duck also worked with bat better than chicken did.
thor 3 - you got these. superhero, bolt, jupiter.
cook unlimited - I had clued everything except time (“cook time”) at this point, but wanted to reclue the duck words as well because I don’t think you were getting to stock or ham from just duck. We needed 6 words to win though and it was fairly likely the other team would win in the next turn, so I had to make it an infinite clue if I wanted to give the team a chance to guess the rest of the words in one go.

alexander graham bell invented the telephone (I think?)
you can play games on your phone
phones are like little robots
phones have a battery life
phones have wires, which are kind of like tubes?
kids have phones
telephone and telescope are both things that are used for distance (distance talking, distance seeing)?

Agree with Farren - I’d be ok with prods as long as the spymaster uses a pre-determined message and is limited to once per turn. also would not play in a game that allows googling. I’ve never played duet but looks interesting.

Here’s a link to a bgg thread that talks about the differences: https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/6719 ... -agents-al

reading this, I feel like we’ll actually have less discussion/a harder time discussing clues in duet, so I might just prefer the regular version.

We can’t win this turn anyway, so I’d rather pass I think.

Spoiler:
anniversary is a day
the third drift word was probably slip, since bulge didn’t clue it and we said that was our third choice.
kind of stumped on the second anniversary word. maybe gold, like a wedding ring?

I think slip is more solid. you make a good argument against gold, but I don't really feel good about concert.

I’m not sure we should pass since they have 3 clued words already, but don’t feel great about any guesses. so I’m not sure where that leaves us.

We both think it's gold. "All that glitters is gold" is a well-known lyric from All Star by Smashmouth (hope I got the title right, otherwise I'm gonna look like a fool)

Do you mean that if I guessed a word that was correct and it happens to be on my list as well, I can't tell my partner that it's on my list? will there be a penalty for doing so?

The rule about compound words says that words with hyphens or spaces aren’t valid clues, unless we’re playing with flexible rules.

We don’t play with flexible rules unless it’s agreed on before the game starts. So by default, hyphenated words, pronouns, acronyms, and anything else listed in the flexible rules section aren’t allowed. Usually you don’t need to know the flexible rules so there’s no need to have a list of them in this thread unless we play a game with flexible rules, but in this case we’re citing it to show that hyphenated words are explicitly not allowed in the non-flexible ruleset because they’re specifically part of the flexible rules, which we’re not using. The gist of the basic rule is “only one word that is related to the meaning of the words on the board,” and flexible rules are only there as exceptions to the basic rule if the people playing decide they want those exceptions. By default there aren’t any exceptions to “only one word.” Hyphenated words are more than one word.
