Random Generator (Mafia Scum Tools) is complete!

MAFIA SCUM TOOLS is finally released!!!

As promised, I have released Mafia Scum Tools version 1.0. This features all of the changes from the development versions, and a nicer layout of the code.

For those not familiar with this project, it provides the following features. It:
- Randomly allocates a name to a title, which are specified throught the input process
- Allows users to specify the names and titles immediately from a list of names, each on a new line, which makes it easy to copy from forums, such as this one.
- Displays data in a format suitable to copying back into a forum
- Alerts you of any errors that have occured, which makes it less likely for you to make a mistake.
- Is free, with a GPL license.
- Can be hosted on YOUR site as well, just follow the link at the bottom of this post, or the mafia scum tool's footer.

To try out this client, go here: http://users.quickfox.org/~nerd-network/mafia/
To download the source and run it on your own server, go here: http://users.quickfox.org/~nerd-network/
**These servers may be a little slow, due to quickfox's popularity.

NOTE TO ALL: If anyone is willing to mirror the download files on a reasonably fast server, please let me know.

NOTE TO JEZ, MITH AND ANY OTHER DEV'S: You are more than welcome to run this on your server, seeing as I made it for this forum in particular.

IF THERE ARE ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT, PLEASE POST THEM HERE ASAP!

Hmmm.... Sounds like QuickFox.org was down (again). It's working again now.

Has anyone else had any troubles with it?

mathcam: If I understand what you want correctly, I see a problem. What happens if it doesn't specify any cops? Or mafia scum? It is feasible that it might exclude them. If you clarify your idea, I will be more than happy to attempt to incorporate it.

Thanks for all the feedback guys  .

Lord Gurgi:
how about making it so at least one of everything is included, then random distribution afterward.
That is very easy to put in, but it could annoy a few people. By leaving it unset, it allows people an easier task of putting other values in. If you press "Validate and Submit Data", any number field that isn't entered into becomes 0. If the majority of people out there want it, I can make this 1.
Mathcam:
Norinel, it tells me I have too many roles to be distributed, unless you found a neat way of bypassing this.
When I put javascript validation into the code, it disallowed this. It will be a minor change to make it a query instead of an alert. If you want this, let me know.
mathcam
Nerd: No cops is fine, but the mafia would indeed be a problem. I guess this is more elaborate a suggestion that I originally, thought, then. If you wanted to do this full force, though, you could specify a range for each role...

Between 1 and 2 cops.
Between 1 and 1 docs.
Between 2 and 4 mafia.
Between 6 and 10 townies,
with a total of 12 people.

And then run an algorithm which randomly assigns the roles within those parameters.

Again, this isn't a huge deal, but if you're looking for something to do...

Cam
If I made the change specified above, this would be obselete. The problem with this suggestion is that it allows for a greater human error. However, with the query above, it should then work fine.
ralphmerridew
You can use sourceforge.net as a distribution point.
Should I? It is up to you as the reader to decide. Is this project big enough to be hosted there? :?:

Hey! :)

Sorry for my delayed message, but as you might have noticed (if you read the news on the site), I have lost the use of my computer for quite a while now, and have not been able to remedy the problem. Even now, I cannot - seeing as I am using my dad's computer, and my files are on my 200GB hd which was in my (now deceased) computer.

I will fix the problem ASAP (most likely shortly after New Year).

I'm glad you like the utilty too.

Hmmm... I just noticed something.

Parts of the Mafia Scum Tools Generator are now failing to work - regarding sorting by name or entering player names at the front page :(

Maybe it is because of SourceForge.net updates in PHP and so on. Does anyone else experience these problems?

Matthew (Nerd Nation Admin)

Hmmm.... Can you give me any more information... For instance: Which file you downloaded?

There are three file formats:
.zip
.tar.gz
.tar.bz2

Windows only natively supports zip. Linux supports all three.

Perhaps that answers your question. If not, please reply ;).

Thanks,

Ah...

I take it you tried to execute the *.php files? These files are designed to be run from an http server, not as a stand alone application. To use it, you must visit a site that has downloaded and added to the tool to their website. The official server is located @: http://adv-random-gen.sf.net/rand-gen/.

However, if the demand is high enough, I shall try to create a standalone (*.exe for windows, and one for linux as well) application version of this tool.

P.S. Can anyone confirm errors when using the enter name instead of numbers in front screen:
Fatal error: [] operator not supported for strings in /var/local/home/groups/a/ad/adv-random-gen/htdocs/rand-gen/index.php on line 74?

Hurrah:- I have isolated the problem. The shell and the mafia scum tools php scripts had a variable which had doubled up. Despite the lack of my computer, I shall try to release a fix for that.

i.e. shell-1.0

The changes will be effective immediately on the official site.

Stewie -> The official site for it is: http://adv-random-gen.sf.net/rand-gen/.

NOTE: BUG HAS BEEN FIXED AS OF NOW

Hmmm... I can't reproduce that.

But I have made it easier to read with a better layout.

Perhaps this has remedied the problem. Please check it out.

I'm glad that someone is - although statistics seem to suggest that quite a few are.

Hmmm... Another error:
Fatal error: [] operator not supported for strings in /home/groups/a/ad/adv-random-gen/htdocs/rand-gen/mafia/3.php on line 120
Sorry... Although I still am not sure *exactly* what the problem is. I will take a quick look now. This problem arises only when you select "Sort By Name". I will try to fix it soon, if not immediately.

I shall post here when I am done.

Is there anything at all that it is lacking?

Hooray! I fixed it -> and you will not believe it. It was ANOTHER overlapping variable.

I really do need to do another variable checkover ;).

Any other features to add, or fix?

Hey everyone!

If anyone is still interested, the one outstanding bug (inverted commas) has now be corrected, with the loss of the use of the "\" character. If you had intended to use it, my advice is - use "/" instead.

Remember too, that if there are any specific features you would like to see added, let me know.

Sorry for my long period of inactivity  .

The proper url is: http://adv-random-gen.sourceforge.net/r ... gen=mafia/ , but I am sure that you are all aware of this.

I shall attempt to update the wiki site.

More features may be forthcoming if I can find the time ;).

NNA is back, although I cannot say for how long.
Very cool toy, Matthew. How hard do you think it will be to allow ranges (1-3 cops, for example, or 0-2 masons)?
I... errr.. Said I would do that, but never did. My most sincere and humble apologies. Allow me to revise this: I will attempt to find time to attempt to add it. I anticipate that it will have a timescale of at least a month (I am a full time uni student), but who knows, you may be lucky.

Do you still actually want this feature?

Well... I released a new version of Mafia scum tools, but that, I fear, is the last. My friend, for whom I wrote this tool, no longer plays this game. And I have no real interest in pursuing it.

If someone wants to take over, and polish it, rewrite it, or whatever, by all means take over. It is licensed under GPL, after all. I am willing to give you admin status on sourceforge, and remove myself.

It is written in basic PHP.

Kind Regards,
Matthew
