Fate/Grand Order: Mafia in the Lostbelt - The Second

As reviewed by fferyllt, syryana, and Penguin_Alien.

This setup is a semi-Upick for 14 anonymous players and will feature 4 mafia- and 10 town-aligned players. Please read the additional details of the setup below.

Setup generation

There are 14 classes in Fate Grand Order. Each player will be assigned a random class from the list:

Once the game has filled and everyone has been assigned a class, players will receive a PM with a list of every possible character from their class that they may choose from. Some are historic figures, some are from mythology, some are from religions of the world, and some are unique to the game. Selecting your character will earn you access to your Anon account, where all further correspondence will occur. Players will have 48 hours to choose. If you wish to have a randomized pick, or if you fail to respond, one will be drawn at random for you.

Once 48 hours have passed from the end of the pick phase, the final setup will be completed. Alignment is randomly assigned BEFORE players have selected their servant but will be revealed to players upon receipt of their role PM. Once we have a at least 11 confirmations, the Master Selection Phase will begin.

General Rules

1. We don’t tolerate ad hom wars. If your posting is merely insulting a player without providing game content, you can expect a strike from us. Three strikes, you’re out. We are fairly lenient about this, but posting “Fuck you” over and over again is simply not acceptable. Severe issues will be reported to the list mod(s).
2. If we say it violates these rules, it does. You can take it up with us postgame if you wish.
3. Play towards your win condition. Gambits are fine, directly harming your own team is not.
4. Once an elimination is reached, you may continue discussion until we lock the thread. No votes or unvotes will count after an elimination has been achieved.
5. An elimination is achieved as a majority of players voting for somebody. Half is not a majority.
6. Do not quote or pretend to quote any information you get from us via PM. This includes posting your role card verbatim. Paraphrasing is fine, as are role claims naturally.
7. Do not talk about this game anywhere else, or with anyone else.
8. Do not discuss ongoing games in this thread. This includes games on sites other than mafiascum. This also includes using [redacted] as that loophole does not fly here.
9. We are usually rather lenient upon activity. This game is an exception. Post every 48 hours. Failure to do so will earn you a prod. Respond to your prod within 24 hours, or face replacement. Three prods is also a force replacement.
10. Claiming scum by yourself is fine. Claiming scum with another player is an instant modkill. Don't do it.
11. We do not require unvotes. Your vote will be counted so long as you bold it or use the vote tag. Shorthand names are fine so long as it’s clear who the vote is for.
12. If you have a question, please PM us. If a question is something that should be answered publicly, we will make a post addressing it without naming who asked it.
13. If our vote count is wrong, you can PM us or post in the thread (use the bold tag and "@MOD") about it.
14. We do not fix tags or edit posts where you might make a formatting mistake, even if you ask us to.
15. We reserve the right to add to these rules or modify them, but only when we post notifying all players in the game of the change.
16. Loophole abuse is all fun and games until we modkill you. Don’t try it.
17. Blue

(This color at #0000FF)

is our color. You are welcome to use any other color of the rainbow.
18. Encryption, text hiding, and the like are silly. Don’t do it.
19. Do not use temporary information to convey messages. This includes your signature and your avatar, but is not limited to these things.
20. While putting your vote or unvote on its own line is helpful, it is not necessary and any attempts to game voting formatting will be dealt with as an attempt to cheat. If we think it was a vote, it was a vote.
21. A modkill will always punish the faction modkilled more as far as timing goes. All modkills will be done after consultation with the listmods. Modkills may or may not end the day. Modkilled players will be changed to a neutral survivor, meaning they lose the game instantly.
22. In the event of site downtime lasting more than 3 hours; time will be added to the deadline to compensate at a 1 to 1 ratio.
23. All factional decisions must be agreed upon by all living members of that faction.

Master Selection Phase

This phase lasts 7 days. All players will converse in the main thread and vote for a player to gain a Master. At the end of the phase, the servant with plurality gains a Master. (in the event of a tie, all "winning" slots will be randomly entered and one will be drawn) Having a Master confers benefits depending upon the alignment of the player:

If a town Master is selected, the town Master + servant is revealed as an innocent child and becomes unkillable by ANY means until day two has passed. The servant in that slot will additionally have their role modified to account for the additional support they now have. Day 1 will become an double-elimination day and last for 240 hours (10 days) instead of 168 hours (7 days). (The first elimination WILL reset the vote count)

If a scum Master is selected, that mafia member immediately flips and exits the main game thread. The three remaining members of mafia have their role PMs upgraded to much stronger versions of their existing abilities, while the flipped member of the mafia remains in the scum PT, allowed to advise and lead the team.

The game will then proceed into Day 1 as a single-elimination day.

Noble Phantasm (And Noble Phantasm Charge)

1) Each Servant has a different number of charges required to fully charge their Noble Phantasm Bar. This is three (***), four (****), or five (*****) dependent on class.
2) At the start of the game (Day One) every player's bar has zero charges. Before each day phase begins (and after all night actions are resolved), each player gains one charge. Any double-elimination phases, modkills, or transitions from Master Voting phase to Elimination Day Phase do not count as starts of day phases.
3) If a player starts the day phase with a fully charged Noble Phantasm Bar, they can activate their Noble Phantasm during that day phase if possible unless something occurs earlier in the game day to reduce their charge.
4) If a player starts a night phase with a fully charged Noble Phantasm Bar, they can activate their Noble Phantasm during that night phase if possible.
5) Charge bar level is private information and may be requested by a player for themselves at any time in the game by PMing the mod. Players will also be informed of their current NP charge at the start of each day and night phase as well as any changes to it that happen as a result of day actions immediately.
6) If a Noble Phantasm is sealed, it will not activate but will remain fully charged pending other effects.
7) Once a Noble Phantasm is activated, its charge bar will be reduced to zero.

Other Setup Specific Rules

1. Players, when flipped, will have the identity of all players that were playing as that slot revealed.
2. The deadline will always be set to end at 9PM CST of a given day.
3. Deadlines for all player phases (days) are set at 7 days. Enemy phases (night) are 48 hours. Replacements will add in an additional day, up to three days added per cycle.

4. Posting in a different thread as your alt OR posting as your main will cause a force-replacement.

5. A game phase is considered "exhausted" if a phase generated more than 3 new pages of posts multiplied by the number of living slots. At that point, the game will enter "wind down" phase. The page count of the current player phase will be provided at 9 P.M. CST each day, during the votecount.
6. During "wind down" each player is allowed a one post, and one additional post per vote on them at the time of the thread lock. (These counts will be mod-provided publicly)
7. Failure to comply with wind down rules will be met with loss of abilities, vote, or both. You REALLY don't want to do this.
8. As a part of being the change in the world I wish to see, the term for removal is generically "elimination" or "eliminated" If you wish to be more gruesome, please use "Burn" and "burned" as that is a mechanic in the game!

Additional Setup Notes

1. This game heavily focuses around the fact that your class is known, but your specific servant's identity is not. Be aware that just is true of most stories, knowing one's myth means knowing one's weaknesses. Be careful when claiming or revealing information about your role. This aspect is majorly MORE important in the second running of the setup.
2. This game may feature characters from various religions and mythologies. Please ensure such things will not offend you when signing up.

Quick update here.

One of the player who had signed up ended up having to out. As the role PMs were not out yet, I went ahead and let the replacement pick instead of making them stick with the prior choice.

This delayed ever so slightly game design, but I assure you we'll get it out and role PMs to folks as soon as possible.

The master upgrade conditions for this run of the game are now public.

Chosen Town Master

You are completely unkillable by any means until the start of night two. Immediately gain ***** (You cannot exceed your NP's max charge). Immediately target two players, they will gain *. Town will have two eliminations on day one. The deadline will NOT reset after the first elimination.

Chosen Scum Master

You will immediately treestump, allowed to remain in the mafia PT but not the game thread. All mafia players will immediately gain ***** (You cannot exceed your NP's max charge). For the rest of the game, all mafia players will gain one additional * at daystart.

Nero Claudius smoothed her dressed for the third time of the morning, wrinkles long gone but nerves still humming. The Colosseum buzzed with the overlapping voices of Servants waiting for the Games to start. A microphone stood in her box, ready for her to kick off this new iteration of NeroFest, the one to successfully round out her trilogy! Sure, there had been some...interruptions...since her second event, but she'd checked. Gilgamesh had been busy with some schemes against Enkidu, Ishtar was having a series of bad hair days taking up her attention, and Scáthach was trying to corral her former students into a questing band once again with limited success in the face of Fionn's overweaning ego-driven tales. All were too preoccupied to crash her event another time. This would be a success! NeroFest III!

Stepping up the microphone, she cleared her throat. With a deep breath, she began her operatic welcome: "Valiant Servants, I welcome you to the third, yes, the third! NeroFes..."

BOOM.

The gates to the arena below crash inward. A fur-wearing whirlwind stormed across the dusty sands. "WE WANT GOLDEN APPLES!"

Atalanta had burst onto the scene. Surveying the arena, her eyes landed on Nero, sputtering into the microphone. "This Festival needs true athleticism, valiant Heroic Spirits, and noble ideals! Children need good role models." Vaulting up to Nero's box, Atalanta stands on the railing, gaze raking over Nero's dress. "Step aside. I will find true champions and give everyone the show they deserve!"

Atalanta Berserker, for this was definitely not the thoughtful green-clad woman of the Archer class, shoved Nero to the back of the box with her right hand even as her left hand gestured toward the arena below. Golden apples materialized, bouncing to the ground haphazardly. "Fourteen Golden Apples. Whoever of you claims them first shall compete in my Festival: AtalantaFest! Prove yourselves!"

The stands erupted to overwhelm Nero's squawks of dismay. Servants pushed, jumped, and brawled to claim the tokens. With the rising dust, it became hard to see who was winning. Alliances formed and melted in the battle, some sticking and some dissolving in moments. Four hazy figures in particular seemed to band together to fend off others. But soon enough, Atalanta clapped her hands and the dust dropped all at once to reveal fourteen Servants fortuitously representing fourteen Classes clutching Golden Apples. The remaining Servants, grumbling, returned to the stands.

Smiling at the fourteen Servants below, Atalanta Berserker continued, "You have earned the right to compete. I can already tell some of you are here to compete with honor, and some will sacrifice anything INCLUDING YOUR CHILDREN!" She stopped, inhaled slowly, and continued. "Will sacrifice anything to claim the power of the prize Grail for your own nefarious purposes. I will provide one of you with the power of a Master to guide you in this competition." She snapped her fingers, and a dazed looking young man with a shock of dark hair popped into existence next to her.

"...this isn't Chaldea, or the Wandering Sea! Not another Singularity...wake up, wake up, wake up..."

She continued over him. "Eliminate the unworthy, and those who prove themselves may earn a share of this Grail and the incredible magic it contains. Beware those who would stoop to foul trickery to win. (I know nothing of such tactics) You are individuals, but you are united in your desire for glory and honor."

The fourteen Servants glanced at one another. AtalantaFest would clearly be more complicated than past events.

Nero pushed her way back up to the microphone. "I demand you stand down! These are my games!"

Atalanta Berserker rolled her eyes. "Oh, sit down. If you don't bother me too much, I might let you sing the official AtalantaFest awards ceremony song at the end of all this."

Nero sat down with a thump.

This is the first and ONLY warning I will give for trying to narrow down identities using any sort of information, including gender tags. Gender tags are a necessary sacrifice to complete and total anonymous profiles to avoid harm to those who absolutely need them to avoid mental harm.

The Chaldea chefs had just barely kept up with demand for snacks throughout the Masterization debate. The Master in question, after about 30 minutes of searching for ley lines and another 30 minutes of cursing out someone named Sion for hacking into the Olympic Channel broadcast from a couple dimensions over and clearly jinxing him, had settled down with regular popcorn deliveries.

But with the sands warming up, the ragtag assortment of Servants seemed to have reached a decision. "Atalanta," a voice shouted. "My fellows have honored me with Masterization! Let's go!"

Atalanta turned to the Master, holding out a hand. With a resigned sigh, he handed her his half-full bag of popcorn and rolled up his sleeves. Dusting his hands off on his trousers, he warily crossed the sands to Berserker.

Berserker for his part watched the Master's approach with fiery glee. The other Servants stepped back to give the pair room when the Master stopped several feet away. Holding his Golden Apple in his left palm, Berserker closed the gap and reached out with his other hand for the Master's hand, adorned with three Command Spells. Their right hands clasped over the Golden Apple, and a jolt rippled through the fifteen participants. Berserker closed his eyes, acclimating the to the new power at his fingertips.

He opened his eyes, meeting those of the Master. Berserker's eyes seemed to have taken on a new calculating glint. Then, with no warning, he lunged forward as the crowd gasped.

Berserker manhandled the Master into a rough embrace, nearly knocking the wind out of the slight figure. "We are going to do great things here for the forces of good!" Berserker boomed. "A mere athletic contest this may be, but we will compete with valor. No tricks!"

Atalanta settled back in the throne she'd conjured for herself in the long hours of...spirited...debate. "Very well, the Master has been assigned, for whatever good he might provide you. And it doesn't seem that you're inclined to use his power to corrupt my Festival. You may continue. Start demonstrating your prowess before I turn the microphone over to Nero here for a halftime show." She scowled as Nero perked up. "Demonstrate it quickly."

And with that, the games were afoot. Victory was a distant goalpost, but some judicious leveling of the the playing field was ripe for the plucking.

Berserker roared in glee, making the Master jump. "Let's see what you can do here, Master! We're going to have fun with this power, eh? Time to sort out the worthy from the unworthy."

"Just so there aren't any harems. Or Nobus. Anything else, happy to help and get this Singularity moving..." the Master muttered. "Or violent computer programs...yeah, I'll take this Festival. Have at it, Berserker."

I am taking action, as this rule was unfortunately still violated. But first, I want to have a fireside chat, if you will. The point of an anon game is to allow everyone to ditch the baggage, built up over play duration, that their mains may have and interact only within the boundaries of a single game, and their posts within. Think of this as a polite masquerade dinner outing. Even if you know that the guy sitting over at the table across the way is Jim from accounting, you politely maintain the social illusion and freedom of anonymity. "You're evil!" "No, you're evil!" "I know you're up to no good!"

And in unison:

"I WILL SEE YOU DISSOLVE INTO GOLDEN SPARKLES TODAY!"

Golden. Sparkles. There were days Atalanta wondered how her life had come to this. Nevertheless...

Tapping the microphone, she drew everyone's attention. "Servants: a challenge has been declared. The first contestant to leave us today will be one of Avenger and Foreigner. Wipe your tally slates clean, folks, because we have ourselves a head-to-head battle. May the best Servant win!"

The only valid vote targets for the first elimination of Day One are Servant Avenger and Servant Foreigner. The vote count will be reset at this point.

"I repent my hubris, release me from my torment!" Antonio Salieri sang mournfully, plunking along to his own tragic tune.

Nero perked up and started to join in with a truly awful descant. "We are SO not doing this," Atalanta declared. "Antonio, unSummon your piano and get back to business. We still have a field to winnow.

"And really, giving Nero an excuse to sing. Should have thrown some of those apples a bit harder at the start."

Avenger's true name is Antonio Salieri.

Atalanta was feeling much more chipper after some food. Sadly, not everyone would be in such a pleasant mood.

A fairly organized footrace had started below, and the arena was awash with blurs of color as Servants zoomed by, almost too fast to see.

Then a blur resolved. "Hey, you tripped me!" someone complained. Everything stopped, and the crowd's focus lasered in on Servant Moon Cancer.

"...what? We're here to win, right?" she blinked innocently.

"Not like that! You're one of those 'win by any means' folks, aren't you?"

Servant Moon Cancer sighed and flipped her purple hair back. "Oh, sure, be just a little bit ruthless and everyone's a critic," she said. "I'm not here to make friends." An evil grin sprouted. "I'm here to crush you all, even if I have to reprogram this entire stadium to do it! Young and old, I'll beat them all!"

Atalanta loomed over the railing, a furious flush on her cheeks. "You would hurt children! I'll be taking that Golden Apple back now, thank you, and you can go back to the thrice-damned ether!" she said.

The Golden Apple sailed back to Atalanta, recoiling like a shiny yo-yo. With a wail, BB lost cohesion. "My kouhai powers were supposed to win this for me..."

Atalanta grimaced as BB disappeared. Turning to the rest of the group, she said, "Now, please, do that again. With fewer threats against children this time, eh?"

Atalanta watched indulgently as the competing Servants set up a pit for a long jump. There had been some discussion of making it the triple jump, but everyone had quickly agreed the arena wasn't nearly long enough for that.

Jump...jump. Atalanta wished she could get some screenshots of these solemn figures flailing through the air to eke out that one extra inch. Dignity had long since been sacrificed on the altar of victory.

Near the end of the line, a Servant kicked up one heel, then the other, with an air of anxiety. When she was up, she clicked the soles of her (admittedly very cool) shoes together and took off running. Hitting the line, there was a brief flare of light from her heels, and she catapulted nearly to the far arena wall.

"Wow!" said Servant Saber. "That beats you losers by...what, half a mile?" She tossed her pink hair back, cat ears twitching.

Much though Atalanta felt kinship with others sporting feline features, this could not be allowed to stand. "We need to inspect those shoes, Saber," Atalanta announced. "I suspect they gave you a bit of a boost, no?"

Saber pouted and flounced over to the balcony. "These old things?" She shook her toe to the crowd in what she clearly hoped was a coy manner. "Hardly! I just have a light heart and nothing weighing me down, no guilty conscience here. It makes me fly relative to these sticks in the mud." The eyes peering it from beneath her lashes looked anything but casual.

Atalanta snapped her fingers, and Saber flew up fifteen feet. From that height, the booster rocket mechanisms in the bottoms of her shoes were clearly evident. "I thought so. Another competitor with evil intentions!"

Suzuka Gozen sulked. "I'm a high school girl! How am I supposed to compete against these big lugs?!?"

"Fairly and with honor." Atalanta held out a hand, and Suzuka's Golden Apple smacked into Atalanta's palm.

Even as she floated down, Saber was dissolving into golden sparkles. "Whatever, your Festival was dull anyways. I have cooler places to be..." And she was gone.

"Twelve Servants remain. Why don't we take a water break here," Atalanta proclaimed. "Be back out here soon."

"And leave my Berserker alone!" piped up the Master from the balcony. "I didn't Rayshift here for too short an event."

"What he said," echoed Atalanta. She studied an eager Nero. Sigh. "You've mostly behaved. You get *one* song. Choose wisely. I have the microphone plug right here..." Atalanta threatened.

Nero grinned and began to warble as the Servants trudged out. "Weeee are the champions, my friends!"

A dozen lucky Servants picked up their place to get out of earshot.

A desperate mission. One, last chance for salvation. The odds were low that it would work, but a cornered animal will do anything to save itself. They drew lots, and the unlucky ones set off under the cover of whatever concealment they could find to muster hope that they could emerge from the other side of this ordeal intact. Knowing that even if they failed, their fellows might pull through another way.

Blades flashed.

*snip*

The caterwauling cut off with an abrupt hiccup. Nero looked indignantly at the microphone, lashing the cord impatiently. It whipped up from the edge of the balcony, frayed end flying through the air. "My power ballad!" she whined. "I was only halfway through my set list."

Atalanta decided to deliberately not see the team of chortling Servants making their way back to their bleacher seats, scissors safely stowed once more. Really, they'd done her a favor, given the way the mood in the stadium had been shifting since Nero got her hands on the microphone. She reached behind her chair and grabbed the megaphone she'd stashed, just in case. "No, Nero," she preempted the question, "you don't want to sing through this. Just think of the feedback and distortion; your public would be so disappointed."

Atalanta signaled for someone to bring Nero a platter of grapes, then cleared her throat. "We will now resume the competition. My remaining dozen, step OUT!"

The line of competitors emerged. One, two, three...nine, ten, eleven. One didn't come back. Atalanta sighed. "All right, where did Ruler go?"

The Servants looked at one another. "We just found her Golden Apple on the bench. When we went to reassemble. Guess she dropped out? Or something?"

"Or something," Atalanta agreed. "The competition would seem to be heating up." With a snap of her fingers, the abandoned Golden Apple whizzed over the Servants' heads and smacked into her palm. "Servant Ruler, Jeanne d'Arc, has burned out, it would seem. Happens to the best athletes."

An uncomfortable silence fell. "What, you weren't thinking it?" she asked the crowd. "No matter. I see no reason not to continue my Festival. Impress me, Servants!"

It was apparently time for sprints. Atalanta yawned as she watched eleven of the most powerful beings on earth argue about how best to organize a round-robin-knock-out format of footraces. Back in her day, this had been so much easier. Brag a little, point at a tree, promise death to all the losers, and start running. Modern Servants, always making things so complicated.

Speaking of modern Servants, Atalanta watched Voyager surreptitiously loading metal plates into other Servants' pockets. Another one up to no good. "You! The little one there!" Voyager made a show of looking around before placing a hand on his chest and mouthing 'moi?' at her. "Yes, you, Servant Foreigner. I saw what you did. You're not good enough to get away with that chicanery."

The boy looked guiltily from side to side before dropping a huge pile of metal scrap and racing pell-mell for the arena gates. "Blast off!" he cried. But then slowing, "Oh, blast."

Amid the silvery pile of metal was one Golden Apple gleaming in the sun. "Can't I at least try some funnel cake before I go?" he begged, even as his body dissolved, first briefly flashing the image of a 1970's space probe, then a shower of golden sparkles.

Atalanta held up her hand, the latest Golden Apple snapping to her silent command. "Hm, funnel cake does sound good," she mused. "All right, everyone, we're taking a break for snacks! I mean, serious contemplation of the day's events."

As the stands began to empty, a new voice piped up. "I'm...sorry to bother you." Mash was swaying from side to side just a bit. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to withdraw from the Festival." Her arms, crossed over her chest, dropped to her sides, revealing several stab wounds bleeding profusely. "I tried to muddle through, but my Spirit Origin just isn't healing fast enough, and I'd hate to bleed all over the nice track here."

At Atalanta's nod, Mash limped over to the balcony and held up her Golden Apple in a trembling hand. "I didn't want to disappoint everyone this way, especially with Senpai watching. You're running such a lovely Festival, Atalanta. See you back in Chaldea." With her Golden Apple surrendered, Mash made her way back to the arena gates, fading from sight in the gloom of the corridors beyond.

The crowd, having paused for a moment to mark Servant Shielder's departure, resumed the mad rush for the concession stands. "All right then," Atalanta said. "I'm never going to get through the crowds for my funnel cake. Someone go fetch me some! And maybe a churro for good measure, too!"

Everyone had returned to their places, and the Festival went on. It was easy to forget that Servants came from varied backgrounds in small ways as well as large. Somehow the idea had been introduced that nothing would do but to incorporate gymnastics into the planned Festival. And while Atalanta certainly wasn't going to object, per se, it would seem there was a wide range of definitions depending on what century--or millennium--a Servant was alive for.

"In my day, gymnastics would have involved far less clothing," Atalanta muttered. Kiara materialized next to her, mouth open hand outstretched toward the arena. "Don't even start; we have enough problems!" Atalanta was not about to try to manage the stampedes if her Festival devolved into an orgy. Besides, didn't someone in this modern era have a particularly apt quote on this? 'I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.'" She glared at Kiara, even as the crowd gasped at a particularly daring release move on the bars.

"Honestly, you Servants and your insistence on decorum. Love is glorious!" Kiara pointed at the remaining Servants. "Wouldn't everyone's mood improve if they could all just live Happily Ever After?" One Servant just barely avoided a head-first landing coming off the vault.

"The Festival Games don't work like that. One way or another, they're competing to prove themselves worthy of Festival laurels. And to earn acclaim from their fellow Servants. None of that is easier if they're naked! We can leave the sexcapades to the human world's Olympic Villages."

Kiara pouted. "Not this year, with their stupid cardboard beds and 'take your condoms home as souvenirs!' attitude," she griped. "Don't they know: all you need is love!" Nero perked up at the segue into a potential song.

"Don't; you're not Ewan McGregor, and you can't pull off the Elephant Medley even on your best day." Atalanta turned back to Kiara. "Clearly that nun's habit in this heat has fried your brains. The remaining Servants are doing just fine demonstrating their prowess out there."

"Well, at least eight of them are. I think you just lost one." Kiara pointed at Servant Archer, whose graceful movements were degenerating into jerky flailings.

"My medicine has failed me!" Nightingale Santa wailed. "Who spiked my pills during our break?" Her hand jerked, dropping her Golden Apple. She pushed herself to her feet and leaned on her umbrella for support. "This was my time to shine. Well, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!" A shower of golden sparks, with a few jingle bells interspersed, marked her dissolution.

Atalanta was not entirely clear on the point of this particular athletic endeavor. Horse racing, yes. Decathlons and heptathlons, yes. Even cycling as a race. But this? There was a certain cachet, perhaps.

BMX Freestyle had amassed a following in recent years, yes. Yet it was jarring to see Servants on bikes sized for preteens. She contemplated the mental image of Kid Gil on one of these things. Then replaced it with adult Gilgamesh. Then hurriedly blocked the entire idea from her brain lest Gil pick up on it from somewhere and smite her with his treasury.

(From deep within the Colosseum corridors, Gilgamesh raised his head and cocked an eyebrow. Was that...? No, no one would dare, certainly. He resumed tallying the latest bets placed by the shady denizens of the dimly lit halls.)

Meanwhile the remaining eight Servants flipped madly through the air, at times zooming straight up the arena walls and along the ledges. The spectators were thoroughly entertained, hooting and hollering like the children they all seemed to be at heart. Gravity-defying tricks, enhanced with magical reflexes and strength and, yes, actual magic. The display culminated in a whirling circle of bikes tightening inward until they screeched to a unified halt, forming a perfect octagon in the center of the arena.

The spectators went wild. Such athleticism! Such charisma! Such nerve! Amid the chatter, each Servant presented the Master with their private scorecard, judging their competitors' performances. They formed a line in front of Atalanta's balcony, and when the Master had finished his tally, numbers materialized over each Servant's head. A close heat--except for Servant Avenger. Average score: 3.5.

The seven victorious Servants stepped back, Antonio Salieri alone with his head in his hands. "No one loves me! No one believes in me...I only dreamed of a single flash of brilliance, an accolade of my own. Not even here?" he asked.

Before Atalanta could reply, Nero rushed across the sands to the distraught man. "The music is the important thing!" she reassured him. "Your passion won't die, and we will serenade you now at the end!" She took a deep breath, ready to sing.

"That's...quite all right, my dear." Salieri looked worried. "It is an honor that you would consider such a thing, but I cannot bear to hear such music only to fade and leave it behind." The seven Servants behind him looked deeply skeptical. "Return my Golden Apple to Atalanta instead; honor me in my dignified acceptance of my fate." Nero took his Golden Apple and made her was with all due ceremony back to the balcony. Salieri first bowed to the balcony, and then to the remaining Servants. "May my reputation from this manifestation be less...salacious...than my life. I killed none, I harmed none; I only acted in friendship. I am innocent!" He turned and walked away calmly, casting a grey shadow over the sands before fading out in a haze of golden sparkles.

Seven Servants remained. Atalanta surveyed the group. "Return your bicycles to the storage facility, and we will move on," she said. 'History is being written, and this story isn't over yet. Marshal your strength, lest you fall like Antonio." The Servants filed out as a series of clouds obscured the sun, casting the arena into shadow. In the dim light, the Master contemplated the row of seven Golden Apples. Half forfeit. A Grail War's worth left to go.

The crowd was just filing back to their seats. Most people had stuck around to listen to the booming voices of Berserker and Lancer from the depths of the Colosseum, eager from any insights from behind the scenes, so to speak. But the conversation had ended, and it was time for the festivities to resume. Atalanta picked up her megaphone. "The next phase has begun. Servants, make your way back out to the sands!"

Half the starting number had left the arena. Even fewer returned.

The Master sighed, realizing who wasn't there. "My good and loyal friend, Servant Berserker. You would have been happy traveling the stars, shrouded in mystery, but you competed with valor here instead. I will look forward to seeing you again in Chaldea and beyond." The Master stood up, placing a call through to Chaldea, and Rayshifted away.

"Mysterious Heroine X (Alter)'s story is finished," Nero intoned. "The endings to your tales are not yet written!"

"I didn't give you that megaphone!" Atalanta snatched it away, then stared in puzzlement as she found herself holding two megaphones.

"No you didn't!" Nero protested, jumping a bit to try to grab the second one back. "I bought it on break from a vendor. Very nice gentleman, not at all shady.
Said I'd made him lots of money driving customers in to his business domain?" She grabbed the gilded megaphone. "Artistic freedom!"

Atalanta held out her hand to summon back Berserker's Golden Apple. "Whoops," she noted, as its path ever-so-unfortunately ricocheted off Nero's megaphone before smacking into her palm. "What is they say these days, 'my bad'?"

Cutting off Nero's further protests, Atalanta returned her attention to the six remaining Servants. "Continue your quest to present the Festival with a valiant playing field. May the Games continue!"

Atalanta watched with no little amusement as four Servants were reduced to stunned silence, pleading, and confusion.

Maybe there was something to this modern pentathlon event after all.

Despite the combined weight of history or mythology or legend or sheer life competence, the four horses were clearly getting the better of the Servants. One wouldn't trot, one wouldn't jump, one wouldn't even let their partner mount, and one was stubbornly stationed under Atalanta's balcony. That might have had something to do with Nero's squealing and petting the dumb brute. And also her seemingly endless supply of carrots.

Atalanta gave a piercing whistle. The three horses with riders promptly bucked them off and joined their compatriot in a full out gallop for the doors. At least they were satisfied with their performance.

"All right, you four. There's clearly no winners or losers or even scorers here. Go get showers, or dust baths, or whatever will rinse that stink of horses off you, and report back here. We'll have to try something else." Atalanta rubber her forehead. This was turning into quite a long Festival.

"We could have Servant Idol! The Final Four is the best part, and then there could be home timeline visits and..."

"No Nero. Even if they choose rhythmic gymnastics as their next sport." Atalanta paused at the thought. "Then again, we can discuss it if they go there."

The Servants lined up. The starter's gun fired. And then the three racers were off, leaving cartoon-style dust clouds in their wake.

Atalanta lounged back in her chair. "Even for Servants a marathon will take some time. May as well take a load off."

The three Servants jostled for position as they took laps in and around the arena. Bottled mana was ready for them on a table near the course path, some very much needed energy boosts given the strenuous activity.

The race neared the finish line with a few laps to go. Servant Alter Ego was slightly in the lead, and as he reached the table, in one smooth motion he swiped all but one of the mana bottles down, leaving the last one to grab himself. The other two Servants stopped in their tracks.

"What do you think you're doing?" "How rude!" "That's not very honorable conduct here!"

Servant Alter Ego shrugged. "What? My hand slipped!" Her gaze shifted away from the other two when she saw they didn't buy it. "You can't take my Golden Apple for this!"

"Wanna bet?" Summer Meltryllis snapped her fingers, and one of her

penguins

leviathans darted forward, snatching Ashiya Dōman's Golden Apple from his hand and impaling it on its beak. The leviathan waddled over to Atalanta, who received the apple with all due gravity. She weighed it in her hand while staring at the three Servants.

But then only two. Ashiya Dōman sighed as she began to dematerialize. "So close to victory...hardly any distance intergalactically speaking..." And she was gone.

Osakabehime took a deep breath. "I think that was enough adventure for me for a year. Glad that's over. Arigathank you Meltyrllis for having my back!"

Meltyrllis looked at Servant Assassin coolly. "Are you still here? Don't you have an anime season to catch up on?" But there was a hint of smile on her face, even with her eyes hidden behind sunglasses and her parka shadowing her features.

Atalanta conjured up two wreathes and tossed them down to the living Servants. "I think you can both win this Festival, and we'll give credit to your dead friends too. I'm calling that a successful event; everyone pack up all your QP and get back to Chaldea. Singularities await!"

The crowd began to mobilize, but slowly, with lots of chatting.

"I can be nice. I'll let Nero sing for the Closing Ceremonies." She handed her the now-working microphone.

Dust clouds multiplied as Servants fled the stands.
