    - Don’t be a dick. Don’t be toxic. Attack the play not the player.
  • Don't talk about ongoing games
    - You may not talk to each other about this game outside of threads I have created for this purpose. You may not talk about other ongoing games in this thread.
  • Provable randomness
    - is against the rules. Saying that you rolled a dice is fine, using dice tags or random.org is not.
  • Claiming scum
    - by yourself is fine. Claiming scum with another player is against the rules.
  • Text-based shenanigans
    - are forbidden. This includes tiny or invisible text, cryptography, or quoting PMs or PTs.
  • Confirmation
    - You have about 48 hours to confirm your alignment by PM. Game will start sooner if 9/11 players have confirmed. Posting in a private topic counts as confirmation.


Phases and Activity.
  • Days
    - Day 1 will last up to 10 days. Each subsequent day lasts up to 7 days.
  • Night
    - Nights will last 48 hours. Players who have not posted within 24 hours before the beginning of the night phase must check in during the night via PM or they may be replaced. Night may be shortened if all living players request it.
  • Activity
    - You must post at least once every 48 hours or I will Prod you. You then have 24 hours to post in the game thread or I will seek a replacement. A player who has been prodded 3 times will be subject to replacement with no further notice. Saturday/Sunday count as a single day for prod purposes.
  • Vacation/Limited Access
    - If you need to be absent for an extended period (48 hours or more), please declare your V/LA. While you are V/LA, the prod timer is doubled (96 hours/4 days). If your V/LA will last more than 5 days, consider requesting replacement.
  • Prodging
    - A naked "prod dodge" does not reset the prod timer. To avoid being prodded/replaced for inactivity, include some game advancing content in your prodges, such as "got prodded; xxxx is still scum."
  • Eliminating
    - Players are eliminated during the day phase by a simple majority (# living players/2 +1).
  • Voting
    - Use vote tags or bold tags to place votes. You may shorten the player's name if it remains absolutely clear whom you are voting for. As long as it can be reasonably interpreted as a vote, I will accept it. Do not attempt to use this rule to engage in vote trickery. If I think it's a vote, it's a vote. Examples of acceptable votes: VOTE: Pavowski;
    Vote: Pavowski

  • No Elimination
    - No-elimination is possible. If the day phase deadline elapses with no player reaching a majority of votes, the day will end with no elimination.
  • Twilight
    - Begins when a final vote is reached and lasts until I lock the thread. You're still alive until I flip you, so you can talk in any game threads you have access to until then, but no votes or unvotes will be counted.
  • Daytalk
    - Mafia has daytalk.
  • Action submissions
    - Night/Day actions must be submitted in the appropriate PT, or via direct PM to the mod team.

  • Upon the death of the Alpha Zombie (bomb), everyone not in the Neighborhood is killed. After this point, the game becomes nightless.

  • The most recent Inoculated is always the one with the ability to Inoculate (recruit).

RULE ADDENDUMS:
  • The Alpha Zombie cannot self-kill.
  • Inoculation is compulsive. If no inoculation has occurred by the time of the elimination, the mods will randomly select a non-inoculated player
    BEFORE
    the elimination occurs.
  • An inoculation given *after* a hammer will not be processed. Inoculation must occur before elimination. In this case the mods will randomly inoculate.
  • If the Inoculator is dead, the mod will randomly inoculate a non-inoculated player at roughly 24 hours into the day phase.

My compatriots and I have arrived at the perimeter of a great and mysterious compound in the depths of the jungle. Local lore indicated to us that something of its like might exist, but stepping foot into it now surpasses all hopes we may have had.

Staggering it is, in size and scope. Its massive stone workings seem carved from the very earth. The trees and vines crowd in against it from all sides, almost as if the wilderness itself meant to obscure this place from the light of day. But we have found it, and mean to uncover its secrets.

The hour is late, and storm clouds threaten. The opportunity to take shelter is too inviting not to avail ourselves, so we shall make our camp in the antechamber just inside what appears to be the main entrance.

The air is sweet and cool here, and I pray this should prove a fair omen.

Day 1 Dawns.
You couldn’t sleep.

That’s strange enough, given how strangely you’ve slept since this expedition started. Ever since arriving at these ruins, you’ve slept like a stone: dreamless, unrousable, dead to the world. Something in the air, you figured – this ancient air, unbreathed by human lungs for … how many years? Hundreds? Thousands? – the cold, sweet air of this impossible ruin deep in the jungle.

But last night, you couldn’t sleep. Strange. Stranger still were the sounds you heard in the night. Rustlings. Footsteps. Scratching. And then – you couldn’t be sure, and didn’t want it to be true – the sound of something heavy being dragged across the floor.

Yet you didn’t get up. You tell yourself it’s because you didn’t want to, that you were hearing things and you just wanted to go back to sleep. But a quiet part of your brain whispers, insistently, the truth: that you *couldn’t*. Something kept you motionless in your sleeping bag, and you don’t want to think about what it might have been..

But when the rest of the crew wakes up to discover your navigation and communication equipment smashed, you can’t help thinking about the noises you heard in the night, and why you didn’t get up.

Shouts of dismay and anger quickly turn to accusations and insults, until one of you notices something even more troubling: your guide is gone. Her sleeping bag is empty and cold. And spattered with blood. As you follow the trail out of the ruins and into the jungle, the drops become a trickle, then a gout, and finally the blood is a slick carpet on the foliage underfoot as you wind through the trees.

There she is.

What’s left of her.

She’s been torn at, ripped to pieces. Several in your company turn away, retching, and that’s when you notice the most horrifying thing of all. Now that you’re out in the sunlight, you can see what you couldn’t see in the dim, grim antechamber. There’s blood on your clothes.

There’s blood on

The treasures of this abandoned structure are too numerous to mention, and the mysteries contained within number even greater still.

For the whole of the last several days, we have explored the depths of this place, attempting to map its many passageways and chambers. But we have been unable to completely chart its layout, for it seems the farther we travel from each other, the more confounding its twists and turns become. Reaches of these chambers previously explored by some of our party, visited anew, seem different than the descriptions given by the previous explorers. In one extreme case, one of our most accomplished navigators, Ellen Croft, became distraught to the point of raving when she re-visited a burial chamber and found it wholly changed from her first visit.

Of course, the walls themselves cannot be changing; rather I feel it is some ill effect of the air, which carries an odd odor the farther from daylight we descend, working its effects on our thoughts. Still, we have agreed that it is best we do continue to descend. As long as we stay together, our exploration will surely yield rich rewards - and our findings thus far are rich indeed.

Our return to civilization will surely be one of triumph and honor; we will bear with us dozens of the finest treasures and artifacts, and the promise of many more when a salvaging expedition can be arranged.

It should be noted that return may prove difficult, as some property of the local geography seems to be throwing our compasses into disarray, but with proper coordination, this nuisance will be easily overcome.

Day 1 Ends.
The nearby stream helps you to clean the blood off your clothes. A little. What it can't wash away is the paranoia.

You pass a tense morning trading speculations and theories, arguing about what you heard in the night and who was accounted for, but ultimately going in circles. A young team member by the name of Yeet takes a few minutes to wander out in the jungle for a piss and to clear their head.

By the time Yeet arrives back at the camp, the group has made up their minds. They greet Yeet with pistols and machetes drawn. The voice you hear isn't one you recognize, but the discovery of the guide's body has forced more changes upon the group than you would like. "We can handle this here, or you can take your chances in the jungle."

Yeet blinks, incredulous. "Are you kidding? Me, alone in the jungle? That's not a chance at all."

"It's a better chance than you gave our guide," somebody mumbles, and tosses a machete at Yeet's feet.

"Please." Yeet steps toward the group, but a pistol cocks, clear and cold in the noonday sun. Yeet freezes, then slowly picks up the machete and shuffles off into the trees.

Just before nightfall, you find Yeet's body in a ravine not far from the ruins. If they fell, jumped, or were pushed, you'll never know.

Upon pointing out some of the strange yellow flowers that grow sporadically around this site, Bennett Stallings recalled that one of the locals at the nearby village mentioned a concoction made up of the odd plant. It was rumored to protect against various maladies of the jungle, Bennett said, as well as providing a boost to energy and other hokum of the sort you always hear in backwards cultures such as these.

Nonetheless, mister Stallings harvested some of the crop and set about the task of preparing some of the brew so that he can ascertain for himself whether its effects have any grain of truth. The process for making it is arduous and time-consuming, and the flowers themselves are sparse, so he can brew only small batches at a time. But upon imbibing, Stallings reported a rush of energy and a strange, heady feeling of invulnerability.

We have cautioned him not to test that feeling, but are intrigued to let others of our group try the brew when he can make more, since he seems to show no ill effects. Quite the contrary, while most of us have slept in a manner most undisturbable since our arrival, Stallings, since sampling his strange concoction, seems to need sleep less than ever. He is convinced that his odd drink will somehow play a role in the success of our mission, and has vowed to have as many of us as possible try it. Well, at the rate of only one or two proper drinks per day, perhaps I will be lucky enough to avoid my turn.

Day 2 Dawns.
You come to your senses standing over the sleeping body of a promising young explorer named Catboi (so named for their ability to get out of scrapes and survive in situations where others might have ended up dead.

Why are you standing here? Why is everybody else still asleep? You feel a strange compulsion and reach for the sleeping body of your comrade, but snatch your hand away at the last moment. Something is wrong. Catboi’s face looks pale, drawn.

A scream startles you, and the next thing you know the entire party is here with you. Several of them look terrified, one or two hang quietly, nervously, by the entryways. “I had a nightmare,” somebody is saying – you don’t know who, you can’t take your eyes off the still-sleeping, still-wrong shape in the sleeping bag before you. “I was running through the jungle, I was covered in blood. I was chasing somebody.”

“It was just a dream,” you say, absently reaching once again for your comrade. You draw back the cover of the sleeping bag.

Catboi doesn’t wake. The body is cold. More horrifying, the body is sunken, folded in on itself, a hollow shell collapsing inward. The organs, the blood, have all been removed.

Eaten.


You don’t know where that word came from, but you know it’s true as it echoes in your head. With dread, you realize that Yeet was innocent, and worse, that whoever killed the guide -- and now, Catboi -- is still among you.

ok so for example if the game starts with

Player A inoculator
Player B inoculated

and A incolulates Player C...

Will the new roles be :

Player A Inoculated
Player B Inoculated
Player C Inoculator ?

As in if Player A/B die, they flip as Town Inoculated?
Inoculation does not alter a player's role or flip.

Day 2 Ends.
It happens so fast.

Once a few hands go up to vote for the one called monkey, too many hands to count go up.

"Wait a minute --" you cry, but there's no time. Monkey grabs the gun off your belt and shoots himself in the head.

There's so much blood. It goes everywhere, almost as if there were a bomb inside this person's head -- but you realize with horror this is no longer a person at all. Within the wreckage of the skull, you see maggots and worms and other unspeakable *skittering* things writhing. These, along with the blood and who knows what other fluids, have doused you and everybody else.

And within moments, everybody goes from shock to panic... and then a change comes over them. Their eyes shift, their bodies curl and contort. They whirl to look at you ... you, who were lucky enough to drink the strange brew Catboi and Umlaut had been laboring over.

And they attack.

You don't know why you're safe while everybody else has lost their minds, but you plunge together deeper into the ruins, the horde of your previous allies loud and slavering at your heels. But the change has made them clumsy, and you gain enough ground to find a room within the ruins with a heavy stone column that you together knock across the entryway.

You can see your former friends through the gaps left, but they cannot reach you, though they try, oh how they try, with eyes bloodshot and fingers straining for you, crazed with bloodlust.

You pause to take a breath.

It's only Umlaut and Ydrasse who have avoided the horrible transformation.

Umlaut squeaks out a little chuckle, not taking his eyes off the door. "Jesus, I thought that was it."

Ydrasse says nothing. Her eyes have gone bloodshot, her hands twisting into claws, as she reaches for him.

I just want to say how annoyed I am by the scum team's rapid annihilation of the game. I was ready to go DEEP with the flavor, my dudes.

Town just found themselves in a rough spot overnight without even knowing it. Scum was in autowin if even just a couple of people voted Monkey, (on d3 that would have become just one person) and they were ready for it (as the PT will show). Even if town played optimally (which would have been, probably, really really difficult), they wouldn't escape the guillotine over their necks until at least day 5. But that was, like, ridiculously remote.

HEM was neighborized night 1.

When HEM had 2 votes on, they coordinated a quick recruit of ydrasse and then a quick lim on monkey. The quick votes at day start opened the door for it.

Also @Prism, your situation and replacement has given me (and the duck I think) a little clarity on how I'll handle replacements in future games. It doesn't help for this game obviously, but I think this adjustment will help (which I'll add to my rulesets) to handle those situations better in the future.

So, in the last run of this setup, scum won by getting parity in the panic room, and then using their NK on the bomb. This run actually ended up playing out in similar fashion, even though I specifically removed the option for scum to self-kill.

Funny old thing, life.

Thoughts on the setup or the action resolution? This one ended so fast due to a rushed d1 neighborize. A random neighborize prob would have been better for town, but Umlaut beat it by a few minutes.

From the journals of sir Cal Holland.
As I write this, my hands tremble from the harrowing encounter we have just had.

As the sun set and we returned to base camp, one of our groups chanced to pass through one of the clearings just outside the far reaches of these ruins, under a dense canopy of trees. There, they chanced upon a lone, lanky figure hunched over the body of a vaguely humanoid creature. It may have been a monkey, but that is hardly the point. Upon drawing closer, they realized to their horror that the figure was that of our very own Jeffrey Elvington, the provisioner. This man, so renowned for his palate and his ability to make an, if not scrumptious, then at least palatable, meal out of almost anything we came across, was devouring the organs of this poor creature.

One of the party gave a start, upon which Elvington turned on the group and, in a fury, gave chase.

I simply do not know what I would have done, had I been among those attacked by Elvington in this way, so I cannot offer any sort of judgment for what came next. They fled toward our campsite with Elvington in crazed pursuit, howling and snarling at their backs. They reached the safety of our encampment, where several of our party (myself among them) were already making preparations for nightfall. Elvington charged into our midst, whereupon several of the men in the group fell upon him, restraining him and holding him to the ground. Any sane man would know he was beaten, but this man continued to claw and bite and hiss with a fury surpassed only by the wildest of cornered animals.

We tried to talk sense to him, but it was no use. Finally, Leonard Sangster, our armsman, pulled his pistol and shot Elvington in the head.

Of course, we were horrified, but Sangster merely pointed at the dead man – or what should have been a dead man. A strange smile curled Elvington’s lips, and he hissed in what seemed almost to be pleasure. Then, from the bullet wound in his forehead, came a horrific procession of worms, maggots, and tiny insects. Only when this troubling flood had ceased did Elvington stop moving and succumb to his untimely death.

We have surmised that Elvington became afflicted with some sort of parasite, but we know not how he came by it. We have since tried to piece together his doings so that we could narrow down the source of this infection, but owing to the confused state of our camp and our difficulties in mapping this site, it has proved quite impossible.

If he was, in fact, infected by something here at these ruins, there is no telling who among us might also be afflicted.

With this troubling thought in mind, I shall try to sleep, but I fear that may be difficult.
