These ancient runes hail from an age when deeds of bravery and magic stirred the roots of the World Tree and Gods and Heroes walked together, fought together, and wrested a good life from the coldest reaches of the North.

Coming soon to the Large Theme Queue!

Setup: Large Theme
# Players: 21
Moderator: fferyllt
Reviewer: borkjerfkin
Backup Moderator: borkjerfkin
Flavor: Game will be based on Steampunk Tarot. The game will feature some unique tarot-inspired mechanics, but no alignment changes.

The Steampunk Tarot deck by Barbara Moore and Aly Fell is based on the Ryder Waite deck, so you can use R-W meanings to select your card picks. If you have any questions (or if I know your card has unique or idiosyncratic meanings or symbolism in the Steampunk deck), we can discuss when you're ready to make your card picks.

Links to R-W meanings for

Major Arcana: http://www.tarot-card.net/majorarcana.htm
Court Cards: http://www.tarot-card.net/courtcards.htm
Minor Arcana: http://www.tarot-card.net/minorarcana.htm

The interpretations I'll use for the game are not entirely R-W standard, but more of an amalgam of R-W, Thoth and a few other sources.

Choose three cards, ranked in your preference order.

Pre-in's accepted (11 max), Hydrae welcome.

Original Tarot uPick micro game is here.

Come, dream a peaceful dream with us...

Image

Now announcing "A Mid-Scummer Night's Dream"

A large theme game for 17 players, designed and moderated by Morph the Cat (fferyllt and Cabd). This game features several unique mechanics and flavor that is almost surreal at times. Or was it at places? Or maybe at spaces? When did we even fall asleep, anyways?

Read on for more details...

Things this setup is:

Fair.
This setup is believed by us and our reviewers to give all players in the game a fair and nearly equal if not perfectly equal chance of winning. There are no situations that cause an immediate loss based upon a single day's or slot's play.
Lie-Free
At no point will the mods, role PMs, or any other info generated by anything other than players lie to you. We further certify that nothing about the information presented here will be misleading or deceptive in nature.
Complex
This setup is based upon a dreaming mechanic that will affect both players and game flow. Everything that is happening will be spelled out when it takes effect if not sooner.
Protected
This setup is protected against poor manner and play. We will be enforcing heavy WOTM; and hydrae that wish to join must be preexisting hydrae with a track record of good behavior. There is a mechanic in place in regards to deadlines that will reward game-oriented posting and punish "shitposting"

Things this setup is not:

Beginner-friendly
This setup is designed for players who have played theme games before. While it is still a game of mafia at its core; if you are still learning the ropes, we recommend you learn elsewhere.
Slow
The deadline mechanic means the game will be fast paced in posting, or in deadlines. Or both.
Bastard
While mechanics of the game may change some things players are used to, all of this will be communicated and alignments etc will never be modified.

Experience requirements:

For Hydrae:
Your hydra must have at least one completed theme game, and each head must also qualify through the individual requirements.
For Solo Players:
You must have completed three games on-site; at least two of which are themes, and at least of one of which is a mini theme or larger.

Pre-ins (11 of 11) - all taken!

The Deco Murders

A Newbie Friendly Micro Normal Game

Presented By: fferyllt
Backup Moderator: Cabd

Image

It was a time of frenetic optimism and plenty, though destined to end in the gritty, grey gloom of The Great Depression. Art Deco celebrated the Machine Age, and its aesthetics repudiated the organic flow of late 19th Century Art Nouveau. Though overdone and decadent as the time period that inspired it, the art survives in period architecture, sculpture, and graphics to this day.

What replaced Art Deco? What killed it? Some say Social Realism. Some say the Abstract movement. But, the predominant movement after Deco faded was Pop Art. And that is the struggle for artistic survival we see enacted here, in this game.

Game Name:
The Deco Murders
Game Type:
Closesd Normal
Game Size:
9

Bastard?:
No
Hydras Allowed?:
Not this time (Newbie Friendly game conforming to the Normal Game rules.)
Other Restrictions?:
WOTM. 5 Pre-ins are available, with priority given to players who have completed 3 or fewer games on-site.

Description:
This game is designated "Newbie Friendly". As such, all players are expected to play in a manner consistent with Newbie Game etiquette. Experienced players should model the kind of game behavior they feel represents the best of MafiaScum.Net. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Pre-ins

  1. acidphoenix
  2. Gorny
  3. innocentvillager
  4. Gödel
  5. Sunny Delight

Perpetual Mylo III

Designed and originally run by Max in 2010.
Run for the second time by WickedestJR in 2013
Back for a third and definitely not final time in 2017!

Setup:
  • Twelve player open theme
  • Five mafia goons vs. seven VTs
  • If the town successfully lynches a mafia goon on a particular day, then the mafia team kills a vanilla townie that night. However, if the town lynches incorrectly, then the mafia team has to sacrifice one of their own the following night.
  • Town wins if they lynch three mafia goons before they mislynch three times.
  • Mafia wins if they can coordinate a mislynch three times before three of their members are lynched.
  • Essentially it is a match for three out of five.

Max originally conceived of, designed, and ran this setup. The first game is here.

Wickedestjr ran the the second game, here. In 2013 the Perpetual Mylo II town won the Best Town Team Scummie (a Scummie award that is now defunct). It's a fun setup!

WOTM in effect.

Setup: Mini Theme
# Players: 13

Backup Moderator: Bell
Flavor: The game will be based on Deviant Moon Tarot. This linked page has an interesting essay by the deck's creator about the artwork and symbolism of this deck, if you're interested. It also contains links to images for every card in this deck, which can help you pick your cards. The game will feature some unique tarot-inspired mechanics, but no alignment changes.

The Deviant Moon deck by Patrick Valenza is loosely based on the Ryder Waite deck, so you can use R-W meanings to select your card picks. If you have any questions (or if I know your card has unique or idiosyncratic meanings or symbolism in the Deviant Moon deck), we can discuss when you're ready to make your card picks.

I've run three Tarot uPicks at MS in the past. If you'd like a feel for how a Tarot themed game might work, here's the most recent one: Micro 759: Tarot uPick III

Links to R-W meanings for

Major Arcana: http://www.tarot-card.net/majorarcana.htm
Court Cards: http://www.tarot-card.net/courtcards.htm
Minor Arcana: http://www.tarot-card.net/minorarcana.htm

The interpretations I'll use for the game design are not entirely R-W standard, but more of an amalgam of R-W, Thoth and a few other sources.

Choose three cards, ranked in your preference order.

The Tarot uPick Design Process
  • Assign Significator Card: This will be your first choice card unless someone else chose the card before you did. In that case, your Significator will be your second choice, unless that has also been chosen as a first choice. Then it's on to your third choice. If that is also taken it's time for 52-Pickup! All three cards taken has never happened, even in the Large Theme Tarot uPick, so hopefully it won't happen here.
  • Design the roles
    based on all three cards
    - This happens BEFORE the random alignment assignment. This means that any Significator card can be any alignment, and any Role based on the cards can be any alignment.
  • Roll the random alignments
  • Modify roles if needed for balance
Hydrae welcome!

Pre-in's filled! If you would like me to send you a PM when this game goes into sign-ups, please let me know!

Have you ever lamented that you didn't get the role/abilities you wanted in a Mafia game? Have you ever thought "What I wouldn't do for a dayvig just about now"? Have you ever gone down the ability modifier rabbit hole?

Yes? Then this game is for you!

Each player will get to choose up to 5
non-bastard
1-shot abilities. Players can also request modifications for those abilities. Normal modifications are ok, non-normal are also ok, but if they are waaaay out there I'll say "No".

I will craft roles based on your ability request, giving you 1 to 3 of them depending on game balance considerations. I may not be able to take specifically requested modifications, also depending on game balance considerations, but I will do my best to honor them while making the game design fun, challenging and balanced.

This game will almost certainly be swingy.
There will be no bastard abilities, no bastard mechanics, and no moderator lies.

WOTM is in effect. Please let me know if you're avoiding any players and I will keep that in mind both for initial sign-ups and if replacements are needed.
