Mafia is random enough without them. They also distract new players from focusing on "if player y is scum then..."-based deductions by pushing focus onto coin-flip based setup speculation. I think that most random roles are a shortcut game designers take that often doesn't yield the most elegant solution.
that said, I do think that random roles can be used elegantly, I like

I think F11 is better than C9, but I still don't like it -- it takes far to long to play out, especially without deadlines, and that only exasperates the replacements needed & boring game problems.- Xylthixlm

Well some difference there are obvious.
In meat world you can suspect someone on stuttering or facial expressions.
IRC is in real time forum isn't. You have more time to catch peoples mistakes in forum.
You have an element of surprise and speed that can allow you to catch people off guard in irc. When I joined this site, I was a software tester for mobile business applications and the song PokerFace was not yet written by Lady Gaga

1. stawman, wifom and people who think meta is the best reason for lynching or saving their butt.
I'm thanking lawrencelot for this one:
2. Getting lynched as scum for the wrong reasons.
3. Lurkers
4. Players that suck the fun out of mafia with long post that mean nothing.
5. Flaky mods. Sorry this one just really go to me.
6. Players that use what they know about a player to make them look like scum when they are scum. (long story)Sarcasm is just a way of saying how stupid you think someone is but in a more polite way.- Adel

You see, I HATE precisely this attitude. For one, if you send the signal that lurking is OK, it will cause others to lurk, and make it harder to find scum. Secondly, there are genuine incentives for scum to lurk, but basically none for town. So someone lurking is acting in a way that makes sense for scum not town. This sort of thing should always be a scumtell. Lynching for anti-townness forces scum to act protown, which directly harms their ability to accomplish the other part of their mission (get town lynched).Shanba wrote:
I refuse to play suboptimally in a game in order to possibly improve the quality of other games. That's not playing towards my win condition, and thereby cheapening the game.
Lurking is antitown, and if lurkers get lynched day one consistently, they have this nice tendency to learn their lesson. One of my things for this list is 'people who think that we just have to put up with lurking because lurkers aren't always scum.'
Also, I agree with glork.
If you lynch the players in order of antitownness, you end up with the most protown players at the end of the game. 'Most protown' is the same as 'least scummy.'- hasdgfas

meta can be very important. I'm sure you do a bit of meta'ing yourself, even if you don't realize it. If you're talking meta defense, I agree.SpyreX wrote:0.) Meta. Meta. Meta. Meta. BLAARG

1.vote: iamausername. This should never happen, ever.
2. "the random voting stage is over, so unvote." If you don't understand the purpose of random voting, why bother doing it?
3. People refusing to hammer before deadline, making days get pointlessly dragged out even though the lynch has essentially already been decided because "longer days are good for the town".
4. Inattentive mods. If you don't care if your game is running smoothly, your players are considerably less likely to care.

In response to this, I would like to assert that there are times when having a day continue is absolutely the best play, even if known scum has been outed. People who always want to take days to deadlines for the sake of just talking irritate me, too. I think the key word that you typed here is "iamusername wrote:3.
