According to the game rules, specifically common rule #8, we are not to speak vaguely so as to have a private conversation in public using previously known information from before the game.

Interesting I think that is a correct interpretation. Usually the payload the rule is designed for (I copied it from GE) is power roles so you cant do "remember the time I was rhyming a lot" and claim that you rolled commuter again or whatever.

But yeah the rule is against the -private channel- itself and even if you feel altguessing isn't part-of-the game you can't PM another townie "in the context of this game do you prefer coke or Pepsi" so

Was doomscrolling and saw this, I know what you mean and I guess it’s applicable in some sense to power roles but the main shenanigans I saw with “ovaltine decoder ring” ploys was meta-related.
