Expanding Confirmation Phase

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Feb 13, 2024 1:05 pm

Post by JacksonVirgo »

Yes yes, I'm bad at naming threads but TL;DR I am proposing we make it more common to confirm global game information alongside confirming your role. The information is global, everyone should know it so make sure everybody knows it.

I dislike dumb-tells (or possibly known as derp-slips but I dislike that term) with a burning passion. Dumb-tells are when you say something stupid that you should know or something that only scum definitely know but town might not etc such as whether a mafia PT is 24/7 or particular aspects like inherent multi-tasking etc. These tells are
usually
pretty insubstantial as arguments, but I still see them as a risk to game integrity and could completely destroy somebody's game in particular setups such as a wolf accidentally scum-claiming because they overlooked a simple thing that should have otherwise been known.

I feel that during the confirmation phase of a game, the global information of the game such as whether or not scum have day-chat etc should also be a part of that just as a precaution to keep game integrity as secure as possible throughout as many games as possible. These slips aren't natural, they make small annoyances at best and could break games unfairly at worst.

For most games this isn't a super important thing but it's for those edge-case games that this would really affect, and I don't think it's to much to ask for players as it's a one time event at the start of each game.

I have done something like this in my open game I am running right now but only with part of the rules.
I fully support this idea.

People will always find a way to dumbtell.

Speaking as a very dumb person here.

if you really dislike dumbtells though you can always ban discussion of them during a game, i think it's pretty easy to outline what one could be, and even if you can't make someone not think about those, it's very strong in kinda shutting down that talking point / forcing people towards more engaging play

That doesn't work as well as you'd think it does, most of the time when it goes wrong it really goes wrong and that's not something you can realistically enforce to not talk about when it's in the lens of it being a scummy thing as opposed to something to town-read people over. As it's the former that's the issue moreso than the latter.

If somebody claims an impossible role because of a rule they accidentally overlooked, you can't expect town to just ignore that because of a ban of talking against dumb-tells

Yeah but it doesn't hurt to minimise the impact

yeah that's fair, i kinda understood your thread more about alignement neutral dumbtells like dumb mod questions, saying obviously weird things, that kind of stuff

and i don't think you can prevent those town-confirming / scum-confirming tells with asking more info during confirmation anyways

I do this in my games that differ from the norm. Here's an example from Trust Fall, where my trust mechanic deviated from the norm.
Prism wrote:
Prism, you are a
Vanilla Townie
.

Abilities:
  • You have your voice and your trust vote. Use them wisely.
Basic Win Condition:
  • You win when the number of living Town players is less than or equal to the number of living Mafia players.

Spoiler: Important setup notes
  • A full description of the setup, including the rules of the setup and Vanilla Townie/Mafia Goon sample PMs, can be found here.
  • You cannot move or rescind your single trust vote when placed. However, you may accept the offer of another player at any time. Trust votes reset at the start of a new phase.
  • An elapsed day deadline results in a free choice by the Mafia to be resolved 36 hours later. If the Mafia fail to select a valid pairing, the game will be resolved as a town win.
  • If someone offers or accepts a valid trust, or creates the appearance of such, it will be resolved. If the action attempted is not valid, eg. the player has already offered a trust vote and attempts to offer a second, it will not be resolved, and no further action will be taken.
  • Mafia cannot form a valid pairing and exit the game together. If attempted, the pairing will publicly fail.

You have 36 hours to confirm by responding with your role name and the answers to the following three questions:

1. Can you offer more than one "initial" trust per gamephase?
2. Can you rescind a trust offer when extended?
3. If you have already offered a trust to Prism, can you accept an offered trust from Faker?

The game will start when all players confirm, and you can find the gamethread here.

WHy would u punish urself more as a mod to give out pop quizes like this and then u have to check answers. A simple confirm is easy enough

cause i like it when players enjoy my game and it's hard to enjoy a game where someone fucks up because they didn't know and didn't care

Next time I mod a game, I will require players to fill in and submit a Google Form with 15 questions.

Next time I mod a game, I will be actively vague about setup information and actively try to make the game inaccessible to even the most astute players. We could call it "Jake you Bastard," where I """mod""" a """mafia""" game.

unusual setup info should be something you learn about and read in signups ideally
time will end
