Please provide "context" for why you thought "T" was an element and this class then.

Ok then provide context for why you are nearing the end of an "Advanced Chemistry" course and still do not know basic polyatomic ions and that T is not an element.

our school system is screwy
this is the end of the first semester

chemistry hint: the more time you spend exchanging words with ShadowLurker, the less you will learn.

anyway, fuck rote memorization, just do enough reaction stoichiometry problems to have a working knowledge.
Rote learning is a learning technique which avoids understanding of a subject and instead focuses on memorization. The major practice involved in rote learning is learning by repetition. The idea is that one will be able to quickly recall the meaning of the material the more one repeats it.
Rote learning is widely used in the mastery of foundational knowledge. Examples include, phonics in reading, the periodic table in chemistry, multiplication tables in mathematics, anatomy in medicine, cases or statutes in law, basic formulas in any science, etc. Rote learning, by definition, eschews comprehension, however, and consequently, it is an ineffective tool in mastering any complex subject at an advanced level. However, rote learning is still useful in passing exams. If exam papers are not well designed, it is possible for someone with good memorization techniques to pass the test without any meaningful comprehension of the subject. However, learning the context of a particular topic can make the subject more memorable.

rote learning is necessary and useful in many cases. for example take geography, how can you even begin to understand history if you don't have a knowledge of geography? if someone says the montgomery bus boycott, and you dont know where montgomery is, youll miss significance in that it was in the south and also have to waste time to find out where montgomery is, hindernig you from reaching deeper topics.

That's still pretty disconcerting...

There are better ways to learn geography then rote learning.

Much more effective is to try and link the fact you are trying to remember to something you already know, to work with it, to use it in different ways, so you connect it with things you already know. In the example you give, you're not talking about rote learning, about someone who can recite off a list of states and capitals but dosn't know anything about any of them; you're talking about real learning, which is all about taking new facts and connecting them to other things you already know; like, in your example, you are able to do that because you have connections between Montgomery, Alabama; between your knowlege of the South in general, both present and historical; and your specific knowlege of the Montgomery bus boycott.
I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie

Actually, you're wrong.

When you're trying to troll somebody on an intellectual level, the very last thing you want is to have some silly mistake (such as a typo) undermine your credibility in the fickle and often harsh eyes of the Internet crowd.

1. this was not trolling
2. ITT people fail to see the purpose of the typo

actually that's waay different, IMO. i'm just learning full on chemistry this year as opposed to have been learning math since like pre-school
Yosarian2 wrote:There are better ways to learn geography then rote learning.
yeah this is the only test that we've been given so far that is just rote memorization and it's only really to give our grades a small boost for some easy points.
