Be Basic

The nitty and the griddy.

I will provide you with a list of 7 categories. You will then come up with a song for each category and submit them all to me at once in list form. Because guessing the submitter is part of the fun, it is strongly preferred that you submit your songs in the form of youtube links.

You can (and should!) use this link to check that the youtube links you're submitting are not blocked geographically.

I will randomize the songs such that I do not know who submitted what. On odd categories I will give a small penalty if I correctly guess the submitter. On even categories I will give a small bonus instead. Details on the scoring system will be discussed later.

KittyCategories

These are the categories you will submit to. I will be somewhat generous about category fit, especially in places where it is subjective (and it almost always is) Similar to bianco if I can make a plausible argument for why your song fits the category I won't penalize it too hard.

Spoiler: category 1: Songs that Remind You of Driving Around With Your Friends at 1am

In this category I want you to submit a song that takes you back to a very particular time and place and gives you the feeling that you are in a car with some friends late and night and listening to music and generally just doing nonsense.

I will be ESPECIALLY lenient in the catfit on this category because it is extremely individual.

Spoiler: category 2: Perspective shift

Songs that come at something from an unexpected angle OR songs that have within their lyrics or music a clear shift of perspective.

Spoiler: category 3: Villainous, baby!

Songs that feel like they're a song for or from the perspective of a villain (but haven't been used as one by a movie/musical).

Spoiler: category 4: Lullaby

Songs that make you want to go to sleep. Please do not submit an actual lullaby for this please if I have to listen to some emo cover of hush little baby or something i stg.

Songs that are confusing. Please feel free to interpret this as broadly as possible.

I think MS doesn't like hip hop enough and I like hip hop so I'm going to make you submit it! I will be considering all aspects of the song here but will have a special emphasis on the lyrics.

Spoiler: Category 7: Songs that would play during a movie when the female lead shaves her head and starts a bar fight

Pretty simple premise here.

Similar to how this has been done before I will be breaking down songs into enjoyment (for me personally, subjectively) and category fit.

I will be dropping the lowest score for the purposes of final scores.

Components of a score

I'm just gunna steal the scoring system whole cloth because I am lazy, but I'm going to bump the total numbers of the scale up a bit for more granularity.

enjoyment:

0-10
measures how much i liked it. Simple score out of 10.

catfit:

0-4
measures how well the song fits the category. this is also quite subjective and i expect that we will disagree on the score.

unfamiliarity:

0-2
measures how familiar i am with the song, with more points the less familiar i am.

misc:

0-?
additional medals (see below) there is also a 0.3 point penalty if i successfully guessed the submitter on odd categories and a 0.3 bonus if I successfully guess the submitter on even categories.

I liked this medal so I am stealing it from fireisredsir whole cloth. A song or artist I've never really experienced but that fact is somewhat perplexing and sad. +.4

So wait, what music do I listen to anyway? What can you submit that I might like?

Well the good news is I have really broad but shallow taste in music. I like stuff from all over the musical spectrum, but I don't go out of my way to find new stuff a lot. That means it should be pretty easy for you to find stuff that you like that I'm not super familiar with!

I will say I tend to prefer lyrics over instrumental pieces. I tend to enjoy songs that tell a story. I'm not a big fan of just noise or dissonance. Here are my submissions for the previous walrus for reference:

Cartoon Heroes was the one we'd all sing along to. It's just... freedom, in a song. It's silly and the meaning of the song doesn't even MATCH but... it's There.

The opening to Bastille's newest album, an album about ancient known stories and the hidden lost perspective behind them, and no song encapsulates this more than this one. Really give the lyrics a read while listening, and I hope you enjoy and agree. This song really hits me somewhere weird.

I sing this song all the time when I wanna feel like a Heel. This shit reads like a huckster preacher leading others to their digital demise, to shed their flesh and embrace something horrifying. Or at least, I sing it that way. It's sick.

May I introduce you to some Loreena McKinnit, canadian legend? I'd have put Mummer's Dance here but it's too upbeat. This song is just.... it hits a lot of marks of my culture and such but also, I sleep with it sometimes, to soothe my anxieties.

A song in an accent you won't get that speeds up each verse to tell the story of a man and a woman getting married against their will but also sort of wanting it and how annoying the wedding and the family are... and about bees and such? It's... it's confusing and wonderful.
