I’ll submit Flow’s biggest competition for best animated film - The Wild Robot. I saw it last year, cried a lot, and still think about it often. It is a beautifully told story that everyone should see.

submitting
Princess Mononoke
and
Spirited Away
, my two favourite films from Studio Ghibli. Princess Mononoke is a story about environmentalism, romance, and coming-of-age, in which a young prince undergoes a journey to discover where a corrupted spirit that attacked his village came from. Spirited Away is a coming-of-age film with gorgeous visuals, and it's about facing one's fears and being kind to others.

I'll also submit
Perfect Blue
in case anyone is in the mood for something a bit more fucked up, a fairly twisted psychological horror/thriller film about a young woman who starts getting stalked while trying to transition from pop star to actress, and the events that unfold make her start to question her sanity

I watched Perfect Blue in undergrad only knowing it was a good Satoshi Kon film, it sure was a trip.

I watched perfect blue while high the first time, one of the absolute least recommendable things I can think of, -1000/10

great film though

Also with so many movies might do more than one night, depends entirely on scheduling though so this is NOT a promise.

Thanks to everyone for coming out.

The next category is...

Movies with a Focus on Fight Scenes
: Virtually any Martial Arts movie will fit into here, but the door is open to any movie that puts a lot into it's fight choreography (i.e the John Wick Films).

Will submit more but my first choice is..

Legend of the Drunken Master
(2000), also known as Drunken Master II this was one of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong action films and really any of those would be a good submission. You don't need to know anything about the first one for it to make sense, and it's great at balancing enjoyable action with comedy in each and every scene.

I'd like to submit:

Hero
(2002) - beautifully choreographed chinese martial arts movie with super cool fight scenes where people are flying elegantly while trying to kill each other, a convoluted plot where the same story is retold three times, and a lesson in Chinese history.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
- I've not watched this, but I've heard it is a critically acclaimed movie. Plus it apparently has multiple strong female characters.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is fantastic. Agreed about Scott Pilgrim.

I have several thoughts about this, have to narrow down my options.

great film, arguably chan's best imo - a lot of them have issues where the movie drags between the big action setpieces but this moves at a good pace and nails the comedy bits in between

i have two suggestions (i love action movies though i could probably go forever)

Wheels on Meals
(1984) - starring sammo hung, jackie chan, and yuen biao, there's a story here about them running a food van in europe but it doesn't matter, this is all about 3 great martial arts performers at the peak of their game, and the climactic fight with jackie chan and benny urquidez is an all-timer.

One-Armed Boxer
(1972) - dipping back into the 1970s, this is a classic tale of loss and revenge, starring Jimmy Wang Yu, the original martial arts star (predating Bruce Lee). it is as it says in the title, a guy loses his arm, so he learns to fight one-handed. there are countless classic wuxia films and this is a very good one, an interesting representative of what the genre was like in its earlier days.

Going to submit a couple of cult classics of B-cinema. Both with a level of acting that would be worthy of the Room, but we like it that way.

Ricky-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)
— Ricky gets sent to privatized prison that runs itself outside of government interference and where brutal violence abounds; but see, Ricky is trained in a martial school that basically gives him super-strength. Follows one-and-a-half hours of gorefest with ridiculous over-the-top fight scenes and Mortal-Combat-esque fatalities.
(CW: while the gore is extremely fake-looking, there is a lot of it, and some scenes may still be a bit disturbing.)

Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter (2001)
— Title says it all, there's Jesus, lesbian vampires, a talking ice cream, the usual. Oh, there's also a masked wrestler in this movie.
The fighting is as amateurish (read "bad") as the rest, but it adds to the charm.

Hmmm I think I'll also submit

The Mask of Zorro (1998)
where Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta Jones and Anthony Hopkins give their all in an amazing swashbuckling films with great swordwork.

So, my first nom I do not really expect to be something watched for various reasons but it may have some of the most beautifully precise and planned fight scenes and just general movement throughout, just high on the visually violent side:
Monkeyman(2024)
.

The Old Guard
- What I liked about the fight choreography in this movie is how clear these people have been doing what they do for a long time with each other it's almost without thought, some of it is beautifully done. Charlize Theron is wonderful in this also.

Kung Fu Hustle
- It's a classic for a reason. Well worth seeing.

Vash stole a movie I was going to nom >:(

Edit- i had a movie here before that on second thought no, perhaps not.

Just a note for this, we will be doing the
subbed
