March 26- "Mark it Read, It's in a Thread" Day

An often overlooked aspect of the site is, as a companion to us being the best place to PLAY Mafia on the internet, we are also THE biggest and best collection of completed Mafia games on the internet. We have 22 years of gaming history in our archives and they are all yours to read at the click of a mouse.

So today, I invite you all to find a completed game in our archives and read through it. There is no wrong way to pick! Choose one you've seen mentioned before as a particularly good example of some aspect of Mafia, or a past Scummies winner or nominee, or one of the handful of "Special Event" games we've run, or one by your favorite Mod or involving your favorite player, or even just choose one at random! You could even review an old game of your own to see how you've improved!

After all, one of the best ways to improve your play is to read completed games - you can see how other players approach a situation, what works, what doesn't, what tells various players might give off, and so on! And, hell, it can be just plain entertaining too!

I just read the first ever mini theme and wow. 6 town, 3 mafia, 3 third parties. Makes me want to run a silly theme setup.

Fun fact, reading games on the legacy site when it was still up but had everything locked was actually how I improved my play!

...and for those who have no idea wtf this means, there was a time when the site migrated over in full. Maybe was the upgrade from 1 to 2? (We have since gone to 3.) I don’t remember why the site had to migrate, but it happened some time around 2008 - 2010 IIRC.

The site continued to run on the new site, in full, with everything imported, but for the better part of a year or so, the old site with a snapshot of all ongoing games at the time of the move (the third Stars Aligned was ongoing to give a better timeframe) as well as all past games, was still accessible, in read-only mode.

And it had a separate URL from the main site.

Since my parents had blocked mafiascum at the time, I couldn’t directly access the site at the time--but I could access the legacy site, so I poured hours into reading games.

(The legacy site also had a legacy wiki, which could actually be edited! I think I edited the legacy wiki at some point, but all of the legacy content there was lost.)

March 27 - "It's Not Easy Being Green" Day

Like playing Mafia here? Thank your local List Moderators T-Bone, Something_Smart, SirCakez, Skygazer, Ausuka, and Save The Dragons. From keeping games filling smoothly to examining new setups and dealing with rule infractions, the List Mods (present and past) do a lot to make this site what it is. You might want to just drop them a word of thanks... though probably not in their Queue thread, those get spammy enough as it is.

March 28 - "Happy 23rd Birthday, Mafiascum!" Day

As someone who has been here for approaching 22 years, I can tell you this site is a special corner of the internet. Whether you have been here since the beginning or you just joined today, thank you for being a part of this site! 23 years of an empty site is worthless, so it is the users who deserve to be heralded today. So celebrate yourself, because just by being here you make the site better!

Regrettably, I have not yet found a way to have time dynamically alter such that the day the site was founded always matches up with the number of years it has existed.

That's a relic of the site having been ported...twice. (Or three times?)

The site was founded on the 1.0 version of the forum software.

phpBB 1.0 worked in a way that the port to 1.5 didn't quite work perfectly and the port to phpBB 2.0 also didn't work perfectly and the port to phpBB 3.0 also also didn't work perfectly.

The coding team did the best they could to make retroactive content work on the newer versions, but the simple fact is a lot of the code pre-phpBB 3.0 is going to be janky and not display the way it did at the time.

So, 43,538 total.

Which would put me in approximately the top ten site posters of all time, if I had kept to one account.

Granted, since there's eras of the site history where posts were completely lost, and everyone past a certain point has had at least one alt account, it's hard to say for sure if I'm actually top ten or not, but I'm probably close.

March 29 - "Just A Normal, Ordinary" Day

Today is the day we celebrate the always standardized, rarely boring format of Mafia known as "Normal Games". What have been your favorite Normal games to play over the years? What is the wildest combination of modifiers you've seen? What are some prompts I could have written as a third thing if we had Normal Games back when I was actively playing and I knew what I was talking about?

And if you like Normal Games so much and think you have a good grasp on what makes them tick, you ought to consider applying to join the Normal Review Group!

The most I've seen crammed into 1 I think was 1-shot Loyal Weak Loud Announcing, but there's a bunch of combos.

March 30 - "A Banner Year for Banners" Day

This past year, we debuted a new cosmetic feature on the site, which we intended to be limited run but which were so popular we had to keep them around: Pride Banners! They joined the banners for Scummies, Mashies, Team Mafia and were themselves joined by the Design Challenge banner this past Fall.

Are there any banners on your wish list to win at the Scummies one day? Any banners you particularly like the look of?

March 31 - "An Offer You Can't Refuse" Day

International Mafia Month is winding down, but the game goes on. And so does this website! Running a website this size isn't free and mith has been gracious enough as to fund the website from his own pocket for the past 23 years. If you would like to contribute to the server costs of the site, you can do so either on the Donation Page or by subscribing to the Patreon; Donating is of course by no means required, this website is free to use and always will be, but if you weren't aware of the option before, now you are.

We've also (slowly but surely) working toward offering t-shirts and playing cards again to our users, as an additional way to support the site and server costs while at the same time getting you something cool and unique to Mafiascum in return.
