Thanks to everyone who showed up for Kung Fu Hustle!

Our Next Category is....

Music and Musicals
: Movies about music or that feature it as a prominent part of the plots. Any movie musicals obviously count, but also music biopics (and parody music biopics) or movies about musicians, etc.. are welcome here.

Might swap around but my first nomination will be
Tick, Tick, Boom!
the autobiographical musical about Jonathan Larson, the writer of RENT that made me actually appreciate the musical and is currently in my top 3 for "continuous time spent sobbing".

Additionally, when voting I'm going to let everyone "super like" up to two movies, which will count as 2 votes for that movie instead of one. This is completely optional and I will update the OP with this rule.

Nomination 1: Jesus Christ Superstar 2012 Live Arena Tour version
Tim Minchin, Ben Forster, and Mel C star in this modern-day presentation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera. I've seen a lot of versions of JCS as it's one of my absolute favorite musicals of all time and this is by far the best version imho

Nomination 2: 2gether
This movie parodying the creation of a boy band was aired on MTV in 2000. In fact, I had it taped on VHS (with part of an episode of Daria at the end of the tape) that I watched allll the time growing up. Not sure how it holds up honestly, but it's very fun. Featuring songs such as: "U + Me = Us (Calculus)" and "Say It (Don't Spray It)"

Let's Add
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
. A lot of people know This Is Spinal Tap, Walk Hard or Weird: The Al Yankovic story, (which are all worth a nomination) in the "parody music career" genre, but this one was just as good and is mentioned a lot less. Andy Samberg from the Lonely Island does a great job of playing connor4real and the humour just works for me (and most of the songs are pretty catchy too).

I want to nominate two recent movie musical adaptations that I thought did some really cool and inventive things.

In the Heights
- This one is very good, lots of fun cultural elements. This is one of Lin Manuel Miranda’s earlier works. The plot follows a Dominican-American neighborhood in Washington Heights over the course of the 3 hottest days of the summer. Fantastic music, bright colors, great choreography, but also an emotional story with relatable themes.

Mean Girls
- This adaptation works so so well. It feels very separate from the original film, so while I don’t like the original much, I really enjoy this adaptation and I’ve seen it a couple of times already. I’ve seen the stage version of the musical too, and I’d argue it works even better for film than it does for the stage. I would still recommend this even if you, like me, aren’t a huge fan of the original film.

Singin' in the Rain
- There are certain songs from this classic that I sing almost daily. It's just solidly good.

Weird: the Al Yankovic Story
- This movie has some truly excellent performances, everyone read the assignment and handed in their best work for a movie that premiered on The Roku Channel of all fucking places which is additionally hilarious.

Legally Blonde: The Musical
- This aired on MTV while it was still on Broadway and is another really good movie to musical adaptation.
Xalxe: this is xofelf sometimes we call each other names and other times we share emotions
MattyP: Ur an enigma tho when it comes to circadian rhythm and the traditions we hold dear when it comes to the sun and the moon

Great suggestions so far! I was originally going to suggest
RENT
, but I’ll happily consider
Tick Tick Boom
instead. It looks phenomenal, and as some of you may know, I thoroughly enjoy sobbing my eyes out.

I’m putting out there:

Mr. Holland’s Opus
. This movie stuck with me since I was a kid. It’s got passion for music, a reluctant but motivational teacher, the struggles and joys of building a family, and of course, some beautiful heartache.

Rigoletto
is an all-time childhood favorite of mine. It’s
Beauty and the Beast
meets the opera with a singing competition and friendship/found family dynamics that make me want to cry just thinking about them.

Matilda the Musical
. OMG talk about sobbing my eyes out. Tim Minchin’s lyrics are INCREDIBLE. He took a whimsical, fun film about a kid fighting back against injustice and her abusers, and he said, “Hey, let’s actually process the fact that she’s being abused, and that she’s just a kid.” Matilda & Ms. Honey were two very big, beloved, iconic roles to fill, and the actresses absolutely crushed it and made them their own.

And lastly…

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium
. It’s magical, it’s funny, it’s joyful, it has a compositional arc that gives me chills, and the mentor-student relationship between Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman tugs at your heartstrings in all the right ways. Jason Bateman and the adorable Zach Mills are also delightful additions to the cast.

Note: Due to the 3 submissions rule, removing Mr. Holland's Opus (after consulting from emyrs)

I am also going to submit
Sing Street
a coming of age-romance about a group of Dublin teenagers who try to start a band in the 1980s.

Apologies, completely spaced on this. We will be watching
Tick, Tick, Boom
on
Monday, April 14th at 9 PM ET
. I will however point out that Legally Blonde: The Musical got a very close second so if anyone wants to organize a watch of that, you are welcome to.

Thanks to everyone who showed up for Tick Tick...Boom! !

Our Next Category is....

Science Fiction: Look if google, letterboxd, imdb, etc.. says it's sci-fi, who am I to argue. Obviously a broad genre that can be combined with others, so go wild.

Going to go with a modern classic in
Arrival
which is about a linguist trying to decipher the language of Aliens who have come to Earth.
